I weep for Nigeria.... This is tomorrow in disguise...

My fellow Influencers and Tweeters, this is the fourth time I have taken the oath of office. Today, I will talk about what I hope to leave for my successor.

With humility we can say that, thanks to the generations who came before us, our country is the greatest that has ever existed. Our ancestors freed themselves from a colonial yoke, weathered a civil war, abolished slavery, helped achieve victory in two world wars, developed technological and engineering marvels and cherished the privilege of freedom of speech and civil liberties.

People around the world look at us and say the twentieth century was the time of the American Empire. Yet every great Empire eventually has crumbled. Our job is to make sure that the United States is the first country of the modern era to prosper for several centuries and – my friends – that means together we have much work to do.

We have made tremendous progress – both abroad and at home. We will soon have withdrawn our armies from their long campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan. We have weakened the leadership of Al Qaeda.

Here at home the complexion and nature of our country is changing.

We are becoming a majority minority nation. By mid-century Hispanics, Asian Americans and blacks will account for a majority of the United States. Same sex marriages are now conducted in ten states.

Our geologists have recently uncovered greater reserves of oil beneath our land than we ever imagined. Private enterprise has figured out ways to build driver-less cars, put satellites in space and extract information from the genome that will transform medicine. Some manufacturing companies are even returning from overseas. And, our philanthropists have saved millions of people around the world from the scourge of malaria, polio and AIDS.

In the past few decades we have shown the world what we can do when we set our minds to it.

Thirty years ago American cars averaged 18 miles per gallon. By 2025 they will average over 54 miles per gallon.

Forty years ago some of our rivers were so polluted they caught fire. Today they are teeming with fish. Yes we can.

Fifty years ago nearly one in two of Americans smoked. Today only 19% do – and I am trying hard to quit that club. Yes I can.

Yet my fellow Americans we face profound challenges. Our country is becoming poorer not richer. Median household income has not moved since the late 1980s and our economy has been stagnant for more than a decade. When I first took office about 32 million people received food stamps. Today, sadly, food stamps are given to almost 50 million Americans. Furthermore, we face countries around the world whose people are eager to improve their lot in life and are brimming with the ambition that – once upon a time – fueled the dreams of Americans.

It is clear that we have a great task before us.

But first, I have some confessions to make. In my last my four years we did not have healthcare reform. Instead we expanded insurance coverage to every American. In my next four years I will actually embark on comprehensive healthcare reform. Does it make sense that at nearly 20% of GDP in 2009, our health spending is half as much again as any other country and nearly twice the average? Americans spend nearly $3000 per person per year more than in Switzerland which has about the same standard of living. We need to stop giving doctors and incentives to order tests, perform operations, prolong hospital stays and game the payment system. Instead, we need to provide citizens with first-rate healthcare at a fraction of today’s cost.

It sobers me to admit that our country and almost every state and city will drown in debt unless we do something profound. The great state of California – which by itself is the ninth largest economy in the world – is, because of hundreds of billions of dollars of unfunded pension and healthcare liabilities and unrealistic expectations about future investment returns, essentially insolvent. Our national debt today is $16 trillion - almost triple what it was in 2000. In 2008 we spent $2.5 trillion. This year, even though our economy has not grown, we will spend $3.5 trillion. We must ask ourselves would any sane person, who has seen his income shrunk and is struggling to devise a payment plan with his credit card company, go on a massive spending binge? It’s a formula that does not work.

For decades Democrats and Republicans have made promises that we now find cannot be honored. It pains me to say that we need to restructure our social security system, Medicare and Medicaid. We need to do so in a way that maintains the spirit of these systems without bankrupting our country. One change I will seek is an increase in the official retirement age. One hundred years ago – shortly before the dawn of our welfare system the average American man had a life expectancy of 46 years. We need to adjust to the fact that this is now almost 80 years.

We need to change our approach to taxes and ask whether it is fair for the wealthy and middle-class to get a break on their living expenses – via mortgage deductions – when the single mom paying rent for an apartment gets no such break. This costs our country almost half a trillion dollars a year or almost 15% of the federal budget. Other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia, have no mortgage deductibility yet have higher home ownership rates than we do. We also should ask whether it is right for the buyout kings to have lower tax rates than the high school principal, librarian and nurse.

