Health / Breaking-unaids Confirms Rapid Increase Of Hiv/aids Infections In Uganda by Naijabams(m): 9:13am On Nov 19, 2016
Ms Amakobe Sunde, the UNAIDS country Director has confirmed the rapid increase of HIV/AIDs infections in Uganda. According Uganda Crazy Medias, she said that Uganda is losing the fight against HIV/AIDS after the latest report of 227 new infections among adolescents, 570 new infections among girls between the ages of 15-24 years and 83, 000 new cases annually.
Speaking at a meeting on Tuesday with some committee members striving so hard to restore Uganda’s pedigree as a leader in the fight against the deadly infections, Amakobe discredited the new numbers of infections.
‘I am in total disbelieve over the numbers of new infections, especially of young adolescent girls in Uganda. For a country that was hosting delegates to come and bench mark on how to tackle HIV/AIDS, your success is being tainted because of these new infections.’

Education / ASUU Calls For The Removal Of Education Minister by Naijabams(m): 5:22pm On Nov 17, 2016
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has called for the sack of the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu over what it described as his insensitivity and lack of commitment towards reversing the dwindling fortunes of the Nigerian education sector.

This call was made by the Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA), Dr Ndamisa Mohammed Attaahiru.

According to him, the ongoing strike would have been averted if the Minster has been alive to his responsibilities.

He mentioned that since the current administration came on board, that ASUU has been trying to get access to Mr. President however the minster has not allowed such to be possible.

“He should be removed because you cannot stay in a place you are not doing your job. If he was very sensitive to the issues today, I don’t think this strike will have been called for. If his removal will bring prosperity to education because Nigeria is bigger than an individual in this country, we must move forward. If a minister is sitting down on his seat and sabotaging the efforts of education, I think he should be removed. He doesn’t need to be there”.

He equally confirmed that FUTMINNA has joined the strike and has withdrawn all academic services.

“If nothing is done after one week, we will reevaluate the situation on ground and move to the next option which is two weeks. If after two weeks nothing is done we will look at the situation and move to three weeks. If after three weeks nothing is done, we will go on full blown strike.” He stated emphatically.

Politics / Avengers Hail Niger Delta Leaders’ Meeting With President Buhari by Naijabams(m): 7:34am On Nov 06, 2016
Niger Delta Militants Group has expressed satisfaction at the development, but requested the immediate reopening of the Maritime University at Okerenkoko

NDA, however, described all the demands as the minimum in the face of what the region actually needed, having been neglected and ravished for donkey years.

“Some issues need affirmative actions. The immediate take-off of academic activities at the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU) Okerenkoko, for the 2016/17 sessions, withdrawal of all occupational security agencies and agents in the Niger Delta,” the group stated.

Admonishing President Buhari to seek good managers, the group declared that Buhari needed people of the region more than they needed him.

“The Nigerian state genuinely needs the cooperation of our people to sustain the flow of crude oil and gas in our land to quench her appetite of developing other sections of the country without regards to the Niger Delta, the people and the environment,” it averred.

Spokesperson on NDA, Mudoch Agbinibo, in a statement posted in the group’s website on Saturday, praised the Chief Edwin Clark-led PANDEF for the minimal demands.

According to the statement, the demands, if well implemented, will usher in peace and tranquility in the region.

“The Niger Delta leaders, under the leadership of Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, deserves kudos by Nigerians for presenting such minimal demands to the Federal Government to pacify a people and region that has been continuously raped and dehumanised since 1914, because the golden egg she lays is the common wealth of the nation.

“The demands are the minimal legitimate roadmap to setting up the framework to achieving the short, medium and long objective for the restoration of tranquillity and development of the region.

“These demands will lead the roadmap to engender desired peaceful atmosphere that Nigerian state so need if there is sincerity.

“Since the day crude oil and gas resources was discovered for the past 60 years, we are only asking for portable water, electricity, affordable healthcare, quality education etc; until 1994, when our people were visited by state sponsored military terror by the regime of General Sani Abacha, a regime President Muhammadu Buhari served as one of his henchmen and chaired the Petroleum Trust Fund,” the Avengers noted.

