Nairaland / General / Portable Generators: Standby Power Or Standby Death? - See More At: Http://www.v by mutw(m): 2:32pm On Oct 09, 2013
Who monitors incidents of unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in Nigeria? A review of medical records of patients receiving diagnosis of unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning shows Nigeria is in dire need of active surveillance for proper generator use. VF findings show that misplacement of portable, gasoline-powered generators, for instance, indoors, in garages, or outdoors near windows, is often responsible for fatal and non-fatal generator fumes exposures.
Public health practitioners are yet to come up with educational campaigns on the safe operation of portable generators and prevention of hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning in the community. Sola Ogundipe report…
RECENTLY, a new-wed couple choked to death from generator fumes in their new home on the outskirt of Calabar, Cross River State. Around the same time, in Ibadan, Oyo State, a 69-year-old man passed away along with seven other members of his family after they were overcome by fumes from a portable generator that was running on the first floor of their home. Reports indicated that the level of fumes inside the home was three times the danger limit.
Prior to this incident, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, two teenagers died from generator fumes poisoning because the generator they were using to power ceiling fans was too close to the room in which they slept. Much later, in Agege area of Lagos State, a middle aged man who was running a generator in his basement died in his sleep when the generator fumes infiltrated his bedroom.
Separate incidents
In yet another incidence somewhere on the Lagos mainland, a 30-year-old man who went to bed with his family while a generator was running in his garage, also died along with them as a result of the close proximity of the device. In Abuja, between June 2012 and March 2013, four people died in separate incidents as a result of poisoning from generator fumes.
Almost daily, there is one report or the other of a generator-induced death. Someone is either burned to death while refueling a generator, or electrocuted connecting an appliance to a live generator. But by far the most common reports have to do with people inhaling generator fumes and choking to death in their sleep right inside their bedrooms.
Over the years, the monumental failure of the antiquated National Electric Power Authority, NEPA, and its equally moribund descendant – the Power Holding Corporation of Nigeria, PHCN, Plc. compelled the average Nigerian to invest in portable generators to provide electrical power more on a substantive rather than standby basis. For millions who have come to learn never to expect power at all, the generator is a life-saver because it has become the mainstay of electricity provision. For most purposes, the standby generator has become the “NEPA”, while the “NEPA” is now standby.
It is on record that Nigerians have acquired more standby generators in their life time than other nationals in the world. Owning a portable gasoline generator in Nigeria today is not only essential, but the norm. Recent statistics from the Centre for Management Development reveal that an estimated 60 million Nigerians invest about N1.6 trillion to purchase and maintain standby generators annually.
The typical portable generator ranges from the cheap and lowly “I beta pass my neighbour” to the high end noiseless series. To most Nigerians, “I beta pass my neighbour” is a life saver. Affordable and cheap to maintain, there are very few homes in the city, town and even village where the robust little contraption has not found a place.
But those who know better describe it as a potential life taker. Being a 2-stroke design, “I beta pass my neighbour” has no separate lubrication system, so it uses a petrol-engine oil mixture
Findings by VF reveal that in a typical “face-me-I-face-you” apartment building in Lagos, there is one or even two “I beta pass my neighbour” per room. In a building with 20 rooms, up to 10-15 generators could be on at the same time, emitting thick clouds of environmentally unfriendly gases for hours on end.
Standby generators
But that is not the end of the story. Nigerians are not only world champions for acquiring the highest number of standby generators, the nation holds the gold medal for recording the highest number of generator-induced deaths.
Generator fumes comprise a lethal cocktail of poisonous and environmentally unfriendly gases, including carbon monoxide and other noxious products produced from incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels notably petrol (gasoline), diesel or a mixture of petrol and engine oil.
By far the most toxic of these product gases is carbon monoxide which is virtually invisible. You cannot smell it or see it because it is odourless and colourless and becomes fatal with sustained concentrations. VF gathered the carbon monoxide produced during operation of a portable generator can be a serious health hazard. For instance, the exhaust produced by a typical 5.5 kW generator contains as much carbon monoxide as that of six idling cars. When used indoors or in close proximity to residential dwellings, this exhaust can quickly infiltrate living spaces and incapacitate occupants. Misplacement of portable generators indoors, in garages, or outdoors near windows accounted for most exposures.
In normal use, majority of portable generators placed outdoors are reportedly located near windows or window-mounted air conditioners. More often than not, portable generators are placed inside a room or the corridor/balcony inside the home or garage to protect the devices from the weather or to prevent them from being stolen. Findings reveal that majority of fatal poisonings occur overnight.
Health records provide evidence that constant exposure to emissions from generators has proved hazardous to human wellbeing affecting the lungs and causing lasting health problems such as cancer, premature birth, low weight babies and neonatal abnormalities, cerebral palsy, etc., as well as numerous deaths.
“It is a silent epidemic. Nobody hears anything, nobody feels anything. It just happens,” notes Professor Olu Akinyanju, a member of the World Health Organisation, WHO, Advisory Panel of the Human Genetics Programme. Akinyanju, a Physician/ Haematologist, and Founder/ Chairman, Sickle Cell Foundation of Nigeria, described the incidence as an epidemic. “It is so rampant, and the challenge is how to bring it to the attention of people,” he stated.
The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention advises using generators at least 20 feet away from homes, since there’s not enough ventilation within garages and basements or near open windows to prevent fatal poisoning. However, some generator manufacturers recommend the use of extension cords to be “as short as possible, preferably less than 15 feet long, to prevent voltage drop and possible overheating of wires.” However, the use of short extension cords may result in placement of the generator too close to the home to reduce the likelihood of the entry of carbon monoxide. To reduce fumes entry, the generator should ideally be positioned outside of airflow recirculation region near the open windows.
“The bottom line is that the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning from generators is a major concern and public health officials should take cognisance of this fact. The only safe use of generators is outdoors, well away from any windows that could transmit fumes indoors,” an engineer told VF.

