The President of Chad, Idriss Deby on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 dared the leader of the dreaded insurgency group under the auspices of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, to either surrender or face death.
According to Punch, Deby told a news conference in N’djamena, that he knows the whereabouts of Shekau, who, according to him, was sighted in Dikwa , a village in Borno State two days ago.
He said, “Abubakar Shekau must surrender. We know where he is. If he doesn’t give himself up he will suffer the same fate as his compatriots.
“He (Shekau) was in Dikwa two days ago. He managed to get away but we know where he is. It’s in his interests to surrender.
The troops from Chad had earlier in the week, recaptured the village from the hands of the Islamist extremists.
The troops killed more than 100 insurgents in Dikwa which is about 85 kilometres away from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.
During the encounter, the terrorists reportedly invaded a huge building where they hid themselves inside wardrobes.
Unfortunately for them, the troops were able to fish them out and fired shots which killed most of them in their hideout.
However, one of the insurgents in a defence bid, entered a bus laden with gas canisters and blew it up, killing a Chadian soldier and injuring 34.
“They came to hide here as we advanced,” one of the soldiers said, pointing to the bodies in the wardrobes.
Confirming the killings, the Chadian army spokesman, Col. Azem Bermandoa, said his men chased those who escaped about 15 kilometres out of the town, where many walls were sprayed with bullets and most houses were abandoned.

Ekiti state Governor, Ayo Fayose has released proof to back his claim that Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC wasn't interviewed in London recently.

According to VANGUARD, Fayose said, ,the picture of Buhari allegedly taken during the London interview was reportedly taken in suite 881 at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.

Six PDP members of the House of Reps have defected to APC, Labour party and Accord party. The lawmakers announced their defection at the resumed session of the house today February 17th. Three of them moved over to APC, two to Labor party while one moved over to Accord party.

“We are the ones who started the push for six months delay in the elections to enable us [to] put in place an interim government which would then enable the party to change its presidential candidate to somebody that is more competitive,” one official confessed. He added that Mr. Jonathan’s faction also sought the extension for their own designs, which was to explore ways of rigging the elections.

SaharaReporters has learned of a new twist in the desire of some top officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for a six-month postponement of polls in Nigeria, with several sources saying a faction of the party would work to replace President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate.

In separate interviews with SaharaReporters, numerous PDP officials disclosed that many founding members of the party had lost confidence in Mr. Jonathan’s viability as a candidate, adding that a faction within the party had discussed easing the incumbent president out of the presidential race, and replacing him with another candidate from the Niger Delta zone.

“The only obstacle to the plan is that the South-South might kick against it, so we have arrived at a consensus to find another candidate,” one of our sources, a northerner, said.

“If elections could be postponed for six months, we will definitely replace President Jonathan as our candidate,” another member of the faction confirmed.

In a clear sign that the party was crumbling was within, several high ranking PDP members said they regretted letting President Jonathan carry the party’s flag as a presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections. Some of them confessed to being aware that the party’s prospects looked dire with Mr. Jonathan holding the presidential ticket.

Our interviews revealed that many PDP governorship candidates in the north and elsewhere in the country were secretly working against Mr. Jonathan’s re-election or quietly distancing themselves from him.

One party leader revealed that some candidates in the northern area were all but campaigning for Mr. Buhari, the presidential flag bearer of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, some PDP officials told SaharaReporters that, while they hoped that President Jonathan could be sidelined to increase the chances of the party in the upcoming elections, they also wished that the APC would also dump Mr. Buhari as its presidential candidate.

The party officials claimed that key political figures across Nigeria continue to view a Buhari Presidency with mortal fear because of his stubborn personality and his promise to punish the corrupt.

Several of the PDP officials told SaharaReporters that the rift between Mr. Jonathan and a large faction in the party that wants him dumped was reflected in the responses to former President Olusegun Obasanjo who two days ago dramatically announced his resignation from the PDP, publicly tearing his membership card. Two of the officials disclosed that, while Mr. Jonathan’s aides launched direct attacks on Mr. Obasanjo, the officials at the party headquarters in Abuja adopted a more cautious and subdued tone, regretting that the former president had decided to leave the party.

Some officials stated that the party hierarchy viewed Mr. Obasanjo’s public departure from the party as a dangerous signal and as a major threat. “Chief Obasanjo doesn’t just come out swinging the way he has done recently unless he is privy to the existence of some third forces that are against President Jonathan. And to the best of our knowledge, the former president has never fought a battle like this and lost, no matter how long it takes him,” one of the officials said.

“The truth is that many senators, honorable members of the House of Reps and governors are loyal to Baba, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. So they are doing Baba’s bidding even though they are giving Mr. President [Jonathan] the impression that they are with him,” another party official in Abuja said.

The party officials acknowledged that the statements of former President Obasanjo in the last three days had caused a major havoc on the party’s plans to work towards an interim national government.

Several of the PDP officials attributed the fractiousness within the party to the way Mr. Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan, imposed unpopular candidates on the party in various parts of the country. Even though they agreed that Mr. Obasanjo had imposed candidates on the party in the past, one PDP official said the Jonathans consistently backed candidates who were extremely unpopular within the PDP and unelectable.

Asked if President Jonathan was aware of plans to replace him, some of our sources said the president knew that many powerful members of the party were not satisfied with his style and low performance. One source said former Vice President Alex Ekwueme and even the party’s chairman of the board of trustees, Tony Anenih, were far from enthusiastic about Mr. Jonathan’s re-election.

“President Jonathan’s candidature and unpopularity are damaging the party,” one official stated. He added that the party’s electoral prospects in the general elections had dwindled dramatically. “We are only sure of carrying about 11 states in the country, according to our internal polls,” one party official disclosed.