The group added that “our Elders, Traditional Rulers and stakeholders have spoken.

“They have placed the minimal legitimate demands of the Niger Delta region before the Nigerian government.

“The prospects of regaining the trust of the people by talking down on the people or using the instruments of force by the state are gone,” it said.

Education / JAMB Withdraws 2016 Admission List Sent To Tertiary Institutions by Naijabams(m): 11:52pm On Jul 31, 2016

Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has withdrawn the list of recommended candidates for admission earlier sent to the tertiary institutions.

This, according to a statement by Dr. Fabian Benjamin (Head of Media), is to ensure that the University Senate perform its statutory responsibility of conducting the selection of candidates and refer it to JAMB for confirmation in line with the admission criteria.

The criteria include that of merit, catchment and educationally disadvantaged states as directed by the Hon Minister of Education at the policy committee meeting.

The statement further said that the earlier list was sent to help fast track the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of institutions also conduct their admission.

“Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions

Education / FG Clarifies Ban On Post-utme, Admission Procedure See Here by Naijabams(m): 8:37pm On Jul 16, 2016

The Federal Government on Saturday clarified its ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission procedures, saying it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the Senate of any University or the academic boards of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.”

The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, stated this in a statement by the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations) in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben Bem-Goong.

He said the clarification became necessary “following conflicting reports in the media over the roles of universities and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in admission under the new dispensation.”

According to him, the role of JAMB is to conduct the UTME, compile the list of candidates whose scores meet the cut-off marks (180 and above) and send same to the Universities.

The Universities, he emphasised, will shortlist the candidates using the agreed guidelines and thereafter return the shortlisted candidates to JAMB for verification of compliance to guidelines and subsequent issuance of JAMB admission letters.

“For the avoidance of doubt, any screening charges shall apply only to successful candidates who have been issued admission by the universities of their choice. All Universities and JAMB should adhere to this directive”, Adamu stated.

Education / Scrap JAMB Now! – Stakeholders Reprimand Education Minister by Naijabams(m): 8:14am On Jul 08, 2016

following the ongoing controversies generated
since Education Minister, Mallam Adamu Adamu
announced the scrapping of post-UTME tests organised
by higher institutions, stakeholders, especially
university administrators and lecturers have demanded
the complete overhaul of the Joint Admission and
Matriculation Board (JAMB). The stakeholders have also
called for the full restoration of autonomy to the
universities, arguing that the buck of the admission
process should end on the table of each university.

Deputy Director, Distance Learning Centre, University
of Ibadan, Professor Oyesoji Aremu in his reaction
described the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board
and the Federal Ministry of Education as institutions
which lack policy direction on the Nigerian education
sector.

In his words: “JAMB and the Federal Ministry of
Education seem not to understand what they exactly
want for education in Nigeria in respect of candidates
seeking admission. Within a spate of a month, JAMB has
‘foisted’ two admission policies on the country.” He
lamented that while the initial cancellation of Post-
UTME is generating controversy and still being debated,
the body came out with the latest one, Point System
Option. He pointed out that few weeks ago, JAMB
through the Minister of Education, ‘decreed’ that
money must not be charged by universities for pre-
admission exercise, while the latest development stated
that universities would charge fee for screening at the
end of the process of admission. ‘’What do we call that?
Confusion!”

Also speaking on the issue, UNILAG-ASUU Chairman, Dr
Laja Odukoya said that with the actions and policies
taken so far, the Minister of Education has deepened
the confusion he created.

He said: ‘‘Clearly the minister is merely deepening the
confusion he has created based on ill-conceived policy
and lack of courage to do what is right.” He reiterated
that the point system which he now introduced was in
use at the University of Ibadan and jettisoned by UI at
the introduction of post-UTME. He posited that the
minister by his latest policy somersault has admitted
that JAMB cannot be trusted with university admission.

