Autos / Funaabites Bound For NYSC In Near Fatal Accident In Jos; Bus Totaled by Naijautonews: 8:57am On Jun 21, 2019
Fortunes smiled on a couple of new graduates of the Federal University of Abuja as they were able to walk away from a road crash that totaled their bus. Check details here!

A couple of Funaabites from Abuja on their way to serve the Fatherland on the mandatory Youth Service program have narrowly escaped death, along with other passengers in the Toyota Hiace bus they were all traveling in.

The accident according to the grateful survivors occurred due to driver recklessness and over-speeding. The passengers reported that soon after they left Abuja, the driver engaged in fearful road antics all the way to Jos.

Matters came to a head when soon after leaving Jos, the driver of the Toyota Hiace bus decided to play at drag race with another bus attempting an overtake. The bus driver conveying the University of Abuja graduates resisted, with the result that the vehicle crashed badly.

The two NYSC draftees escaped unscathed and other passengers received mild of severe injuries. Fortunately there were no fatalities.

This latest incident underscores the often harped refrain of the FRSC cautioning drivers against dangerous over speeding. It also highlights the need for more of a presence of the safety Corps along interstate highways.

Autos / 10 Reasons Why Honda Accord 2019 Won Best Car Of The Year by Naijautonews: 8:35am On Jun 21, 2019
Sleek chassis, extra spacious interior, fuel economy, and affordability are a summary that earned the Honda Accord 2019 the AutoWeb Buyer’s choice best car of the year award

Saloon cars used to be in the pinnacle of the market way back in the early centuries but have witnessed a decline in attention over the recent years with the introductions of more model builds like the crossovers, coupe hatchbacks, space-buses, SUVs, etc.

Many brands at some point abandoned their saloon models to focus on these newer inclusions but we saw brands like Honda and Toyota stay the course on their saloon models.

Generally, the newer model cars couldn’t have taken the spot of the saloon cars in some areas where Fuel efficiency and maintenance are the main consideration is choosing a car as the crossover cars, SUVs, etc. tend to be more expensive, less fuel efficient and have higher maintenance costs.

One of the salon models that has stood this test of time is the Honda Accord Saloon cars. Having considered all necessary factors, the demand for the mid-size saloon model has been on the increase in many parts of the world including Nigeria and has made them a household favorite in these areas. The Honda Accord model saw a total overhaul in the 2018 edition that has got many car enthusiasts talking. That and many more reasons is what has won the Honda Accord 2019 saloon the AutoWeb Buyer’s choice best car of the year award.

Here Naijauto have 10 reasons why buyers rooted for this simply amazing car model helping it to win the award.

1. Not expensive to own
The Honda Accord 2019 is a luxury to behold but interestingly not one to break your bank. The car is fitted with an alloy wheel, keyless entry with push to start button and the Honda Sensing suite (one of their newest safety features) and costs less than N10 million.

The Accord 2019 top of the line model (Touring) also has a good bargain on it considering its high-end luxury features like adaptive suspension dampers, rain sensing windshield wipers, head-up display and heated rear seats for those in cold regions and costs just around N 12million.

2. It doesn’t have a cheap look

One beautiful feature of the Honda Accord 2019 is the luxury outlook it carries. You don’t have to feel less of anything driving around in one of them as they are built with a unique aesthetic appeal. From the stylish outlook to modern high quality interior build and its powertrain that gives you a redefined driving experience and high tech safety measures, you probably won’t be needing a million dollar Bugatti to savour the taste of those stunning features.

3. Comprehensive and user-friendly Infotainment system
The Honda Accord 2019 has a very user-friendly control system all placed with a mix of well positioned button, knobs and an 8-inch screen command (touch screen in some newer models).

The Honda Accord infotainment system supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration and its mobile app allows your lock, unlock and start the car remotely using your phone. It has standard Bluetooth connectivity and its top of the line touring model also gives you the option of sync compatibility with smartphones using near-field communication (NFC) technology.

Autos / Perfect Statesman! Former Gombe Deputy Governor Returns Exotic Cars by Naijautonews: 8:19am On Jun 21, 2019
What a great example! Former deputy governor of Gombe State has returned several official exotic cars in his possession. Click to get the full details of why he did that!

Gombe State immediate past deputy governor, Charles Iliya, has voluntarily brought fought state vehicles in his possession in adherence to the directive of the current governor of the state, Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya. The vehicles were made available to the recovery committee set up by the governor to oversee the directive.

