A Nigerian couple living in Rochdale, U.K., has been jailed for a string of child abuse and sexual assault.

Shola Ogundare, a 49-year-old male, has been jailed for 15 years after appearing at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court on Friday, May 15, whilst Olwafunmilayo Emmanuel, 35, has been jailed for 4 years for her role in the crimes.

In July 2018, police were made aware that a young girl had reported being abused by Shola Ogundare, 49, and Olwafunmilayo Emmanuel, 35.

An investigation was launched and officers established that the girl had been physically and sexually abused by the man named Ogundare and physically abused by Olwafunmilayo Emmanuel. Enquiries also established that a young boy had been physically abused by Ogundare and Emmanuel.

Ogundare and Emmanuel were arrested and taken into police custody for questioning. They were subsequently charged and pleaded not guilty.

Following a one-week trial, a jury found Ogundare guilty of attempted rape of a child, sexual assault by penetration of a child, sexual assault by touching of a child, causing a child to watch a sexual act, cruelty to a person under 16 and four counts of assault.

Ogundare was sentenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court to 15 years in prison, while Emmanuel was found guilty of four counts of cruelty to a person under 16, and sentenced to four years in prison.

Detective Constable Russell Clarke, of GMP’s Rochdale district, said: "First and foremost I would like to commend the victims for their strength in seeking help and disclosing what had happened to them. Both children have demonstrated incredible courage throughout our investigation and this trial, especially considering their age.

"Abuse of this kind often has a long-lasting impact on victims but I sincerely hope that they can move forward with their lives – free from the fear of being abused.

"Ogundare subjected these children to a prolonged campaign of abuse. Under the pretence of punishment, he sexually abused one of the victims to satisfy his most repulsive desires. Throughout this investigation, he has shown no remorse and the things he has said to try to evade justice have been beyond comprehension.

"Emmanuel also subjected the children to physical abuse and has also shown no remorse. She has repeatedly defended Ogundare and tried to discredit the victims.

"I hope today’s result sends a clear message to members of the public and offenders alike that police officers will do everything in their power to see justice done."

Governor Nasir El-Rufai engaged in bants last night while reacting to a video shared on Twitter by popular comedian Teju Babyface.

In the short video from a 2010 interview with the comedian, Governor El-Rufai said he used to be secretary-general of the short people association. He also shared some challenges he had before getting over not being tall enough.

The Kaduna state Governor said in the interview;

“I used to be the secretary-general… at a point at my teenage years, in my early 20s I had big issues with my height because you know all the pretty girls turn out to be taller than me.

“But with time, I got over it. I managed to get a pretty and intelligent woman to marry who was an inch shorter than me.”

Reacting to a video of the interview after it was shared by Teju Babyface, Governor El-Rufai jokingly described Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as the current chairman of the Nigerian Association of Short People.

He tweeted;

Pastor Tunde Bakare, Senior pastor of Citadel Global Community Church (CGCC) - formerly known as The Latter Rain Assembly, has called on Nigerian church leaders to offer their church halls as Isolation centers to government as the nation continues to battle the Coronavirus pandemic.

Bakare's advice comes days after Bishop David Oyedepo and Chris Oyakhilome kicked against the federal government's Continuous ban on religious gatherings.

Speaking during an online service today, May 10 the former Vice Presidential candidate, said he has already donated his church's facilities to the Lagos state government and a private residence in Abeokuta to the government to use as Isolation centers.

''I recommend that our church halls be made available to government as Isolation centers and those of us who could afford it should be there to support the government.'' he said

A 30-year-old man identified as James Samuel, hanged himself in a classroom at Government Secondary School Gurku, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa.

The body of the deceased was discovered on Friday, by one of the residents in the area, who is also a police officer serving in Abuja, who quickly reported the matter to the Gurku Police Outpost.

An old picture of the deceased and one of a woman believed to be his mother were found at the scene.

The body of the late James Samuel was brought down in presence of the police and taken out of the government facility by family members.

James' father, Chief Samuel who is the Tiv community leader in Gurku, reportedly wept profusely when he arrived the scene of the incident with his other children.

Speaking about his deceased son, Chief Samuel said;

“My late son attended Government Secondary school Gurku, he was a farmer, welder and a traditional drummer,”

"He was popular among his peers. He is a Tiv, but understands Gbagyi, Jaba, Hausa and Gwandara tribes. I learnt that this is the first suicide in the history of Gurku land and that it is taboo here.” he added.

