Politics / PDP Replaces Ayu As National Chairman by Naijaland12: 3:33am On Mar 29, 2023
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed its Deputy National Chairman, Umar Damagum (North), as its acting national chairman.

Mr Damagun takes over from Iyorchia Ayu, who was barred by a Benue Court on Monday from parading himself as the party’s national chairman.

This was contained in a statement by the PDP spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, on Tuesday.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party at an emergency meeting today, Tuesday, March 28, acknowledged the Order of the Benue State High Court, dated March 27, 2023 with regards to the chairmanship position of our great party.

“After a careful consideration of the Court Order and in line with Section 45 (2) of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017), the NWC resolved that the Deputy National Chairman (North) His Excellency, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagun assumes the National Chairmanship of our great Party in acting capacity with effect from today, Tuesday, March 28, 2023.

“The NWC charges all leaders, critical stakeholders, teeming members and supporters of our great Party to remain calm and united at this critical time.”

W.I. Kpochi, a judge of the Benue High Court, Makurdi, had on Monday issued an interim injunction restraining Mr Ayu from parading himself as the party’s chairman.

He issued the order following an ex parte application brought by a member of the party in the state, Terhide Utaan.

The order came a day after Mr Ayu was suspended by his ward, Igyorov Ward, in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.

The Ward Secretary, Vangeryina Dooyum, who announced Mr Ayu’s suspension, said the national chairman worked against the success of the PDP in the ward.

He also blamed Mr Ayu for the party’s abysmal outing in the 18 March governorship and state assembly election in Benue State.

Mr Dooyum stated that close allies of the embattled national chairman worked against the PDP thus making the APC to secure victory in the elections.

Health / Sitting In Traffic For Just Two HOURS Can Lead To Brain Damage. by Naijaland12: 8:44am On Feb 01, 2023
Breathing in diesel exhaust while sitting in traffic for just a couple of hours can impair brain function and cognition, a new study shows.

[img][/img]

Traffic pollution has long been linked to memory problems but it was generally thought that long-term exposure posed the biggest risk.

Researchers in Canada have found that the damage causes measurable changes within just two hours.
Air pollution not only erodes neurological health, it also increases a person's risk of death from all causes.

In the new study published in the journal Environmental Health, researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria exposed 25 individuals aged 19 to 49 to filtered air and air contaminated with diesel exhaust in a lab at different times for 120 minutes.

During that time, subjects in the study rode on a stationary bike with light effort for about 15 minutes to increase inhalation.

All subjects underwent an MRI scan before and after each exposure to monitor brain activity at different stages.

They found that breathing in diesel exhaust decreased functional connectivity, a measure of how regions of the brain interact and communicate with each other, compared to inhaling filtered air.

Dr Chris Carlsten, a senior study author said: 'People may want to think twice the next time they’re stuck in traffic with the windows rolled down.'

'It’s important to ensure that your car’s air filter is in good working order, and if you’re walking or biking down a busy street, consider diverting to a less busy route.'

The researchers specifically zeroed in on changes to the brain’s default mode network (DMN), a set of regions in the brain more active during passive tasks than tasks demanding focused external attention.

Damage to the DMN affects several areas of the brain including the medial prefrontal cortex, the posterior cingulate cortex, the inferior parietal lobe, the lateral temporal cortex, and hippocampal formation.

Activity in the DMN spikes when we are awake and not involved in any specific mental exercise.

We might be daydreaming, recalling memories, envisioning the future, monitoring our environment, thinking about the intentions of others, and so on.

Dr Jodie Gawryluk, a psychologist at the University of Victoria and the study’s first author said: ‘We know that altered functional connectivity in the DMN has been associated with reduced cognitive performance and symptoms of depression, so it’s concerning to see traffic pollution interrupting these same networks.’

‘While more research is needed to fully understand the functional impacts of these changes, it’s possible that they may impair people’s thinking or ability to work.’

