We say bibile for balloon in somali |
ril19: I certainly like the way you sound bro. Pls do as you said and use the information received to benefit others.thank you! tho I'm a sis lol. I will do. |
racism against any race including black against white is still still alive and won't die but it is all just as bad as each other so long as people see colour before they see the person. Always beware of the dude/girl who mentions race when its totally irrelevant to the story." I saw a black guy and he was ..." why not just say "I saw a guy" |
vikel2104: It is not uncommon to have people coming to someone's house unannounced. Some persons don't have any problem with it but there are others who feel that the visitor should pre-inform them before coming. What you say is definitely right and manner's are important but who will tell the grannies and old aunties that they need to call before they show up to someone's house lol |
In my culture (Somali) with the older generation its almost unheard of to call or "book an appointment" (as they see it) when going to visit someone so their visits are always unannounced unless they are travelling long distances and so for their own benefit they will call and make sure your home at least to avoid a wasted trip lol. However with the younger generations or especially people in the diaspora that is most definitely dying out and so you are most likely to be made aware when your going to be visited. However unannounced visitors means you always be ready and prepared for people to drop by at any time which can be a nightmare ie Your house should always be clean and you should always have extra food. You are not allowed an off day or expect to look bad. lol Culture! |
Alot of things are done and people just follow because its the norm and not enough questions are asked. There is not a ritual or anything that is done routinely that doesn't hold some sort of significance. I'm gonna try and ask more questions and know the reason why I am doing certain things rather than just follow. I'm glad you asked this question OP and looking forward to learning something new. |
Corporal punishment should be used as a last resort when all other methods have been exhausted. I don't agree with people who say that it is right for every child and similarly with those that say it should never be used. The way I see it it depends on the child, situation and what other methods you have tried and have failed. With some children a good smack and possibly more is all that will do the job and for other more sensitive children too many smacks can do some serious harm both psychologically and emotionally. Having said that I do believe that corporal punishment is definitely ingrained within African tradition and is considered totally normal because for most of us we have grown up that way and everyone we knew was also brought up the same way however just because something feels normal doesn't mean it's right so if you have been blessed to be more open minded and see what our parents could have been possibly wrong in then we should know better. |
Alot of the practices named affect most of if not all of the countries in Africa and the fact that these practices are so wide spread and in no way are dying away makes it that much worse. |
just saaaad!!!!!!!!! |
Bigsteveg: PLEASE WHERE ARE U FROM AND HOW OLD ARE U? DONT BE OFFENDED O.I am Somali from east africa and I'm a grown woman. It's cool I am not offended. |
1miccza: "Please what's a maiden name"?na person name?A woman's family name before she is married. |
hmm the way I look at it,isn't she still her father's daughter regardless of who she is married to. maybe I have a different viewpoint because it isn't in my culture but a woman doesn't belong to her husband and rather is married to him just as he is married to her right! if he doesn't have to change his name then why should she if she does't want to? however her father is blood always has been and always will be. On the other hand culture is an amazing thing beautiful in some respect but sometimes harmful depending on whether you believe in it or not. If you believe something to be of benefit to you feel free to practice and love it however if you don't then don't let it criple or harm your being for the sake of being accepted within society. |
Awesome information Supper, thanks for the posts. I learnt alot thank you. I haven't been on the forum for a long time hence the late reply but it was a pleasant surprise to see when I first logged back on. I hope other's start posting more too Supper: Lapin é ti Négrès Kongó |
Jarus: Good, but it's actually in the interest of transparency to name names. If 2 independent people give 5k each and I just put anonymous 5k, each of the donors will be thinking I was referring to him, when I have actually pocketed one 5k and reported 1. That's why it's better to openly match names to donations. That's cool bro. Just thought I'd suggest but totally understand your point. MaashaAllah this looks like it's going really well, Alhamdulilah. May Allah reward you all for your efforts. |
*Kails*:Thanks, looking forward to it. Really?! I didn't realise you were msdarksin too. Can you tell I'm new?,lol. |

She does traditional that's been modernised (if you know what I mean) her name is Ubah fahmo and here is one of her songs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik0SP0dpvTg. Her songs are always for uplifting purposes also don't know if you've heard any ethiopian songs but this is one of my favourites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TA4KXcCxv9A this performance is at a Djibouti festival. Let me know what ya think. |

@Poster I won't speak reagarding Nigerians (I'm not Nigerian but I see the same in my own culture and other's) however the case is very much all over the developing world. It comes from a mentality that the already developed world is our role model and so emulating what they do makes us more like them! Of course it doesn't help when in the media all we see is how good and forward everything in the western world is and how poor and backward the Eastern world is. To an impressionable mind that says to be more like the west and you'll achieve what they have. All this then results in a major loss of culture and pride in their heritage. |