An angry mob on Saturday night killed three suspected members of a notorous gang, Shila boys, in Yola, capital of Adamawa State.

The boys, who allegedly specialized in dispossessing people of their belongings in streets, had operated successfully in the Jimeta area of the capital city.

However, the boys met their waterloo on Saturday night when a group of angry residents mobilised, pursued and beat them to a pulp after they snatched a phone from a resident around Nasarawo area of Jimeta, Yola North local government area.

Spokesperson of Adamawa State Police Command, Suleiman Nguroje, who confirmed the incident, explained how unlucky the Shila Boys were this time.

“Normally, the Shila Boys go out in a group of three or four to attack citizens. They took advantage of somebody whom they followed, injured and took away his handset. People around there who saw what happened ran after the Shila Boys and lynched them.” Nguroje said.

He lamented that the incident happened at 9 pm on Saturday despite the 8pm to 6 am curfew imposed by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri about a week ago.

According to him, the boys were still alive when the police arrived the scene.

“When the attention of the police was drawn, some officers rushed to the scene and found the Shila Boys unconscious,” he said, adding that they were rushed to hospital for treatment but they were later confirmed dead.

Lebanon's ministry of health has disclosed that 25 persons on board a flight that arrived in the country's capital, Beirut from Kano on Wednesday May 6, have tested positive for Coronavirus.

The Middle East Airlines had been directed by the Lebanese government to evacuate its citizens from foreign countries in early April.

The Ministry of Health in its statement on Wednesday, said 25 people tested positive for Coronavirus after a test was carried out on passengers on board a flight that left Kano on May 5.

While the affected passengers will be taken to the hospital for treatment, those who tested negative will be quarantined and also re-examined if they show Coronavirus symptoms.

The statement reads in part;

“The Ministry of Public Health announces that it has been confirmed that 25 positive cases with COVID-19 were recorded among the passengers on board the flight that arrived from Nigeria,” it said.

“Accordingly, the affected cases will be transferred to the hospital with an emphasis on the application of strict domestic quarantine for negative cases, knowing that they will be followed up daily by the Ministry and whoever shows any symptoms will be referred to the hospital for re-examination.”

Lebanon has recorded 784 confirmed cases of Coronavirus and 25 deaths so far.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has narrated how a 10-year-old boy reportedly absconded to the northern part of Nigeria after testing positive in Oyo.

Makinde, who made the disclosure via his Twitter handle in the early hours of Thursday, confirmed eight new COVID-19 positive cases in the state.

He said, “We also have a further update on the two absconded cases reported earlier today. They absconded before being admitted to any of our isolation centres.

“After intensive contact tracing, one of them has been found and admitted to the Infectious Diseases Centre, Olodo, Ibadan.

“The other is a 10-year-old boy who, eyewitnesses claimed, boarded a north-bound vehicle. His details had been sent to the Sokoto State PHEOC. Contact tracing is still ongoing.”

The eight new COVID-19 positive cases bring the number of infections in the state to 52.

The governor also said two COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment in the state facility have been discharged.

Makinde wrote, “The COVID-19 confirmation tests of eight new cases just came back positive from the laboratory. This increases the number of confirmed cases in Oyo State to 52.

“Two confirmed COVID-19 patients were discharged from the Infectious Disease Centre, Olodo after receiving their second negative test results. This brings the number of discharged cases in Oyo State to 13.”

The governor urged members of the public to call the Emergency Operations Centre on any of the designated telephone numbers if they find travellers from other states arriving in their communities.

COVID-19 patients in Niger state on Wednesday May 6th staged a protest in their Isolation center over what they termed poor welfare and treatment meted at them.

They requested to be allowed to go baack to their homes instead of being left to ''die of hunger'' at the isolation facility. This comes after COVID19 patients in Gombe state also staged their own protest.

Meanwhile one of the patients at the Niger state Isolation center has absconded from the Isolation center. This was disclosed on the state government's Twitter handle.

The Obalende flyover in Lagos Island is currently on fire. The fire started after a petrol-laden tanker exploded while manouvering the roundabout under the bridge this evening. The tanker fell on its side and exploded just in front of a fuel station. One person has been confirmed dead.

Men of the state fire service are already on ground to put out the fire. This fire incident comes four days after an NNPC fuel station in Ogba, went up in flames destroying over 30 cars.