The Committee Chairman, Group Capt. Peter Bilal, (rtd.), disclosed the ex-deputy governor turned in a Lexus Jeep (bullet proof) along with two other exotic cars. He expressed his appreciation to former government officials who surrendered vehicles, landed properties and other items of the state that were in their possession.

The recovery committee made an appeal to the immediate past governor of the state, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, former Commissioner of Finance, Principal Permanent Secretary (PPS), Aide Decamp (ADC), and other appointed government officials to give account of properties said to run into billions, that were allegedly disbursed when their tenure in office elapsed.

“To this end, the former governor has failed to comply with the directive or surrender the expected properties in his possession. The committee had thoroughly investigated the process followed in disposing the properties in question and realized that due process was not followed,” Bilal stated.

Car Talk / 9 Best Cars For Students In Nigeria by Naijautonews: 5:20am On Jun 21, 2019
Student life might be hectic with picnic and parties. A means of transport is quite a problem solver for those dynamic times. If you're a student, and about to get one for yourself, check out this list of 9 best cars for students in Nigeria now!

The Nigerian road safety code of conduct stipulates that you can legally start driving on Nigerian roads from the age of 18. This is because it's believed that this is the age when you make certain life decisions independently. This is also the age most people get into the university. If you're within the age range of 18 - 30 and still a student, you would want to stay trendy and boost your swag as much as possible.

One way to do that is by having your own ride. Once you can afford one, or your parents have asked you to choose what car you like, it's wise that you select an "easy to maintain" ride. Therefore, we at Naijauto have decided to bring you the best cars for students in Nigeria, helping you make an informed decision. We considered fuel economy, affordable, ease of maintaining, adaptability and swag while compiling this list.

1. Toyota Camry
This is one of the most popular car models you would find on Nigerian roads.

From the 2.2 to the 2.4 and the muscle, the Toyota Camry cars are fuel efficient and spacious. As a student, you don't need to spend your pocket money on fuel or expensive car parts when the Camry saves you fuel and the spare parts are everywhere. The Camry also has space for when you wish to convey your friends from class back home - one passenger with you in front, 3 or 4 more at the back seat.

2. Toyota RAV4

The Toyota RAV4 is not only an affordable SUV but gives you the feeling of having a "jeep" (what Nigerians nickname SUVs). This compact sport utility vehicle has just the right space to help you move cargo. If you're moving from one hostel to another, you won't need to rent a van when your RAV4 can do the job. Since the Toyota Venza was discontinued, the RAV4 has risen in sales, so buy yours ASAP!

3. Honda CRV

The Honda CRV is one compact SUV that has constantly been in competition with the Toyota RAV4. They are almost similar, though the CRV is a bit more expensive. But it adds style to your arrival when you drive one. Also, keep in mind that campus babies love SUVs. You'll find yourself hitting many birds with one stone... Sorry, one CRV!

4. Toyota Corolla

A lot of people have sought an alternative to the Camry, and many switched to the Toyota Corolla. It's more compact than the Camry and chic. It's believed to also adapt better to Nigerian roads than the Camry. But another school of thought says the car is feminine. Without sounding non-feminist, I partly agree. So if you're a female student thinking of what car would fit your personality, you should consider this ride.

Autos / Lagos Will Use Mobile Courts For Traffic Offenders by Naijautonews: 8:35am On Jun 19, 2019
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has recently disclosed the desire of his government to establish a special court to try traffic offenders in Lagos State. He also revealed what he plans for immediate punishment to ensure everyone's obeying the laws. Read details here!

Over the last weekend, the newly elected governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made it known that traffic offenders would be tried in special courts within the state.

The governor believes that the special courts will be created in the state soon and anybody found guilty of traffic laws will be punished accordingly at every point of contravention.

Nobody will be spared by the government regardless of societal status. Every motorist must adhere strictly to the laid down traffic rules and regulations.

The traffic situation in some parts of Lagos surely needs draconian measures to put road users into check

In a statement from Gboyega Akosile, the deputy chief press secretary made it known that the governor reiterated this on Sunday, during an interdenominational thanksgiving service organized by Lagos chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria at the headquarters of the Deeper Life Bible Church at Gbagada, Lagos.

The governor was quoted in a statement, saying:

"We want the people to obey Lagos traffic law. We want them to understand that they are not the only road users who have right of way. If you want my government to finish well, don’t drive against the traffic."

