The HIV/AIDS infection rate in Ebonyi has dropped from three to 0.9 per cent, Mr Ezzagu Nwiboko, the state Coordinator, Ebonyi State Action Committee on AIDS (EBOSACA), has said. Nwiboko made the disclosure on Monday in an interview in Abakaliki. He said that the figure represented a drastic reduction in the infection rate. “We used to record two or more cases of the virus in every hundred. “We will not rest on our oars till we bring it down to zero per cent. “We are still worried that the prevalence of the scourge is still high among the commercial sex workers and drivers. “A visit to places where these long-distant drivers stop for relaxation and where commercial sex workers operate shows that HIV is easily contracted there,” he said. Nwiboko said that the agency was currently experiencing shortage of anti-retroviral drugs to be distributed to the people living with HIV/ AIDS. “This is hampering our service delivery. “We have made arrangements to take delivery of anti-retroviral drugs in the next three months from new donor-partners. “The agreement we had with our previous partners has elapsed; we commend the state government for its tremendous funding of our activities. “We still encourage individuals, especially the youths, to develop safe-sex culture. “This will enable us and other concerned agencies to effectively manage the prevailing cases and eradicate new infections,” he said. www.vanguardngr.com/2017/03/hivaids-infection-rate-drops-ebonyi-official/ lalasticlala mynd44 |

By Peter Okutu ABAKALIKI-THE Igbo apex body, Ohaneze Ndigbo Thursday insisted that Igbo Presidency without restructuring the nation’s political sphere will still not end the agitations coming from various ethnic groups across the country. The National Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr. Uche Achi-Okaga, who in a statement issued in Abakaliki, explained that Ohaneze was an organized and focused organization added that no amount of propaganda on issue of Igbo presidency would distract it from pursuing its core mandate of protecting the welfare and interest of Ndigbo in every part of the country. According to the group, Ohaneze will not identify with any political party that is not in tandem with the call for the restructuring of the country. The statement read in part: “Mind you that in Ohaneze we are focused, so that one cannot use the issue of Igbo presidency to distract us. On restructuring we stand. Igbo presidency without restructuring will make little or no difference neither would the various ethnic agitations cease. “Defection of some Igbo personalities to the All Progressive Congress, APC, is of no relevance to Ohaneze. One can defect to Heaven or hell but Ndigbo will not identify with any political party that is not in marriage with restructuring. “Governor Okorocha can speak for Imo APC or the government of Imo State, but he is not in a good stead to speak for Ndigbo. “On the rumoured death of the President, God forbid that we should wish anybody death because death is like an identity card which we all have with its attendant expiry date. “However, if you occupy a public position maintained with tax payers money (including but not limited to medical trips) it behooves that you should account to them in all ramifications. The presidential Aids who are keeping mum on the President’s health condition are severely owing Nigerians that obligation. “It smells to high heavens that even the Minister of Information (who is also paid with tax payers money) cannot inform Nigerians on the issue. Instead, he prefers to tell us about the stale news of ‘information about Book Haram. “The issue affecting Apostle Suleiman suggests that the truth is hidden. We read in the tabloids that Northern Governors said the rampaging herdsmen are foreigners, non of the security agencies refuted or questioned the Governors. “Now does it mean that we should allow foreigners to come and be killing Nigerians? We demand an explanation even as we condemn violence and inciting words or actions”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/igbo-presidency-without-restructuring-will-not-end-ethnic-agitations-ohanaeze-ndigbo/ lalasticlala mynd44 |
By Vincent Ujumadu & By Omeiza Ajayi Awka —THE verbal war between Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and his Anambra State counterpart, Chief Willie Obiano, took another dimension yesterday, with Governor Obiano telling Okorocha to keep quiet when serious governors are talking because he (Okorocha) has nothing to offer. The attack on each was a fallout of a statement credited to Okorocha during the South-East stakeholders meeting of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Owerri, where Okorocha claimed that three governors in the zone would soon defect to APC. Angered by the statement, Obiano, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. James Eze, said Okorocha had not provided the kind of leadership that would make Igbo people to join him in APC. Reacting to Obiano’s statement, Chief Press Secretary to Okorocha, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, referred from Obiano as a clueless governor, prompting another reaction by Obiano’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Strategic Communication and Legislative Matters, Prince Oliver Okpala, yesterday, who said that Igbo people know who is a better governor between Obiano and Okorocha. The statement circulated by Okpala read: “If a governor that has constructed countless number of roads