Travel / Safe Ways For Using Your Mobile Phone While Driving by Naijautonews: 10:20am On Jun 05, 2019
Despite warnings against the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving, it still prevails. See less dangerous ways of using your phone behind the steering!
There is no sugar-coating the dangers of driving with your mobile phone in use. This article does not in anyway condone using your phone while behind the steering wheels. Naijauto is an advocate of safe driving.

Driving is one activity that requires maximum and uninterrupted concentration. Anything short of this puts the life of the driver and that of other road users at risk.

With the rising popularity of mobile phones came a rise in the number of road crashes. According to analysts, 23% of road crashes every year are caused by mobile phone distractions. Despite the many campaigns against using mobile phones while driving, a good number of people are still guilty of it. Infusing fear in people to desist from that behavior is obviously not working. It is about time we adopted other approaches: how to use phones safely while driving!

1. Types of distractions if using phone while driving

Let's start with major types of distractions if you use phone while driving. This helps you to understand why people should be discouraged from using their phone on car. These distractions include cognitive, visual and manual distractions.

1.1. Cognitive distraction
Cognitive distraction entails mental stimulation. Your attention is taken off the road and channeled to a mental activity. In the process of making a phone call, you forget about the physical driving activity at hand and get engrossed in your mental space.

2. Visual distraction
Visual distraction is caused by the diversion of attention to visual activities. It is the process where you take your eyes off the road and focus on another object. As you try to read that message that just popped up on your phone, you take your eyes off the road and fix them on your phone. At that point, you cannot see vehicles or objects on your way.

3. Manual distraction
Manual distraction is the process where you take your hands off the steering wheel in a bid to do something else with them. You could be trying to get your phone to make a call or use the GPS for directions. This kind of distraction makes it difficult for you to avoid a collision on time.

2. Less risky ways of using mobile phone while driving

As stated earlier, driving and being on your phone are like oil and water that do not mix. It is either you do one at a time or do not do any of them at all. But since you are going to do it regardless of what anyone says, it is necessary that you reduce the danger involved by adopting safe ways of using phone while driving to minimize the three types of distractions.

2.1. Use speed dial
Modern mobile phones come with effective features that many users do not make use of. You can carry out some activities on your phone without channeling a great deal of your attention to them.

One of these features in making phone calls while driving is the speed dial. You do not have to scroll through several numbers on your phone book just to pick out the number you want to dial. Having preset certain numbers on speed dial, all you have to do is press a single number to call the person. You can do this without taking your eyes off the road for long.

Car Talk / What Are The Most Common Signs Of Car Scams? by Naijautonews: 8:58am On Jun 03, 2019
That car seller you want to patronize might be a scammer. Shine your eyes very well. Read up to know their tricks so you avoid car scams and don't fall prey to those fraudsters!
It is an open secret that scammers abound in Nigeria. In fact, they are everywhere. While some Nigerians are working hard to earn a living legitimately, the bad eggs among us do not want to lift a finger to do honest work. They just want to take advantage of other people, duping them of their hard earned money.

Unfortunately, scammers are making a kill in the car selling business. They are always outsmarting a good number of buyers. Well, they can only be successful with you if you give them the chance. They think they are smart? You can be smarter by being a step ahead of them. How? By knowing their written and unwritten tricks. At Naijauto.com, we are totally against scam, hence, we have listed here the most common signs of car scams to help our readers avoid them.

1. Incredible deals

Getting a car for the most affordable price is the dream of every buyer. If you could save some thousands of Naira on the purchase, you will have money left for other purchases. The moment you see a very good deal, you get excited and want to grab it before someone else will.

But wait for a moment.

The seller in question is not Father Christmas. Ordinarily, he would want to make some profit from selling his/her car. So, why did he/she put it on sale at a giveaway price? If it is too good to be true, it is most likely not true.

Scammers use incredible prices to easily lure victims. To avoid this, do a research to get the market price of the car in question. While every seller may not have the same exact price, the prices should be in the same range.

2. Making advance payments

Picture this: You want to buy an item, and without even seeing it, the seller asks you to make advance payment to enable them bring the item over to you for inspection. If this does not scream SCAM, I do not know what else does.

It is totally unacceptable to make advance payments for a car you have not seen. In fact, you should not make any payments until you and the seller have finalized all transactions. If the seller cannot bring the car to a mutually agreed location for you to inspect it, he/she should keep their car, it is not by force to buy.

Meter numbers are tampered with to create false impressions

3. Urgency

Car scammers can be funny. How can you be pressurizing someone to buy something from you? Is it your money? They will give you some crazy story about how the car is high-in-demand, and everyone in their village is interested in buying it. If you do not make payments immediately, the car will not be available to you anymore.

The first thing they ought to know is that they are not the only ones selling cars in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, you can get the same car from a thousand and one other places. Do not make any commitments to buying a car unless you are fully convinced that the car meets your taste. If some other persons want to buy the car immediately, give them the go-ahead to sell it.

Autos / 10 Car Components To Check Before A Road Trip by Naijautonews: 7:55am On Jun 03, 2019
The success of a road trip depends on the condition of your car. Do not take chances. These are car components to check carefully before a road trip to ensure your safety.
There is no specific time or season for a road trip. Although the rate of traveling increases at certain times of the year, especially festive seasons, the highways are always buzzing with vehicles. And with Sallah around the corner, a good number of people are already making plans to embark on that road trip during the public holidays.

