ABUJA—Ahead of the December 10, 11 National Convention of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the party yesterday screened President Goodluck Jonathan. Also screened yesterday was the son of Nigeria’s late Prime Minister, Dr. Abdul Jelil Tafawa Balewa. President Jonathan, who arrived the Wadata Plaza, National Secretariat of the party, went to the National Working Committee, NWC, hall at 3.15p.m., where he was screened for one hour and came down at 4.15p.m. Soon after he left, Dr. Balewa came for similar screening. Though wife of late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, Akasoba Duke-Abiola paid for the form, she was said not to have collected it and did not appear before the screening Panel. Meanwhile, after Dr. Balewa had spent 90 minutes with the screening committee, he came out and declared: “I have decided to withdraw my aspiration for the strength and well being of the party. “I hope to see you all some other time. I am a strong PDP member.” Balewa, who arrived the secretariat at about 4:32p.m., spent about two hours waiting at the reception before he was ushered into the screening hall. Chairman of the screening committee and former National Chairman of PDP, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, who had earlier announced Balewa’s decision to withdraw from the race, hailed the aspirant’s decision. Ali said: “After going through 90 minutes that the screening exercise lasted, he came to the conclusion that he wanted to withdraw from the race. “He has promised to do everything to ensure the success of the party at the poll. We commend him for the decision, although he chose to go through the entire process of screening before deciding to withdraw.” PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, told newsmen that the leadership of the party would get the result of the exercise in the next 24 hours. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/2015-pdp-screens-jonathan-tafawa-balewa/ |
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obsasanjo has said that the deadly Boko Haram terrorism was growing beyond control because of the wrong reading and imputation by President Goodluck Jonathan that the sect was set out to frustrate his political ambition. Obasanjo who spoke in Abuja on Wednesday insisted that it was application of stick and carrot from government that can put an end to the terror activities. The former President spoke at the public presentation of two books by former president of Court of Appeal, Justice Mustapha Akanbi, held at Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. “Let me start with the issue of security. Boko Haram is not simply a menace based on religion or one directed to frustrate anybody’s political ambition. “It is essentially a socio-economic problem that is tainted with religion. It is a gargantuan danger to the nation and to all Nigerians”. “Initially, President Jonathan understanding of Boko Haram phenomenon suffered from wrong reading and wrong imputation. That is what led us to where we are today”. “It took even the President more than three years to appreciate and understand that it is a terrible mix of poor education or lack of education, misinterpretation of what Islam and the Quran teach and stand for, poverty, unemployment, injustice, drug, gun trafficking, human trafficking, fallout from Libya, revenge, frustration, struggle against inequality, imitation of international terrorism leading to training and part absorption by international terrorist group or groups and general poor governance including corruption,” he stated. He also said: “I have always maintained that solution to Boko Haram or any organisation like it lies in application of stick and carrot. “We must remember that there is nexus between security and development. Those who say that Boko Haram is a menace waiting to happen are evidently correct. “Some people have blamed the governments of the zone at the State and Local Government levels for the unacceptable socio-economic situation in the North-East. Of course, they must accept part of the responsibility. “But, I would rather say it is a collective responsibility and, collectively, the situation must be addressed and redressed. “The beginning of redressing the situation is education. I appreciated the importance of education in human development, state and nation-building, national development, employment generation, wealth creation, national unity, security and stability.” http://dailyindependentnig.com/2014/11/jonathan-failing-boko-haram-battle-obasanjo/ |

THE Nigeria 2014/15 league season may likely kick off in March to allow the majority of clubs in the top flight access cash from their state governments. Top officials informed that now that the NFF congress has endorsed the new governing structure of the League Management Company (LMC), the league is now on a better footing and what is now left is to decide on a kick-off date for the new season. “We could all say we want to start the league next week, but when the majority of the clubs are owned by state governments, it is only reasonable we allow them access their funding from their states before they start the season,” an official disclosed. “As a result, the new season will begin either in February or March when these clubs would have received some cash from their various governments.” This month, Kano Pillars won a third straight league title, while Shooting Stars, Gabros FC, Wikki Tourists and Ranchers Bees will replace relegated Gombe United, Kaduna United, Crown FC and Nembe City in the top flight. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/201415-npfl-season-start-early/ |

What will it the impeachment of Mr President? Political unrest, Economic instability, And a lot more havoc, why can't they wait till election period and synergies efforts to vote him out instead of impeachment. |
SAN is on point. But, this man is very intelligent. |
To call a spade a spade, what does it take the govt to fulfil the demands of this workers? Should we assume this is a plan to reduce the population of the nation? I mean, it's really alarming that the govt can't satisfy the health workers, and the other public/civil servant, if the wife of the governor and wife of the speaker of house of assembly can be on govt payroll, then the public and civil servant deserves better treatment. |
With all this happenings, I strongly hope and pray that the CIA prediction the Nigeria will split by 2015 won't come to reality. I have grown to a level where nothing surprise me anymore. |
JUST a couple of months after the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, arm of the public sector health workers ended its protracted strike, the National Union of Allied Health Professionals, NUAHP, and the Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU, again, withdrew their services. You have a right to wonder how often they are at work in a year. The fresh strike followed even after the Federal Government approved their demand to be allowed to become consultants, just as their peers, the medical doctors. Felix Faniran, President of NUAHP, said other demands including salary increment and upward adjustment of retiring age for his members were not addressed. Patients in public hospitals are left to feel the pinch of the incessant downing of tools by a sector that has become notorious for abusing strikes as if it is at war with members of the public, especially the poor who patronise government hospitals. The latest strike is coming in the last months of the year, when increase in travels exert high demand for emergency medical services. It also coincides with the intensification of the war against insur-gency in the North