Sanwo-Olu administration is obviously not taking traffic situation in Lagos State with levity

"We are working with the Acting Chief Judge of the state to set up special mobile courts that will dispense judgment on traffic offences. Any offender would be made to serve the punishment immediately, which could be in the form of compulsory community service. We are declaring zero tolerance for disobedience to traffic rules."

The governor believes that with the support of the residents of Lagos State, the desire to achieve “Greater Lagos” project will be realized.

Autos / How Much Should These Ridiculously Overloading Cars Be Fined? by Naijautonews: 8:17am On Jun 19, 2019
Does Nigerian traffic law allow for commercial drivers to drive around trucks loaded to this extent on Nigerian roads? Read the gist here with photos!

Naijauto has put out many articles spelling out how overloadingdamages various components of a vehicle but it seems Nigerian commercial drivers are just too accustomed to the act.

Many drivers in Nigeria are not even aware that it is illegal to load a vehicle beyond the permitted limit and be driving such a ridiculously overloading car around on Nigerian roads.

Overloaded heavy duty vehicles may have to pay up to N10m fine

If you are ever found guilty of such act, the fines may be easy to offset, so is this why some drivers risk this? Look at a couple below;

- A ₦5,000 penalty is charged when a driver is caught driving an overloaded vehicle on a Nigerian federal road.
- If caught on a road in Lagos State, the penalty is a ₦2,000 fine.

Is this really a thing that happens? Unfortunately, yes

Not so much money, isn’t it? So how much should these car owners be fined to stop this dangerous action?

Actually, if you consider the stress and other hidden/unofficial charges that Nigerian traffic officers will collect from you then, you might want to stay away from such an act. However, traffic officers can't present at all corners to fine these drivers. It's best if you can educate yourself and others about this!

Can't believe how they can pack this load!

Autos / Nigerian Paradox: Fuel Station Uses Solar Panels For Electricity by Naijautonews: 8:08am On Jun 19, 2019
Ex-Aviation Minister seems to find it outrageous seeing a fuel station in Nigeria using Solar panels for generating electricity to power their pumps. See how he comments on the scenario!

Naijauto recently found a controversial update on Osita Chidoka’s twitter handle about a petrol station using solar panels for electricity and it is really a topic worth discussing at length.

Recall that Mr Chidoka was an Ex-Minister of Aviation under President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. So, it is worth a little attention when such a person like Osita Chidoka is lamenting about the current failures in the Nigerian system as a whole.

In his recent post on twitter, the Ex-minister shared photos of a certain fuel station that he spotted and stopped by at Abuja that relies solely on Solar panels for generating the electricity needed for powering their pumps and other operations.

Can you see how a large part of the fuel station’s roof is fitted with Solar panels?

His post on Twitter read thus;

“I stopped to buy fuel at Oando station at Jabi, Abuja and noticed solar panels on the roof. The Attendant in response to my inquiry said they are off grid and no generator, everything in the station is powered by solar! Fuel seller on solar. Is Nigeria ready for post-oil world?

Isn’t it worth thinking for a minute, how can a station that sells fuel for generating power be relying on solar energy for its own power?

While some agree this is kind of strange and reflects ineffective administration, most comments consider it as a normal phenomenon. You can check some replies to Mr. Chidoka's post as below!

Autos / Using Phone While Driving Will Burn Your Money & Soul: Why? by Naijautonews: 10:10am On Jun 17, 2019
You certainly have heard about this warning before, but do you really know the underlying reasons? If the answer is no, you need to check this article out.
Most of us have heard about this warning "Don't take phone calls while driving", yet we would do exactly the opposite. Despite the most gruesome reason is we could be involved in deadly accidents, many of us just neglect it.

So since your own death is not sufficient for us to persuade you to drop your phone, let's try other approaches. Just bear with Naijauto for 2 to 3 minutes and see if you would find our reasons for not using phone while driving sound persuasive or not:

1. Think about your loved ones!
Since most drivers are men and a great number of them are breadwinners of their families, what would the life of their loved ones be if they are paraplegic, quadriplegic or even die? Financial role aside, how could they live knowing that their loved one might never awake or be able to stand up from the hospital bed?

Not only so, how about they are actually driving their relatives when the accident happens? Their inattentiveness might result in the death of the whole family. Even worse, should they be the only person alive, they will have to bear the loss of their families with them the whole life.