You do not want your car to “misbehave” on the road, do you? Cars do not behave themselves just because you want them to. Like every other mechanical object, their attitude depends on how you treat them. If you want your car to be in top gear on that road trip, you need to check all important car components beforehand. Otherwise, you will be unpleasantly surprised. See the list compiled by Naijauto below!

1. Tires

Unless you are traveling to the neighboring town, chances are that you are going to spend hours on the road before you arrive at your destination. The tires make direct contact with the road. That is a lot of work for any object.

Considering the degree of work your tires are going to do, you should not entertain thoughts of driving on tires that are not in the best condition. Inspect them thoroughly. Are they well-inflated? Under-inflated tires are just as bad as over-inflated ones. Both can lead to a crash due to lack of balance.

Get a Vulcanizer to pump them accordingly. Check the tire treads too. Are they wearing out? That is a sign that they are due for a replacement.

2. Car lights

You are probably saying that this is not necessary because you will not be traveling at night. Well, after the day comes the night. If your destination is a long distance away, there is the possibility that you will arrive at night or in the dusk when daylight is diminishing. If your car lights are bad, you will be struggling with your driving. It is always good to be over prepared than be under prepared. The former keeps you grounded regardless of the outcome.

3. Brakes and clutches

The brakes are very sensitive when it comes to driving cars. On no account should you be on the highway with faulty brakes or clutches. If you insist on it, you might just be using your own hands to kill yourself.

Fixing the brakes and clutches while your car is parked is not enough. After fixing, test-drive it. Do you notice any unusual movements? Does your car pull to a certain direction when you apply the brakes? If yes, the brakes need more working.

Have an expert mechanic check it for you.

4. Fluids

Car fluids such as oil and coolant might be liquid substances but they are just as important as the mechanical and electrical components. These fluids help your engine to be well lubricated. When in shortage, there will be friction, leading to damage. You do not want that to happen on your road trip as it will mark the end of the journey. After checking the fluids, have them kept in your car just in case you need them later.

5. Steering wheel

You will need to navigate the road to get to your destination. The steering is the man for the job. Without it, you will end up in the bush. Your steering is in good condition when it takes your command. If you turn left, it should go with you without any reluctance. If you are trying to turn left, and your steering is turning right, there is fire on the mountain. And a road trip is a wrong place for that fire to burn.

Steering problems are very delicate as they involve control. Get an expert mechanic to fix it, and test-drive it before embarking on your trip to be sure that it is working perfectly.

Autos / 8 High-tech Features Your Car Must Have For Utmost Safety by Naijautonews: 6:02am On Jun 03, 2019
Do you know the high-tech features that helps to enhance your car's safety? Has your car been installed most of them? Read on and answer yourself!
Car safety is of utmost importance to every vehicle car owner. In order to maintain the safety of car owners and their passengers on the road, auto manufacturers have developed a lot of technological safety features which are built into cars to keep them safe.

These high-tech features do the job of notifying the car driver on the happenings around them. If you are looking to acquire a new car, you should examine the systems developed to produce a safer and better vehicle.

Naijauto.com has pieced together top high-tech safety features auto manufacturers install in vehicles to make them safer for drivers on the road.

1. Adaptive cruise control

This feature is crucial in controlling car speed. The cruise control, with the use of a radar, observes traffic patterns to know when to increase the car speed or slow down.

Most times, the driver will set the speed and choose the distance the car will be following infront. The adaptive cruise control is equipped with automatic breaks and collision warning. It comes handy in slow traffics, long trips and jam-packed trips as well.

2. Automatic parking

It's a bit difficult when you are trying to squeeze your car in between other cars at the parking lot. The automatic parking lot feature enables cars to be parked without difficulty and makes sure there is no unnecessary collision. Here, drivers are only expected to control the brake and then switch into reverse.

Trying to squeeze your vehicle into the parking area, which happens to be the hardest part is performed by the automatic parking feature. This parking feature has different versions for different cars.

An example is the brand Toyota Prius which is fitted with an intelligent parking assist. The Lexus LS, on the other hand, came with a self-parking feature that does angle and parallel parking.

3. Backup camera

The Backup camera feature is a life saver. Especially with regards to children. A lot of children have lost their lives as a result of cars hitting them from the back. The rearview camera fitted into the car, displays the footage of everything going on at the back. And the driver can see it from the screen placed on the dashboard.

The backup camera has saved plenty of cases hitting from back

Also, the rearview camera protects animals from getting hit. This car safety feature is a necessity for every new mode produced by auto brands.

4. Blindspot detection/ side assist/ collision warning

This technology is very vital as you are notified of cars and objects that are hidden from your view when you are driving or parking your car. The cars and objects are hidden in the blind spot, so to speak.

When there's an obstruction, this feature will detect it and you will see a light flashing in your mirror or the steering wheel vibrating. You can also hear an alarm. These alerts are all based on your settings. It comes handier in trucks, while some displays the objects in your blind spot.

