Says one of the problems of Nigeria |
IbeOkehie:I will always get surprised why you made a conclusion on the examples you cited here. National statistics does not work that way. Yes you cited examples that are personal to you, which cannot be verified - that cannot be used as a yardstick in this discourse. You said you started sending money home after 2 months of landing in the US, virtually everyone that travels abroad do this. That is not a measure that you are okay. Most folks from Nigeria do that in order to send a message that they have "arrived" while slaving away. How many of them can even embark on major projects in Nigeria?. Do not get me wrong, I am not arguing that people are not doing well abroad but we should stop the generalisation and over exaggeration. To each one his own. Individual's circumstances differ, and so it will be wrong to be egging people's on based on a personal experience alone. And why comparing US to Nigeria. They are not in the same pedestal. US is a developed country, Nigeria is a developing country. Opportunities are more in the US but not in the way people exaggerate it here. And those opportunities are limited to some set of people. And more so, you never clarified what you earlier stated that Nigeria is a SOCIALIST country, which explains why Nigeria is a poor country, according to you. |
Fiscus105:Re-read what I typed. You have completely upended the discourse. And let me add, why you guys keep generalising sounds funny to me. "No senior software developer would have problems in developed nations globally" , you say. Your position was NOT true. There are lot of software developers without jobs. Some Software Developers have even abandoned the career for another lowly paid job. Software Development is a serious engineering job. You want to compare someone building "calculator" apps with someone who is building an enterprise app. The skillsets required for the two are vastly different and the westerners will test you to your limit during the interview. Why are a lot of people falling into "error of generalisation" on nairaland ? |
Stevenbright:It's very true. Most of them are still earning salaries for years. They exploit the gap in our processes. If Government wants to weed them out, they cannot rely on their bosses to get to know those who are doing such. Their bosses are compromised. Just tell them to be doing fingerprinting at the end of each week or each month, then you will realise how a lot of these ghost workers would be weeded out. Now the Govt should calculate how much they have "stolen" in salaries, tie it up to their passport number. As they are landing, get them arrested or ask them to pay the full amount with interest. Robust apps can be developed for this. You cannot get away with these with the US government. |
Fiscus105:So, a Senior Software Developer in Nigeria now working as a cleaner has not missed it? You will tell me he will someday get the job , right? What percentage of them actually ace their interviews? Where will he gets the time for continuous improvement after being used as a slave as a porter for many hours ?. Dont be generalistic when you type. And in case you have forgotten, this is what you typed: "Any adult Nigeria that migrated to any of these countries, Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, USA, Ireland and still wants to come back to Nigeria, because he /she is better of in Nigeria and he is not coming for political office, just know he/she has serious problems, and if you give such perdy 26billion, he/she will still poor. " Look at the the use of your word - "Any" |
Fiscus105:# So, a doctor who left John Hopskins in the US to Nigeria to set up his clinic has serious problems? [ https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/09/why-i-left-my-job-at-john-hopkins-usa-to-return-to-nigeria-after-25-years-medical-doctor/] Everyone cannot be you. If you do not have capacities for something or you have decided to live your entire life in western world, and die there, does not mean others will toe your path. Get it right |
There is nothing bad in travelling out of your country. People do, even in western world but you won't see westerners sounding condescending and insulting to their home countries. Americans move from US to other countries , no shout. Even the US passport that many of you consider as golden tickets, thousands of Americans voluntarily renounce it every year - they willingly gave up their citizenship [https://csglobalpartners.com/americans-are-renouncing-their-us-citizenship-here-is-why/] I have heard people in their adult lifes saying what has Nigeria done for them? Such an ingrate. It is now Nigerians realise that the FG has been paying subsidy on their education, fuel, electricity, USD, pilgrimmage just to mention a few. Now that the FG starts to remove the subsidies, all hell let loose yet you will say what has Nigeria done for you in the past.Going to another country does not mean a silver bullet and you will be wrong to generalise. People's case differ. Consider your own personal situation before you embark on it. If people are making it abroad like it is always mentioned here, they should be flying first class and build mansions in Nigeria. Most of these people shouting here are barely making it abroad but forming super commando online. As there are different levels in Nigeria, there are different levels abroad. Ask yourself realistically, what level are you operating where you are and stop stupid generalisation. |
PEACE2023:The sad part is majority of those who "resigned" are still earning salaries in Nigeria while they live abroad. The space they "left" should have been available for other Nigerians to fill but through greediness they keep the role while they share the salaries with their bosses, who gave them protection. Yet these set of individuals will still be blaming the FG for unemployment in Nigeria. I knew a guy that flew in from Canada to write promotion exam in Nigeria and flew back to Canada second day. An average Nigerian is born wicked and selfish. They complain about Govt today because they have no access to the National treasury. Give them a chance, they will ruin Nigeria as a country. |