2. Think about your wallet!
We just cover the worst situation, now let's move on to more lenient ones. First off, should you find yourself in an accident, scratch-free even on the bodywork of your car, but the involved party injured, you might be in trouble. In that case, even it's the other person's fault, the police might conclude differently since you're the one who has a distraction source in hand. Trust me, the legal fee is not very comfortable.

The legal and insurance fee would likely leave a deep hole in your pocket

If you and the other person got out of the scene unscratched, this accident is registered in your driving record. If you then have an intention to purchase car insurance, you will see that the price would be double or even triple the usual price if the insurance company get their hands on your record. There's no point in providing insurance for a neglect driver, just like they wouldn't sell insurance to patients already with deadly diseases.

Autos / Strategies For Buying Car: How To Save Most Money by Naijautonews: 9:10am On Jun 17, 2019
Buying a brand new car of your choice may not be within your budget. Rather than give up, you can try these other ways to get a car at a reduced cost!

Owning a car in Nigeria is far from being a luxury. Matter of fact, it’s a necessity. If you don’t have a car, you are faced with two additional problems in your life: walking in the hot sun and jumping commercial buses. And since a commercial bus isn’t your private car, asking for comfort is a tall order. You have to ‘manage’ like everyone else.

So, you are tired of the above scenarios, and want to get a car for yourself. But unfortunately, the price of a tear-rubber car is out of your budget. Don’t give up. You can still get a decent car within your budget. Naijauto is here to show you best strategies in buying car in Nigeria:

1. Get an outgoing model
A car begins to lose market value the moment it’s purchased. This is very similar to other technological innovations. A brand new version of the car you want may be out of your financial powers, but an outgoing model may not be too far from it.

Do your research about the outgoing car model, and confirm that it has all the features you need. If it doesn’t look so brand new, don’t worry, a simple facelift will do the magic. You get to save some money and drive the same car model.

If you want latest models, don't ever think of saving money!

2. Buy by month end
Car dealers often have targets. They are required to sell a certain number of cars every month. They cannot conclude on the state of the market until the month is coming to an end. A dealer who hasn’t met his targets for the month will be eager to makes sales. As a result of this, such a dealer will offer buyers good discounts. Don’t be in a hurry to get the car. Wait for a few more days or weeks for month end to enjoy this benefit.

3. Consider getting a pre-registered car
Dealers devise various strategies to meet their sales target at the end of the month. One of these ways is that, they buy cars that are yet to be sold, and register the car in their name. A customer who buys the car becomes the second owner of the car.

Bear it in mind that this will have an impact on the car price if you decide to resale it in the future as it’ll have multiple previous owners. In addition to this, you also lose some part of your warranty because it started counting the moment the dealer registered the car in his name.

If you don’t mind putting up with these little inconveniences, you can find a clean car at a price far lower than its brand new counterpart.

4. Be flexible
Obviously, you want to get a good deal. As a result of this, you might have a long list of things you want your dream car to have. It’s okay to have standards. But you need to understand that, unless you are buying a brand new car, you may not find one that ticks off every item on your bucket list. For instance, passing off the opportunity to buy a sound car because it doesn’t have your favorite isn’t a good decision. If you are so passionate about a particular color, you can have the car repainted later.

Be flexible based on your budget and essential needs!

5. Wait for auctions
Cars are auctioned from time to time by institutions such as the Nigeria Customs Service. Good cars are put up for sale at prices lower than their actual prices in the market. Exercising patience for the next auction will help you save a lot of money.

6. Swap your current car
If you happen to already own a car, and want to get a new one, swapping is a good option to save money. Since you are offering the dealer your own car, you can top up the cost price of the one you are interested in buying.

Don’t be in a hurry to sell to the first dealer that indicates interest. Ask other dealers, and pick the best deal.

Autos / A First Drive Review Of The Revised 2020 Mercedes-amg GLC 63 SUV by Naijautonews: 8:38am On Jun 17, 2019
Are you a huge fan of Mercedes-AMG SUVs? Don’t miss this first drive review of the revised 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 SUV. Check it out here now!

This is yet another “first drive” review of a Mercedes SUV from Naijauto.com, and we promise to keep feeding you guys with more fresh ones as new vehicles get launched.

A first-time drive in the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 Sport Utility Vehicle comes with so much to grasp in the overall experience.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 – Drivability, Power and Speed
The first thing one will notice is how effectively this new SUV can maximize passing zones on highways and its exciting acceleration is way more impressive than most of the crossovers or typical SUVs already available in its segment of the market.