5. Front collision prevention

The front collision prevention feature should be fitted into all cars as it assists drivers in detecting any collision about to occur with another car or object. The feature enables the car to stop automatically.

The collision prevention feature is crucial in the highway, when the car is moving on a speed and there's a possibility for collision to happen. Also known as emergency brake assist, it knows when there's a panic from the driver and goes ahead to reduce the braking distance. The cruise control also plays a role here to stop possible collision.

Autos / See This First Drive Review Of A Refreshed 2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV by Naijautonews: 5:41am On Jun 03, 2019
The new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV feels a lot like the Lincoln MKX but with much more. Check out our first drive review of the SUV here now!
In case you are not aware, Naijauto.com releases first drive reviews of top new cars regularly before they even hit the Nigerian auto market. So, try not to miss our next one!

In this review, we have picked the new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV which is gaining quite some attention in the automotive world recently.

This is the new refreshed and rebranded 2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV

2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV – What’s new?

Even though the name of this SUV is new, anyone familiar with the Lincoln vehicle lineup would immediately get the feeling that this new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV is more of a restyled, rebranded and updated model of the 2nd-generation Lincoln MKX that has been launched since the year 2016. For a brand to refresh and rename its bestselling car is a very risky trick to pull in the automobile market but Lincoln seems not to mind with this one.

Lincoln has been rolling out newer grille design since it debuted the Continental in the year 2017 and as well replaced the “not so loved” winged look which was primarily meant to remind most luxury buyers of “elegance” feel that the 1939 Lincoln Continental possessed – unfortunately, it did not.

Now fitting this new grill onto the 2019 Nautilus sort of completes that initial rollout target and this 5-passenger SUV is definitely handsome compared to the past. The mesh of these new 2019 Nautilus is more like a complete repetition of the brand’s Star logo but it surely works. The hood, headlamps and front fascia are all new and the hood has really grown an attractive and sizeable centre peak altogether.

On could feel immediate love for the 2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV by mere looking

2019 Lincoln Nautilus SUV – What’s under the hood?

Diving under the hood of this new 2019 Lincoln Nautilus one will find a new 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine that is a direct injection type. It is the same engine being used in the much smaller Lincoln MKC and also the Ford Edge that shares the same chassis with the Nautilus as well although Lincoln does not adopt the alias “EcoBoost” for this Nautilus and all of its other powertrains.

The featured 2.0L engine replaces the previous 3.7L naturally aspirated V6 engine as the now standard engine and it is rated as delivering 250hp at 5,500 rpm and 280 pound-foot of torque when at 3,000 rpm on a 93-octane fuel type. These numbers are clearly a decrease from the previous V6 engine which was rated 303 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and a 278 pound-foot of torque when at 4,000 rpm.

Lincoln, however, had the old-fashioned 6-speed auto transmission replaced now with an 8-Speed version making the overall vehicle performance very much comparable and the new SUV’s city fuel economy numbers really went up impressively.

The two engine options of this new Nautilus SUV arse pretty much offered by the brand in all of the SUV’s trim levels with optional all-wheel-drive and standard front-wheel-drive system.

Autos / Why Are Private Companies Now Allowed To Build Roads In Nigeria? by Naijautonews: 9:03am On May 30, 2019
Many people don’t know that private companies are not really allowed to construct roads in Nigeria in the past. But now they can and here is why!

1. The past situation of road construction in Nigeria

Naijauto.com wouldn’t be wrong to claim that over 80% of all major Nigerian roads are in terrible conditions.

For many years now, Nigeria as a country has suffered an infrastructure deficit in a huge way. The country has always seen successive governments that put up different excuses claiming there are insufficient resources for them to build new infrastructures or upgrade old ones.

To worsen the problem, in the past, private companies were not allowed to build roads, which made many people confused.

Well, the fact is: the Nigerian government collects huge taxes from these private companies under the context of building the nation with it. All taxes paid to the government are meant to be used for building and providing all the necessary infrastructures in the country.

Sincerely, it is totally understandable that private sectors would naturally not be motivated to still invest further in public infrastructures after paying such huge taxes to the government for the same purpose.

2. Private companies are now allowed to build roads in Nigeria

However, the whole nation can be thankful now for the recently reviewed and added policies by the Nigerian Federal Government board addressing this issue.

This move had started since way back in the year 2012 that the “Exemption of Profits Order 2012” which is the “infrastructure-for-taxes” provision within the CITA (Companies Income Tax Act) that was actually signed by the then president, Goodluck Jonathan.

To simply put, the policy/order grants all private corporations tax incentives when they invest in Nigeria public infrastructures.

Specifically, this exemption order’s Section 3, Paragraph 1 reads;

"Any company that incurs expenditure on infrastructure or facilities of a public nature shall be entitled to an exemption from income tax of an additional thirty percent of the cost of the provision of the infrastructure or facilities in the assessment period in which the infrastructure or facilities were provided.”

The President has signed order to construct roads across states

Many of the big Nigerian private owned companies like Flour Mills Nigeria PLC, Lafarge Africa, Nigeria LNG, Unilever Nigeria, China road and Dangote Group have leveraged on this exemption order since then and have been reconstructing many roads in Nigeria till date. Some of these projects include Apapa-Wharf Road in Lagos and Obajana-Kabba main road in Kogi state.