The default mode network has a variety of functions that could be hampered after hours of sitting in traffic on your commute home. The DMN is a hub for self-reflection and shows activity during rumination about who we are, our personality traits, and our feelings.

The DMN plays a role in our recollection of the past. Its functionality is crucial to our ability to retain episodic memories, or detailed accounts of events that have happened during specific moments in our lives.

The team's findings offered some glimmer of hope: the neurological effects brought on by exposure to exhaust were short-lived. Though, long-term exposure from daily commutes in traffic will greatly compound the health risks.

The study said: ‘Real-world exposures are often more persistent, particularly in regions of the world for which levels such as those we use are not uncommon.

‘It is hypothesized that chronic exposure is effectively a series of short-term exposures (only one of which our participants were exposed to) that ultimately leads to accumulated deficits through a stress on allostatic load… but whether or not this applies to pollution in the neurocognitive realm, while hypothesized, requires further study.’

The fact that exposure to diesel exhaust can damage the brain is not in and of itself a new finding. In 2008, Dutch researchers monitored 10 volunteers who were hooked up to an electroencephalograph (EEG) and exposed for 30 minutes to air in a lab polluted with diesel fumes adjusted to levels typical of a busy city street.

In that time, researchers saw that the peoples’ brains displayed a stress response, indicative of changed information processing in the brain cortex, which continued to increase even after the subjects had been removed from the fumes.

Investment / Is Initiative Q The New Bitcoin? FORBES by Naijaland12: 6:35pm On Nov 03, 2018
Is Initiative Q The New Bitcoin? FORBES

Initiative Q is not, in any way, a cryptocurrency. But it might just be the new Bitcoin.

In just four months, the 'payment system of the future' has built a network of nearly three million adopters by offering ever-decreasing sums of their future currency in exchange for an e-mail address.

Despite attracting over 100,000 new users each day, the invite-only registration process triggered instant retaliation from skeptics who dubbed the ambitious global currency a pyramid scheme.

Of course, Initiative Q is asking for no more than a few pieces of digital information most digital natives share with companies on impulse. And with companies touting far inferior privacy policies.

While it is imperative for people to question all financial decisions they're presented with, a company simply cannot exist as a pyramid scheme if there is no information - let alone money - to float up the pyramid.

The reality of the enterprise is far less controversial than cynics would have you believe. Quite simply money has no value without perceived value. It is the case with dollars, pounds and every currency in between. Similarly opportunistic companies, like Dogecoin, have gone on to create immense value against all odds and it is not impossible for Initiative Q to follow suit.

"It is not a get rich quick scheme and I think that's where people get confused," said Initiative Q founder Saar Wilf. "You have to reach critical mass if you want to create a currency and that is what we're trying to do."

Wilf, who successfully built the integrated systems for online transaction verification and fraud prevention that were later acquired by PayPal, believes Q is possible but not inevitable.

He explained: "The world needs a better payment system. We are glued to its existing infrastructure and the only other option is cryptocurrency, which I don't believe answers the real problems.

"Crypto - like all currency - has built its value based on trust but is decentralised from government. It circumvents the systems, which I think most people realise can be as bad as it can be good. We want Q to become mainstream and that's why we give it away for free to those willing to promote it."

"There is no value in anything until people adopt it, so our strategy was incredibly clear. Building trust was and will always be our biggest challenge, but we will never abuse it. Our plan is to comply with regulations but make everything far more efficient than it is now.

"We want to make all financial processes both easier and faster. We want people to be able to pay for a meal like they would an Uber. To use artificial intelligence to allow families and businesses to share accounts. To have an international currency that can be traded and shared without the ill-equipped processes that are currently in place and cost so much time and money. We want to use technology to trade smarter and more secure."

Some financial experts, however, have yet to be convinced. Mike Rymanov, CEO of Digital Securities Exchange (DSX), said: “The lure of fortune and the perceived lack of risk will undoubtedly attract many, but as it is a technology play rather than a payment network, they will ultimately be disappointed as their spam box fills up and their accounts remain empty.