He said: “The minister’s position is sadly a historical as it
ignores factors that brought about post-UTME in the
first instance. “ With the new arrangement, candidates
of miracle centres who brought their scores in WASCE,
NECO and UTME are advantaged over hard-working,
honest and diligent students. ‘’Verifiable data from
universities since the commencement of post-UTME as
proof that those admitted through Post-UTME are
academically better given the reduced drop-out rate as
a consequence of poor academic performance after
the first year in the university. ‘’The minister should
have the courage to do the right thing. JAMB has failed.
It should be scrapped. Universities should be given
their autonomy to chose their students.

Even the new
policy still allow for payment for screening.” He
continued, ‘’The minister’s directive is the illogicality of
our quasi, and feeding-bottle federalism carried to a
ridiculous extreme. Education is on the concurrent list
and private universities not extension of government
bureaucracy despite the need for uniform standards.

“Two years ago, the National Assembly had a public
hearing on scraping Post-Jamb. The weight of evidence
against JAMB made it impossible to scrapped Post-
JAMB. “The very last UTME was most embarrassing with
JAMB experiencing system failure. Affected students
were dashed 40 marks each by JAMB! What a manner
of examination body?”

2016 UTME candidates are still waiting endl

Politics / Presidency Issues Statement On Nlc’s Nationwide Strike (full Text) by Naijabams(m): 9:34am On May 18, 2016

The federal government of Nigeria has implored labour unions in the country not to go ahead with its planned strike for Wednesday, 18th May 2016.

Read Below:

OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY TO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE FEDERATION

PRESS RELEASE

PROPOSED INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION BY THE NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS

The attention of all Public Officers is drawn to the notice issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to embark on an indefinite strike from Wednesday, 18th May, 2016.

This notice is regrettably given in spite of an Order by the Industrial Court against the strike action.

Government, therefore, calls upon and advises all workers to respect the laws of the land and to desist from participating in an illegal strike action.

Government undertakes to guarantee the safety of workers and their work places, and expects that normal work will continue in the interest of the nation.

Accordingly, security agencies have been directed to ensure unimpeded access to offices, work places and markets. Acts of intimidation, harassment, including barricading of gates, locking up of offices, blocking of roads and preventing workers from carrying out their lawful duties will be met with appropriate response by the law enforcement agencies.

All workers, whether in public or private sector are further reminded of the Trade Dispute Act, 2004, which provides that ‘where any worker takes part in a strike, he shall not be entitled to any wages or remuneration for the period of the strike and any such period shall not count for the purpose of reckoning the period of continuous employment and all rights dependent on continuity of employment shall be prejudicially affected accordingly’.

Accordingly, all Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Government Agencies are hereby directed to invoke the provision of ‘no work no pay’ in respect of any staff who absents him or herself from work to join the strike action.

Attendance registers are required to be opened in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies.

Crime / Fake Police Officer Nabbed With Bags Of "Igbo" [photos] by Naijabams(m): 8:53am On Apr 28, 2016

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a fake Superintendent of Police, George Oliseh, with 10 bags of weed suspected to be cannabis (Igbo).

The suspect, who wore police uniform and had an identity card which bore the rank, was reportedly arrested on Sunday at Sagamu, Ogun State, while bringing the bags of hemp from Owo, Ondo State, in his Toyota Camry car.

He was arrested alongside one Isaac Ishicheli, who claimed to be his brother-in-law.

Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters at Eleweran in Abeokuta, paraded Oliseh along with 37 suspected armed robbers, cultists, murderers, and a fraudster

Sixty-four-year-old Oliseh said it was poverty and frustration that forced him into the illicit business, adding that he had to take care of 23 children and five wives.

He explained that he was a policeman, adding that after he was dismissed from the force, he suffered partial stroke on the left hand and leg.

He said he became a commercial driver plying Idanre and Akure. He stated that he met a hemp dealer, named Inspector Umukoro, now late, who introduced the illicit business to him.

“It was Inspector Umukoro, an Urhobo man from Delta, who introduced the business to me, and I embraced it. I was a former corporal in the police. I joined the force in 2002, but I was dismissed in 2009.

“It was frustration and poverty that forced me into the business, because I have to take care of 23 children and five wives, though two had left.”

The CP said the suspects would be made to face the consequences of their actions.