To even give further impetus to this “infrastructure-for-taxes” law/exemption order, President Buhari has signed a “New Executive Order 007”.

This newly signed 2019 Executive Order now permits any private company to fund construction projects of major roads in any of Nigeria’s 6 geo-political zones.

This new order has been signed on the 25th of January 2019.

Men of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Command, have arrested over 10 suspected criminals operating in Lagos traffic, and also recovered various firearms from the arrested suspects in different areas of the city.

Autos / Do's & Don'ts When Selling Your Used Car In Nigeria by Naijautonews: 10:47am On May 27, 2019
Selling a used car in Nigeria can be daunting as every buyer is wary of making a bad purchase. With these tips, you will sell off your car before you say Jack!
You were elated when you bought your car. It was probably your first or an addition to your fleet. Hopefully, it served its purpose, taking you around in good condition. For reasons best known to you, you want to sell it off now. It is perfectly fine. People sell their cars every day. While many people would love to order a brand new car from the dealership, not everyone can afford to do that. So, going for used cars is a more affordable option.

Selling a used car in Nigeria can be difficult especially if you go about it blindly. Knowledge is power. Knowing what to do and how to do it will save you the stress involved in selling used cars. Naijauto is committed to making the process a seamless one for you by showing common mistakes when selling used car as below!

1. Taking unflattering pictures

In the internet era of ours, one of the sure-ways to sell your used car is to post it on online car portals like Naijauto.com. You do not just write details of the car, you have to upload pictures of it for all to see. When these pictures are not good, you make it difficult for willing buyers to get it.

Do not take only a picture of the exterior. Take pictures of as many angles as possible. Cars have different parts, right? Show the different parts in the pictures such as the exterior, interior, cabin, engine, boot etc. The more pictures you show, the higher the chances of making a sale faster. You do not have to hire a professional photographer for this. Simply using a SmartPhone with a good camera is okay.

2. Not putting enough information about the car

Pictures are great, but this is a car we are talking about. The pictures can be flawless and the operation of the car is nothing to write home about. Before coming over to inspect the car, buyers want to have an idea of the car’s functionality. They want to know details about the engine performance, mileage, fuel economy etc. Putting these details out from the onset tells buyers that you are honest.

Some interested buyers may contact you to get more information about the car. You cannot give what you do not have. Telling them that you do not know answers to question they asked is a red flag. Learn about all details of the car and be ready to give information when asked for.

3. Doing too much repair

Do not make the grievous mistake of putting a badly damaged car up for sale. Even if you end up fooling the buyer into buying it, they will come back for you. However, you should not spend more than necessary in fixing it.

The rule is, make a list of the major things that need to be fixed. Work with your list to ensure that you stay on a budget. The reason for this is when buying used cars, buyers try to get the best deal. They will price it to the very least. If you have already spent so much on fixing the car, you are most likely not going to make profit from the sale.

4. Not having maintenance records

It is an open secret that used cars put up for sale have one problem or the other. Now, it is up to you to show the buyer that the problems are not too much. Doing this with words will not hold water. Of course, you have to say good things about the car in order to sell it immediately. Buyers want to see concrete evidence of the car’s condition. The best evidence you can show them is the maintenance record. They get to see the number of times the car was taken for repair and what it was repaired for.

A good maintenance record strengthens your bargaining power as you have evidence that the car you are selling has good value. When a maintenance record is absent, buyers feel that they are taking a risk, hence, they will price it very low in order to minimize their loss if their suspicion turn out to be correct.

5. Being ignorant of the car’s resale value

Every car has a resale value. This depends on the general market value of the car and its condition. Not having an idea of these things could make you either under price or over price your car.

To be on top of the situation, carryout research to get the general market value of the car. This will give you an idea of what price to peg yours at. If you have a maintenance record, measure the condition of your car. Is it badly damaged? Will the buyer need to carry out major repairs? If the buyer will not spend much money on fixing the car after purchase, selling it at a high price is justifiable.

Autos / Nigeria Highway Code: Responsibilities Of People In A Car Accident In Nigeria by Naijautonews: 10:25am On May 27, 2019
Did you even know that drivers, occupants and volunteers have some set of recommended roles to play when a car accident occurs? See some of them here!
As many already know by now that road safety in Nigeria is one of our biggest concerns here at Naijauto.com, this is why we have listed out below some of the basic recommended responsibilities of drivers, occupants and volunteers at a car accident scene.

Everyone knows that road accidents can be avoided at all cost but still it's inevitable completely. But when it does happen, it is a terrible idea to believe that one should just pass by, take photos and leave because it’s a “helpless situation”, No!