We have long lamented the decline of our educational system. In the next four years I want to make sure that half our student population – girls and young women – have the same opportunity as boys and young men. We need to encourage them women to study the sciences, engineering and math so that in a few decades half the brightest minds in our laboratories, research facilities and engineering departments are female.

I also intend to make sure the brightest young minds in the world come to America and stay in America. In the next four years we will engineer the immigration reform our country deserves. In addition, I plan to make sure that on the day a foreign student earns a Phd in the sciences, technology and engineering from a U.S. University they are automatically granted American citizenship.

While I will devote every fiber of my being to prevent more shooting atrocities, our nation, with hundreds of millions of guns in circulation, is an armed camp. Let me shoot straight: if we want to make real progress against armed violence we have to change the second amendment and allocate billions of dollars to a comprehensive gun amnesty. When, more than two centuries ago, are founding fathers drafted the second amendment they did not imagine that our government would spend $700 billion a year on a militia.

Americans have a higher risk of being murdered than do any other citizens in developed nations. Since that terrible day in Newtown, Connecticut more than 1,000 gun deaths have occurred in America. For over three decades more than 30,000 people a year have died in our country because of gun violence. Very soon more people will die because of guns than automobile accidents. Yes, we can and should outlaw assault rifles, ban the sale of magazines and conduct comprehensive background checks but this should just be the start of our campaign to remove the bullet from everyday life.

It pains me to say that we have super-sized ourselves. The weight of the average man in in American between the age of 20 and 74 was 166 pounds in 1960. Today, it is almost 200 pounds. Almost four in ten Americans are officially obese. In 2000 no state had an obesity prevalence of 30%. Today there are twelve. Obesity, which increases the chance of heart disease, strokes, diabetes and various forms of cancer, is an enormous shadow tax on our society. Obesity is what smoking once was – a catastrophe. We will devise ways to encourage soda manufacturers, snack makers fast food restaurant operators and supermarkets help put America on a diet. Most of all I ask everyone to join me and cut the sugar, watch the salt and avoid fat. Dunking should mean basketball not doughnuts.

Finally and most importantly – as though by divine providence – our nation has been given a second chance. In the last few years – thanks to advanced exploration and software – more oil has been discovered in America than we ever thought possible. There is a good chance that we become energy independent and stop borrowing money from China to pay for oil from the Middle East. This is the miracle we never expected and is an opportunity we will not squander. We will extract this oil responsibly, use it wisely and follow the example of Norway by taking some of the profits to establish The National Recovery Fund – which will be used as the foundation to restore the economic health of our country.

My fellow Americans, if in the next four years we accomplish these goals, we then can all proclaim with pride these three words, ‘Yes, we did’.

2012 in retrospect

No doubt, 2012 will go down in the history of this country as one of the most challenging, in terms of security of lives and property. Following the precarious security situation in the country in 2012, which witnessed an unprecedented surge in crimes such as kidnapping and armed robbery, apart from the Boko Haram bloody insurgency in several parts of the North, President Goodluck Jonathan removed the Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Ringim and replaced him with Mohammed Abubakar in acting capacityon January 29, 2012 (he has since been confirmed as substantive IGP).

The appointment of Abubakar as the new helmsman of the force was applauded by Nigerians due to his pedigree as a tough and disciplined officer. Abubakar did not waste time, as he swung into action immediately. He dismantled the notorious roadblocks that had virtually become albatross to travellers across the country. The action has proved to be a huge success as the spate of armed robbery incidents on the nation’s highways dropped drastically. One begins to wonder whether there was a nexus between the dismantled police roadblocks and highway robbery, kidnapping, and ritual killings, just as Boko Haram insurgency continues to hold several states in the North hostage.

Below are some of the high profile kidnap cases recorded last year. Some of the victims of high profile cases of kidnap in January included an eight-month pregnant medical doctor, Mrs. Chinma Okwor, who was kidnapped in front of her residence in Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Medical doctors in the state threatened to go on strike if the registrar in the Department of Radiology Medicine was not released. In Asaba, capital of Delta State, a house wife aided her husband, who was suspected of being the ring leader of the gang that kidnapped a traditional ruler in Bayelsa State. The kidnappers demanded for N20 million ransom and later settled for N5 million. Also in Asaba, four heavily armed men kidnapped the Agency Stamp Officer of Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, Mrs. Josephine Eke. They abducted her in her office, along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, at gunpoint.