"While the company behind the scheme tries to justify its existence and marketing approach by making grand overtures it's missing two key elements – an actual product and regulatory control. Before it can become a viable option for investors, Initiative Q will need to ensure it meets all governing requirements across all jurisdictions it operates in – which can, and will take years. At the moment, it’s simply too early to commit."

Rymanov is not mistaken; Initiaive Q, with an existing team of eight and no actual currency in circulation, is not the get rich quick scheme of dreams. But it is also not worth writing off.

Like any digital evolution, nothing will happen overnight. A 'Q' - which the company hopes will become as valuable as a dollar within a decade - is in the eye of the beholder. Iniative's own timeline predicts nothing, hopes for everything, yet commits to utilising the most advanced technology to bring a new global currency to fruition. The capacity to create Bitcoin, but better.

If that's not worth sharing an e-mail address, I'm not sure what is.

Locals believe that she used juju to protect her property as the thief was only able to relieve himself after surrendering himself to the police who then escorted him back to the farmer.

Sports / Former France International Has Been In Coma For 38 Years by Naijaland12: 4:36pm On Mar 28, 2018
Former France international Jean-Pierre Adams has been in coma for 38 years

Nimes, France (CNN)What present do you buy a man who has been in a coma for more than 30 years?

That's the question the family of former France international Jean-Pierre Adams, whose life was brutally turned upside down in 1982, asks itself every year on key anniversaries.
Thirty-six years ago the beefy footballer, then 34, walked into a Lyon hospital for some routine surgery to correct a troublesome knee.
By the time he left, he would never talk, walk or move any of his limbs again.
His wife Bernadette has tended to him ever since, barely missing a day's care over the last three decades.
"No one ever forgets to give Jean-Pierre presents, whether it's his birthday, Christmas or Father's Day," Bernadette told CNN.
Adams, who turns 70 on March 10, can breathe on his own, without the assistance of a machine, and has his own room, where he spends most of the day in the type of modified bed normally found in a hospital.
"We buy presents like a T-shirt or a jumper because I dress him in his bed -- he changes clothes every day," his wife explains at the family home near Nîmes, in the south of France, where Bernadette cares for Jean-Pierre.
"I'll buy things so that he can have a nice room, such as pretty sheets, or some scent. He used to wear Paco Rabanne but his favorite one stopped so now I buy Sauvage by Dior."

Family / VERY Glam Life Of Bill Gates' Daughter On Instagram by Naijaland12: 7:48pm On Jan 19, 2018
• Bill and Melinda Gates are notoriously private about their personal life
• However, their 21-year-old daughter Jennifer is a prolific Instagram user
• Ms Gates, a Stanford University student shares snaps from all over the world
• She is ranked 19th in show jumping by The United States Equestrian Federation

Jennifer bears a striking resemblance to her mother, Melinda Gates, as does her younger sister, Phoebe Adele Gates, who is 15 years old.
The family often travels together, but Jennifer is the one who shares their luxe experiences with the world.
When she is not studying or on horseback, she also makes time to travel with her boyfriend of just over one year, Nayel Nassar.

Mr Nassar, 26, is Egyptian but born and raised in Kuwait, who - like Jennifer - studied at Stanford University
Jennifer and Nayel ended 2017 by visiting Kuwait, which is where Nayel grew up.
'A magical three days in Kuwait with my favorite person,' Jennifer wrote on Instagram on December 19. 'Happy holidays everyone!'
The two posed together in Kuwait City, embracing in a field, with the city landscape off in the distance.

Politics / SUMMARY Of Buhari’s Maiden Chat by Naijaland12: 9:01pm On Dec 30, 2015
On Corruption
"Our constraint is that the accused persons have to defend themselves in court to defend themselves. So, we cannot release their names to the public until the issues are completed in court. Whatever we recover will be presented in court. "The documentation in court include bank statements and documents from Customs Service that are to be presented in court. Until then, we ask Nigerians to have patience."

