Web Developer don't have any body that govern all our activities in NigeriaKamsik: We don't need a governing body. What would they govern, if I may ask? Who gets jobs? How much to charge? Who is worthy of becoming a member? We don't need all that. If at all, as I have said consistently above and throughout on similar posts is a school of thought, so to speak. We meet up, say once a year or so, have presentations, learn from each other, etc. None of that "governing" nonsense. If you doubt what I say, point out to me what similar governing body out there has ended up doing any good for its members in the long-run. Don't get me wrong, there are some things that will require regulation and those usually pertain to national interest. Other than that, there is no need for a governing body of any kind. This of course would be in an ideal world so rather than total elimination, I say we need as few of them as possible. |

All in favor of moving this thread to, "philosophy and logic" board say, "Ay!" ![]() |
what exactly is in "<version>"? |
Ade: In case you don't know how, go to your desktop, right-click on "my computer" and make sure your set up is similar to these screenshots. When I last installed the JDK, I was impressed that the wizard set up the class path for me automatically. I guess this isn't the case with you. p.s. 1) I use Windows XP professional, so what you see on Vista may not the same as these screenshots (I don't use Vista) 2) Forgive my photoshop "skills" - I am not much of a designer ![]() I hope this helps.

bigtim, I must confess that this site is probably the best flash site I have ever visited. I mean, .97 seconds download time on a T1? Who can beat that? The layout is also very simple, which is all I am about. Two things I didn't like though: 1) All the text is embedded in the flash - bad for accessibility and usability 2) When going from one page to the next, I was at first confused as to why I couldn't click the "back" button to go back to where I was. It was only after a minute or 2 that it hit me that I was on a flash site and so should click "home". Then again, I know a thing or 2 about flash. What about the regular joe web surfer? The aforementioned 2 shdnt take away from the fact that considering the heavy use of flash, the site is both "thin" and simple. You know who did the site? If yes, give them a pat on the back for me ![]() |
Based on the quality of computers at some cyber cafes, I am total support of this ![]() http://odili.net/news/source/2008/feb/7/202.html |
Again, I don't think you have much control over a user's security settings. That's just the way it is. Unfortunately, only the computer-savvy users will know enough about resetting their security levels/allow the flash movie to play from the option button that shows at the top of the browser. If they aren't going to be the majority of your users, then you might want to develop an alternative to the flash movie, just in case. There might be something on google, but I doubt it. I bet there are tons of forums devoted to discussing this very topic. |
For those of you who may not know, I took the liberty to create 2 websites aimed at promoting Akwa Ibom State and her culture: 1) http://www.geocities.com/myibibio 2) http://www.akwaibomnewsonline.com Spread the news and send me your suggestions ![]() |
wow! I didn't realize there were that many pple of CRS/AKS origin on here ![]() |
of the 2, panorama in my opinion was the best. Under normal circumstances, agencynet would have ranked #1 but from a usability standpoint, I couldn't find it in my heart to give it a passing grade - after the home page, I found it difficult at first to navigate from one page to the next and it was a bit confusing with things flying around the place. The most confusing of all to me was the page with the office layout. Good skills/creativity on the part of the developer(s) though. |
I would imagine that if the user has their security settings on high, there is little you can do about that. Also, in general, I think it is also advisable to save your flash movies one version less than the latest for those who don't have the latest. Finally, I also think it is a good idea to first verify if the user's browser has flash (or the version you want to run, though this isn't good from a usability standpoint). If not, then you send them to a page that tells them they need flash to proceed. I hope these help. |
maaan kazey, see groove! You beat me to it ![]() In any event, I think there might be a very minute bug on line 1 - SELECT * FROM client WHERE status='Active' ![]() |
If you believe everything you read, MSFT might actually be increasiing its bid: http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=206105005 From an article I read yesterday or so, I blv MSFT even went as far as saying it wdnt mind borrowing money to finance the deal. So, question: What does MSFT see in YHOO that we don't? ![]() |
so, I have been thinking, In the interest of time (at least for a first pass), why not bypass the CRON altogether? You could do this on the fly in your code: Say you have the 2 timestamp fields. You do a select * on the mySQL table, then get the 2 timestamps fields. Then either do the calculation using a mySQL function (if it exists. I don't know as I have had no reason to research this) or in your PHP, then run your calculation. If the value exceeds whatever number you set, either you don't display that record or you display it with a "disabled" text or whatever in a "status" column of your HTML table. Probably not too pretty, but that could buy you time while you figure out your CRON job thingie ![]() Make sense? |
And what does this have to do with webmasters? For me to have to read this on this forum is a waste of bandwidth. ![]() |
So, you read Techcrunch alsoNot really ThePhantom - I just googled for the info and that just happened to be the first result returned ![]() |
LOL, whatz wrong with these pple! Do they really exist? They get pple pumped up yet their URLs don't work/the URLs are very suspicious and cryptic. Assuming they do get it up and running, do they expect pple to trust them given the link(s) didn't work b4? na wa o! |
To All, No offense to anyone but this issue is a perfect example as to why it isn't just enough to download/use code. One must understand it as well. Simply copying and pasting code without understanding will probably end up costing you more time and money in the long-run. Another case in point: Someone from NL YIMd me asking to help figure out why a template he downloaded wasn't working properly in Dreamweaver (DW). When I asked him to open the code in notepad, he balked and said, "I am used to coding in design view (I don't think that qualifies as coding but I digress). If I open the code in notepad, how do I add new images or text? ![]() Look, I am not saying don't get code from elsewhere. After all, even the code we get from books/online tutorials isn't ours. All I am saying is make sure you understand the code, modify it to see how it behaves, then add it to your codebase. It is the best and only way to learn. As always, my 2 cents. |
Might this be it? http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/02/06/google-expanding-africa-presence/ If true, it appears we are too late in the hiring process as this has been going on for a while ![]() Oh well. |
g_boy, For your reasons, I wouldn't agree to one. However, if done for the following reasons, I *might* b interested: 1) To serve as a place where a client knows that if they call a member, service is guaranteed. A Better Business Bureau of sorts 2) To serve as a meeting ground for learning - via workshops, inviting special guests, presentations, etc) 3) No officers whatsoever. Just a group of peers getting together, networking and learning from each other 4) No price-fixing, wage-fixing or the like. Associations, especially in the Nigerian context, are generally not a good idea. Besides, considering market women have periwinkle association (seriously), it sort of diminishes the existence of associations as a whole. Associations (which, let's face it, is a nicer name for the communistic "unions" ) have a tendency to be bureaucratic, politicized and in the end, as e-monky has said, it only ends up stifling innovation. As always, my 2 cents. |
tunde, I haven't implemented this before (but who knows, I might eventually so I might as well figure out how to now )) but this link may have all the answers you seek: http://www.thescripts.com/forum/thread614886.htmlIt mentions the mysql event scheduler. I hope this helps. |

