Lets see which airline will board Bank-ole without the necessary security checks. I can imagine him asking ''do you know who I am''? Buffoon. Is he not the 'number 4'' man in Nigeria? Oyetunji Abioye Punch Facts emerged on wednesday that British Airways prevented the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Dimeji Bankole and his personal Assistanyt, Mr Emmanuel Adgoke, from boarding a flight to London last Friday. Our crrespondent learnt that bankole and his aide were at the BA boarding gate at Murtala Muhammed International Airport , Ikeja,Lagos when BA security officials aske to search the Speaker's luggage for screening. the speaker was said to have prevented Adegoke from handing over yhe luggage and they subsequently returned to the terminal building and left the airport. The speaker has, however, reacted to the development, saying he and his aide left the aiport to avoid causing a scene. It was learnt that the BA Station Manager, identified as Mr. Axvies Ekwem, denied the speaker and his aide entry into the aircraft at about 22.45pm. during the secondary screening of intending passengers to UK. It was alleged that the speaker had earlier breached a step in the primary screening process carried out by officials of the Federal Airport, Authority of Nigeria. he was alleged to have refused to allow security officials to conduct a pat-down screening on him. A source said, "After passing through the metal detector machine, the speaker refused FAAN security official called 'AVSEC Aliu' from carrying out the screening on him." The Federal Federal Government, through the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, had ordered 100 percent screening, including pat downs on all outbound passengers. The 100 per centscreening order followed an alleged attempt by a Nigerian, Farouk AbdulMutallab, to bomb a United States airliner over Detroit, Michigan, United states. Bankole eventually travelled the following day (Saturday) to London aboard a Virgin Atlantic flight. Airport officials, who declined to be named, said the speaker was properlly screened before boarding the flight. Contacted for comments, BA said in an email, "Due to the Data Protection Act, we are unable to comment on individual customers, aircraft and staff is always our top priority." But background information obtained on the incident reads, "On August 6, the speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Mr. Bankole dimeji, and his PA, Adegoke Emmanuel, were offloaded prior to boarding BA074 at Lagos Airport. "They refused to surrender their four pieces of hand luggage to BA security for hand search. The airline's duty manager explained to the speaker that this was a mandatory security check; he still refused and tried to force his way into the aircraft. He was immediately offloaded. Airline and other airpot duty officials including the Captain and London security duty manager were informed. Some customers witnessed the incident." A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Bakare, titled, Why Bankole disembarked from BA flight," reads, "For the record, the British Government exempts securitysearches on Presidents, Vice-presidents and Speakers of national parliaments among other VIPs and British Airways is the national carrier of Britain. "On Friday night, after all security checks on the speaker's aide that accompanied him, BA's local officials had demanded that the hand luggage of the speaker must be searched, against the rules of British Government and British Aviation Authority (BAA). To avoid ny scene the Speaker cancelled his trip and disembarked from the flight. ========================================================================================================================= Why Bankole Disembarked from BA Flight’By Sunday Okobi, 08.12.2010 Fct In response to inquiries from the media on why the Speaker of the House of Rep, Rt Hon. Dimeji Bankole disembarked from British Airway flight to London last week Friday, his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Bakare has clear the air saying that the Airway line violated the rules of British Government and British Aviation Authority (BAA) when the security officials insisted that the hand luggage of the Speaker must be searched, and in avoidance of any embarrassing scene, Bankole has to disembark from the flight. “For the record, British Government exempt security searches on Presidents, Vice Presidents and Speakers of the National Parliaments among other VIPs and British Airways is the national carrier of Britain. “On Friday night after all security checks on the Speaker’s aide that accompanied him, the BA’s local officials had demanded that the hand luggage of the Speaker must be searched against the rules of British Government and British Aviation Authority (BAA). To avoid any scene the Speaker cancelled his trip and disembarked from the flight,” Bakare stated. In a statement made available to THISDAY yesterday, he disclosed that, “when the Speaker travelled to London through another airline the next day, his hand luggage was not searched and on his return trip through BA, his hand luggage was equally not searched based on the exemption which have been confirmed from BAA Office in London. “We are at a loss at the attitude of BA local officials wondering if it has to do with alleged refusal of Speaker’s aide to ‘tip’ the BA officials who ordinarily should be conversant with the rules of their organization,” he expressed. However, Bakare has said the ugly incident has been reported to relevant aviation and security agencies for investigation. _http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=180509 |

