Politics / DSS Released From Jail, Rearrested Immediately By DSS by nairalandaddict: 4:41am On Dec 31, 2015
Operatives of the Department of the State Security Service have re-arrested a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd).

He was re-arrested at the gate of the Kuje Prison, Abuja, while he was about leaving the prison after meeting the bail conditions set for him by a Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja.

The DSS took custody of Dasuki shortly after perfecting the third bail granted him by Justice Peter Affem after two other courts had done same.

Counsel for Dasuki , Mr Ahmed Raji (SAN), accorthing to TheNews.NG sources the former NSA had met all the bail conditions given by Justice Affem but regretted that the court order was not obeyed by the operatives of the DSS.

He said, “That’s correct, he was re-arrested by the operatives of the DSS and whisked away to an unknown destination.

“He met the bail conditions set for him by the judge, but as he was stepping outside the prison, he was arrested.”

Justice Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court also in Abuja had granted the ex-NSA bail on November 3 in the charges of unlawful possession of firearms, but the bail was on November 4 scuttled by the DSS who laid siege to his Asokoro Residence and placed him under house arrest.

The claim of the security agents was that Dasuki was being investigated on another matter.

He was later arraigned before justice Yusuf Baba of the Abuja High court on breach of trust an was granted bail but which was also refused to be obeyed by the security operatives.

Dasuki was also moved to another high court of Justice Affem who also admitted him on bail on the grounds that the offence was a bailable one.

Raji who perfected the bail condition of his client disclosed that the actions of the security agents was an affront to the rule of law under democracy.

The lawyer appealed to the authorities of the security agents and the federal government to respect court order and allow Dasuki to enjoy the bail granted him by the court.

Dasuki is facing two sets of criminal charges involving alleged diversion of about N45bn meant for arms procurement along with others before two judges of the FCT High Court, Abuja.

Nairaland / General / Surgeons Find Huge Hairball In Girl’s Stomach by nairalandaddict: 3:10pm On Dec 30, 2015
Surgeons in a Southern Kazakhstan hospital were stunned after they pulled out a massive hairball from the stomach of an 11-year-old girl.

She was taken to hospital after suffering from a severe stomach ache and loss of appetite.

Even a glass of water proved too much for the girl.

The Daily Star of UK reported that it was not until she was taken to the hospitals in the city of Taraz, southern Kazakhstan, that the bizarre discovery was made.

Doctors found a huge ball of hair measuring 17cm across the stomach and around 35cm into the girl’s bowel.

Her parents said they had spotted their daughter chewing her long hair, but were unaware she was swallowing it.

A similar case was reported by another UK news website, dailymail.com in May 2015.

A five-year-old girl unable to eat was found to have a large hairball blocking her digestive system. The girl came to a hospital in Adelaide, Australia, suffering from abdominal pain that had become steadily worse over a few weeks and also complained of an increasingly poor appetite.

Scans confirmed she had a bulk of hair in her stomach, which made it look as though the organ was solid and full of soft tissue. They also showed a large lesion in her stomach and small bowel.

She was diagnosed with Rapunzel syndrome, a rare condition in which a hairball (called a trichobezar) is found in the stomach, with its tail in the colon.

Rapunzel syndrome is a condition where ingested hair collects in the patient’s stomach and can cause severe problems.

Nairaland / General / Newborn Baby Survives After Falling Through Train Toilet by nairalandaddict: 2:58pm On Dec 30, 2015
A baby delivered inside the lavatory of an Indian train slipped through the toilet bowl to fall on rail tracks but survived.

Police officer, Anil Sirohi said on Wednesday in New Delhi that a pregnant woman had labour pains while travelling on Monday on the train in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

He said that the 23-year-old went to the toilet and delivered a baby girl that slipped out and onto the tracks from the train.

“Passengers on the train heard her cries for help and pulled the emergency chain to bring the train to a halt.

“Moments later they ran toward the baby and found it was alive,’’
he said.

The officer said that the railway police moved both mother and child to a nearby hospital.
Railway official, Chandra Mohan-Jindal, said it was a miracle that the newborn girl survived after falling on concrete boulders of the track from such a height.

“Fortunately the train was not at a great speed as it had just begun its journey from the railway station.

Mohan-Jindal said that it was the second such incident in India this year.

“In February, a baby born in a train toilet survived a similar fall onto the tracks in the Rajasthan state.

Nairaland / General / Voodoo?! New Couple Receives #1000 Note And Stone As Wedding Gift by nairalandaddict: 12:35pm On Dec 30, 2015

Scary, This was received by a couple as wedding gift -stones placed on a N1000 note in a box. It was shared on Facebook and has got many riled up due to its awkward nature. Some say this has a spiritual undertone while others argue that the person who donated the gift was only trying to add weight to the box -hence the stones. If you are given this on your wedding day, what will you do??

Crime / Yuletide: 783 Traffic Offenders Tried At FRSC Mobile Court by nairalandaddict: 11:39am On Dec 28, 2015
Mobile courts set up the Federal Road Safety Corps for end-of-the-year patrols have so far convicted 783 traffic offenders, the News Agency of Nigeria has reported.

The FRSC said in a statement that 878 traffic offenders were arraigned before the 200 mobile courts it set up ahead of the Yuletide.

It said that while 783 of them were convicted, 95 others were discharged.

The Corps Marshall, Boboye Oyeyemi, had said two days before Christmas that the corps lost 204 personnel to hit-and-run drivers in the course of duty within the last two years.

The Corps Marshall, who disclosed this at a press briefing on the “Ember months operations” in Abuja, explained that the deaths of the corps personnel highlighted the sacrifices of the agency in ensuring that road fatality was reduced to the barest minimum in the country.

Oyeyemi, who gave the assurance that the FRSC was committed to ensuring safety of travellers during the Yuletide, warned traffic offenders that they would be punished.

He said, “Let me warn would-be deviants that the corps will not tolerate anything short of conformity to road traffic regulations because it is through this that each person can drive to save a life and make the nation enjoyable and fulfilling for all.

“Those with negative mindset should be ready to interface with the numerous mobile courts that will be in place along all corridors. They can be sure that justice will sort them out. We have made sacrifices to ensure safety on the highways. In 2015, we lost 88 personnel, which when compared to 2014, is an improvement because we lost 116 officers in 2014.”