A German national, Mr. Raupach Edgar, who was working with a Kano-based construction company, Dantata and Sawoe, was abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers. Edgar was abducted at construction site along Kano – Zaria Road, 25 kilometres away from the state capital. In March, a businessman and a United Arab Emirate (UAE) national, Mohammed Ismael Al-Ali, was lured to Nigeria for a phantom business. Al-Ali was kidnapped in the process and kept for 60 days at Aboriogun village in Isokan Local Governemnt Area of Osun State. The kidnappers demanded for $5-million ransom.

The State Security Service (SSS) arrested seven persons in connection with the dastardly act. Luck ran out on the kidnappers when the joint efforts of Government of Nigeria and UAE teamed up and rescued the victim and arrested his alleged abductors without paying the $5-million ransom. Fatal rescue mission

The kidnappers, who abducted Chris McManus and his Italian engineer colleague, Francesco Molinara, had agreed with their negotiator for one-million pounds ransom. A Mauritanian News agency, Agence Nouakchott D’ Information, which is known to have close contacts with al-Queda in the Islamic Magreb (AQIM), said the gang that abducted the duo had already received part payment before the British Intelligence and their Nigerian counterparts located the hideouts of the kidnappers at Unguwar Rogo Round About, near Sokoto State History Bureau.

The two bodies of intelligence raided the kidnappers den in Sokoto State, which led to the killing of McManus and Molinara by their abductors, on Thursday, March 8. On March 6, four hefty men kidnapped the Head of Operations of Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) Branch of Eco- Bank Plc., Mrs. Olajumoke Oyegbola, at gun point, around Isheri Town, near OPIC Estate, along Lagos – Ibadan Expressway, Lagos. The Mitsubishi Montero Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was abandoned at Tinubu Estate Road, Isheri North, Lagos. In Delta, a journalist kidnapped was lucky to escape from the hands of his captors.

The pressman, Monday Whiskey, was abducted on Orhuworhun Road, Udu Local Government Area, as he was driving into his compound. He escaped from the kidnappers’ den in Ughelli, Delta State. Abduction of Queen mother Barely 24-hour after Whiskey escaped from his captors, a 102-year-old mother of a monarch was kidnapped in Delta State. The kidnappers of the queen mother of the paramount ruler of Mosogar Kingdom in Ethiope Local Government Area of the State, Mrs. Okpa Omene, demanded for N100, 000 million ransom. The Delta State Police Command later arrested seven suspects in connection with the case.

Asime, wife of Senator George Sekibo of Rivers State, was kidnapped alongside two others on March 24. Senator Sekibo, who is representing Rivers East Senatorial District, took the matter to Joint Task Force (JTF), which launched manhunt for the perpetrators. Asime was with three other persons in her Hummer Sports Utility Vehicle when the hoodlums struck. They were kidnapped under Obiri Ikwerre Bridge, near University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT). The vehicle was later abandoned at Aluu community near UNIPORT (remember the community called Aluu where four university students were brutally killed through jungle justice in broad day light?). Ex- Ananmbra Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chieftain, Chief Ifeatu Obiokoye, was kidnapped during the party’s convention when people were jostling for who would become the party’s National Publicity Secretary. In April, three siblings were remanded in prison custody by an Oshogbo Magistrate Court for allegedly kidnapping a banker.

They were accused of conspiracy and kidnap of the Operations Manager of Guarantee Trust Bank Plc., Oshogbo Branch, Adeyemi Adeniji. April 23 was a day of sorrow and tears for the Nzewis, following the killing of one of their bread winners, former Ohaneze Ndigbo boss and a chieftain of PDP, Chief John Nzewi, by kidnappers. The Nzewi family parted with N30 million, which they offered to the kidnappers as ransom, yet they killed him. The family could not immediately raise the N50 million his abductors demanded. He was killed weeks after his kidnap during the re-run Senatorial election in Anambra South District, at Ihiala council area. Ex- Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Godfrey Dikeocha, was kidnapped on March 9 by armed men at his country home, Oke Ovuru in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. His abductors demanded for N20 million. For about one month, the family could not raise the money.

