In a rare twist of fate, Hajia Gambo Sawaba, the pioneer Northern Women’s Rights activist, philanthropist and politician who became famous for the love and care she showed the poor, especially women in northern Nigeria, came alive again.

A 34-year-old woman, Hauwa’u Suleiman, a mother of 13 children, was recently delivered of a set of quadruplets at the Gambo Sawaba General Hospital in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The birth of any baby, single or multiple, brings joy to parents, the immediate community and the nation. However, for a 34-year-old with 13 children from eight pregnancies consisting of multiple births, including sets of triplets and twins, her fertility seems to be getting progressively ‘better’ with each pregnancy.

While we rejoice at the new births, we are conscious of the fact that a lot seems to be wrong here. The husband is a driver and we doubt that his income can conveniently cater for 17 children.

Even if the wife is employed or doing her own business, 17 children are a handful and she cannot possibly combine taking care of the children with any other work.


What this situation means is that the man has to struggle to feed, provide shelter and all other necessities of life for the family.


Every child belongs to the state and as such care must be taken to make sure that each child gets its rights from the governments and the parents as well.

It is exactly for this reason, and to give each child the best nurture, education and healthcare, that most nations have policies to regulate how many children each couple can have.

Some countries introduce incentives like child support and scholarships for a certain number of children.

These parents have brought 17 other children to the world, and with their limited resources cannot effectively cater for all of them.

We might rhetorically ask, what next? Being Northern Muslims, the almajiri system might be an attractive option, so some of the kids might be sent off to the clerics, and the clerics in turn would send them into the streets, making them vulnerable targets to recruiters for all sorts of social ills.

They might find outside their houses more comfortable because the parents cannot truly cater for them. These parents might inadvertently be contributing to the number of social miscreants because they can neither give adequate emotional nor provide all the necessary needs of growing children.

Today, Nigeria is the poverty capital of the world for a reason, the population does not match with viable economic productivity.


Government cannot take care of the population because the resources are not just there. The illiteracy level is too high and as such most individuals do not understand that having too many children is a problem for both parents and the state.

Early marriage for girls is another reason for too many children. For a 34-year-old to have had 17 children shows she might not have spent enough time schooling.

Hauwa’u might not be aware of her reproductive rights and the fact that she can actually control the number of children she can have, based on her resources.

The husband too might be ignorant of any form of family planning. This is the time for governments at all levels to begin massive education for the citizens and the healthcare sector equipped well enough for citizen education about reproductive health and population control. Citizens must be educated about responsible parenthood.

The parochial idea that children are never to be counted is a very myopic and delusional social conditioning that encourages population growth in a century that has all the education and science that help parents plan for more manageable number of children.

There must be a sustained and well planned citizen enlightenment backed with good education and healthcare if Nigeria is to develop along with its children.

According to eyewitness, Nigerian lady fell down from bike, left with a fracture skull after a policeman was chasing the bikeman.

International Police (INTERPOL) Nigeria, has confirmed the arrest of Raymond Igbalode a.k.a. Hushpuppi in Dubai.

Rumor of his arrest first hit the internet in the early hours of Wednesday, June 10, 2020. Commissioner of Police (CP) INTERPOL, Garba Umar, has now confirmed his arrest.

In a chat with #TheNation, he said: “It is true that Hushpuppi was arrested by the INTERPOL. We are currently working on bringing him to Nigeria to face charges of fraud.

The Lagos state police command says it arrested an inspector over the death of his colleague.

In a statement on Sunday, Bala Elkana, Lagos police public relations officer, said Monday Gabriel, the inspector, went berserk and shot sporadically leading to the death of Felix Okago, a sergeant.

He said Gabriel was transferred from Abuja to a federal government facility in Ikoyi, Lagos, on a special duty.

The police spokesman said the incident which happened around 4:30am left several other persons wounded.

He said the inspector was arrested while trying to escape through the third mainland bridge.

Elkana said investigation has commenced into the incident as the police inspector is undergoing medical examination having “presented signs of depression”.