The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 gets its power from the featured 4.0L bi-turbo V8 hand-built engine that produces 469hp at 5,500 rpm and a 479lb-ft of torque at a 1,750 rpm. The acceleration of this new GLC 63 is estimated to take just 3.8 seconds from zero to 60mph on the standard models and 3.6 seconds for the “S” coupe model.

On the non-S standard model of the GLC 63 you get a 155mph speed while on the S Coupe model, you get 174mph speed.

With a bi-turbo V8 engine of 155-174mph speed, this 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 can't be slow

Such a modern SUV like this 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 would never come without major drive assistance technology as you might already guess. It sure packs interesting drivability enhancement features such as a 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system, adaptive damping, standard air spring suspension and a rear differential that is electronically controlled as it proportionally allocates torque from one side to the other across the vehicle’s rear axle.

This new SUV also features programmed and hardware optimizing drive modes that control the vehicle’s mechanicals. The available drive modes now include Race (S Coupe model only), Sport+, Sport, Comfort (default mode), and Slippery mode that alters the exhaust note, transmission behaviour, throttle mapping, steering and damping of the GLC 63.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 – What’s inside?

The interior of this 2020 GLC 63 SUV is super sportified and has gotten the same updates just as the other vehicles in the GLC lineup especially the new and hot MBUX interface. It has also got a nice 10.25 inches central display screen that is capable of showing 3 functions at a time, and also features artificial intelligence powered responses to voice queries that any drive prefaces with the words “Hey, Mercedes”.

The interior is super sportified and packed with adequate modern technologies

This system also comes with capabilities of responding to different gestures when it has the interior MBUX assistant in its option. The featured navigation system can also now easily place directional type of arrow overlays right on the feeds it getting from the vehicle’s front camera. A standard new digital instrument cluster is also added to the 2020 GLC 63 and its steering wheel now includes set of mini touchpads capable of responding to horizontal or vertical swipes as well as controlling the aspects of 2 featured forward screens.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 – How’s the outside?
On the outside, a 2020 GLC 63 SUV can be easily denoted by its grille opening that clearly widens out towards the vehicle’s bottom, and it is filled nicely with a set of beautiful vertical bars. The rear bumpers, wheel-arch mouldings, lower bodyside extensions, lower fascia, and wheels are as large as twenty-one inches and further distinguishes these AMG-fettled SUVs from the regular GLCs and slight tweaks are also visible in the design too.

2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 – Pricing
The 4Matic version has a starting price of ₦26.9 million ($74,745), the fastback (Coupe) version starts at ₦27.8 million ($77,495) which is a clear ₦990,000 ($2,750) premium offering over its very much practical counterpart.

At the very top level on the price list is the GLC 63 “S” Coupe that is just simply a baller by surpassing its non-S versions with ₦2.7 million ($7,600) to start at ₦30.6 million ($85,095).

Note: All of the above prices include the ₦358,200 ($995) destination charge.

It is worth mentioning however that, the beautiful Coupe variant of this new 2020 GLC 63 does have some downsides like slashed cargo space, and hindered rear visibility which like it or not are the things that just had to be done to produce an “S” version for those buyers seeking a GLC with max-attack.

All of the 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 series are expected to rumble itself into dealerships sometimes in the later part of this year 2019.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHSGe3oAX10

What we think
Can anyone really dislike a super-fast, powerful and beautiful vehicle like this 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63? We don’t think so.

You have it all from our above detailed first drive review if it looks like your type of “thing” then don’t even hesitate to grab your copy once it hits the market.

But if you can’t wait and/or your budget is low and you might want to check out Naijauto's website for amazingly huge collections of New, Tokunbo, and Nigerian used cars for sale in Nigeria.

Autos / 6 Armored Official State Cars That Match Donald Trump’s Beast Cadillac One by Naijautonews: 8:03am On Jun 17, 2019
Donald Trump made a huge statement with his Beast Cadillac One car on his recent visit to the UK. Take a look at similar machines owned by other world leaders!

President of the United States, Donald Trump, was in the UK recently on an official 3-day visit. Expectedly, his visit drew a lot of media attention due to his immense influence across the globe. The US President made a huge statement with his official ride – the Cadillac One Limo often referred to as The Beast. This automotive masterpiece is said to cost a whooping $1.5m (N460 million).