The father in-law of the kidnapped former Speaker, Justice Michael Eziri, died of shock as a result of the kidnap of his son- in-law. A Spanish doctor, Jose Manuel Corcuera, was kidnapped on April 4 in Enugu. Corcuera was released by his captors on Friday, April 20. It was not known whether a ransom was paid to the abductors of the doctor, who works with Niger Foundation Hospital, financially supported by Catholic institution, Opus Dei. Trigger-happy Kidnappers shot dead Chisom Ezechinwoye, 15-year-old daughter of former member of Anambra State House of Assembly, Anthony Ezechinwoye.

The kidnappers also wounded his wife, Veronica, who was later rushed to a hospital. The two victims were moving in a Mercedes Benz 190 car when suddenly a five-man gang of kidnappers blocked them close to All Hallows Junction, Onitsha, in Anambra State. Veronica resisted the attempt by the kidnappers to drag her into the boot of the vehicle. They fired her in the leg and another bullet hit the Senior Secondary School 2 student of Mercy Secondary School, Chisom, and she died on the spot. A 34-year-old businessman, Stephen Orjiakor, who was about to do his traditional marriage in Anambra State on April 16 was kidnapped less than 24 hours to the occasion.

His kidnap threw both families and friends into confusion. The kidnappers demanded N50 million from the family. Orjiakor pleaded that the family had no such money. He said his master could afford N2 million. Kidnappers abducted one of the presidential aides on petroleum matters cum retired Senior Staff of Shell Petroleum Development Company (SDPC), Ottih John Ottih. Ottih was abducted on his way to Church, St. Michael’s Catholic Church at Awa, in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State. Reverend father Samuel Nwika was abducted on April 23 at about 2.30am.

Members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Onne, Rivers State, wept when the news filtered into their ears that the man of God had been kidnapped. The kidnappers fed Nwika with only water for six days. On Sunday, May 6, songs of praise rent the air in the church as the priest was released.

On May 1, a Pharmaceutical director, Chief Charles Uwakem, was abducted at gun point by suspected kidnappers. Uwakem, who hails from Mbieri in Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State, was kidnapped from his office, situated along Douglas Raod, Owerri, at about 7.30 pm. On May 3, the Chief Executive Officer of Pedero Down Nigeria Limited, Otunba Femi Ogunleye, was kidnapped in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Policemen from the Rivers State Police Command later moved to the hideouts of the hoodlums and engaged them in a gun duel. The crime fighters rescued the victim and also recovered the N3 million ransom already paid to the hoodlums. On May 6, a newly elected traditional ruler of Awo Mbieri autonomous community in Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State, Eze Oliver Nwozuzu, and his wife were kidnapped from the church where they went to worship. Worshippers in St. Peters Catholic Church scampered for safety as the kidnappers fired into the air before abducting the couple.

They were bundled into a waiting car, which zoomed off immediately. The political tussle between members of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN ) took a different dimension in Osun State, this month as one of the leaders of the PDP in Osun State, Mr. Adedotun Adebowale, 51, and two other members, Wale Ojo, 42, Adewole Ogunleye, 43, were arraigned before an Osogbo Magistrate Court for kidnapping. They were accused of kidnapping a member of ACN, Mr. James Olusola, who was a ward agent of the ACN. The sports world was not left out as Nigeria midfielder, Christian Obodo was kidnapped in June this year. The Udinese player was kidnapped in front of a Church at Effurun, Warri, in Delta State. One of the editors of Imo Broadcasting Corporation (IBC), Chief Ndubuizu Ugorji, was kidnapped on June 2 at the gate of the company. A medical doctor, Frank Chukwudi, was abducted on Tuesday, June 19, in Port Harcourt. His captors demanded for N150 million ransom, which they later reduced to N12 million. The traditional ruler of Ifakala autonomous community, in Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State, Eze Michael Ekeruo, was kidnapped at about 1pm, in front of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Ifakala. That was the second time the king would be kidnapped and an undisclosed ransom was paid. Delta State recorded so many high profile kidnap cases, which included abduction of Tobechukwu Ochei, the younger brother to the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Victor Ochei.