Drivers, occupants(passengers), and volunteers or passerby all have a good number of helpful roles to play respectively whenever a road accident occurs in order to salvage the whole situation. Check out some of the ones we have listed below according to the Nigeria Highway Code specifications for people in a car accident;

1. Roles of drivers

- If you are driving by, try to stop at the crash scene
- If you are the driver of the affected car, check to see if you are hurt first, then check to see if anyone is hurt
- If you are not hurt, try your best to leave the crash centre to a safer location and try to help others to leave the scene as well
- If law enforcement agents ask you questions, try to state the clearest facts
- Try getting Skidmarks, photographs and any other identification you can
- Be sure to contact your lawyer and insurer afterwards as soon as you can
- Be sure to report the crash (accident) to any FRSC office near you or call the FRSC helpline: 07002255-3772

2. Roles of the affected vehicle occupants

- If you realize that you are not badly hurt, try your best to vacate the accident scene if on the highway
- Give out all the necessary information when asked (this will enable people to help you)
- If you realize that you are hurt, try to explain as best as you can when First Aid arrives especially if you feel any internal pain
- Always cooperate with First Aiders that are trying to help you

3. Roles of Volunteers

- It is best to always stop and help accident victims
- It is recommended that bystanders should cooperate with First Aiders
- Try as much as you can so as not to compound the pains of accident victims by expressing horrible saddening emotions
- You can help clear out obstructions around the area as help arrives
- Try not to constitute additional obstruction yourself

Help a fellow human next time you pass by an accident scene. We are all humans!

Autos / Why Change Car Windscreen Wiper, When You Can Just Trim It? Read How! by Naijautonews: 8:16am On May 23, 2019
How happy would you be if you could just trim out the worn out bits of your windshield wiper instead of the stress of buying and installing a new one? See below the newly introduced product to trim your windshield wiper easily!

A pair of automotive innovators may have just solved a problem that is troublesome to every car owner and costs hundreds of millions each year to fix. That is the issue of changing your windscreen wipers when they get worn out and start leaving glare-causing streaks on the glass. Now it seems you may not need to worry so much about keeping your windshield safe and clear again.

Adnan Alibegovic and Mario Kronberg, the pair innovators make it possible for you to just trim your windscreen wipers and have them work like new, instead of resorting to changing them outright with a newly purchased wiper. This takes time, costs money, and often needs a technician.

Adnan Alibegovic and Mario Kronberg invented ECOCUT

Many car owners become very frustrated with the problem of a worn out wiper. This is because the problem seems minor most times, so you forget them, until you are stuck in traffic in the rain, and can’t see the road for the glare.

Thanks to the amazing new invention by the pair above, you no longer need to change your wipers, you only need to trim the old ones and have them work as if you just pulled them from an auto shop. This invention has been making a lot of noise worldwide and customers are saying many positive things.

Just fit in and pull. ECOCUT does the rest

The inventors made the discovery that only the front part of the blade in contact with the glass gets worn out from the friction. The solution they found? Simply trim away the bad portion using their now patented invention that does this precisely. The windscreen trimmer (ECOCUT) was developed in concert with Prof. Goos Cognito Design (University of Pforzheim) and took three years of research. Now, it seem that time was well spent because this invention is sweeping the Internet.

A good wiper should never leave streaks on the glass

ECOCUT is fairly easy to use and involves a simple folding and cutting, with or without some washing liquid to make it smoother. The device also ships to any place on earth and costs just about ₦,5000. This is certain to make quite a bit of noise when it hits Nigeria, owing to the rainy season.

Travel / Let's Pray Your Car Won't Break Down In These 5 Dangerous Places In Nigeria by Naijautonews: 8:04am On May 23, 2019
Among hundreds of routes in Nigeria, there are certain paths you will never want to stop at, let alone with a broken car. That minor misfortune may lead to a host of dangers later.
Let me get this straight, our cars will inevitably break down at some points, sooner or later, just like any other pieces of machinery. So you should ask yourself "when may it break down?" and "where do you want it to do so?". You may be able to prepare for the first by regular maintenance check but the latter is mostly hypothetical, which is worth a discussion. Bear with us through our imaginations and come to these 5 places that Naijauto team deem the worst places for any car breakdown in Nigeria.

There are many factors that lead us to come up with this list, but the main ones are the safety level, how isolated the place is and how hard it is to reach help from there. Now here they are:

1. Milliken Hill Enugu

This is located in the suburb area of the Enugu city which is around 100 meters higher than the sea level. There is a large natural ditch system that surrounds the hill, rendering the roads unbelievably narrow. With all that said, it would be a nightmare if your car breaks down here. There is no road light at night and any form of help would unlikely be there on time due to the road condition. Nor will the size of the road allow any repair to be performed easily.

2. Benin – Lagos highway

It can be considered "specialty" of this Nigerian road. Armed robber bands frequent every minute on daily basis. Yes, you heard that right. Though they might not dare to shoot you up or stop you in the middle of the road, they would show up when you have to make an emergency turn. No matter how you whine about your financial condition, they would pretty much take everything from you. So let's pray to God that your car would never break down there.

3. Enugu-Onitsha Road

This road looks like it's forever under maintenance. Just a drop of rain and it would turn into a cesspit in no time. Not only you would get help much slower here, chances are that other cars will also break down here and make the situation worse. Not to mention that you would be the target for all the splashing from other vehicles on the road.

4. On any bridge

In Nigeria, most of the bridges are pretty small, really. So if you found your car refusing to run while it's on the bridge, it will create a very annoying situation where many people behind you would honk incessantly in the hope to get by. Also, if you are unlucky enough to have a drunk driver near you, the collision is very likely.

