The world is made richer by selfless contribution By CAROLE MANDI “The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” – Nelson Henderson Being the good African that I am, I find that I am enamoured by institutions of higher learning. Who can blame me? I am part of that whole education-is-the-key-to-success generation that was brought up with songs like “Someni vijana, muongeze pia bidii, mwisho wakusoma, mtapata kazi nzuri sana!” And so a couple of years ago, when the opportunity to visit Harvard University, the oldest institution of learning in the US, arose, I jumped at the offer. One crispy morning, a friend drove me through the various campuses of Harvard in Boston. The university, which is almost 400 years old, has retained many of its old buildings and character. When you walk down the streets, as many others have done in the last 300 years, you sense that you are in an institution whose place in history will always be undisputed and undiminished. I ran my fingers over the old grey stone wall of a building and walked down the cobbled street to a little bookshelf. It was all I could do not to dance. Yet this place of learning that so enchanted me, I would later learn owed its name to John Harvard, a young clergyman who bequeathed the college his library of 400 books and £779 pounds sterling which represented half his estate at the time. Did he, in his wildest dreams, anticipate the significance the university would have on the world of academia or that his surname would be uttered in revered tones by generations of students? Probably not. John Harvard, in my view, becomes one of those who live their mark on posterity, thanks to their selfless contribution and body of work. The world is left richer by those who leave behind a body of work that outlives them. Building a body of work, for many, happens over a lifetime and requires dedication and determination, passion and purpose, time and urgency. In hindsight, it seems like they pour their lives out for this body of work, that they are compelled, even driven to serve the greater good. Those who bequeath humanity any worthwhile legacy, understand that while they mortally stand briefly in time, what they leave behind must stand the test of time and the critical scrutiny of those who come after them. Yet they are motivated largely by contribution than recognition. How would our perspective change if we developed a keen sense of our role and place in our community and the world? What would be different if we worked not just for ourselves and our family but also for the coming generations we would never meet? Would we still ravage the land, cut down trees and pollute the environment? Would a work day still seem like grinding slog? Would we raise our children differently? Would we get by on average or strive for excellence? Perhaps if we had a sense of our responsibility to the future and our contribution to history, we would build better roads, schools and hospitals. Perhaps we would write laws that serve the interests of the majority while protecting the rights of the minorities. Perhaps we would plant more trees and go to war less. It would be less about my village, my tribe, my race and more about the human race. |

^^shakerz_1 You are so oblivious to race and everything around you aren't you? It's not right to blame the entire world's problems on one race, but it is just as silly [hell, it is soooo much more bleeping silly] to say that one should just get OVER thousands of years' worth of injustices. mess the race, EVERY SINGLE PERSON OF COLOR is oppressed by the white race. Don't try to fuc.king say that that isn't true. White people belong to a group of the oppressors and people of color belong to the oppressed. You don't just GET OVER that. I for one don't give two fu.cks about racially ignorant white people |
Thank you, White people, for all you’ve done for Blacks. Thank you for kidnapping and/or buying my ancestors in Africa, packing them onto ships where malnutrition, disease, anti-hygenic conditions, beatings, and rape ensured that a significant percentage did not survive the trip, but enough did for you to turn a profit. Thank you for enslaving my ancestors, forcing them to labor in the fields and in your houses for no pay (room and board is certainly enough!), in poor living conditions, without education, without their families, in many cases, and without hope that their lives would ever get better. Thank you for raping and beating my ancestors, I appreciate it. Thanks also for forcing them to “breed” as if they were animals, selecting out certain men and women for their strength, hoping that their children would be strong, too, and be able to pick more cotton or engage in other work you couldn’t be bothered to do yourself. Thank you, White people, for freeing us from actual slavery only to put us in virtual slavery with sharecropping. Additionally, thanks for messing up Reconstruction, enacting Jim Crow laws, lynching, and poll taxes. Thank you for silencing, assassinating, or disappearing those who inspired us to do better, be better, and stop taking racist shit every minute of our lives. We didn’t need them, anyway. Thank you for making sure our schools were underfunded, that our neighborhoods were filled with drugs, that any attempts to get the government to correct any lingering problems of racism were labeled “hand outs,” and perpetrating the myth of the Black Welfare Queen taking her food stamps and driving off in a Porche. We have so much to be grateful for, you see. And so my brothers and sisters won’t forget: Thank you, Europeans, for all you’ve done for us through the centuries. Thank you for coming down to Africa and deciding that every brown or black person you saw was an uneducated savage, assuming because their culture was not like your culture, that they had none worth noting or caring about. Thank you for colonizing the continent, inciting strife between different tribes, playing one tribe against another until, once many were weakend, you took down the one that was meant to be your ally. Thank you for using up the continents’ natural resources, for destroying the land in an effort to exploit the natural resources, and for abandoning areas that you , ed up when it became clear it wasn’t going to be profitable for you. Thank you for inventing the Transatlantic Slave Trade. We owe you one. Thank you for your continued interference in Africa, which has caused no end of fighting, no end of exploitation, and has contributed to the current climate in many African countries. Thank you for Apartheid. And throwing Mandela in jail. We didn’t need him, anyway. Thanks, White people, for everything you’ve done for Black people in America and Africa. We really, really should be more grateful and keep these thoughts in our hearts. External Source http://theangryblackwoman./2008/04/04/thank-you-white-people/ |