2011 Ndigbo behind Jonathan – INCA By MERCY JACOB Wednesday, August 11, 2010 Dibe Photo: Sun News Publishing More Stories on This Section A political pressure group, Igbo National Consultative Assembly (INCA), has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to strongly prepare to contest for the office of the president in 2011 elections. Its national coordinator, Dr Godwin Dibe, said it is solidly behind Jonathan, stressing that the president has all it takes to take the country to the promised land. INCA pleaded with the Igbo race to forget what happened during the war and support the “Jonathan for President” agenda, stating that the president would certainly carry the race along. It also called on the North to be considerate and give other geo-political zones in the country the opportunity to pilot the affairs of the nation: “We reached the agreement to queue behind Jonathan in our recent summit, and our reason for the consensus is not far-fetched. From what we have observed, Jonathan is an intelligent man. He is the first person to rule Nigeria with a doctorate degree. He is an embodiment of experience. He is naturally disposed for the position of president. Jonathan has an impeccable quality in crisis management and the way he handled the last Jos crisis was an eloquent testimony to the stuff he is made of. “To crown it all, the president has a humble beginning, he came from a poor background and is not ambitious. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have conducted himself the way he did under Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, the former governor of Bayelsa State and former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua respectively when he served as their deputies. He does not have inordinate ambition. In fact, we see Jonathan as a God-sent person to rule Nigeria this time around. “Besides, we have been clamouring for power shift from the North to the South East or to the South South, and since Jonathan is from the South South, and it looks like power has shifted from the North to the South South. The Igbo race should give Jonathan full support now so that when the power shift comes to our turn, South South will support us. If we fail to support South South now and power goes back to the North, it would be difficult to get back to us again. “For us, supporting the Jonathan for President agenda will not make the Igbo race to lose her turn to rule Nigeria when our time comes. It would be better for us to be patient now and enjoy better opportunities tomorrow. The North has been holding power both during the military and civilian regimes in the country, if we fail to support Jonathan now, power will invariably go back to the North and we will remain spectators forever. “It is the South South that holds the nation’s economy. Oil, which is the main stay of our economy comes from the South South. So, it wouldn’t be any sin if somebody from that zone rules Nigeria. For us, it will go a long way in giving them a sense of belonging, even though they are in the minority. “Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, was given power to compensate the South West for the annulment of June 12, 1993 election after the death of the supposedly winner of that election, Chief M.K.O. Abiola. So, for the sake of the natural resources - petroleum, which the country has been living on, we feel it is high time the nation compensated South South by allowing Jonathan to continue in office after the 2011 elections. “It is painful that the Igbo race is being treated like second-class citizens in Nigeria, but we need to begin now to reverse the wrongs. INCA respects and supports the corporate existence of Nigeria as an invisible entity and any one calling for the country’s disintegration is an enemy. “The current debate on zoning of electoral positions in the country is normal in a democratic set up like ours, but INCA is asking all those who are against ‘Jonathan for Presidency’ in 2011 to have a rethink because we are now in the 21st century. “The Igbo race must be united and try to speak with one voice this time to ensure total victory for Jonathan. After 2011, we believe that Mr President will call for a national conference to address some issues of national importance and we believe that it will be to the benefit of the Igbo race. We have been having consultations with South South leaders through the Ohaneze Ndigbo on how to move the nation forward beyond 2011.” |

Gunmen kill banker in children's presence Simon Utebor The killing of a chartered accountant with Intercontinental Finance, a subsidiary of Intercontinental Bank Plc, Alhaji Ademola Adeagbo, on Friday evening by some unidentified gunmen, is being trailed by conflicting accounts. Sympathisers at Adeagbo residence on Sunday advertisement A younger brother of the deceased, Mr. Adeniyi Adeagbo, told our correspondent on Sunday that his brother was brutally murdered by people suspected to be hired assassins at Orimerunmu in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State. But the police in Ogun State, who said that the deceased's metallic grey Toyota Corolla metallic grey car had been recovered in addition to N94,000, a laptop, briefcase, four packet shirts and one wristwatch in his car, stated that it was not likely to be a case of assassination because he did not die immediately. Adeniyi told PUNCH METRO that on the fateful day, the gunmen had first driven to the residence of the slain banker in a private vehicle but did not find