Nairaland / General / Governor Wike Blocks DSS Attempt To Arrest Judge In Rivers by nairalandaddict: 10:42am On Oct 08, 2016

Governor Nyesome Wike in the early hours of today, October 7, 2016 stopped an alleged attempt by men of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Police to abduct a Judge at his number 35/84 B residence, Forces Avenue, Port Harcourt, TheNews.NG has gathered

The failed alleged abduction was led by Mr Tosin Ajayi, Rivers state director of the DSS and Rivers state Police Commissioner, Mr Francis Odesanya.

According sources at the scene, the security operatives blocked the entrance of the residence of the Federal High Court judge at about 1am on Saturday morning, claiming that they were acting on orders from above.

However, addressing journalists, Rivers state police commissioner, Francis Odesanya said the two security agencies were at the scene because they received privileged information.

Odesanya claimed he was at the scene as a peace maker. He declined comments on why the Police joined the DSS to abduct a serving Federal High Court judge.

In an interview with journalists at the scene of the failed illegal abduction of a Federal High Court judge by the Police and DSS, Governor Wike said it will not be under his watch that security agencies wiĺl be allowed to entrench needless impunity.

He declared that their reckless action portends danger to the nation’s democracy, noting that he is convinced that President Buhari is not aware of the level of impunity being perpetrated by Federal Securiy agencies.

Governor Wike stated that whatever the situation, the rule of law must prevail in a democratic setting.

He said if the security agencies had a lawful directive to implement, they must follow due process .

According to him: “Not under my watch wiĺl I allow this kind of impunity to take place. That is why we are here. I don’t know which judge they were detailed to abduct. I didn’t bother myself to know which judge. All I am interested in is that, at this level, it is not allowed.

“He is not a criminal and he is not an armed robber. If the person has committed an offence, invite him. It is only when he refuses to honour the invitation that you can adopt this commando style.

Number 35 Forces Avenue after a failed attempt by the police to abduct a Federal High Court judge by 1am on saturday 8th October, 2016.

“The Commissioner of Police is here, the Director of DSS is here. Their operatives cocked their guns and threatened to shoot me. I have never seen that before. Again , this is to tell you what we are facing . We know that more will come. For us in this state, we shall continue to resist it.”

Governor Wike added: “It doesn’t matter what it will cost. When you talk about liberty, sacrifices must be made. We are not trying to stop an arrest. All we are saying is that things must be done decently and in line with the rule of law.

“Rivers State is under siege. For you to see a governor out at this time of the day, something is wrong. A siege is an understatement. If this type of thing happens next time, the people wiĺl resist it to the last”.

The governor stressed: “They are trying to do something funny in this state, probably to declare a state of emergency.

Celebrities / “65 Pastors Approved My Marriage To Foluke Daramola” – Kayode Salako by nairalandaddict: 8:40am On Oct 08, 2016
I wasn’t expecting to marry a perfect woman. I have decided to be her father, her boss, her friend, and a teacher. When I was getting married, I told everyone in my family to go all out and make inquiries if she is my wife. I consulted about 65 pastors before I made up my mind on her.”

Who apologises when there is a misunderstanding?

Foluke, the mother of two replied, “I was in a marriage before, so making amends when there is a wrong is no problem. Most of the time, I say, ‘I’m sorry,’ it does not cost anything to apologise. If not given, it can degenerate to anything. Fortunately, he does not suffer from inferiority complex. The kind of upbringing I have is contentment and love. I want to have my husband, children and run my home. When we were about getting married, my father-in-law was skeptical and some of his siblings. I made everybody realise that acting is a profession, which I happen to find myself.”

Kayode said, “Foluke is stubbornly reasonable but quick to accept her fault. She kneels down and apologises and sometimes, sheds tears to show she is indeed sorry. I love her very much, she is like my baby and I don’t fail to tell her when she is wrong. Our quarrel doesn’t last an hour. We are not in this marriage by accident but by the will of God.”

So, what makes a marriage successful?