You Are Desperate And Lack Media Literacy, Ribadu Fires Back At Abati
Posted by: Channels Television Posted date: June 10, 2013 In: Current, Local | comment : 2 Comments and 0 Reactions
A former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu has described the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reuben Abati as a desperate personality, a fraud and someone who lacks ‘the simplest level of media literacy.’

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Goodluck Jonathan, Reuben Abati
Reacting to a statement credited to Mr Abati, in which the presidential spokesman referred to his views at a lecture in Kaduna last weekend as hypocritical and self-serving, Mr Ribadu accused the presidential aide of standing on “crooked crutches of rehashed falsehoods fabricated by corrupt politicians.”

Mr Ribadu, at a lecture in Kaduna on Saturday, was said to have declared that Nigeria is a “sinking ship” under President Jonathan with the yearnings of the masses being neglected by a tyrannical leadership.

Mr Abati had on Monday released a statement where he faulted Mr Ribadu’s views describing them as hypocritical and self-serving.

Read Mr Ribadu’s statement below:

Reuben Abati’s statement, typical of his increasingly desperate personality, has exposed him as a fraud of a presidential spokesman who does not have the simplest level of media literacy.

It is unfortunate that he stands on crooked crutches of rehashed falsehoods fabricated by corrupt politicians prosecuted by Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, in his desperate attempt to hold on to his job.

His conjectured statement is a sad commentary on the type of people we have in the helms of our affairs: even with the resources at his disposal, Abati could not conduct a little research to save himself from embarrassment before he set out barking.

It is a huge gaffe for Abati to charge Ribadu of ingratitude as the latter has more valid stand to make similar accusation having been betrayed after his selfless service to the nation in the Petroleum Revenue Task Force committee. The question of who is ethically challenged, however, is left for Nigerians to answer.

Baga Killings: Soldiers Acted According To Their Training- Security Expert
Posted by: Channels Television Posted date: April 24, 2013 In: Headlines, Sunrise Daily | comment : 3
A strategic security consultant, Max Gbanite today absolved the military of blame in the deaths that occurred in Baga Town in the northeastern state of Borno, a hub of the Boko Haram operations.

Gbanite said citizens of the razed town had complained to the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF), comprising of soldiers from Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon, of the influx and storage of sophisticated weapons in the town.

Acting on the complaints, the soldiers embarked on a fact finding mission in the town when they “ambushed” by the insurgents

Gbanite, who spoke as an analyst on Channels Television’s flagship breakfast show Sunrise Daily, said “The people of Baga , who are peace loving, complained to the Multi-National Joint Task Force about ammunition storage(s), RPGs in their neighbourhood and various forms of mortar and grenades and the MNJTF went in to investigate and find out what is happening and they were ambushed from different angles of the town by these insurgents”.