“On 31/5/2020 at about 0430 hours, Area A Command received a distress call that one Inspector Monday Gabriel from No 21 Police Mobile Force Squadron Abuja, on Special duty in a Federal Government facility in Ikoyi Lagos, went berserk and started shooting sporadically,” he said.

“One Sergeant Felix Okago who was on Special duty with the Inspector, died from the gunshot injuries while others escaped unhurt.

“In an attempt to escape, he took a patrol van and headed towards third mainland bridge, shooting as he was escaping. He was intercepted by Policemen from Bariga Division along Akoka, disarmed and handcuffed. The rifle and vehicle were recovered.

“The corpse of the deceased Sergeant is deposited in the mortuary for autopsy while the Inspector is taken to Police Hospital for medical examination as he presented signs of mental depression.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of investigation to take over the investigation. The Command deeply condoles with the family of the fallen colleague who paid the supreme price in service to his fatherland.”

There has been a rise in cases of policemen killing citizens in Lagos.

On Friday, the state police command arrested two officers over the death of Tina Ezekwe, a 16-year-old girl.

Last week, the command announced the arrest of Okoro Charles, an inspector attached to Ikotun division, for allegedly killing Fatai Oladipupo, a resident.

In March 2019, Kolade Johnson, a football fan, was killed during a raid by the anti-cultism unit of the Lagos police command.

Kolade was hit by a stray bullet when men of the anti-cultism fired shots to disperse a crowd in Mangoro area of Lagos.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reconstitution of the board of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

According to a statement by Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president, the reconstitution comes after the expiration of the term of the board members appointed in 2016.

Members of the new board are Mohammed Lawal (north-west), Tajudeen Umar (north-east), Adamu Mahmood Attah (north-central), Magnus Abe (south-south), Stephen Dike (south-east), and Pius Akinyelure (south west).

Akinyelure, former national vice chairman of the All Progressives Congress, south-west zone, returns as the representative of his zone.

The new board will be in place for three years.

Adesina’s statement did not state who will serve as the board’s chairman.

Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, former minister of state for petroleum resources, served as the board chairman from 2016.

He was replaced by John Asuquo Thomas, who served as alternate chairman until Timipre Sylva was appointed as minister of state.

However, Sylvia has not been officially announced as the board chairman.

Thomas was the first managing director of the Eleme (Indorama) Petrochemical Company where he led the team that negotiated the financing of the Eleme Project.

He also served as NNPC GMD and voluntarily retired in 1992.

Dino Melaye, former senator representing Kogi west, says the report of COVID-19 in Kogi state is “real and authentic”.

On Wednesday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced 389 new COVID-19 cases in the country and two were in Kogi.

But the state rejected the results, insisting it is COVID-19 free.

Kingsley Fanwo, commissioner for information, in an interview on Channel Television’s Politics Today, described the cases reported in the state as “beautiful fraud”.

But in a statement, Tai Ejibunu, obatebise of Oweland, had said the index patient identified as Ahmad Ejibunu, chief imam of Kabba, may have been infected from within the state.

Melaye in a statement on Saturday said he knows one of the COVID-19 patients from Kabba.

“I want to announce that the Covid-19 case in Kogi is real and authentic and cannot understand why any responsible government will want to deny and invariably kill her citizens,” he said.

“One of the cases is from Kabba and the victim is personally known to me. I cannot be part of those who will play politics with the lives of my people.

“COVID-19 is real but not a death sentence, if handled early enough. Family members of the Kabba victim who got a referral to Abuja from federal medical centre in Lokoja and all those who had contact with him should please surrender themselves for a test so as to curtail the spread.

“Kogi State government must come down from her imaginary high horse and start contact tracing to help curtail the spread. It is illogical to think we will be free with our proximity to affected states.

“God will hear our cry and heal our land. God bless Okun land! God bless Kogi west! God bless Kogi State.”

The Federal government has withdrawn the examination malpractice charges filed against the former governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

Recall that during the heat of the Osun state governorship election campaign in 2018, Adeleke and one of his relatives, Sikiru Adeleke, were accused of engaging in examination malpractice.

Ademola and Sikiru were accused of impersonation, registering as students of Ojo-Aro Community Grammar School, Ojo-Aro, Osun State to enable them to sit for the National Examinations Council (NECO) examination of June/July 2017.