ASSET DECLARATION NOT SO PUBLIC AFTER ALL, NOT FULLY MADE.
"I have declared my assets four times in the past. You have the constitutional right to go to the relevant government agency to go and seek for it.
"They were deposited at the Ministry of Justice. If Ministry of Justice cannot produce my asset declaration form, then they too should answer some questions.
"Why me alone, why not others who were governors and Ministers as well. I think I don't have to ask them to give, it is your constitutional role."

STILL ON CRUDE OIL THEFT
The problem of NNPC is the involvement of international institutions such as shipping lines and financial institutions.
We would ask for the cooperation of other countries to get monies lodged from sales of oil in different accounts and not that of the Federal Government.

People on your party are being shielded from investigation?
"I don't tolerate corruption and I did not pick anyone that will corrupt my government.
"It is the right of Nigerians to take them to court. I have not taken anybody who is facing corruption charges."

Internally Displaced Persons

"We have about two million IDPs, over 70% are women and children. Over 65% of the children are orphans.
"Some Nigerians contributed money, about 25 Billion Naira, a committee was set up to utilise the funds.
"Within the week I was sworn in, I went to Chad and Niger.
"I was impressed with the goodwill they gave Nigeria on this issue.
"The G7 has sent training teams, and have given us some military hardware.
"We are more concerned with the orphans, a chance for them not to lose the opportunity for education. Some progress is being made on the ground."

On Shiites/Military clash; why the silence?

"I was in touch with the governor of Kaduna state and the president of Iran talked to me about it.
"We have a system of investigation as a government and as the head of the federal government, I have to wait for official report before I comment.
"The Police and the SSS are doing their own role of finding out what happened.
"In any incident where lives and property were lost there is a standard way of doing things and people would be asked to come and give evidence.
"How can any group create a state within a state?
"I saw a clip in which some dissidents were virtually hitting the chest of Generals."

"I expect the Kaduna State government will bring the report on the inquiry because the crisis happened in its domain. There are all sorts of allegations. So, we just have to wait for the report."

"The President of Iran spoke to me about the situation. But, I told him that as a government we have a system we must follow. "As the head of the Federal Government, I told him I will have to wait for the official report from the Kaduna State government from their investigations.
"To be fair to the both sides, we have to wait for the report of the inquiry."

NAIRA DEVALUATION
"Personally, I don't support the devaluation of the Naira. We handed over a secured country in 1979, but by 1984, nobody knew how much Nigeria was owing.
"The situation now is aggravated by the downturn in the petroleum industry. It is now per barrel and we have debt service of about N1.5 trillion and we have commitment on the ground.
"We have to reorganize the NNPC. We have to introduce the TSA. There were 45 accounts in the NNPC alone. Ministry of Defence had about 70 accounts.
"We have got about N1.5 trillion through the TSA.
"The oil downturn is very unfortunate for this government.
"Check previous records. Over 90% were recurrent. No country can develop without capital projects. We were in very very bad shape."

Buhari: "China agreed to pay 70% of cost of railway projects between Lagos and Kaduna and Lagos and Calabar, but previous government failed to pay counterpart funding of 30%.

"You cannot get a better deal anywhere in the world.

"I can't see the National assembly paying 4.5 Billion Naira to buy cars after collecting transport allowance. I will revisit that story.
"We have to live within our means."