We are either front, middle or back row people, more often than not choosing where we sit. I’m sure psychologists have discovered good reason why people choose front and back row seats. However, if you could choose who sits in the front, middle or back row of your personal drama, who would it be? And who currently occupies those positions? Where are your family, colleagues, friends and enemies currently seated? If something exciting or terrible happens to you, who is the first person you call? Who do you go to with your most intimate thoughts? That’s your front row person. Who is last to find out about your salary increase, ill health or any life change you are contemplating? That’s probably a middle or back row person. Reserve your middle row for those unhealthy going nowhere relationships and those people who are best loved from a distance, and leave in your back row all those toxic relationships that destroy or devalue you. The quality of your life will be influenced by the quality of people who sit in your front row. So Ladies and Gentlemen Who has front-row seat in theatre of your life |
I always believed in the power of education and learning. But somehow people make it their lifelong pursuit to chase fancy degrees and titles usually ending up jobless, overqualified, and uncompetitive, in the work force, There are a lot of self made millionaires who never even had a proper education. like this dude who had small restorant near our house back in logos city now runs almost 10 different enterprises and travels europe nd asia several times ayear, I think life is all about people, Like as I always say, you can be in the worse possible place in the world, like afganistan or some refugee camp in 9ja, but if you surround yourself with the RIGHT people, everything will be fine. "Life is good when you know the right people" What do you think about education and lack of it? How do you want your life to be? Are you chasing for something that might leave you much more lost and empty in the end? What do you want in life? Kindly expound, |
^^soorry every one pls help ![]() |

Unless you can walk in the sho.es of these girls, you really don't have too much to say about them. Our mothers have a delicate balance with their daughters. 9ja mothers have been through so much and seen so many bad things happen to women. They don't use ISLAM to control their daughters, but they use their instincts and common sense. A mother wouldn't want her daughter to be rapped. A mother wouldn't want her daughter to be a hoe, and end up being considered as a trash. A mother wants the best for her daughter. We cannot blame for the way a mother feels about her daughter. Men and Women are not the same. If you can hang out with your girlfriends, which obviously a lot of girls I know do, then there isn't anything wrong with that. However, once the mother knows that one or few of the daughter's friends are corrupted, then by all means, the mother has the right to be worried about her daughter's well being. You're right, I will never know how a girl feels. But, the only FREEDOM I know of, is not having fun by going to the Movies, or Theme Parks, or Weddings, but knowing that you are who you are, and being having so much respect for what your Creator has told you to do, which to is OBEY your parents, and by having such a high value on yourself, for being a women, makes you know that you have all the FREEDOM you can have. A mind at ease and a heart so innocent is the BEST FREEDOM |
^^First, speak for yourself dear. Secondly, what on Earth do you consider "Normal okay fun"? I mean, if you're saying, let the girls date and have boyfriends, then that's against ISLAM. Unless you're against Islam, which then would make my entire response pointless. Furthermore, what do you mean "girls are raised to have no lives"? Are you serious, or are you having a miserable day? Girls, in the Islamic culture are raised to preserve their dignity and reputation. In many cultures, a female who goes around the BLOCK isn't respected, thus usually bring disrespect to her family and end up not getting married into a well-manner family. You know, Woman are like Pearls, the more they are preserved and kept clean (Whether she does it herself or by family), the more likely she will end up with a guy who's respecting her, and loving her for who she is, and where she came from. This is the reality on the ground |
Without being crude; 9ja men are letting down their female counterparts, it is any wonder that they are marrying non-9ja or in some case marrying outside their set boundary, as far as family relations are concerned. Whether in marriage, education, occupation or in the wider society 9ja women are performing better. Some 9ja men approach families, in the hope of landing their prized daughters, without even having a steady job. How can they expect this? Its really pathetic. 9ja men need to wake up and smell the coffee, as it were. No more feeling sorry for yourself, its time to get real and to restore the honor that we once held, well at least in the in eyes of our women. I was of the firm believe that 9ja women were wholly responsible for the break down in the family unit, but my views have now been altered, partly due to seeing that 9ja men are lagging between 9ja women in all fields of society. Nikah men who not pray, and not make rabadan, is there a differential between the infidel and him, He is a sinner too "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said: "If a man comes to propose to your daughter and you are pleased with his religiousness and Islamic manners, then give your daughter in marriage to him, otherwise you would be spreading corruption and great mischief on earth." |
Hello everyone! I've recently stocked up on some books and I thought I'd share some of my findings with you all; seeing how ideas spread quicker on a this type of medium. Anyways, I found this book titled The Seven Levels of Intimacy http://www.amazon.com/Seven-Levels-Intimacy-Loving-Being/dp/0743265114and it basically deals with how we interpret and often times , intimacy. Ask yourself, are you afraid of revealing who you really are to others? Do you find yourself being fiercely independent and guarded? Well, it is NOT healthy at all to be doing so! Life itself is a series of revelations. We shouldn't be so eager to layer ourselves with the profound fear of rejection or being loved less. This is where self-esteem comes in. Self-esteem is essentially accepting your faults, shortcomings and defects and allowing ourselves only to be our true selves. Intimacy is a such a prominent part of our lives. I am not advocating for sexual intimacy because that itself is only one component of a multi-dimensional process. What I am hoping to encourage among you all is to open yourselves up to others and realize that your full potential is hidden in the interactions we engage with others. So, how much of your life do you share with others? Not only is it healthy to do so, but it opens so many opportunities and doors to be interdependent and keep our sanity even in times of profound unease |