East, where our gallant soldiers and thousands of internally displaced persons require urgent medical and emergency attention. It is very unfortunate that health workers, in the unbridled peer rivalry between medical doctors and other professionals in the industry, have abandoned their social responsibility and the core ethics of their professional calling, which place primary emphasis on saving lives and giving succour to the afflicted. When the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD, challenged the nation, its defeat which received universal acclaim, was without any input from the public sector medical doctors because they were also on strike in their perennial struggling to assert their superiority over health workers who were not doctors. The government does not help matters much. Issues that appear pretty straightforward are allowed to fester for years. What does it take for government to implement the salary increase which is already being paid to doctors? Why delay it as if baiting non-doctors strike first? What accounts for the delay in implementing the 33-year-old White Paper which recommen-ded that the condition of service in the universities should also apply to the uni-versity teaching hospitals? The raise in the retirement age from 65 to 70 years, one of the demands of NUAHP and JOHESU, was made only for doc-tors.We again call on governments and all the arms of the health workers union to adopt the best practices in defining relations among peers, such that they would promote stability in the industry. We call for an end to these painful, recurring strikes that deal devastating blows on ordinary Nigerians. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/health-workers-strike/ |
By Dapo Akinrefon LAGOS — ALL Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, General Muhammadu Buhari has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being determined to push Nigeria into anarchy in the shortest possible time. Reacting to the recent invasion of the APC Data Centre in Lagos by security operatives, Buhari alleged that the Jonathan presidency had “mastered the art of how to push a nation into chaos within the shortest time possible.” Also, the APC leadership likened last week’s police invasion of the National Assembly to a coup. The party, however, called for an independent inquiry to determine who ordered the invasion and for what purpose “with a view to preventing a recurrence and also meting out the necessary punishment to those behind it.” In a statement made available to Vanguard, Buhari, who decried the invasion of the party’s data centre said “the desperation of the PDP grows by the hour.” Condemning the abuse of power, he said there was an attempt by the Jonathan administration to level the opposition. The former Head of State said “almost everyday, the Jonathan presidency seems intent on demonstrating for all to see that they have mastered the art of how to push a nation into chaos within the shortest time possible. “The early morning attack by security operatives on the APC data centre in Lagos on Saturday, November 22 is one such display in a growing chain of abuse and violation of the constitution and political rights of the people. It is a reckless act that must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.” Faulting the invasion, he said the Jonathan government could not claim ignorance, adding: “The security operatives conducting this illegal raid must have been ordered from Abuja. They would not have done what they did unless given the mandate from their high bosses in Abuja. “Attempting to defend the indefensible, they fabricate a story that the attack was necessary because criminal activity was taking place at the centre. These statements are such plain lies.” Besides, the presidential hopeful expressed worry that “these acts are but a foretaste of things to come. From these attacks, this government is signalling to the Nigerian people they have no intention of holding anything resembling free and fair elections. Their goal is not to create a level electoral playing field. Their goal is to level the opposition into the dust through the abuse of federal power.” Police invasion of NASS a coup —APC In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said using weapons to attack an arm of government and preventing it from carrying out its functions are tantamount to a coup, adding that the tear gas that was fired into the National Assembly by an invading force of policemen is a chemical weapon. It said: “We are demanding the independent inquiry in view of the seriousness of the armed attack on the National Assembly and the danger it poses to our democracy. We are also alerting the international community to the happenings in Nigeria and urging them to show interest because of their investment in the country’s democracy.” The party said denial by the Presidency of its involvement in the “senseless attack” is not enough to stop the finger-pointing at it (Presidency), “especially because no one, not even the Inspector General of Police, will have the temerity to stop the nation’s number four citizen from entering the National Assembly without an express order from the President.” According to the party, “this is why we have continuously held the President responsible for last week’s show of shame,” noting that the IG is just a tool in the hands of a President that has perhaps done more than any other President before him to truncate the nation’s democracy.” www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/invasion-apc-data-officejonathan-bent-pushing-nigeria-towards-anarchy-buhari/ |
By Rosemary Onuoha Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has said that individuals have a responsibility to manage risks for the betterment of their lives. Fashola said that people should have the awareness of the existence of risk as a natural phenomenon to human existence. He said, “We are often impervious to the risks we face on a daily basis. Risk here is the probability or the threat of damage, loss, injury or any other negative occurrence that is caused by external or internal vulnerabilities, the consequences of which may be avoided through preemptive action. “In other words, it can simply be described as the probability of losing something of value for example physical health, property or social status. Risk management refers to the steps we take to mitigate or eradicate the risk.” Fashola said that as a government, they are responsible for the wellbeing and welfare of the people they serve, stating, “We have a responsibility to provide social security for both the young and the elderly; a responsibility to provide security of lives and property and also a responsibility to ensure that the infrastructures put in place are properly maintained in a way and manner that the State can be described as having a developed economy status. According to him, where they fail to take pre-emptive steps to attend to the risks that come with the responsibilities that have been placed on them, they would be perceived as a failed Government. Fashola said that the youths and the elderly are exposed to social protection risks which if not addressed could result in poverty, and a resultant security hazard in the community, adding that risks of danger to lives and property of the citizens exist where, due to fraudulent practices on the part of those involved in construction, substandard materials are used in construction. According to him, the business of insurance is to ensure that full or partial financial compensation is made for loss or damage caused by events beyond the control of the insured. www.vanguardngr.com/2014/11/duty-manage-risks-fashola/ |