5. In the middle of a traffic jam

Just like with the bridge situation above, the road now is almost locked and the motorists around you would be much less tolerant than you'd think. Should you think the scenario is not that bad, look at the picture below. If your car is suddenly out of order here, how can outside help approach?

Autos / Why You Should Not Be Eating In Your Car by Naijautonews: 5:25am On May 17, 2019
Eating in your car causes more harm than good, and you're likely going to spend a lot fixing the problem it would cause. Before you say anything else, here is why eating in your car isn't such a good thing to do. Some you may have never thought of.

The average Nigerian driver lives a very busy life. They try to combine a nine-to-five job, with daily school run, getting items from the market, running a business and also having some fun. At the end of the day, they end up multitasking and getting some things wrong. One of the those "things" is eating in your car.

Some people might argue that cars even come with cup holders so there's nothing wrong with it. But you pretty much know that the feature is to hold the cup or bottle and not serve as an alternate dining table. Eating in your car causes more harm than good, and you're likely going to spend a lot fixing the problem it would cause. Before you say anything else, here is why eating in your car isn't such a good thing to do, explained by Naijauto.com!

1. Eating in your car is a traffic offence

Okay don't panic yet. Eating in your car (while driving) is a traffic offence. Although people rarely get penalised for that, but it's actually in the traffic laws code book of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC). This is considered an offence because it puts the life of every other road user at risk. You could choke while eating and driving, you could get intoxicated or even distracted. Within the few seconds you try to take that gulp and get your eyes back on the road, an accident can happen. Therefore, don't eat while driving.

2. Eating in your car is biohazardous

Being biohazardous simply means it would pose a threat to the life. With the way a car is designed, everything is literally crammed together, and just a tiny space is available for legroom. When eating and particles or even a huge chunk of your food falls in these tight spaces, your adult hand might not be able to reach through and clean or pick the food up. Now that rogue food particle remains in that area for days and weeks. After a while, bacteria and fungi acts on them. Anyone getting into that vehicle after that can contract a disease without knowing. In little or no time, you car will become a biohazardous trap.

3. Eating in your car ruins the air

Materials used in making car seats and other parts of the interior are usually soft. Hence, they soak up any fluid and even smell. Unlike dining tables that are easy to wipe and polish, your car will likely soak up the food remnants. This causes an unpleasant smell that lingers almost forever. At the end of the day you may end up spending a fortune cleaning the seats, carpets and handles, or even changing the fabric entirely.

4. Eating in your car makes it difficult for it to get sold

If you're in the habit of eating in your car, keep in mind that the vehicle ends up looking more pristine than it actually is. When you're in distress and need to sell your car, it brings down the value. Nobody would want to pay millions of naira for a car with biscuit remnants, palm oil stains, smell of rotten fish and so on.

5. Eating in your car is a bad habit

Just thought to end with this point. There's a reason your car moves and your dining table doesn't. Do not switch their roles. You need to sit comfortably to savour your meal, and a car doesn't provide such luxury.

Autos / Understanding Hybrid Cars, Their Pros & Cons by Naijautonews: 10:33am On May 16, 2019
Hybrid cars are becoming increasingly popular for their unique modes of operations. Check out information about their various types, uses and benefits!

1. What is a hybrid car?

Hybrid cars are cars that operate on multiple means of propulsion. In other words, they combine an electric motor and a diesel/ petrol engine.

One of the major advantages of hybrid cars is that they have low fuel consumptions and emission of less CO2 in comparison to regular cars that have a diesel or petrol engine.

Owners of hybrid cars also enjoy other benefits including lower company car tax and first year road tax. They also avoid charges in congestion.

2. Different types of hybrid cars

Hybrid cars make use of an engine that’s conventional, a battery and an electric motor. These cars are of three different types. Each of them has a peculiar mode of operation.

2.1. Parallel hybrid cars

Parallel hybrid is the most popular amongst all hybrid cars. A very good example of this is the Toyota Prius. Commonly driven by people, there are three ways to power its wheels: using only the electric motor, using only the engine or by combining both sources of power.

When its speed gets up to 15mph, the Prius engages only the electric motor for power. This is quite economical for running errands around the city. The petrol aspect of the engine comes to use when the speed is increased, and is often used when acceleration is hard.

Upon using the braking system which is regenerative, it releases electricity, and it’s saved in the battery for future use.

2.2. Range extender hybrid cars

Range extender hybrid cars make use of their inbuilt electricity for the production of electricity in the generator designed to recharge its batteries. The driving of the car isn’t done by the engine – it only dishes out energy to the electric motor.

A very good example of this type of hybrid is the BMW i3. Likewise, Honda Jazz Hybrid is another brand that makes use of an electric motor to boost its somewhat small conventional engine whenever the need arises.

Hybrids can also be categorized as mild or strong, in terms of the level of battery power they are made of. Having a high battery capacity, strong hybrids have the qualities to go farther than mild hybrids that make use of just electric power.

2.3. Plug-in hybrids

Taking after its name, this brand of hybrid can be connected to electricity for its batteries to be recharged. It can also be charged while on the move. They are in between full electric vehicles and conventional hybrids.

Despite having a conventional engine, their batteries are larger than those of regular hybrids. They can also go long distances making use of their electric power solely. They go as far as 30 miles sometimes.