IbeOkehie:So because you cited just one family that you knew who started as a driver and made it as a middle class in the US makes it the norm. While I agree with some of the points you raised, I still insist that these much touted "opportunities" people always talk about abroad are not meant for everyone, but only for highly skilled individuals. It is a reality which cannot be argued. And if i may ask, how is Nigeria a Socialist country according to your write up? or has socialism suddenly lost its meaning ? |
Mariangeles:Do you mind those individuals that have not been to airport making some silly permutation and combination ?. |
DaddyGngeess:Basic amenities are ONLY assured if you pay for them. There are people sleeping in darkness abroad because they do not have money to pay for their electricity bill. |
Mosdiii:You guys are comedians. I asked again - what is the percentage of people that have even 5000 USD in their account abroad as savings? People that live paycheck to paycheck and their accounts are constantly in red. I am not against anyone who wanna travel but stop making it sound like 16,000 USD is so easy to come by abroad. If some people abroad could be offered the same job they were doing before they left Nigeria, they would snatch your hands off to accept it back. Reason why most people cant come back to Nigeria is because they have nothing again to fall back on in Nigeria. |
Arabk25:Those opportunities can only be taken by people with the right skillsets. Not meant for everyone. If you have such a skillset, either you are abroad or in Nigeria, you wont have much complaint. Do not make it sound like the opportunities abroad are meant for everyone - Hell No! |
Karleb:How many people have 10k USD in their account abroad as savings? |
Embrace solar installation if you can. It makes my life smooth since I did. |
Three individuals shared this year Nobel Laureates in Economic. The trio researched into the reasons why some nations are rich while other nations are poor. Their researched established that “societies with a poor rule of law and institutions that exploit the population do not generate growth or change for the better.” , “When Europeans colonized large parts of the globe, the institutions in those societies changed,” the committee said, citing the economists’ work. While in many places this was aimed at exploiting the indigenous population, in other places it laid the foundations for inclusive political and economic systems. “The laureates have shown that one explanation for differences in countries’ prosperity is the societal institutions that were introduced during colonization,” the committee added. Countries that developed “inclusive institutions” – which uphold the rule of law and property rights – have over time become prosperous, while those that developed “extractive institutions” – which, in the laureates’ words, “squeeze” resources from the wider population to benefit the elites – have experienced persistently low economic growth. This one don sniff his white substance again. |
I don’t understand what people gain by taking hard drug. Are they not afraid of damage to their liver? |
attackgat:In Nigeria he would be wearing charm and carrying guns. He should have repeated the same in the UK. Someone who terrorises his people now fighting for their independence. Ckown |
damoobaba:Then you dont know Igboho. Go and ask the South Westerners about his antecedents. He is a very violent man. |
Dalohad:Be kidding. That's when you will see Anambra lording it over the rest, or either Oyo or Ogun proving superiority over the rest. |
attackgat:Igboho was a jester. On whose authority was he handing over the document? No wonder he was stopped at the door for one chef to collect the document from him. Igboho will taste Nigeria prison if he continues in this useless direction. |
Racoon:Law should not be considered part of the list. |
RealDaughter:Acting and probably gigolo |
wizod:All is for showbiz. Car will be returned to the dealer. |
FRSC is an irresponsible agency already. They ignore court injunctions which barred them from state roads. Always hunting for motorist on state roads, looking for faded plate numbers, which they sold to the motorists. |

almarthins:Laugh out loud. Well, your country, Nigeria. Is a member of OPEC. So she has to sell at the agreed price. Same with Saudis Arabia etc |
BigDawsNet:People are hungry all over the world but they have a functional welfare system which is run by strict tax laws. So, the government supports those in need in minimal ways. In Nigeria, if they want to widen the tax net , you will complain. Do you know US govt collects tax on tip? Let me make it clear , if you go to a restaurant, after eating, you tip the guy who serves you like 10 dollars. Do you know that guy will pay tax on that 10 USD. Imagine the hell that will descend if Nigeria govt does that. You can’t have a robust benefit system without strict tax laws. |
Parable007:If truly you are a Yoruba, shame on you. Yorubas are mostly educated and reasonable. In the so-called western world you guys are always quick to reference, market forces determine the price at the pump station. Nigeria runs a capitalistic economy, and she’s rightly allowing market forces determining the cost. Do you even know how much it cost to produce a litre of petrol? The era of 170 naira per litre is forever gone. Right now, there is an increase to every litre of petrol all over the world. Or can you sell your own product below the cost price? So, what the heck are you talking about here? |
badoh:Section 260 and 275 of the 1999 Nigeria constitution makes sharia law legal and constitutional. It is enshrined in the constitution. It’s not a state law as you would have assumed. |
The Abuja high court made the determination using Nigeria constitution. If any state law clashes with the constitution, (I.e. runs contrary to the Nigeria constitution ) such state law is rendered null and void. In this case, Lagos was trying to be half clever by testing the law. This was an affront to the Nigerian constitution which is supreme over all states law. Lagos state should be dragged before the Supreme Court, |