In this post, Naijauto places the beast beside other cars used by other world leaders to give you an idea of how far countries go to keep their leaders safe in their official cars.

1. Vladimir Putin's Aurus Senat L700 Limo
Estimated Cost: £440k (N200.7 million)

Russian President, Vladimir Putin, is one world leader who drives a sophisticated machine similar to that of the US President. His Aurus Senat L700 Limo reported to cost £440,000 (N200.7 million) can be described as a Rolls-Royce Phantom that enjoys the benefits of a military vehicle similar to that of the Beast.

Vladimir Putin's Aurus Senat L700 Limo

2. Queen Elizabeth II's Bentley State Limousine
Estimated Cost: £11m (N5 billion)

This car belonging to the Queen of England is arguably the most expensive car in the world at £11m (N5 billion). It was unveiled in 2002 in celebration of the queen’s 50th anniversary on the highly revered throne.

Despite being so expensive, the queen does not have only of the Bentley State Limousine but two in her fleet.

3. Pope Benedict’s Mercedes-Benz M-Class A.K.A The Popemobile
Estimated Cost: £400k (N182 million)

The leader of the Roman Catholic Church People Benedict drives an M-Class converted Mercedes Benz famous for its composite glass cabin. That is not all there is about the car. Conveying the head of an institution as big as the Catholic Church, understandably, it has more features. The car is proofed against bomb, and boasts of its own oxygen supply. If for any reason the Pope is attacked, the technology in the car is good enough to protect him.

4. Kim Jong-un’s Mercedes-Benz S600 (W221) Pullman Guard
Estimated Cost: £1.2 m (N547 million)

Daimler, parent company of Mercedes-Benz, still cannot place its hands on how President of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Kim Jong-un acquired his bomb-proofed Mercedes Pullman Guard. A grenade has nothing on this car; it can withstand it without a scratch. Not even several shots of hand gun or military rifle can penetrate it.

The Korean leader has not just one but three of this rare machine in his fleet. He does not need to alight if he gets pressed as there is a portable toilet situated in the car.

Recent reports from the Nigerian FRSC (Federal Road Safety Corps) show that there has been a drastic drop in the rate at which cars get stolen in the last decade. However, that doesn't negate the fact that vehicles still get missing on a weekly basis across the country. To be exact, over a thousand cars go missing annually in Nigeria. Every car owner prays that their automobile don't get counted someday. But you can't just hope without taking certain proactive measures to ensure that your vehicle is safe at all times. Therefore, here is how to make your car more secure in 8 easy steps, brought to you by Naijauto.com!

1. Install an alarm in your car

Installing a car alarm in your vehicle isn't as difficult as installing a new engine. Newer cars come with the alarm pre-installed but you can get a tech expert to fix one for you if you drive an old model automobile.

The benefits of this car alarm are numerous. It not only wakes up your neighbours when someone tries to break into your car, but it also alerts you. Secondly, no thief will be interested in stealing a car that has drawn the attention of all and sundry. The alarm might not prevent them from stealing the vehicle or valuables therein, but will definitely put any intruder off.

An intruder won't bother breaking into your car once the alarm goes off

2. Install an immobiliser

In case you've never heard, there's a system known as an immobiliser for cars. Once you have it installed in your car, it can't be driven by anyone without the specific key made for that vehicle. A thief might succeed in breaking into the car but will end up running away since the car won't move. If they even get to deactivate the immobiliser, it will still lengthen their time of unlocking it.

Hence, most car robbers rather not touch a car with an immobiliser. Cars in the UK made from the early 2000s come with this feature. You can get one installed in your Nigerian car for a few thousands of naira.

3. Get a car tracker

Car trackers have become quite popular in Nigeria. This is probably one of the reasons the rate of car theft dropped in the last 5 years around the country. You can check out some tech shops online or on major roads that carry out these car tracking system installation.

All they do is fix a transmitter in your vehicle at a hidden corner and connect it to your phone or a computer. The ease with which your car can be found is dependent on what kind of car tracker you subscribe for. There's the advanced VHF system that allows experts find your car anywhere it is in this world, even in a submarine under water. Then the common GPS type that can only find the car if it's within a given area.

4. Steering and pedal locks

Pedal locks used to be very common in the 90s. They are manual and can be spotted from the window. Once seen, a thief would normally not bother breaking into the vehicle. You can consider getting one as a means to help make your car more secure. Aside from the pedal locks, there are those for the steering wheel too. They prevent anyone from steering even the vehicle is on.