Plug-in hybrids are becoming popular by the day. Examples of these include: Toyota Prius, Mistubishi Outlander and Volvo V60 among others.

3. Benefits of hybrid cars

Hybrid cars offer some benefits to users. Driving one is just like driving a regular car with automatic transmission. However, it has a little difference in terms of performance.

Strong hybrids present options for power modes from eco to power. The driver gets to choose maximum performance in line with the given driving conditions.

Drivers of hybrid cars don’t have to worry about range anxiety. Also, they don’t have to worry about charging the batteries as they can charge their batteries themselves.

Despite the fact that hybrid cars’ tax benefits are no longer as big as they were in the past, drivers of company cars still enjoy lower payments for Benefit-In-Kind (BIK) tax. Users of diesel or petrol cars pay more.

4. Advice for buying a hybrid car

A hybrid car is most beneficial if you use your car around town a lot. You get to enjoy the free travel of using only the electric power. If you do a lot of long distances, a diesel or petrol car is better off.

Car Talk / What Is The Difference Between Shocks And Struts? by Naijautonews: 9:21am On May 16, 2019
Though the shock and strut are used interchangeably, they are different. Check the differences of these two car components and see which one you should use for your car!

Plying through a road with potholes, speed bumps or even a rough road while your shocks and struts are in good working condition should make you appreciate their functions. The two car parts are frequently addressed together. They see to it that your car is kept sturdy and safe. As they are discussed together, yet separate parts, you may wonder about the difference that exists between them. This article on Naijauto will be making the difference known to you. We’ll be explaining what a shock and strut is, their functions and what will happen in the event of wear.

1. What is the difference between a shock and strut?

Every car you see driving on the road is fitted with a vehicle suspension system which has multiple individual parts. They are shock absorber (or called struts) and springs. The springs are responsible for providing support to the car and cushioning effect, in the event of the car hitting an object on the road. The shock absorber restricts the vertical travel (motion) from the spring, together with absorbing the effect from obstruction on the road.

Due to the fact that the shock and strut serve the same purpose, people use shock and strut interchangeable when describing both parts. However, there is a difference between both which exists in their design and each also has distinct advantages and disadvantages. You can't replace a shock with a strut and neither can you replace a strut with a shock

The main difference between a shock and a strut is evident in the suspension system of each component.
Every vehicle is expected to use a strut or a shock on each corner of the wheels. A number of vehicles use the strut in the front while the shock absorber stays at the back.

Vehicles that have no upper control arm and without connection to the knuckle uses strut while vehicles that have an independent suspension or a strong axle on the rear uses shock absorbers.

2. What is a shock absorber?

A shock absorber is a car component that's constructed to be a bit stiffer than a strut. It is so because they carry out their functions with ancillary suspension parts to take in the shock from the road.

We have three main types of shock absorbers.

Mono-tube shock absorber
This is the most commonly used among other shock absorbers. Also known as a gas shock absorber, it’s produced from a steel tube, with a piston and rod embedded on the inside. Whenever the car drives on top of a speed bump, the piston will be pushed upward and the gas compresses it slowly for a leveled transition.

Dual shock
A dual shock (also called twin-turbo shock) has two vertical tubes with hydraulic fluid inside them. When it compresses, fluid will be transported to the secondary tube.

Coil-over shocks
Vehicles that have the shock absorbers placed on the front are known as coil-over shocks. Here, the shock absorber is covered with a coil spring.

3. What is a strut?

A widely known strut is the MacPherson strut. It is a strong and durable part that merges the spring and strut into a single unit. Some cars make use of a single strut, together with the use of a separate coil spring. A strut is an important component of the vehicle's suspension system, It affects the alignment angles. This makes it expensive than shock as alignment has to be done when you are changing the strut/The struts are placed to a steering knuckle and the top of the spring is fitted to support the body. Struts are smaller in size than shock absorbers and it is the main reason they are frequently used in cars that have compressed suspension travel.

4. Which should I use in my car: a shock or a strut?

As it is with moving car components, the shock and strut are created to depreciate or wear out with time. Based on the type of car you drive, a strut and shock may tend to last ranging from 30,000 to 75,000 miles. Follow the recommendation provided by your car's manufacturer to replace the shock and strut. And when replacing them, it will be a good idea to make use of the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) replacement car component when they are due to be replaced. If your vehicle's shock absorbers were installed at the point of production, then be sure to also use the same shock absorber that was used. The same thing applies to the strut.

When replacing the shocks and struts, replace them in pairs (they should be changed on the same axle). Make sure you carry out a complete professional suspension alignment so that the steering, Tyres, and suspension system are all aligned straight.

Car Talk / Learn How Your Car Engine Work To Better Take Care Of It! by Naijautonews: 9:10am On May 16, 2019
If you are looking for information on how car engines work, you should know that it takes thousands of completed combustion cycles to get your car engine running while you move from point A to point B. One combustion cycle on the other hand is made up of four strokes, intake, compression, combustion and exhaust.
As easy as turning a key or pushing a button to start a car is, there is actually a lot of works that have been put in and processes going on to make that happen.

If you have ever wondered how a car engine actually works, then today you are getting firsthand information about how car engines work from Naijauto.com.