Gbanite, speaking further said “The training of a soldier…Please…… is to respond with equal kinetic power. And you cannot shoot a human being and hide behind a child or a mosque and not expect collateral damage”.

He also admonished media outfits to work with figures released by the federal government and the army authorities instead of reporting conflicting figures.

He blamed the insurgency on the lack of constituency projects in the area and sympathized with the representatives of the people of Baga in the National Assembly.

On the damaged homes, cars, motorcycles and other valuables as mentioned by the Senator Maina Lawan, Gbanaite believed that “It is possible that when the MNJTF responded to attacks there were incendiary incidents where these munitions were stored and there were collateral explosions that allowed the thatch houses to catch fire”.

He likened the deaths that occurred in Baga to deaths of refugees whose camp was used to bring down American fighter jets by Iraqi soldiers. He said the Americans retaliated and “innocent refugees lost their lives”.

Haruna Tsokwa became the Speaker for the Taraba State House of Assembly following the impeachment of the former Speaker, Istifanus Haruna Gbana on Monday. In this interview, Tsokwa speaks on his plan as Speaker and refutes insinuations that members of the House are ‘errand boys’ of the executive arm of government, amongst others. Excerpts:
What do you have to tell the people of Taraba State?
First of all, I want to thank the Almighty God for the opportunity given to me to serve at that capacity. What I have for the good people of Taraba State is that I’m a peace lover and I want to call on them to embrace peace and we are going to make laws that have direct bearing on the people of Taraba. We are going to make laws that will foster development of people of the state. So, I want to call on all the people of Taraba to as a matter of fact love one another for the development of the state.
How optimistic are you that the present leadership of the House will bring to rest the wrangling in the State Assembly?
I want to assure that the new leadership is made up of people of high integrity; they are experienced people and will do our best to ensure that we carry everybody along.
Being a first timer and saddled with this kind of responsibility, how effective do you think you would be in actualising the aspirations of the members?
Well, I have been in the House of Assembly for two years now, so the issue of first timer should not be overemphasised. It’s not constitutional, if you are elected a member, you can be a Speaker provided the other members you are working with agree, you can be elected. That was what exactly happened.
Did you in your wildest imagination ever think of becoming a Speaker of the House?
Well, as a believer and a Christian, I believe in destiny. When I was elected as a member of the House, I knew the responsibility that God gave me so for that, I am fully aware that anything can happen and God has made it possible in my life to become a Speaker.
What effort are you going to make to erase the belief that members of the state Assembly are errand boys of the executive arm of government?
Honestly, I am hearing this for the first time and with the calibre of people we have, nobody would make mistake of making such statement because, if you take a look at it, all the members are experienced people; they have been in the civil service, they are into business and I believe what we are doing here is one of the best. I think anybody that has this kind of idea is a making a wrong insinuation.
One of the critical allegations made against the former Speaker bordered on the monthly finance analysis of the House, how do you intend to handle such issues?
We have a Standing Rule which guides the business of the House, so it is expected that on monthly basis, the leadership should meet and decide on what we have. I want to assure that my leadership will go strictly by the Standing Rule.
It is being insinuated that your coming on board was sponsored by some group of individuals to facilitate the confirmation of the acting governor as the substantive governor of Taraba State, how would you react to this?
This is not true because as the governor, he is doing virtually everything that a governor should do. With the calibre of people we have around, I want to tell you that we have every reason to decide for ourselves, not that somebody would be outside and dictate to us or tell us what to do. What we did in the House was solely the way we wanted it to be. That was exactly what happened.
What would be the focus of this present leadership of the House?
Actually, what we do in the House of Assembly is to make laws that have direct bearing on the people of the state so our focus definitely will be on that aspect, to make laws that are relevant and have direct bearing on people of Taraba State.
From an accountant to a lawmaker, how have you been able to balance the gap?
Honestly, it is not easy but I want to tell you I’m part of the game. I have been into the system and we have run the system for quite sometimes. I have been moving with politicians for sometimes before now that has given me a good ground.
What mechanism do you intend to put in place to ensure a united House of Assembly?
Transparency, I am going to operate an open door policy and that will help in bringing the House together. That is what we are lacking.
What will be the relationship of the House with the executive arm of government?
The relationship between the House of Assembly and the executive is that, we legislate, we move together and co-operate to make things work the way it is expected. So I think we will continue to do that.