Even when the thief makes it to the cabin, with the locked steering wheel, they surrender

5. Park under lights or a CCTV camera

Asides having these security equipment installed in your vehicle, it's best to deter any potential intruder by making your car easily seen. When you go to the mall or even on your street, park under a streetlight or where lots of lights are shining. If there's a visible CCTV camera in the area, park your car directly underneath if possible. Since thieves won't like to be seen, they won't even bother breaking into the vehicle.

6. Colour your car bright and different

Nobody tries to steal car with my bright and different colour from the regular black, brown and silver colours. If there are lots of black cars in your neighborhood, spray yours white or pink. If there are white and silver cars, colour yours light blue or even red. Once the car can be easily noticed, thieves will be deterred from breaking into it.

Thieves are less likely to aim at bright and different colored cars

7. Lock your car at all times

When you park your vehicle briefly to take a leak or to quickly buy something across the road, lock the doors and windows. Anything can happen with those 60 seconds you spend outside the car. If possible, lock your doors, windows and sunroof even while driving. Anyone trying to intrude will encounter some difficulty and let you be.

8. Mark the vehicle numbers on different compartments

The final tip on how to make your car more secure is by marking the vehicle number and chassis number on other parts of the car. That way thieves won't bother stealing it. Many vehicles that get stolen end up in spare part shops. Knowing many buyers won't want to buy an auto part with a number engraved on it, will discourage anyone from stealing your vehicle.

Car Talk / Stop Attaching Too Many Things To Your Car Key! by Naijautonews: 8:20am On Jun 14, 2019
When you attach so many things to your car key, you are putting too much pressure on the ignition system. Click to see the damages you can incur because of this habit!

Naija people! Take a look at a typical Nigerian car owner car key and you will marvel at the heavy weight the ignition carries on a daily basis. Attached to this single car key are the entire household keys, nail cutter, office keys and several other things. To most car owners, it is a norm and they even see it as signature of having many properties. Naijauto does not have problem with you having many keys but it is a bad habit to attach too many keys with your car ignition key.

Having many keys attached to the ignition key will definitely put too much weight on the ignition and eventually lead to failure sooner or later. This is possible due to the power of gravitational force which will definitely have an adverse effect by pulling down the ignition anytime you use your car to ascend an uphill, when you go over bumps, when you take a sharp turn and even when you are not moving the car at all.

Always keep your car key this way to prevent the ignition from wearing out

When you do it on a regular basis, you might not know but it is eating up your ignition system little by little. By the time you attempt to turn your car ignition key to start your engine and you are unable to, you should know there is a problem with your ignition which is caused by putting too much weight on it.

Solution here is making sure you separate the car key from other keys. It wouldn’t hurt to do so and you benefit from it in the long run.

Addressing newsmen after attending a meeting which had other traffic agencies in attendance, Kazeem said that the FRSC was collaborating with the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and some security agencies in an effort to create free human and vehicular movements in the congested Apapa area.

According to the spokesman, the clearing up will not obstruct movements; commuters will be able to go about their daily activities while the work is being done.

“The clearance of the Apapa gridlock is a work in progress. A lot of work has been put in place. The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing is superintending over it to ensure that all relevant agencies especially as it concerns traffic control are mobilized,” Kazeem added.

Autos / How To Avoid Accidents On The Third-mainland Bridge In Lagos by Naijautonews: 9:14am On Jun 10, 2019
Accidents are fast becoming everyday dosage now on the Third Mainland Bridge. Yet, it might be a must you drive through there always. Check below to see the simple tips to avoid causing or involving in accidents on this way!

We are now experiencing an increase in the rate of road mishaps on the popular Lagos’s Third Mainland Bridge. It is less becoming an everyday occurrence.

Nobody would want to be involved in one but is very important to take drastic measures in avoiding these road accidents as car owners or drivers. You might be wondering how possible you could prevent these road mishaps on the Third Mainland Bridge or any similar bridges and highways in the country. Here on Naijauto are the simple ways for Lagos drivers to avoid accidents on the Third Mainland Bridge.

1. Refrain from over-speeding

Speed kills! That is the popular slogan to advice motorists against over-speeding for their safety and other road users. When you drive within the recommended limit speed for that particular highway, you are safeguarding your life, the condition of your car and other people driving around you at that point in time. Be observant of the speedometer in your dash. The speed limit for the Third Mainland Bridge is 70 km/hr.