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe’s sister, Mrs. Zokumor, Madam Suzanne Elumelu, 80, mother of former Group Managing Director of the United Bank for Africa (UBA), Mr. Tony Elumelu, wife of the Commissioner of Basic Education in Delta State, Prof. Patrick Muobaghare, Samuel Uduaghan, 70, cousin to Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, former chairman of Aniocha South Local Government, Emmanuel Sorokwu, Markson, son of the secretary to the State Government, Ovuozorie Macaulay were among the high profile victims of kidnap in Delta State.

The kidnappers smiled to the bank with millions of naira from the victims’ families. Samuel Uduaghan’s abductors demanded for N50 million ransom. Six suspected kidnappers of Uduaghan were arrested by police detectives from the Delta State Police Command. Kidnappers also abducted Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s lawyer’s wife in Port Harcourt, on June 19. Ifedayo Adedipe’s wife was kidnapped in Obior/ Akpor Local Government area at about 7.30 am. Missing Alhaji Rasaq Gawat was suspected to have been abducted by some unknown kidnappers in Lagos.

Policemen in Asaba foiled the kidnap of Head of Service (HOS) of Delta State, Mr. Okey Ofodili. The suspected kidnappers shot Ofodili in the leg. The hoodlums attacked Ofodili at Inter-Bau Roundabout and dragged him into their waiting vehicle. The dredging master and supervisor of Practical Dredging and Marine Company Limited, Effurun , Delta State, were kidnapped at the project site of the company in Egrangbene community in Burutu Local Government Area of the state. The victims were abducted at gunpoint. Their captors demanded for N30 million ransom.

The kidnappers of the traditional ruler of Ukpor, in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State, Igwe Robert Eze, demanded for N100 million ransom. The traditional ruler was kidnapped on Sunday, July 29. Diepreye Darego, the daughter of former Senator, Nimi Barigha-Amanga, was abducted by gunmen suspected to be kidnappers. Darego was kidnapped on Friday, July 27 along the Port Harcourt International Airport Road, Port Harcourt while on her way to pick her sister from the airport. The hoodlums were said to have blocked the vehicle she was driving and after shooting at it severally, forcefully dragged Darego out and into an unknown destination. On August 13, the Delta State High Court judge, Justice Marcel Okoh, was abducted and kept for eight days. The kidnappers demanded for N40 million ransom.

Judges in Delta State boycotted courts because of the kidnap of Okoh. The victim was released from his captors’ den 10 days after. A medical doctor, Dr. Blessing Obidike, was kidnapped at gunpoint by gunmen at Chobba, in Rivers State, on Sunday 5. The Vice Chancellor of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), Prof. Cyprian Onyeji was kidnapped in front of the institution at about 11.30 am. Onyeji was abducted on Wednesday, August 15, in Enugu State. His abductors demanded for N200 million. Enugu State Police Command arrested a nine- man gang who claimed to be responsible for the kidnap of Onyeji and some other kidnap activities in South East region. A fierce gun battled ensued between the crime fighters and the hoodlums at Safety Hotel, located at Uwani axis of the State. Police also recovered guns and ammunition.

The traditional ruler of Okordia in Ikarama community, Yenagoa Local Government area, Richard Seiba, 70, was kidnapped in his palace at about 2am. His captors demanded for N30 million ransom from his wife. Seiba was rescued by Joint Task Force and State Security Service (SSS) without paying the ransom. Seiba said his captors flogged him before his release. The Deputy Registrar of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Mrs. Rose Nwachukwu -Agbado, was kidnapped on Wednesday 15, while entering her compound in Owerri, Imo State. The victim is the wife of a dean in the Abia State University, Uturu. Also kidnapped is a senior secretary of FUTO, Virginia.

Kidnappers abducted a branch manager of a new generation bank, Ukwu Orji, in Awka, Anambra State, on Wednesday, August 29. Abductors of the Principal Secretary to Imo State Governor, Mr. Emenike Ihekwoaba did not open channels for negotiation four days after his kidnap. The family of the biochemistry lecturer at the University Of Uyo (UNIUYO), Prof. Sunny Odoemena who was kidnapped by gunmen on August 11 were yet to see him nine days after abduction. His abductors demanded for N50 million ransom which they later reduced to N12 million.