How soldiers sacked Baga’

Baga town which sits on the shores of the Lake Chad and famous for its smoked fish market lay waste at the weekend, caught in the vortex of the latest fighting between the JTF and the Boko Haram sect.
Witnesses say the town came under siege Friday which left in its wake deaths and destruction of a monumental scale.
Accounts of the incident varied widely, depending on who is narrating it – the JTF or residents. Nothing is heard yet from the other side in the conflict, the Boko Haram sect.
Residents alleged the town was sacked by angry soldiers in ‘retaliation’ for the killing of a soldier, reportedly by suspected members of the sect.
But the JTF denied the allegation, saying instead that security forces came under attack when soldiers went into a section of the town to conduct an operation and they responded in self defence.
Sources said news of the violence was virtually suppressed until Sunday when Governor Kashim Shettima visited.
The governor heard from distraught residents that over 185 people had been killed and over 2,000 houses and business outlets worth millions of naira destroyed in the mayhem.
Usman Doron Baga, a fisherman who spoke to our correspondent by phone said, “There is serious humanitarian crisis here because dead bodies are still in the bush and there is apparent shortage of food for survivors. There is no medication for the injured and no effective plan to resettle the displaced.”
Usman said on the day of the attack, “it was like the end of the world for us…it was fire everywhere because houses were set ablaze. I swear to God, I saw soldiers setting houses ablaze and shooting everyone they saw.
“Many of us escaped by the whiskers but many were not all that lucky, especially women and children who ran into the bush with gunshot injuries. Many died because of excessive bleeding.”
He also said the elderly and little children who could not flee died in their thatched huts that were engulfed by ravaging flames.
Baga is also famous in food and vegetable production because over 90 percent of the people engaged in all year round farming and fishing.
“All is gone now,” another resident, who is close to Usman but does not want his name mentioned, said.
“We have joined the comity of the disenfranchised…our wealth is gone, our people massacred and our merchandise burnt. In fact we have little hope for a prosperous future again,” he said.
He said the clash and the destruction of lives and property in the town is said to have been triggered by a purported letter to the JTF by the Boko Haram sect, announcing that they will confront and chase the military out of Baga and environs.
According to him, “the threat letter was deemed to be provocative by the military. It equally sent jitters to us because some soldiers threatened that if we allow anything funny to happen here, we (the locals) would pay the price,” he said.
“And indeed we have paid the price with our blood, wealth and personal effects,” he said, pointing out that even animals were not spared by ravaging flames that burnt virtually everything in Baga town.
Top government officials told our correspondent by phone that Governor Kashim Shettima, cried profusely on witnessing the shocking scene in Baga.
“The governor broke down into tears when he saw the homeless, the poor and distraught people…he was left with no option but to cry,” the source said.
Brigadier General Austin Edokpaye, who is the commander of the multinational force, reportedly told the governor that the violence in Baga should be blamed on Boko Haram, who according to him, opened fire on soldiers and used civilians as human shield.
He pointed out that his men were on Friday night attacked by members of Boko Haram.
“We lost an officer during the attack on our men on patrol. We had received an intelligence report that some suspected Boko Haram members usually pray and hide arms at a particular mosque in the town. It was around that mosque that our men were attacked, with several of them injured, and an officer died.
“When we reinforced and returned to the scene, the terrorists came out with heavy firepower, including RPGs, which usually has a conflagration effect that caused houses with thatched roofs or fencing to go on fire,” he said.
“I really have reservations over what the military said,” a legal practitioner in Maiduguri, who does not want to be named, said.
“And even if what the military said is true, is that enough reason for the soldiers to throw away the baby with the bath water? I mean, is that enough reason for the JTF to kill the villagers because they wanted to snip out the Boko assailants?” he asked.
He assured that the Nigerian Bar Association in Borno State will file a petition at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). “Holocaust is taking place right here in Borno State and the Federal Government is not perturbed,” he alleged.
According to him, “If nothing urgent is done, I can assure you that in the next couple of month, there would be nobody in Borno Stare except soldiers and Boko Haram fighters…already, the northern part of the state have been completely subdued,” he said.
It was gathered that Governor Shettima, together with other government functionaries have also visited the General Hospital, Baga, where he commiserated with the victims of the carnage, who are now receiving treatment at the hospital.
He also directed that those in the hospital with severe cases of burns be transferred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for better treatment.
The governor has also appointed a committee, chaired by Isa Lawan Kangarwa, a House of Representative member from the area, to assess the level of the damage with a view to rescuing the people.
Locals believe that unless something urgent is done, there is the likelihood of outbreak of diseases as result of decomposing bodies of humans and animals in the bushes. They also point out to the haphazard nature of rescue initiative, and absence of camps and sanitation facilities for the displaced.
Baga which had all along escaped violence in Borno State have now become part of an inglorious history of the ongoing fight between security forces and the Boko Haram insurgents that have claimed the lives of thousands of people in the last four years.