Party officials also said they were determined to change numerous candidates for governorships, the Senate and House of Representatives in several states if the six-month postponement ever became a reality. “The way President Jonathan and First Lady Patience Jonathan picked many candidates has now weakened the party across the country,” one top official in Abuja complained.

Nigerian currency as at yesterday, February 15, is selling at N204 to the Dollar.

At the black market, the Naira-Dollar exchange rate is
said to be as high as N209.

The Pound Sterling on the other hand is selling for 314 to the Naira at the Bureau De Change segment and N310 at the black market.

The fall of the Naira continues despite attempts made by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stem the trend.

According to Bloomberg, the Naira has tumbled 17

Many couples think of their wedding day as the start of a new life together but 10 newlyweds in Thailand today chose to take the idea more seriously than most when they lay in a coffin as they said their vows.

According to BangkokPost, the wedding ritual, conducted by monks, allows couples to rid themselves of bad luck by being 'brought back to life' and is believed to bring true love, prosperity, and protection from harm.

Participants made offerings to the monks before taking their places side-by-side in the large pink
coffin - floral bouquets held to their chests. The monks then draped a large white sheet across them - representing their death - and performed chants usually reserved for funerals. The prayers ended with blessings for a new life.

A Nigerian woman, Mrs. Deola Ogunfoworin, and her daughter, Ronke, are presently languishing at an Indian hospital after the family ran out of funds to treat the ailment for which Deola was flown abroad.

PUNCH Metro learnt that 53-year-old Deola, who was diagnosed of diabetes in 1994, and hypertension in 2009, had been flown to the Asian country on October 7, 2014, to undergo a kidney transplant. Deola was accompanied to India by 32-year-old Ronke.

It was learnt that when the woman started the treatment at the Indian hospital, an initial surgery done on her neck, gulped more than N3m, leaving the family helpless to carry on with the rest of the
treatment.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the husband, Feyi Ogunfoworin, said:

“When my wife was referred to India in September last year, we rallied round for support and were able to raise more than N3m, hoping to spend it on the kidney transplant. Unfortunately when they arrived in the country, the hospital discovered a tumor, which needed to be operated, in her neck. The N3m went into the surgery.
The actual transplant she went for has yet to be carried out. We have exhausted all our resources. Officials at the Indian hospital are hoping to ensure they start the transplant promptly, but we are at the end of the rope. Presently, Deola and Ronke are stranded in India as a result of our inability to pay the bills for my wife’s treatment.”
Punch was told that Deola, as a result of ongoing treatment, could not speak on the telephone from the hospital bed.

In a report on Deola’s health by the Columbia Asia Hospital, signed by an official, Dr. Girish Namaghondlu, a consultant Nephrologist, the hospital confirmed that the woman was the hospital’s patient, adding that her treatment was being delayed due to “significant financial problems.” He said:
“She was presented to us from Nigeria seeking a transplant for end stage kidney disease on haemodialysis with background history of long standing diabetes and hypertension.
Due to the above named problems, she has had prolonged stay at the hospital, and has been deemed unsuitable to receive a kidney transplant, and hence needs regular ongoing maintenance haemodialysis three times a week.
I gather that there have been significant financial problems in continuing her treatment and her family is seeking financial aid in Nigeria. I strongly support this on humanitarian grounds.”
In a medical report signed by one Dr. O.A. Kayode of the Kidney Clinics Nigeria Limited, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Deola was referred to the Columbia Asia Hospital, Bangalore, India, for renal transplantation on September 25, 2014.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega has threatened to rather resign his appointment than postpone the scheduled February general elections. He said nobody’s demand, including that of the National Council of States (NCS), or any other institution, will make INEC to postpone the February general elections as scheduled. The source further said that Jega confided in them that he will appeal even a court order on this issue, and that only a Supreme Court order will make him shift ground.

A highly reliable source close to the INEC Chairman who pleaded anonymity told Universal Reporters that Prof. Jega told a group of close friends to which he belongs this morning that he would would rather resign his appointment and save his personal and professional integrity as an academic than be humiliated by the act of postponing the elections. The INEC Chairman was said to have dropped this hint against the backdrop of stories making rounds in the media that the NCS may advise against holding the February election, using the inexcusable excuse of poor distribution of PVCs. He said in spite of all the efforts put by his commission and with over 80% of PVCs made available, it will be dishonest for anybody to use this exercise to call for the postponement of the elections.Our source said Jega told them that if postponement is forced on the commission, then the only honourable option open to him is to resign.

The source concluded by saying that it is Jega’s view both as a professor of Political Science and his experience as INEC’s Chairman that any postponement of the election would cause more harm to the country than good.

The issue of postponing the February elections has been making waves for sometime now, and it took a new dimension when the National Security Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Mr. Sambo Dasuki, joined the fray in London last week.

The National Universities Commission ( NUC) has abolished the award of Pass Degree in Nigerian Universities with effect from the 2013/ 2014 academic session.

This decision was made known by the Vice Chancellor of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru during the school's 2014/2015 matriculation ceremony which held yesterday February 4th in Sokoto.


According to Prof Zuru, the grading system of students in the universities has changed.
“What this means is that the minimum pass mark for courses in the universities will now be 45 per cent, that is, D-grade instead of the previous 40 per cent which was E-grade while the minimum class of grade to be earned by the students will be now be Third Class,” he said

We came across, in one of the national dailies, an advertorial placed by the supporters of the ruling party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and we couldn’t help but wonder.

The ad asked Nigerians to “be afraid and vote for Goodluck Jonathan”.