The proprietor of Arthur Garden Hotel, in Nkpor, Idemili Local Gevernment area of Anambra State, Mr. Christopher Udo was arraigned in an Ogidi Magistrate Court for allegedkidnap and armed robbery. The prosecutor, Mr. C.A. Oribaba told the court that the accused person demanded N2 million ransom from their victim and had received N560, 000.00 to release him. All the three hotels own by Udo have been sealed by the police. The Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the Edo State Governor, Comrade Kelly Odaro, was kidnapped in September, in Benin. Odaro left Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat and was going home when the hoodlums at about 6.30 pm abducted him on Ikpoba Hill, Benin City.

A hotelier and a businessman, Chief Segun Oyebolu was abducted in front of his office in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. His abductors demanded for N400 million ransom. The traditional ruler of Igburu community in Ogba/ Egbema/ Ndoni Local Government area of Rivers State, Eze Okwu Osisan was kidnapped along Egbada – Omoku Road, Rivers State.

The abductors demanded N10 million ransom initially but later reduced the amount to N500, 000.00. Kidnappers abducted Commissioner for Higher Education in Delta State, Professor Hope Eghagha in September. The hoodlums trailed him from Warri to Owo Ekei Junction in Ika North East Local Government. The principal of Agulu Boys Secondary School in Aniaocha Local Government of Anambra State, Mr. Felix Maduka was kidnapped in October. The principal was kidnapped at about 3pm alongside his driver. Muiba, the first Wife of the Speaker of Osun State House Assembly, Mr. Najeem Salaam was kidnapped in Ejigbo area of Osun State. The kidnappers demanded N200 million ransom.

Vigilante group in Oshun State later rescued Muiba five days after without ransom. Two of the alleged kidnappers were arrested. In November, three expatriates were kidnapped and a construction worker was shot dead in Ughelli area of Delta State. Kidnappers stopped Judge from sitting for two months as they demanded N20 million ransom. The kidnap of Justice Flora Azinge of the Otor- Udu High Court created fear in the minds of her colleagues, who abandoned sitting for about two months. Police arrested three suspects while one was on the run.

Also in December, Wife of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Mrs. Folasade Onademuren, was allegedly kidnapped in Ijebu Ode area of Ogun State. Professor Kemene Okonjo, 82, mother of the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was abducted by a 10-man gang in front of her husband’s palace in Ogwashi-Uku area of Delta Stateon Sunday, December 10. The kidnappers first demanded for $1 billion dollars ransom.

They later reduced the amount to N 200, 000,000.00. Both soldiers and crack police detectives were sent to comb Delta and fish out the perpetrators. Soldiers arrested 63 suspects including a Divisional Police Officer (DPO). The kidnappers’ leader was shot dead during gun duel with the police. The victim was brought to their palace at Ogawshi-Uku on a motorcycle after which she was flown to Abuja where she received treatment in a hospital. On December 11, gunmen kidnapped Titilayo, wife of the former governor of Western Region, Gen. Oluwole Rotimi (Retd).

Titilayo was abducted in Ibadan, Oyo State capital at about 6.30pm. Like kidnapping, heinous crimes such as armed robbery and murder continue unabated inspite of the fresh impetus in the police. However, it must be noted that in Lagos State the police met force with force in several encounters with robbers. In most of the cases, the police prevailed over the men iof the underworld although not without few casualties on the side of gallant officers. As the Lagos State comparatively enjoyed relative calm, other States in South West experienced several devastating robbery attacks as they relocate their operations from Lagos .

Lagos was to have her share of bitter taste of the activities of robbers in September when a 12-man gang practically run riot through the metropolis on a Sunday. During the three hours orgy of violence, three policemen were mowed down while number civilians were also killed and millions of naira snatched from local forex dealers. Police have since arrested most members of the gang and recovered several arms and ammunition. Below is synopsis of major robbery incidents recorded last year (2012). The Lagos State police command was able to recover 400 stolen vehicles within the period between January and July.

The police also exchanged gun duel several times with armed robbers. During two of the encounter two police inspectors attached to Apapa Police Police Division who were killed by the men of the underworld within one month. The two policemen, Taiwo Ajetunmobi and Femi Adebanjo displayed their braveness as they were able to kill those that shot them. While Ajetunmobi was shot, Adebanjo was stabbed to death with a bayonet. Edo State armed robbers also killed three soldiers, 15 civilians at Auchi, Edo State, in November and carted away N3.5 million from banks.