Kayode tendered, “Maintain that channel of communication. Discuss it all because when you don’t tell her she might not know. Secondly, understand each other. Know your wife and who she is. You must also be friends. Also, a man should learn to overlook especially if you are married to a celebrity. I read a book where a writer said nothing is a problem, only thinking makes it so. If you attach meanings to every issue, marriage heads for the rocks. Not all the time should you overlook but when you want to make a complaint let it be in the confines of your bedroom. Let the man be mentally mature too and be confident in himself. Also, learn to share. A man should not allow his wife do all the chores and he wants to share her money with her, it fails. She is not your slave, she is a human being that deserves happiness.”

Foluke said, “The woman is motivated by what she hears and the man, what he sees. Women make the mistake of not spicing up their marriage. What are those things that attracted him to you? Then, don’t stop. He loves my legs and I wear short skirts at home for him. You have to put your man on his toes. Read books and know what excite your marriage. Also, men don’t tell their wives ‘I love you.’ Pay her compliments. I wash his undies, cook special diet. In fact, celebs go the extra mile to make a marriage work. We try to pamper, make men feel special and want homes. We need confident men. Take care of your man. Say, ‘I love you’. My husband tells me every morning, ‘I love you.’

Nairaland / General / Archbishop Tutu Opts For Assisted Death by nairalandaddict: 7:56pm On Oct 07, 2016
85-years-old Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa. Twitter photo.
South Africa’s Archbishop Desmond Tutu has said in a birthday message in the Washington Post that he wants the option of assisted death.

In the op-ed he says: “I have prepared for my death and have made it clear that I do not wish to be kept alive at all costs. I hope I am treated with compassion and allowed to pass on to the next phase of life’s journey in the manner of my choice.

Dying people should have the right to choose how and when they leave Mother Earth. I believe that, alongside the wonderful palliative care that exists, their choices should include a dignified assisted death.”

Quoting Washington Post, Africa Review said, he announced the reversal of his lifelong opposition to assisted dying in 2014.

The archibishop’s announcement come as no surprise in South Africa.

The issue of euthanasia or assisted death has divided the nation for a period of time.

Last year the High Court in the capital Pretoria ruled in favour of terminally ill cancer patient Robin Strasham-Ford who had applied for assisted death.

He had only two weeks left and wanted the law to be amended so that he would have assisted death without the prospect of prosecution.

The law used to be very clear – any doctors who help patients die could face prison time of up to 14 years.

The country has no legislation for euthanasia, while the constitution protects the right to life.

On 7th of Sept, 1986, Desmond Tutu becomes the first black leader of the Anglican church of South Africa

He marks his 85th birthday on Friday, October 7.

Nairaland / General / Update: Mathew Kills 339 In Haiti by nairalandaddict: 12:31pm On Oct 07, 2016

Haiti people carrying a dead person for burial. New York Times Photo
The number of people killed by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti has risen to over 300, according to a tally by Reuters.

The deaths came mainly in villages making contact with the outside world days after the cyclone ripped through the impoverished nation’s picturesque western peninsula.

With the numbers rising quickly, different government agencies and committees differed on the total death toll. A Reuters tally of deaths reported by civil protection officials at a local level showed the storm killed at least 339 people.

“Several dozen” were killed in the coastal town of Les Anglais in Sud Department, said Louis Paul Raphael, the central government’s representative in the region. Inland in nearby Chantal, the toll rose to 90 late in the evening, the town’s mayor said.

In 2010, a magnitude 7 earthquake wrecked Port-au-Prince, killing upward of 200,000 people. However, the impact of this tragedy, has been felt most in a remote but populated region, far from the capital’s support.

“We have nothing left to survive on, all the crops have gone, all fruit trees are down, I don’t have a clue how this is going to be fixed,” said Marc Soniel Noel, the deputy mayor of Chantal.

Matthew is the strongest hurricane in the Caribbean since Felix in 2007 and was closing in on Florida as a Category 4 cyclone, the second strongest on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale. Four people were killed over the weekend in the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti.

The devastation in Haiti prompted authorities to postpone a presidential election scheduled for Sunday.

Many victims were killed by falling trees, flying debris and swollen rivers when Matthew hit on Tuesday with winds of 145 miles per hour (230 kph).