nduaj, nice site. If I am not mistaken, the last site you posted for review was that of a law firm as well. Do I spot a trend? ![]() Having said that, here are a few pointers: 1) I like the home page. However, when you click on the menus and go to the resulting page, to me, it becomes inconsistent with the rest of the site. This may not be seen when you go from the home page (HP) to another page but when you do vice versa, it is really noticeable. 2) The black portion of the header image on "B&I people" is not the same height/width as compared to the header image o other pages, thus creating a "jumping" effect. 3) The header images look good until you get to "B&I lawyer" where I see silhouettes. Any reason for this? 4) On "contact" page, the black half of the header image is a perfect rectangle. On other pages, the left side is at an angle. Any reason for this? 5) The photo on this page http://www.banwo-ighodalo.com/akeredolu.php is aligned with the top of the first line on the page. Similar photos on other lawyer pages aren't. 6) Upload resume page: doesn't mention that fields are mandatory but when I hit submit, I get "please enter your name". It would be nice to be told this upfront. 7) Contact page: I would rather you bring up the form to the top of the page, above the fold. When most people visit a contact page, it's to use the form and not necessarily to see physical locations. You can do this by moving the physical addresses to the right column, below the left nav. Also, there doesn't seem to be any validation for the form. You want a ton of spam/blank emails? ![]() For the lawyers page, I would probably have the names on the left as you do and then on the right, the images and bio. That way, there is no page reload. In this case, you are reloading the right column (either via AJAX, Flash, plain vanilla DHTML, etc) only. Currently, even on a T1, page download time for those pages is 16 seconds each. That means if the company has 100 lawyers, I would have to wait about 27 minutes. If I am at a cybercafe and paying by the hour, is this fair to the user? Probably not a good idea. 9) Some images/movies don't seem optimized. Take http://www.banwo-ighodalo.com/banwo.php again for example. This movie: http://www.banwo-ighodalo.com/femibanwo.swf is 43KB alone. Also note that the dimensions of the actual movie aren't the same as what it is on the page. Also, as tiny as this image is: http://www.banwo-ighodalo.com/greenfade.png , it is a whopping 27KB in size. 10) Your top nav and the sitewide nav at the top are image maps. Why? Overall, the site looks good. Keep it up. The above may seem like a lot but trust me, many are just a matter of making minor adjustments. You'll be fine ![]() |
Dude, I don't see any google search toolbar. |
A2J, I wouldn't regard smith's statement as an insult. I would rather you look at it as an opportunity to learn. Maybe it's just me but I don't take things personally. It's not worth it. Most importantly though, no one is perfect including smith. So, making the statement he did says to me, "ok, really? Please talk to me with respect to how you did it. How did you do A, B, C, etc?" Why? Cos in the end, it could be that your ideas may be better than his, or vice versa. Either way, a symbiotic relationship is thus formed and you 2 in the end are the better for it. Maybe he is bringing something to the table that you aren't aware of, or vice-versa? No one knows it all. Of course, the only way for you and others to ascertain what I have said would be for smith (and this is what I have expected him to do based on a previous post either here or elsewhere) to say, "guys, this is a new portal that will redefine how you see portals. The first 5 web developers to email me will get VIP access for the next 2 days so as to test its features" or something like that. Since the site is still not launched, I would imagine smith wouldn't mind making a change or 2 if need be. In conclusion, speaking for myself, I don't deem his statement as an insult but rather as an opportunity for both parties to learn. Speaking of which, smith, how about you open the site up to a few of us on here ![]() As always, my 2 cents. |

LOL abhosts, #6 and #9 to me are the funniest. However, I wouldn't regard some of them as silly - you have to assume you are dealing with the lowest common denominator. Tell me if this would qualify as silly in your books: Abhosts has a car and takes it to the mechanic. Mechanic tells abhosts to bleed the brakes. Abhosts comes back and says, "oga, I couldn't find any veins to bleed." Would it be right for the mechanic to say that you said something silly? Your call. I always say everyone is smart but in their own regard. What is silly to you might be a very serious question for someone else ![]() |