Phones / MNP: All To Know About The Mobile Number Portability In Nigeria by mutw(m): 11:02am On Apr 23, 2013
Mobile number portability MNP is a system that allows mobile telephone users to retain their mobile telephone numbers when changing from one mobile network operator to another. This is a system that's
been adopted by many developed countries as far back as 14 years ago and it is simply to enable telecommunications users to retain their phone number when changing to a new network. for example, if you are on Airtel network with the line ---> 08089636227, if you decide to change to another mobile network like Glo, you won't have to worry about being out of reach or how to get your new line passed across to your contacts because the MNP, Mobile Number Portability will now enable you to switch to that new network (Glo) and still retain the same digits as your AIRTEL network. The service will be launched in Nigeria by the NCC on the 30th of April, 2013 and will firstly be available to Glo, MTN, ETISALAT and AIRTEL network subscribers while other CDMA operators will follow.

IMPORTANT Terms Used in The Process

Below are the most important terms used in the Mobile Number Portability Process. You will need to understand them as the service get launched by NCC.

1. Donor: refers to the current network you are using and wish to change from.
2. Recipient: refers to the new network you wish to change to.
3. Porting: refers to the process of changing from one Mobile network to another and still retaining the digits.

HOW IT WORKS

• Customer would visit the office of the new network of his/her choice. When you get to the office of the recipient, you will be issued MNP request form to fill.

• The new carrier will then confirm the consumer's identity and then make a porting request to the old carrier through the porting Clearinghouse.

• When consumers go to their new carrier to port a number, they should bring along an identification, which will have their correct name and address as it appears in the SIM Registration database. This will aid in making the porting process go smoothly.

• Once a valid porting request has been made, the old carrier cannot refuse to port a number.

NB: You must have a valid proof of identity with visible photograph, your SIM must be ACTIVE, you must be able to provide the serial number of your SIM card and you must have registered the active SIM card.
• You can only make a change in 90 days.

Advantages

1. The MNP has several advantages as it would increase competition among the network providers with each and everyone of them trying her best to impress and satisfy their immediate subscribers in order to maintain the numbers of the existing ones and also attract prospective customers.

2. Since subscribers now have nothing to loose regards leaving a bad network provider, Nigerians can now enjoy freedom of choice without stress.

3. Therefore, I think Nigerians should expect a better call and data service in the coming months. What's your own view about this, kindly use the comments box at the end of this post to share with us.

Phones / Nigeria Kicks Off Number Portability by mutw(m): 10:05am On Apr 23, 2013
Nigeria Kicks Off Number Portability