Angered by the killing of their colleagues, soldiers took over the security in Auchi. Same month gunmen suspected to be robbers killed five policemen in Borno. Anambra: In October, Anambra Police Command bust a deadly female teenagers armed robbery gang.

The four females were arrested by men of the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS). The four female suspects confessed to have combined prostitution with armed robbery. Police gave their names as Ngozi, Ujunwa, Chizoba and Happiness. The quartet had another suspect, Pa Anne Ezumezu who they described as their godfather and chief mentor in crime. The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ballah Nasarawa said the gang have been terrorizing the State for so long until luck ran out on them. The reign of One Million Boys, a notorious armed robbery gang that operated from Ajegunle area of Lagos State cannot be forgotten in a hurry. The One million Boys later promoted themselves to One million and One Boys. Before the police crushed them, The gang would order a son to have canal knowledge of his mother or sister; the gang would also order a father to have canal knowledge of his daughter.

If anybody disobeyed, the bandits would kill the person. The members of the gang were about 100 and they moved in group with their arms. They even wrote letters to streets to wait for them that they were coming to operate there. As the name One Million Boys sent jitters down the spine of their victims, policemen from Lagos State Police Command swung into action and arrested about 407 people suspected to be members of the gang. To curtail the activities of armed robbers who usually operate on motorcycles, the Lagos State Government restricted the movement of motorcycles to certain streets in Lagos. In some areas such as Apapa, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Ikeja and FESTAC, were no-go- areas for motorcycles.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko said 98% of armed robbery cases in the state were committed by motorcycle riders. Three policemen were killed by armed robbers who were robbing Apostolic Church in Ijemo-Agbadu area of Abeokuta, Ogun State. The robbers shot sporadically into the air to scare people before embarking on their operation. The two police inspectors and a sergeant were responding to a distress call that robbers were on rampage in the area. Unknown to the policemen, some of the robber, had laid ambush for them. Immediately they arrived close to the scene, they opened fire on them. Suspected armed robbers shot 20 people dead and wounded others in a mosque, in Dago Dawa, Birnin- Gwari Local Government area of Kaduna, Kaduna State. The attack occurred at about 5.30 am when the muslims were leaving the mosque after the early morning prayer. A traditional ruler in the area suspected that it was a reprisal attack because the community had killed some armed robbers in the area.

An armed robbery kingpin who is also a dismissed police sergeant, Eboma Onyeka had revealed that he spent N1.4 million to secure bail illegally from court. Onyeka and three members of his gang, Sunday Gabriel, Gambo Feman and Ezekiel Omoloye were arrested and remanded in prison custody for alleged armed robbery and vandalising of Automated Teller Machines owned by different banks across the State. Procurement of illegal freedom After they were remanded, the attacks on teller machines reduced drastically. But after some months the spate increased. Lagos State Police Command became worried. Police detectives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, Lagos used their contacts to to know whether the accused persons were still in prison custody or not.

To their chagrin, the alleged robbers have been released. Police had to trail Onyeka and arrest him and others. Onyeka confessed that he paid the court N1.4 million to regain his freedom. Imo State Police Command arrested three suspected armed robbers who invaded St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, inside Imo State Polytechnics, Umuagwo, Ohaji/ Egbema Local government area of Imo State.

The suspects were said to have robbed Reverend Father Wilson, a resident priest attached to the church of his N150, 000 and mobile phones. On November 17 Zone 10 police Command, Sokoto arrested a prison officer and three others for armed robbery. Also a fake soldier, Israel Amusu, 24, was arrested for armed robbery. Also in the same month, robbers who were armed with sophisticated weapons attacked an Estate close to Goshen Estate, in Lekki area of Lagos State, and crippled Armoured Personal Carrier (APC) with bullets. Ekiti State Police Command arrested 15 undergraduates for armed robbery. The 15 suspects were students of a polythecnics.

They were said to have been arrested in a white mini bus during operation. Robbery kingpins and police serial killers met their waterloo as they surrendered to the superior firing power of the police in Lagos. Police recovered 10 guns, several loaded magazines and ammunition. The gang confessed to have attacked First Bank in Ekiti State and the World Oil Filling station, a few months back.