Speed surely kills! Adhere strictly to the speed limit for that particular highway

2. Stop tailgating

When you drive too close to another vehicle, most especially vehicle ahead of you while on the highway, you are putting yourself in a serious risk of possible road mishap. Make sure you allow a distance of safety between the car in front of you and your car. Creating sufficient space would give you time to maneuver your way in case the car ahead stops abruptly on the highway.

3. Avoid sudden speed reduction

Unknowingly, there might not be good distance between your car and the one behind you. When you suddenly reduce the speed at which you are moving on the highway, it might cause the car behind you to crash heavily into your car. You could also expose your car to somersaulting when you disrupt the momentum at which your car is moving when you apply brake suddenly on high speed.

Road mishaps on the Third Mainland Bridge are mostly caused by reckless driving

4. Always check your mirror before overtaking

This habit of overtaking another car without using the safety mirrors installed in the car is prevalent among Nigerian drivers, who feel they are too familiar with road and art of driving. Regardless of your years of driving, the rear mirror is put there for a reason by the car manufacturer. Failure to use it might put you in a very bad situation on the highway. It is highly recommended you use the mirror when you plan to overtake another vehicle. Always be on the lookout for the blind spot before starting to move out.

5. Refrain from indiscriminate switching of lane

Always maintain a lane for your safety on the highway. Refrain from random change of lane while driving. If you must do so, make sure you inform other road users of your intention by using the turn signal. After which, you can increase the speed at which you are moving in the lane for acceleration without forgetting other cars using that lane. Make sure you get your car into that lane when you are absolutely certain it is safe. When you eventually get into that lane, move faster to align with the pace of other car using that lane.

Driving on the Third Mainland Bridge demands for your patience and tactful skills

Autos / What Are The Most Common Signs Of Car Scams? by Naijautonews: 8:44am On Jun 07, 2019
That car seller you want to patronize might be a scammer. Shine your eyes very well. Read up to know their tricks so you avoid car scams and don't fall prey to those fraudsters!

It is an open secret that scammers abound in Nigeria. In fact, they are everywhere. While some Nigerians are working hard to earn a living legitimately, the bad eggs among us do not want to lift a finger to do honest work. They just want to take advantage of other people, duping them of their hard earned money.

Unfortunately, scammers are making a kill in the car selling business. They are always outsmarting a good number of buyers. Well, they can only be successful with you if you give them the chance. They think they are smart? You can be smarter by being a step ahead of them. How? By knowing their written and unwritten tricks. At Naijauto.com, we are totally against scam, hence, we have listed here the most common signs of car scams to help our readers avoid them.

1. Incredible deals

Getting a car for the most affordable price is the dream of every buyer. If you could save some thousands of Naira on the purchase, you will have money left for other purchases. The moment you see a very good deal, you get excited and want to grab it before someone else will.

Such a clean car runs into millions of naira

But wait for a moment.

The seller in question is not Father Christmas. Ordinarily, he would want to make some profit from selling his/her car. So, why did he/she put it on sale at a giveaway price? If it is too good to be true, it is most likely not true.

Scammers use incredible prices to easily lure victims. To avoid this, do a research to get the market price of the car in question. While every seller may not have the same exact price, the prices should be in the same range.

2. Making advance payments

Picture this: You want to buy an item, and without even seeing it, the seller asks you to make advance payment to enable them bring the item over to you for inspection. If this does not scream SCAM, I do not know what else does.

It is totally unacceptable to make advance payments for a car you have not seen. In fact, you should not make any payments until you and the seller have finalized all transactions. If the seller cannot bring the car to a mutually agreed location for you to inspect it, he/she should keep their car, it is not by force to buy.

Meter numbers are tampered with to create false impressions

3. Urgency

Car scammers can be funny. How can you be pressurizing someone to buy something from you? Is it your money? They will give you some crazy story about how the car is high-in-demand, and everyone in their village is interested in buying it. If you do not make payments immediately, the car will not be available to you anymore.

The first thing they ought to know is that they are not the only ones selling cars in Nigeria. As a matter of fact, you can get the same car from a thousand and one other places. Do not make any commitments to buying a car unless you are fully convinced that the car meets your taste. If some other persons want to buy the car immediately, give them the go-ahead to sell it.