They were later arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja in October 2018 along with Alhaji Aregbesola Mufutau (the school principal), Gbadamosi Thomas Ojo (registrar) and Dare Samuel Olutope, a teacher in the school. The other three defendants were accused of aiding the commission of the alleged offence.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Thursday, May 28, the prosecution lawyer, Simon Lough said the state has amended the charge to exclude Adeleke, in view of his continued absence in court. Adeleke has failed to attend court since last year when he was granted permission, by the trial judge, Justice Inyang Ekwo, to travel to the United States on medical grounds.

The Nation reports that lawyers to the defendants, led by Alex Izinyon (SAN) did not object to the prosecution’s decision to amend its charge. They however disagreed with the prosecution on the appropriate order to be made; whether Adeleke should be simply discharged, based on the withdrawal of the charge against him, or whether he should be discharged and acquitted.

Justice Ekwo has fixed ruing on the issue for today Friday, May 29.

A landlord in Ghana has been arrested for allegedly shooting his tenant who refused to vacate his house after he ordered him to.

Facebook user, Blessing Naana Ansah-Senkyire shared photos of the arrested suspect at the police station.

She revealed that the landlord who was angry that her brother, Kobby didn’t finish packing on the day he was asked to vacate the property, took a gun and shot him while still in his room.

Kobby reportedly died instantly.

She wrote:

“Yesterday this man shot and killed my brother at ofankor. Mr landlord who is a disappointed bugar, you won’t go free. No one will bail you out for taking a life.
“He was asked to vacate his room yesterday but couldn’t finished packing so he wanted to live today and the landlord got angry pick a gun at him why he still in his room.. Then he shot him.”

Blessing Naana Ansah-Senkyire also shared a copy of the tenancy agreement which showed that her brother’s rent expired on the day he was shot.

She wrote in another post;
“This is the proof that my brother rent expired this month 24th may 2020. The murderer was only a witnessed and son to the landlord who is the mother.. Then on 25th he shot him dead. How on earth can human be this wicked?… .. The mother claimed the son cannot Be in jail. But we live to see. Now he’s been taken to prison for two weeks before the case shall be heard.”

A man allegedly rejected by the Isolo General Hospital in Lagos State over fears of being a COVID-19 patient has reportedly died.

Nairafame reports that the deceased, identified simply as Joel, was refused treatment by the hospital.

Joel was said to have slumped on Sunday while playing football and was rushed to the hospital but he was allegedly refused treatment on the fear that he might be a coronavirus patient.

A family friend of the victim, identified simply as Amaka, who narrated the incident on Twitter, alleged that the nurses on duty claimed that they were busy and refused to attend to Joel.

She tweeted,
“The medical system failed my family friend today and I’ll never get over it.
“He was said to be playing football in the field this morning and slumped and stopped breathing, he was immediately rushed to the Isolo general hospital in other to get attended to fast, getting there, they refused to let him in because they said they don’t know if he has Coronavirus!
“His family members kept begging and begging because time was running and he wasn’t getting any better, he was still not breathing…The nurses still insisted on not attending to him, because according to them, they have their plates full. They had to return him to the car and resulted in prayers.
“In tears, his elder sister still went back in and requested to see any doctor on duty, after so much argument a doctor came out, heard the whole story from the nurses on duty and without taking a look at him in the car or bringing him in to check him out, the doctor then certified him dead and asked them to transfer him to the mortuary. His mother collapsed on the spot…This life is so unfair.
“Bro Joel like I will always call him, you will forever be missed, I have known you to be the calmest and humble person ever since I was a toddler, it was so unfair for you to pass on just like this, but God knows best. Keep sleeping on till we meet again.”

When contacted, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Godwin Akhaboa, who stated that the facility was not in the habit of rejecting patients, said the victim was brought in dead.

“There are parameters to look at before certifying a patient dead and no doctor will say a patient is dead without checking those parameters. It’s never done; no nurse or doctor will do that. The patient had a cardiac arrest on a football field and he was brought in dead,” Akhaboa said.