and bridges, embarked on several rural electrification programmes, constructed uncountable number of schools, and health facilities as well as rid the entire Anambra State of crime and criminality, is being termed clueless by Okorocha, then there must be another meaning for clueless. Aggressive governor, “Okorocha’s claim that there is a general impression that Chief Willie Obiano is an aggressive governor, who should have done better as a militant than as a governor, is laughable and it is clear to Nigerians who really is a motor park personality between them. “Obiano has always been known and accorded the respect of a complete gentleman. Indeed, Okorocha is an example of what a leader should not be. Who is he to teach the virtues of leadership ideas and service to Governor Obiano? “He talks of ideas when he cannot pay workers salaries and now tries to intimidate Imo retirees to forfeit 60 per cent arrears of their sweat. Are those the kind of ideas we need at this critical time? Those are destructive ideas, and a destructive idea cannot bring about constructive ends. Achievements “Rochas challenged Obiano to publish his achievements in Anambra State. But the whole world knows of his feat in this regard. From making Anambra to attain a crime-free status, rapid industrialization by rehabilitation of roads and constructing new ones; demolition of a 30-year old mountain of refuse in Okpoko two years ago; putting public facilities in place such as the 47 solar- powered boreholes that now serve 27 communities and increasing Anambra State IGR from the N500m monthly that it inherited to N1.3bn per month, to clearing the arrears of salaries owed the state water corporation staff as well as the approximately N1bn pension that was owed local government retirees inherited by the administration. Obiano has been a superlative performer. “But this cannot be said of Governor Okorocha, whose so-called popular policies, like free education at all levels, have been a fluke and at best an over bloated media hype. His other so-called programmes have also been discovered to be mere flash in the pan as the people of Imo State have seen through his tricks and treachery, as well as other clandestine tendencies. “Okorocha claimed that Obiano has taken Anambra State several kilometres backward, but the records are there to show who has taken his state backward. When serious Governors like Obiano are talking, the likes of Okorocha should keep quiet. This is a governor who has failed woefully to pay workers salaries. “He is also heavily indebted to even pensioners, who have spent their youth and strength to labour for the state. In their old age, Okorocha’s government has abandoned them at this most critical time that they need the state. What an abomination.” Moghalu slams Okorocha over Nnamani Meanwhile, National Auditor of the APC, Chief George Moghalu, has berated Okorocha for attempting to determine the leadership of the party in the South-East geo-political zone. At a meeting hosted by Chief Okorocha in Owerri, last week, the governor had allegedly declared a former Senate President, Ken Nnamani, who recently defected to the party as its leader in the region. Reacting to the development, yesterday, in Abuja, Moghalu said it was impossible to foist Nnamani on the zonal chapter of the party as its leader. “You see one thing about leadership, I have said it time and time again, a leader is not appointed. You can elect a chairman, you can elect a secretary, a governor or a president. A leader evolves from among the people.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/02/obiano-vs-okorocha-okorocha-keep-quiet-serious-govs-talking-obiano/ cc mynd44 lalasticlala |

By Emma Una CALABAR— A misunderstanding over a portion of farmland, between the people of Obudu in Cross River State and their Mgberedem neighbours in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, has led to a communal conflict, which has left many people dead while several others sustained gunshot injuries. The conflict, which has been raging since Tuesday, according to a source in the area, Augustine Ogar, started when the Mgberedem people allegedly destro-yed farms cultivated by the people of Obudu in the disputed land. Ogar said: “The land in dispute is right behind the Federal College of Education, Obudu, and we have been farming there for decades. “Suddenly, the Mgberedem people started encroaching on the land and each time our people use the land, the Mgberedem people would either harvest the crops or destroy them.” He said on Sunday, while people were in churches, the Mgberedem people invaded the farmland and destroyed crops. When, Monday, Obudu people went to their farms and saw the destruction, they sent a delegation to the Mgbertedem people on Tuesday to find out who destroyed their crops, and a fight broke out with machetes and guns freely used. Ogar added: “Many people in Obudu and Mgberedem have sustained gunshot injuries, but I cannot say the number of those who might have died.” He said policemen and soldiers have been dispatched there last night and hopefully peace would be restored. According to him, “all farming activities and trade between the two communities have been put on hold. “People are no longer going to farm and the Mgberedem people, who usually bring items for sale in our market have stopped coming.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/01/many-feared-dead-c-river-benue-communities-clash-farmland/ lalasticlala mynd44 OAM4J |