From Monday, 22nd April, 2013, the over 100 million mobile phone users in the country can now change from one network to another and still retain their numbers, courtesy of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) regime which takes off today.
The regime would be flagged off with a massive publicity event by the Nigeria Communications Commissions (NCC).
However, there are concerns about how mobile phone users can effectively access and enjoy the benefits of the system after the launch.
Perhaps in anticipation of this, NCC has outlined what subscribers should do to effectively utilise the benefits of the system.
Mobile Number Portability makes it possible for a subscriber to migrate from one network – may be due to poor services – to another which he/she feels can offer better services, without losing his/her original phone number.
Already, NCC and telecoms operators as well as MNP service providers, have confirmed their readiness for the scheme while there has been excitement stemming from what MNP is able and about to do.
Expectedly, the service will give the telecoms consumers the freedom of choice, redefine competition and allow subscribers the opportunity to use only one phone and operate on the platform of their choice.
The service will also impose cutting-edge responsibility on the operators who will now ensure their quality of service is good enough to retain the confidence of their subscribers.
However, the regulator has hinted the subscribers that the programme is just beginning and will not provide the ‘magic wand’ to address all the problems of the industry immediately.
NCC, at the weekend, said that technical hitches may be expected within the first few days of the service launch, but implored subscribers to show understanding. It also advised Nigerians to access its website for detailed information on MNP.
The Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Dr. Eugene Juwah, noted that subscribers were expected to abide by certain rules to give the system a smooth take off. “The following are very important: As a subscriber, you can port (change) to another operator. However, you will be restricted from porting (changing) your number to a third operator within 90 days of a previous port; you can port your number as many times as you like in a given year. This means there is a 90-day restriction before your next port”, he said.
Just like it used to happen in SIM swap at the early days of GSM in the country, subscribers may port the numbers of other people for no genuine reasons and to forestall this, Juwah said subscribers would be required to submit certain documents. “To move your number to a new mobile operator, you need to bring proof of identity such as identity card, passport or driving licence or an officially-validated photographic identity document. Also, the mobile number you wish to port must be validly registered.”
He also gave hints that subscribers can port their numbers at any customer care office, retail shop or outlet of their chosen new service provider and meet with the authorized sales person to request to port their number.
He also informed the subscribers that porting is not available by telephone, online or other electronic means.
Meanwhile, subscribers wishing to change their operators to a preferred network are expected to terminate service with their existing service provider before initiating porting with the new service provider.
In Nigeria’s model of porting, Juwah said that both post-paid and pre-paid customers will be able to port their numbers but however, added that once the porting process is complete, postpaid customers are required to settle their outstanding bills to their previous service provider including any early termination fees.
He also warned that old service providers are permitted to use any legal measures to recover any outstanding charges from a subscriber.
Meanwhile, in compliance with the directive by NCC that all mobile operators be ready for the commencement of the exercise today, almost all the mobile operators in the country have expressed readiness to fall in line with the MNP from take off.
Globacom said it was fully ready to begin the implementation of mobile number portability.
Group Operating Officer of the company, Mr Mohammed Jameel, said that “in terms of system readiness, Glo has completed the procurement and implementation of the network signal routing system (STP) and the porting process or gateway management system which is the first to be commissioned in the country and now completely ready for MNP service. The upgrade and customization of the network systems, the IT systems, the billing systems that will handle mediation and fraud management and the value added systems (VAS) have also been completed”.
Jameel added that the company‘s technical and operational teams had worked assiduously to ensure that the network is in a perfect state of preparedness to enable a smooth transition for those who are interested in porting on the Glo network.
“We put in place a functional number portability gateway (NPG) and the first to ensure an all-call query signal transport point (STP) system which are major technical requirements for the successful take-off of mobile number portability on any network”, he said.
Also, MTN Nigeria at the weekend expressed its readiness to comply with the NCC’s directive as the MNP takes off today.
MTN’s Corporate Services Executive, Akinwale Goodluck, said the company has put systems in place to make MNP a reality for mobile phone users in Nigeria who are eager to join the country’s most expansive network.
“We have made all the necessary investment in infrastructure and manpower to make MNP a reality. We are confident that at the commencement date, we will be absolutely ready. “ Goodluck added.

The Senate yesterday backed a bill that would prevent children of public officials in the country from schooling abroad. The Senate resolved that the bill be passed second time and referred to the Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu-led Senate Committee on Constitution Review. In his lead debate, the sponsor of the bill, Senator Basheer Garba Mohamme (PDP, Kano Central) explained that bill sought to amend the constitution in a manner to discourage public officials from sending their children and wards to schools abroad.

ACN denies pact with CPC for Edo guber polls

ACN Action Congress Of NigeriaCongress Of Progressive ChangeCPCEdo StateGeneral Muhammadu BuhariLouis Odion
The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Edo state has denied any planned merger or decision to present a joint candidate with the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in the forthcoming July 14 governorship election in the state.

The Edo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Louis Odion, made this known in a statement, reacting to a recent publication by a national newspaper that, there will be an alliance between Edo State branch of the ACN and CPC for the July 14 governorship polls in the state.

According to the statement, “the newspaper added that the national leader of CPC, General Muhammadu Buhari (RTD), was being expected to join the national leaders of ACN at a grand rally in Benin City on Saturday, July 7.”

The ACN debunked the report of the purported alliance between the two parties in the state ahead of the election and that General Buhari is not expected at the July 7 rally.

“It is only a figment of the writer’s imagination. Neither has invitation been sent to the CPC leader nor is he being expected at the rally” stated Mr Odion.