him there. He said they subsequently launched a manhunt for him until they met him on the road, discussing with one of his neighbours who was said to be recuperating from her illness. He said, "When my brother returned from work, he went to his wife's shop to look for her. When he got to the shop, his wife was not there but met his children and two of his friend's children in the shop. His children decided to go with him in his car. "As they were going towards home, he met his wife. His wife told him that there was a neighbour of theirs who had been ill for some time and that he should go and greet her. As he was going to the neighbour's house, he met her on the way. He stopped, came out of the car and exchanged pleasantries with her. As he was talking with the woman, some men drove near them and stopped. They came out from their car and told him they were policemen and that he was under arrest. "My brother told them he had no problem with the police and that if they were actually policemen, they should identify themselves. After saying that, the men put hands in their pouch as if they wanted to bring out their identification cards only for them to bring guns out and started dragging him to enter into their car in the full glare of his three children and the neighbour he was greeting. As he refused to follow them, they pulled the trigger and shot him dead. As the neighbour and the children ran away shouting, 'Won ti pa Alhaji, (they have killed Alhaji), the gunmen zoomed off with my brother's official car and their own." Adeniyi said that when the news filtered in that 45-year-old Adeagbo had been killed, the youths in the area allegedly chased the gunmen and they abandoned his brother's official car at the end of Orimerunmu Road. Curiously, his assailants did not ask him for money or anything, but were said to have told him before they shot him that they did not want anything from him but his life. Speaking amid tears, Adeniyi told our correspondent that his brother's death dealt a devastating blow to him in particular and the family in general. He said his brother was a fine gentleman who was kind to a fault, wondering why good people should be killed with such cruelty. "My brother did not do any business with anybody. I do not know why they chose to kill him. They have caused problem for us. He was the light of our family. I do not know how to pick the pieces of my life that his death has caused me. He was one brother that understood the plight of his people," the anguished brother said. However, the Ogun State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Ademuyiwa Adejobi, said, "It is not likely to be a case of assassination because he did not die immediately. He was alive when the vehicle was being taken away. He struggled with the bandits when he was shot. "The command wishes to appeal to members of the public that when such things happen, they should not struggle with the bandits. The command is investigating a case of armed robbery and not assassination." Our correspondent, who visited the residence of the Adeagbos, saw a motley crowd coming to commiserate with the family. The deceased's wife was inconsolable. Many sympathisers thronged the residence to pay their last respects. It was gathered that Adeagbo would be buried on Sunday. |
Kidnaping: Fashola makes case for State Police By Olasunkanmi Akoni Monnday, August 9, 2010 * Receives four kidnapped Journalists Wahab Oba and Governor Fashola advertisement Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) of Lagos State has advocated for state policing arguing that its existence will tremendously held nib the commission of crimes in the bud. The governor spoke in his Alausa office, Ikeja while receiving the four kidnapped and released Journalists and their driver who were on their way back to Lagos after an official assignment in Uyo, the Ikwa-Ibom state capital. He said there was dire need to quickly restructure what he referred to as” the faulty federal structure in Nigeria” identifying state police as one of the faulty federal structures. The governor noted that state policing was long overdue adding that one of the notable things his administration has achieved is the installation of lights on major streets at night; maintaining that it has greatly reduced crime rate in the state. According to him: “ The need to allow states to have their own Police is long overdue. This will tremendously assist in checkmating criminal activities. Some areas of coverage may be determined to include items like managing petty crimes which does not need the attention of the Federal Police. It is very wrong for the States to always wait on the Federal Government to post policemen to it without taking due cognizance of its peculiarities. Again, another factor that could help the individual states fighting crime which my administration has done is in the area of street lighting. If there is constant power supply, artisans with entrepreneurial skills will flood the cities and rural areas, reduce incidence of criminal tendencies among the youths who would be kept busy and have money in their pockets to meet their demands.” The governor said if the various states are allowed to recruit their Policemen and women, it would enable it maintain a sizeable number of personnel that it can adequately cater for while ensuring that federal police would be pre-occupied with fighting more violent crimes. Fashola said that unless adequate and sophisticated equipment to confront crime are put at the disposal of the Nigeria Police, people cannot accuse the force of inefficiency. The