Their names are Taofeek Mumuni, Gbenga Oni, Ogbonna Ekene, Kundus Adetona, Ejike Mbogu, Ayomide Oyebanji, Shola Ayodele, Yemi Ayodeji, Seyi Aluko and Gani Moshood. They confessed to have killed some policemen and stole their guns. Robbers were also on rampage along Benin Bye pass, Benin City.

They robbed passengers in luxury and mini buses. Murder One of the worst crimes recorded in Lagos is murder. One of the murder that made the ears to tingle was a man who was allegedly killed by his siblings for ritual purpose. People went to the police station at FESTAC to report about an offensive odour emanating from a duplex in FESTAC. The (former) Divisional Police Officer of the Station, CSP Mohammed Mu’azu led a team of policemen to the scene and they arrested Toye Ajayi and Omotola Ajayi who was holding a polythene bag.

They were moving them to the station when they discovered that the offensive odour was still oozing out, they searched the polythene bag and found human parts. The police moved back to the scene and found two human heads including that of Akinbuyi Ajayi.

The decomposing body of Akinbuyi Ajayi, 39, was found inside one of the rooms in his late father’s duplex on B Close, House 6 of 3rd Avenue, FESTAC Town, Lagos, on July 26, Police also found charms and amulets at the scene. People believed they killed them for rituals. the suspects said they did not know what came over them. In July 2012, Cynthia Osokogu, the daughter of a retired army General, Francis Osokogu was killed in a hotel in Festac Town, Lagos by friends she allegedly met on facebook. She was said to have been killed by first administering her with Rohypnol Flunitrapezam, then tried and tortured her before she was strangled to death. On the 52nd Independence Day Celebration, 43 students were massacred in a private hostel, Mubi, Adamawa State.

The victims were students of School of Health Technology, Mubi, Adamawa State University and Federal polytechnic Mubi. On October 5, 2012, four students of University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT) were lynched in Umuakiri Village, Aluu, Rivers State, by mob over spurious allegation of theft of a laptop computer and a Black berry mobile phone.

The murdered students, Chiadika Lordson, Ugonna Kelechi Obusor, Mike Lloyd Toku and Tekena Elkanah, were all 200 Level students. Three staff of Pipelines and Product Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), were murdered by pipeline vandals at Arepo, Ogun State. The slain staff comprising engineer and technicians, met their untimely death on September 8, 2012, after they had gone to put out the raging fire from a vandalises pipeline.

A Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Sale Abubakar Ningi was assassinated along with a friend and his driver while returning from his factory at Dakata Sauna, Kawaji Industrial layout, on the outskirt of Kano metropolis on June 5, by unknown gunmen on motorcycle.

In July, a retired army General, Sylvester Eruah was stabbed to death by armed robbers on the Lagos/Ibadan expressway. General Eruah was attacked when he was changing a flat tyre on the long bridge near Berger bus stop between Lagos and Ogun States. On Thursday, May 4, Olaitan Oyerinde, Principal Private Secretary to Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole was murdered at his residence in Benin City. A Nigerian Civil war hero, General Mamman Shuwa Musa was shot dead on Friday, November 2 at his Gwage residence, opposite Customs area of Maiduguri an hour before the Friday Juma’at prayers. Suspicion fell on the Islamic sect, Boko Haram but the group denied involvement in the killing of the civil war hero.

At last, embattled domestic operator, Dana Air, will commence its scheduled domestic operations today with a Lagos-Abuja service.

The airline went off the skies on June 3, 2012, when the aviation mmmministry via the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) suspended its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) following the crash of one of its MD 83 jets in Iju Ishaga area of Lagos that killed 163 people and destroyed property worth billions of naira.

Since then, the airline had battled for its return into operation and on December 5, 2012, the NCAA issued new AOC to the airline after it satisfactorily scaled the safety audit.

But the regulatory agency, NCAA, told the airline management in clear terms that it would not be allowed to fly until it begins to pay the outstanding 70 per cent of the $100,000 to families of victims of the crash as stipulated by law.

Having also showed sufficient evidence of this, the NCAA gave the airline the all clear nod to commence scheduled operations.

Reacting to the resumption of flights, the spokesman of Dana Group, Tony Usidamen, extolled the NCAA for its support, adding that the airline would begin with a Lagos-Abuja-Lagos flight today, after which it would gradually introduce other routes it hitherto flew to.