“Much as we are not averse to collaboration as true democrats, the truth is no such has been entered into here. It is our humble belief that the discerning Edo voters are appreciative of Comrade Oshiomhole’s sterling performance in the last forty-four months and are more than willing to not only express themselves by voting for him resoundingly on July 14 but also defend their votes” the party concluded.

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole is seeking another term in office on the platform of the ACN.

Flood digs 500 bodies from graves in Borno

Africa NewsCemeteries In NigeriaChannels TelevisionFlood In BornoFlood In NieriaFlood Washes Up Dead Bodies From GraveNigerian News
Over 500 dead bodies were washed up from their graves in Jajeri Moslem Cemetery in Maiduguri and Jere Council Area Borno state capital following a heavy downpour that started from Wednesday evening till the early hours of Thursday. A 10-year-old, who was buried two days ago, was also washed up.

Also, over 10,000 residents, were sacked from their homes while property worth millions of naira were destroyed.

The rainfall was said to be the heaviest in the state since the commencement of the rainy season.

Areas which were affected are: Bullumkutu, Ajillari, Jajeri, London Ciki, Polo, Bolori, Ummarari, Maduganari, Gomari Airport, Gwange and Mary wards of the metropolis. Most of the residents in these areas had to stay indoors. Others were seen evacuating their property and laying the items under the sun and on trees to dry.

Mallam Bukar Maina, a resident, said the affected people have planned to send an SOS to Governor Shettima to come to their aid.

Maina said: “This is not the first time we have taken our complaint to the governor on the devastating effect of flooding in the area due to our proximity to River Gadambul. But all our cries fell on deaf ears. We hope this time around the governor will listen to us.”

Meanwhile, Borno State Governor, Shettima has said the state government has awarded contracts worth N14 billion for the construction of roads and drainages in Bullumkutu, Dala, Abuja Talaka, Bullumkutu Tsalake, among other wards of the metropolis, to check flooding.

He said there was ongoing planting of over 10 million Arabic trees/seedlings across the 27 council areas of the state.
He said: “It is unfortunate that apart from some of my valuable documents and property which were destroyed, some section of my only hard-earned two bedroom bungalow was brought down by the flood. I am now totally confused as I have nowhere to go to with my family of 10.”

Computers / Microsoft Launches New Social Network by mutw(m): 8:44pm On May 22, 2012
So.cl (pronounced 'social') is an experiment in open search, according to Microsoft
ARTICLE | MAY 22, 2012 - 7:10PM | BY RICHARD ESSIEN

The past weeks have been filled with Facebook related news, from the Facebook IPO to Mark Zukerberg's marriage to a longtime girlfriend, Priscilla Chan on Saturday, however, Microsoft has quietly launched its own social network which had been in development for almost a year.

This social network, called So.cl (pronounced 'social'), which launched in beta at the end of last year, was initially targeted at students to help them connect with one another – a concept that early adopters of Facebook know well and was well played out in the movie "Social Network"

However, Microsoft says So.cl “is an experimental research project, developed by Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, focused on exploring the possibilities of social search for the purpose of learning.” So.cl is not designed to compete with Facebook.

The primary focus of So.cl is helping “people find and share interesting web pages in the way students do when they work together”, by combining social networking and search.

Anything you search for on the So.cl network is viewable by other users and made available to third party developers. It sure seems like a direct competitor with Google+, which was Google's attempt at combining search with social networking. It certainly has similarities, but So.cl is ultimately an academic tool more than a
social one.

It allows users sign up using with either their Facebook or Windows Live profile. Microsoft had little choice but to leverage on Facebook's social graph, given that hardly anyone uses Windows Live (Microsoft's ID platform).

So.cl is a cross between Google+ and Storify. When it comes to using So.cl and finding value in it, the flaws become obvious. The Storify-like aggregation feature in So.cl is nifty, but everything else has been done before in numerous other social networks: posting, commenting, tagging, liking, sharing (two options: to Facebook or email!).

In reality, what So.cl offers is a network where posts are re-shared and users optionally add their own comment or content.

A noteworthy feature in So.cl is called 'video parties'. This is basically a video playlist with a chat area -- like YouTube's playlists. It's probably the most innovative feature in So.cl, but that isn't saying a lot. The reality is that Facebook or Google+ could easily replicate it, if they wanted to.