governor said part of the reasons for the success story of the operations of the Police and crime prevention in Lagos is the provision of welfare packages like insurance cover for the Policemen which offer protection for the family in the event of death or disability. The governor also noted that the rate of criminal activities in Lagos State has reduced because hitherto unemployed youths are now meaningfully engaged in greening, landscaping, and beautification or employed in the various construction sites. Earlier, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, Alhaji Wahab Oba, expressed appreciation to the governor and members of the state Executive for the roles played during the kidnap saga. He said the kidnappers were very unanimous in commending the works of Governor Fashola in Lagos. In his words: “The kidnappers kept on saying that we are lucky that we are from Lagos where things work unlike what is happening in other states in the East. They also complained about lack of good governance”. He urged the Governor to help convey the appreciation of the kidnap victims to President Goodluck Jonathan and the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ogbona Onovo for putting machineries in place which led to pressure on the kidnappers leading to their release. The NUJ Chairman canvassed special security funds and provision of modern sophisticated equipment to the Police to be able to confront abductors and kidnappers whom he said had sophisticated weapons in their possession. Oba added that he and his colleagues have dedicated their lives to fighting kidnappers and that they have concluded plans to document their experience in a book form to assist security agencies in tracking such people down in the future. Also on the entourage of the NUJ during the “Thank You Visit” were the Vice Chairman of the Council, Mr Deji Elumoye, and the freed journalists – the Zonal Secretary of NUJ, Mr. Adolphus Okonkwo, the Acting Secretary, Mr. Sylva Okereke, NUJ Member, Mr. Sola Oyeyipo while the State Deputy Governor, Princess Adebisi Sarah Sosan, the Secretary to the State Government, Princess Adenrele Adeniran-Ogunsanya, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele among other members of the Executive Council and top government functionaries joined the Governor in receiving the Journalists. In a similar event, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW,) Lagos state council has pledged its total support for the state’s security trust fund, describing Fashola’s drive in that direction as enviable and commendable. It also promised that none of his members would be used to disrupt the 2011 election anywhere in the state, noting that the constant fracas in Mushin area of the state was always being caused by the factional members of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress. According to the chairman, Yakubu Olohunwa who led a delegation of his members to the NUJ state secretariat on a solidarity visit yesterday, “None of our member will be a willing tool in the hands of politicians in the next election because that is our joint resolution to stop and correct the misconception of our union and profession by Nigerians; no commercial driver is associated or synonymous with thuggery in any other place in the world but Nigeria; there is the need to correct that by ourselves.” |

http://www.tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/9326-obj-grandfather-of-corruption-reps OBJ, grandfather of corruption –Reps | Print | E-mail Written by Idowu Samuel, Abuja Friday, 06 August 2010 THE Minority caucus in the House of Representatives, on Thursday, lambasted former President Olusegun Obasanjo for referring to the National Assembly as a corrupt entity milking the nation dry. Media reports had quoted the ex-president to have accused the National Assembly of taking remuneration from the nation, far beyond their productive level. While replying the formner president, the caucus insisted that Obasanjo lacked the moral right to pronounce them corrupt because he (Obasanjo) allegedly instituted corruption in Nigeria. The Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Honourable Ali Ndume, in his response to the remarks made by Obasanjo on the National Assembly, said thy were misplaced, adding that he lacked the moral right to pronounce the legislators as corrupt lots. He, however, said the allegation of corruption against the National Assembly might not be totally false, adding that his grouse against Obasanjo was that he (Obasanjo), as the president of Nigeria, allegedly institutionalised corruption and, therefore, possessed no right to call anyone corrupt. In his address to mark the end of the 2009/2010 legislative year, Ndume said the minorities in the House of Representatives also reviewed the government under President Goodluck Jonathan and came out with a verdict that the president had failed in his duties of providing good leadership for the nation. The minority leader declared the government of President Goodluck Jonathan as a disaster, saying that the president erred by refusing to sign the 2010 supplementary budget when the year had less than five months to wind up. He asked the president to concentrate on governance rather than his current allged desire to upturn the zoning arrangement in his political party towards emerging as the presidential candidate for 2011. Ndume castigated the president for failing to meet up the expectation of Nigerians who reposed so much hope in his leadership when fate brought him on board as the number one man in the country. |