Most of the fatalities were in towns and fishing villages around the western end of Tiburon peninsula in Haiti’s southwest, a region of white Caribbean beaches and rivers backed by hills.

The storm passed directly through the peninsula, driving the sea inland and flattening homes on Monday and Tuesday.

FLEEING IN PANIC

Les Anglais was the first to be hit by Matthew and has since been out of contact. The mayor told Reuters just before the storm hit that people were fleeing their houses in panic as the sea surged into town.

A few miles south in Port-a-Piment village, Mayor Jean-Raymond Pierre-Louis said 25 people were killed. Another 24 were killed in the village of Roche-a-Bateau further south.

In Grand Anse Department, also on the storm’s destructive path but on the other side of the peninsula, 38 more lost their lives.

Earlier on Thursday, a meeting of emergency workers including representatives from the government, the United Nations and international aid agencies said 283 had been killed. Reuters attended the meeting.

In one public hospital in Les Cayes, a coffee and vetiver exporting port on Haiti’s Tiburon peninsula, most doctors had not shown up to work since they took shelter as the storm hit. Food and water were scarce in shelters.

Poverty, weak government and precarious living conditions for many of its citizens make Haiti particularly vulnerable to natural disasters. International aid has at times made things worse.

Following the 2010 earthquake, U.N. peacekeepers inadvertently introduced cholera to Haiti, killing at least 9,000 people and infecting hundreds of thousands more.

The Pan American Health Organization said on Thursday it was preparing for a possible cholera surge in Haiti after the hurricane because flooding was likely to contaminate water supplies.

In Les Cayes’ tiny airport, windows were blown out and the terminal roof was mostly missing, although the landing strip was not heavily damaged.

“The runway is working. In the hours and days to come, we can receive humanitarian flights,” said Sergot Tilis, the information officer and runway agent for the airport.

Celebrities / Baba Suwe’s Health Deteriorating by nairalandaddict: 1:32am On Oct 06, 2016
Popular Nigerian actor, Babatunde Omidina, popularly known as “Baba Suwe”, is sick

The health of “Baba Suwe’’ deteriorating, said Producer and Actor Yomi Fabiyi who tried to reach out for assistance.

Fabiyi said on Wednesday in his Instagram page that since an encounter with officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), “Baba Suwe’s’’ sagged.

Baba Suwe was arrested by NDLEA at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on allegation of drug trafficking, but was later released after screening and was exonerated.

He later approached the courts for the restoration of his fundamental human rights and was granted general damages of N25 million against NDLEA.

The money has not been paid by the Agency, Fabiyi said.

Fabiyi said accused NDLEA officials of torturing Baba Suwe in the encounter and had since then been sick.

He appealed to stakeholders in the entertainment industry to rally round to rescue Baba Suwe from the undisclosed ailment.

“On Baba Suwe, I am calling on all senior colleagues in the entertainment world especially those close to Baba Suwe because I don’t have everyone’s contact to please reachout to him ASAP (As Soon As Possible).’’

“The torture done on him by NDLEA is vastly damaging his health at an alarming rate.

“He told me he no longer feel comfortable since that episode. Baba Suwe is a widower, he can hardly walk properly as I speak, let alone go to film.

“How will he feed and take care of the children Aunty Moladun left behind?

“This is an A-List Entertainer and this conspiracy of silence gives me MENTAL AGONY on my part, I don’t want to speak when it may be too late, I won’t forgive myself.’’

Fabiyi said Baba Suwe told him that NDLEA official inserted a long pipe was inserted through his anus and was detained for too long because he was randomly suspected like every normal person.

“In my opinion, only lazy, ill-trained, unfit and uncivilised officers torture in the name of investigation. Torture is criminal and sinful. If this accusation is found to be true by independent investigators, it shouldn’t go unpunished.”

Aside the N25 million NDLEA was directed to pay to Baba Suwe by the court, the Agency was also directed to tender open apology.