"I have declared four times. All of them were done in the Ministry of Justice. If those agencies have refused to release my asset declaration documents, they should be held responsible to answer questions why they are keeping those declaration.
"If there is any member of my cabinet that is found to be corrupt, I will not only sack the person, I will prosecute the person."
19.29
"By the end of the first quarter of next year, we will tell Nigerians how far we have gone on the fight against corruption. "I swore by the Holy Koran to defend the country's constitution and the law. So, we will not put any body above the law."
19.28
"I cannot make the mistake of appointing anyone with corruption.
"Whoever is found to be corrupt would not only be sacked but prosecuted."
19.28
People on your party are being shielded from investigation?
"I don't tolerate corruption and I did not pick anyone that will corrupt my government.
"It is the right of Nigerians to take them to court. I have not taken anybody who is facing corruption charges."
19.25
STILL ON CRUDE OIL THEFT
The problem of NNPC is the involvement of international institutions such as shipping lines and financial institutions.
We would ask for the cooperation of other countries to get monies lodged from sales of oil in different accounts and not that of the Federal Government.
19.21
By the end of the first quarter of next year, we will tell Nigerians how far we have gone on the fight against corruption. I swore by the Holy Koran to defend the country's constitution and the law. So, we will not put any body above the law.
19.20
Is there need to rejig the EFCC, ICPC?
Buhari: We have to be very sure of the documents we get and we have to cross check records sometimes across countries and in the EFCC.
Those who were engaged in the theft of oil were people of substance and have the wealth to hire the best of lawyers to defend them.
We need to submit fool-proof documents to succeed in prosecution.
How many people have ICPC prosecuted in the past? That is why we are being thorough now.
By the end of first quarter of next year, we would be in a position to tell Nigerians how far we have gone.
19.18
"We have to be patient and await outcome of courts decision. Government will only react through the Ministry of Justice after the courts have finished with matters before them
"We have documents showing where monies have been lodged."
19.17
"Our constraint is that the accused persons have to defend themselves in court to defend themselves. So, we cannot release their names to the public until the issues are completed in court. Whatever we recover will be presented in court. "The documentation in court include bank statements and documents from Customs Service that are to be presented in court. Until then, we ask Nigerians to have patience."
19.16
Mr. Akintemi fired the first shot. He asked the President how long the honeymoon with Nigerians would last.
He asked: How are we doing with the fight against corruption?
The President responded, saying the country was doing very well considering the circumstances.
"Thirty years ago as Head of State, we collected those we perceived to be corrupt and put them in protective custody, until they prove they were not guilty
"At present, those suspected of being corrupt are innocent until they are proven guilty
"We have documents showing Nigerian crude oil was lifted illegally and proceeds are put into personal accounts instead of Government account.
"We are in court with suspected corrupt persons and we cannot comment until the court are through.
"We can only appeal to Nigerians to be patient."

Crime / Dele Giwa’s Murder: Omeben Lied, I Gave Statements To Police Twice – Soyinka by Naijaland12: 9:00pm On Oct 29, 2015
FORMER London Bureau Chief of Newswatch Magazine, Kayode Soyinka, who was present when Dele Giwa, the co-founder of the magazine was murdered in 1986 through a letter bomb, has dismissed as lies comments by a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, Chris Omeben, that he fled after the attack and was never questioned.

Omeben said on Monday that Soyinka was a prime suspect in the murder but the Newswatch management shielded him from being quizzed by the police.

Kayode Soyinka
Kayode Soyinka
Mr. Soyinka, who is now the publisher of Africa Today magazine, told Premium Times from his London base that he was questioned twice by the police after the incident and accused Omeben of deceit.

Labeling the retired police officer as a “disgrace” to the Nigerian Police, who worked with the former military regime to cover up the crime, Soyinka said: “I gave statements not once but twice to the same Nigerian Police he represents before I eventually left Nigeria. The first one was at the hospital where I was admitted – Dele’s body was next door to me. That interrogation by a senior police officer whose name I cannot recall took place on the spot when the incident was still fresh. It was inside the hospital. Dele Olojede (publisher of defunct 234next newspaper) was beside me – he is alive, go and ask him,” he said.

“The second statement I made when the police requested to see me again. It was made at the premises of Newswatch in Oregun Road in Lagos in the presence of the eminent lawyer Chief Gani Fawehinmi. I don’t know why Omeben did not know about this and he is accusing me wrongly. The statement I made, and the ones made by Funmilayo (Dele’s wife) and Billy, I believe, is now in public domain. Chief Gani Fawehinmi must have published them in the series of books he published on this subject before he died.

“So I don’t understand why Omeben should tell Nigerians such a blatant lies. That is wickedness. He does not fear God at all. Thank God I am alive and I can respond to him. Can you imagine if I had died with Dele, Omeben and cohorts would have succeeded in putting cotton wool on the faces of Nigerians and sold a different story completely to them to exonerate those who did it,” he added.