For you to get from point A to point B hassle-free, your car engine completes what we call a combustion cycle.

Now, completion of several of these combustion cycles is what powers your car engine. In other words, the process of powering your car engine is called the combustion cycle.

A combustion cycle comprises four steps called ‘strokes’ (hence the name four-stroke engine).

1. Strokes involved in a combustion cycle
These four strokes involved in a complete combustion cycle include:

Intake
Compression
Combustion
Exhaust

Further down, we will take a look at these four strokes and how they contribute to a car engine’s combustion cycle.

It will suffice to know that engines are powered by internal combustions which are small, controlled explosions taking place in a car's various cylinders. This is the effect of igniting a fuel-air mixture in the various cylinders of the engine. This process occurs thousands of times in a minute, helping the car to move.

1.1. Intake
As the crankshaft moves, the pistons move up and down, reaching the valves mounted on the camshaft.

On one hand, as the piston moves down, the timing belt rotates the camshaft causing the valves mounted on it to open and release a fuel-air mixture. This process is called intake.

1.2. Compression
The compression stroke of a car engine occurs as the piston moves upward. This upward movement of the piston forces the fuel-air mixture released during the intake stroke into a tight space.

1.3. Combustion

Right after compression, just before the piston moves down again comes combustion. This occurs when the spark plug produces a spark to ignite the fuel-air mixture causing a small explosion. The effect of this small explosion forces the piston down rapidly, producing the needed energy to power the car engine.

1.4. Exhaust
Just as the piston reaches its lowest point, the valves of the exhaust system opens in readiness to expel the gases formed during combustion. As the piston moves back up, these gases are expelled via the exhaust valve. That completes the combustion cycle for one cylinder of a four-stroke engine.

As mentioned earlier, all four strokes involved in one combustion cycle are repeated thousands of time per minute to keep the car engine running. In understanding how car engines work, you should know that cars usually have multiple cylinders of different capacities.

Also cars have different layouts and configurations, all giving different power outputs, which will be discussed below.

2. Most common car engine layouts
There are varying car engine layouts one is likely to find on cars.

A car engine layout is determined by the arrangement of the different cylinders. Manufacturers use these different cylinder arrangements in a bid to add more power to their engines or to make sure the engines occupies smaller spaces.

The most common engine layouts include:

Straight
Inline
V- Shape
Flat

2.1. Straight Layout
In a straight car engine layout, the various cylinders are arranged in a straight line parallel to the car from front to back. The straight arrangement allows for more cylinders and is common in most powerful saloon cars such as the BMW and Mercedes.

2.2. Inline Layout

In this engine layout, the cylinders are arranged perpendicular to the car. They are placed side by side in upright positions across the engine bay. This arrangement is known to occupy a more compact engine space allowing for other engine component such as battery and radiator to be fitted around the cylinders.

This engine layout is common in most hatchbacks and portable family cars.

2.3. V-shape Layout
In the V-shape engine layout, the cylinders are mounted on their sides at an angle of 60, with two rows facing outwards while being connected by the crankshaft at the base where it forms a "V".

This arrangement allows for more number of cylinders to be fitted into a smaller space providing more power. On that account, the V-shape car engine layout is common in supercars.

2.4. Flat Layout
In this case, the cylinders are arranged horizontally with two rows facing outwards.

The flat car engine layout is not very common but are highly placed because it offers a lower centre of gravity allowing for balance and easy handling. This kind of engine layout can be found in the Porsche 911 sports car where a flat six-cylinder engine was used.

Car Talk / Lexus Or Mercedes? 2008 Lexus IS 250 Vs Mercedes Benz C300 Comparison by Naijautonews: 5:57am On May 10, 2019
Both belong to luxury sedan segment, 2008 Lexus IS 250 vs 2008 Mercedes Benz C300 compete closely on the used car market in Nigeria. Check here our detailed comparison and verdicts from Naijauto experts!

Below are our key points:
- The two cars share similar automobile layouts but Mercedes-Benz C300 offers a larger and more powerful engine. The top speed of Lexus vs Mercedes is 204 hp and 228 hp respectively.

- Regarding the driving style & reliability, Lexus IS 250 wins with smoother driving feel. Mercedes Benz’s model, albeit secure and balanced too, isn’t highly evaluated when it comes to reliability.

- The manual transmission versions of Lexus IS 250 2008 and Mercedes-Benz C300 2008 share similar fuel economy rate of 18/26 mpg city/highway. However, IS 250 automatic transmission shows much higher efficiency than its competitor.

- 2008 Lexus IS 250 is cheaper than a 2008 Mercedes Benz C300

- With regards to practicality in Nigerian context, it’s recommended you go for a Lexus IS 250 because it requires less maintenance service (& fees), let alone the larger availability of Lexus spare parts throughout the country.

- Both models require the replacement of brake components, exterior car door handle and headlight bulbs while a Benz C300 seems to have problem with its air-con rather soon.

- For the luxury criterion, neither of these models stand out because both have tried their best to offer users utmost comfort though the back seats in two cars are complained to be a bit cramped.

- In safety tests, the Japanese brand doesn’t do as well as its counterpart: while Lexus only score 4 out of 5 stars in front impact crash test, the Benz C300 is rated “Good” in the same type of exam.