Politics / Tinubu, Oyegun Meet Face-to-face by nairalandaddict: 7:58am On Oct 05, 2016
National leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and party chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun met face-to-face today in Abuja, at the launch of a book in honour of President Muhammadu Buhari.

And the two leaders could not avoid a handshake, with businessman, Alhaji Isa Funtua, playing a mediatory role of sort.

Tinubu, Oyegun in a handshake in Abuja today. With them is chairman Bullet Construction, Alhaji Isa Funtua.

Tinubu on 26 September lashed out at Oyegun over his handling of the dispute arising from the primary election to pick the governorship candidate of the party in Ondo state.

Oyegun was said to have vetoed a recommendation by the National Working Committee of the Party calling for a new election. Tinubu was angry that Oyegun had refused to toe the democratic path, for which he railed at the 77 year old man.

Oyegun, who was then in Edo state for the governorship election, said he would not respond to Tinubu’s rage as he wanted his party to focus on the election.

“We don’t want to lose focus and I know Asiwaju also wants us to win because we all have worked hard for this,” Mr. Oyegun said.

“But may be after Edo elections, after we must have emerged victorious, we may speak on some of the issues raised, ” he said in Benin.

His party won the election on 28 September.

Now that the election is over and now that there has been a handshake across ‘the aisle’, will Oyegun hold his fire?

The election in Ondo state will take place on 26 November. The party has up to 25 October to make amends over the party’s candidate for the election.

Celebrities / King Sunny Ade Opens Up On His Romance With Onyeka Onwenu by nairalandaddict: 12:24pm On Sep 10, 2016

Legendary afro-Juju sensation, King Sunny Ade, has dismissed insinuations that he dated veteran singer, Onyeka Onwenu in the past.

There were insinuations in certain quarters that the duo were engaged in a romantic relationship following the release of “wait for me” years back.

However, the afro-juju maestro popularly called KSA by his fans, during a press conference on his 70th birthday, dismissed the claims, saying there was nothing between him and Onwenu.

According to the legendary musician, the song, “Wait for me”, was just a gimmick to drive home a message for a healthy relationship among the youth back then.

He said, “I didn’t have any crush on Onyeka then. Even before that song, we had recorded some songs together. She was (and still is) just a colleague. She is a good woman. We did that song just for us to teach the young people the essence of having a healthy relationship.

“It is just by his grace that He has made it possible for me to live up to this age. He alone has given me strength to perform. I love what I do and that is why I can never be tired. I came back from the US and I was told I had to perform somewhere and I went. I am never tired and my age will not slow me down.”

Nairaland / General / Shiites 'block Highway' In Kaduna, Demand El-zakzaky's Release by nairalandaddict: 10:27am On Jul 16, 2016
Shia members in the northern part of Nigeria seem to have resorted self-help to secure the release of their detained leader.

The Federal government has sent embattled leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El Zakzaky, to France for treatment of gun shot

Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, the body of Shiites in the country, have blocked the Zaria-Kaduna expressway, to protest against the prolonged detention of their leader, Ibrahim El Zakzaky, according to Premium Times.

Zakzaky has been detained since last year, December following a bloody confrontation with the Nigerian army which reportedly led to the death of over 300 Shiite members.

On the road blockage today, a source said “thousands” of Shiites blocked the expressway on Friday, denying road users passage.

The source said security operatives have been deployed to the scene. A spokesperson for the Shi’as, Musa Ibrahim, confirmed to the online news platform that he had received report that “some of our members” embarked on procession today, Friday, and were “attacked by thugs”.

“A report just reached my desk,” said Mr. Ibrahim. “Some of members embarked on peaceful procession today. But they were attacked by thugs at Maraban Jos (along Kaduna-Zaria expressway.”

He added that he was informed that the police intervened in the fight “but I don’t know whether there is casualty”.The procession is aimed at driving home their grievances to ensure Zakzaky's release.

The report is still developing.

Edo state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, the Edo state governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Godwin Obaseki and others were spotted eating corn publicly. They had patronized a roadside seller during their campaign to market women ahead of the September 10, 2016 governorship election in Edo State.
Hmm…they should have stayed somewhere to eat before setting out, instead of eating corn on the streets.