Mr. Soyinka recalled that Halilu Akilu called Mr. Giwa’s house about three times within 24hours and spoke to Funmilayo, Dele’s wife, to know how to get to the journalist’s Ikeja home.

“On the Sunday of the bomb blast Dele had spoken to Akilu from his upstairs bedroom before coming down to have breakfast with me, to tell him that he heard he had called him on Saturday and asked why. The letter bomb was delivered to the house within 45 minutes after that early morning telephone discussion between Dele and Akilu. So who should be Omeben’s ‘principal suspect’ then? Should it be me who was bombed with Dele? Or Akilu?

“Chris Omeben, who was a Deputy Inspector-General of Police, when the letter bomb blast occurred on October 19, 1986, is a complete disgrace to the Nigeria Police Force. He claimed to be an investigator of the bomb blast. Instead of protecting me, the survivor, who escaped death by a whisker, and by the very special grace of God, he is sadly and disgracefully trying to rewrite the script to make me, as he said, his ‘principal suspect’.

“His ‘principal suspect’ should be Halilu Akilu, who called Dele’s house about three times consecutively Saturday before the Sunday bombing and spoke to Funmilayo, Dele’s wife, to ask for description of and direction to Dele’s house in Ikeja.

“Omeben, said, and I quote: ‘Soyinka knew what was coming and he left the room to hide behind the wall.’ What a blatant lie? This man, who I understand is now a pastor, has no fear of God in him at all, making such bold erroneous statement like that on an issue of such sensitivity and accusing me, an innocent man – a victim and survivor of the bomb blast. He should ask God for forgiveness!

How Dele Giwa died

“Dele and I were the only two people in the study when Dele’s son Billy delivered the letter bomb to his father. It is very important here to remember that some unidentified people, who gave it to the security man at the gate, delivered the parcel bomb to Dele’s house.

“The security man, while coming inside the compound with the parcel saw Billy (Dele’s son) on the way and gave it to him. When Billy came to the study and delivered the parcel to his father, Dele looked at it and handed it over to me. I looked at it and was able to vividly see the inscription on the padded envelope and handed it back to him. He received it back from me, moved his recycling chair back slightly to face the window on his left, he held the envelope with both hands, and tried to tear it through the top left-hand corner. He had not really opened it up, if he did it was only very slightly. And boom!! The bomb exploded!’

“A big ball of fire occurred. It was a very powerful bomb explosion! The side of the envelope facing the iron-barred window blew up that window. The side facing Dele exploded on his chest and stomach. And the force that came out from the bottom of the envelope blew up his upper legs and badly affected lower part of his body. He did not die immediately. He died in the hospital.

“Now, you see the vivid description I have just given you – 29 years after the gory incident. If I ran into the toilet or hid myself behind the wall before the bomb exploded like our Mr Omeben will like the world, and particularly Nigerians, to believe, and as he is trying hard, very hard, to label me as the suspect, how would I have been able to know all this, and give this graphic description?

“That partly was what the Oputa Panel missed when it investigated this matter because they did not see it necessary at that time to invite me to give evidence and I was not invited.

So, Mr Omeben should get it now that I did not – and I repeat I did not – run away to toilet or hid behind a wall. I sat on my own chair right in front of Dele. Only the strong mahogany L-shaped desk on which we were eating our breakfast divided us. So I was literary inches away from him. The huge desk must have mobbed the force of the blast that would have done the damage on me up.

“But the force was so powerful and so powerful enough to still lift me off my chair. The chair itself collapsed. I was thrown on the floor by the exit door. I was momentarily unconscious. But regained consciousness, flung my spectacles off my face, and staggered out of the room. Yes, I received no cut on my body, but my nightgown was spattered with blood – Dele’s blood – and I had burns on my forehead. And I smelt of burns.

“I thank God for sparing my life. I could have been killed on that day. My survival was a Biblical miracle. I told you that I held the letter bomb myself! What if I was the one that opened it? And I could easily have opened it myself. But I gave it back to Dele. That’s why I believe my survival was the work of God. My own time was not up yet.”

Politics / Tribunal Is Not Properly Constituted – Saraki by Naijaland12: 11:49am On Sep 21, 2015
Counsel to the Senate President, Daudu Joseph has said that the Code of Conduct Tribunal is not properly constituted, arguing that it must be made of the Chairman and two members.

Daudu noted that the tribunal is at present made up of the Chairman and a member.

However, the Chairman of the Tribunal, Danladi Umar maintained that the tribunal is properly constituted.

Saraki is facing a 13-count charge bordering on alleged corruption and false declaration of assets, levelled against him by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

Romance / Why Women Love A Man Who Smiles by Naijaland12: 6:02am On Sep 12, 2015
Researchers discovered that women who wanted a long-term relationship found men who smiled more attractive.
The women also rated the men more trustworthy when they smiled than when they had a neutral expression.
However, women looking for a short-term relationship did not find smiling men more appealing, the psychologists from the University of Oslo, and Senshu University in Japan said.
Men who seem more trustworthy are a more attractive option for a long-term partnership because it may involve parenting, the researchers said, but the character trait is less important for a short-term fling.
'Smiling enhanced the male attractiveness for long-term relationships but not for short-term relationships,' the researchers wrote in the journal Evolutionary Psychology.
'These results are in agreement with the idea that social and cooperative characteristics would be primarily important for long-term partners but not very much for short-term partners because long-term cooperation is necessary for parenting in the former but not in the latter.
'Women put more emphasis on social factors such as trustworthiness for the long-term relationship, where paternal investment is expected, in order to minimise the risk of losing commitment from their partner during pregnancy and parenting

'The smiling advantage for long-term partners supports our hypothesis based on the idea of evolutionary strategies in mate choice for parenting.'
For the first part of the study, 218 women were shown a series of photos of men smiling, and also with a neutral expression.
They were asked to rate the attractiveness of the men for a prospective short-term relationship (i.e. just to date), or for a prospective long-term relationship (i.e. as a possible marriage partner).

In the second part of the study, another group of 71 women were again shown a series of photos of men who were smiling or who had a neutral expression, and were asked to rate them on perceived personality traits.
While the neutral faces were perceived as more masculine, the smiling faces were perceived as more trustworthy.
Previous research from the same journal, published earlier this month, found that men really can laugh women into bed.
The University of Kansas study found that the more times a man tries to be funny and a woman laughs, the more likely she is to be interested in dating.
The reverse was not true for women who attempted humour, however.

Religion / Crane Collapses Through Mecca's Grand Mosque Leaving 87 People Dead by Naijaland12: 7:46pm On Sep 11, 2015
At least 87 people were killed and more than 180 injured when a crane crashed through the ceiling of the Grand Mosque of Mecca amid high winds and thunderstorms today.
Dramatic footage shows the moment the crane toppled in heavy rain, with another video capturing the chaos and confusion inside the building after impact.
Upsetting photos posted on social media shows the polished tiled floor of the mosque covered in rubble, bodies and pools of blood, and people fleeing the area bleeding and covered in soot.
The tragic incident in Saudi Arabia occurred shortly before the 6:30pm Friday evening prayer session - one of the busiest times of the week - causing devastation to what is the largest mosque in the world.
Hundreds of thousands of Muslims are gathering at the holy site from all over the world for the annual hajj pilgrimage set to begin later this month.

A massive project is currently under way to increase the area of the mosque by 4.3million sq ft - so that it can accommodate up to 2.2 million people at once.
Pictures taken before today's disaster show the fatal crane being struck by a bolt of lightning and authorities are in little doubt that extreme weather was to blame.
Earlier, the Civil Defense had issued thunderstorm, heavy rain and wind warnings in the area. Authorities say search and rescue teams and medical workers from the Saudi Red Crescent are now working at the scene.
