A male model and teaching assistant who campaigned against knife crime was stabbed to death after robbers used Gumtree to lure him into a trap to steal his laptop. Michael Adegbite, who also worked as a fitness instructor and football coach, was attacked after he advertised his secondhand Mac Book on the popular classifieds website for £200. He and a friend went to meet someone they believed was a buyer in Enfield on Sunday evening but were confronted by three youths. Detectives believe the men lured the 28-year-old to the rendezvous with the intention of mugging him for the laptop. Mr Adegbite and his friend managed to snatch the laptop back and the suspects ran off.Police say that a short time later, a second friend joined the victim and the three men set out to look for the group who had attempted to rob them. Minutes later there was a confrontation and a scuffle in the street and Mr Adegbite was stabbed once in the chest. He died at the roadside 30 minutes later despite frantic attempts by neighbours and paramedics tosave his life.Three 18-year-old men have now been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently being questioned by police. Immediate past Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has offered to refund the sum of $ 250 million dollars to the Nigerian government in return for immunity from further investigation and possible prosecution, SaharaReporters has learned. However, her overture has reportedly received a cold response from President Muhammadu Buhari. A source in Aso Rock and a ranking member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) told our correspondent that the former minister has been reaching out to influential government and ruling party officials, in and outside Abuja, to prevail on President Buhari to accept her offer and let bygones be bygone. According to our sources, Mrs. Alison-Madueke had enlisted the support of several figures close to Mr. Buhari, including Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, to intercede with the incumbent president. Mrs. Alison-Madueke was one of the closest ministers to former President Goodluck Jonathan, and is reputed to have anchored and facilitated numerous money-laundering scandals and deals that characterized the era of the just- ended Jonathan administration. The former Petroleum Minister oversaw several oil swap deals, the disposition of oil wells handed over by Shell Petroleum to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and the direct looting of funds through the NNPC. Former Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, was forced out of office after he revealed that the NNPC had failed to remit more than $20 billion in oil revenues with the CBN. The former Petroleum Minister is the latest of several officials who served under Mr. Jonathan’s government that are currently negotiating “soft landing deals” with the Buhari administration. The incumbent president, who was sworn in on May 29, 2015, has vowed to probe various questionable financial actions taken by his successor or officials of his government. Mr. Buhari is reportedly determined to recover billions of dollars in stolen funds. One source said Mrs. Alison- Madueke’s latest offer to refund at least $250 million to the government came after she learned that President Buhari’s scheduled meeting with US Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, would include a discussion of ways that the US government could facilitate the investigation, arrest and prosecution of some officials of the Jonathan administration implicated in the theft of billions of dollars and a variety of frauds that resulted in the loss of significant sums of public funds in Nigeria. SaharaReporters exclusively reported earlier in the week that the former Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has been cooperating with the Buhari administration’s ongoing, if quiet, probe of a series of questionable financial transactions by the Jonathan administration. Our sources revealed that Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala had given the Buhari administration documents that expose a number of shady financial deals executed by the Jonathan administration. Two days ago, we reported that former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Emeka Anyaoku, had appealed to Mr. Buhari to halt the ongoing probe of former President Jonathan’s administration. Even though Mr. Anyaoku has denied that he urged Mr. Buhari to stop the investigation of his predecessor’s financial dealings, our sources insisted that the ex-Commonwealth chief executive brought up the matter. Our sources disclosed that Mr. Buhari was unimpressed by Mrs. Alison-Madueke’s offer. “Mr. President considers the $250 million as ridiculous considering the amount of money Mrs. Diezani Alison- Madueke is suspected to have diverted into her pocket and those of others,” said one source. According to our sources, Mr. Buhari is intent on ordering a full audit of deals and transactions done by the former Petroleum Minister and her cohorts in the various agencies that reported to her. In addition, the new president is reportedly focused on looking further at the extensive embezzlement of security funds by appointees of the former president. Mr. Buhari has approved an investigation of how more than $3 billion in Nigeria’s defense budget was spent. Security agents who searched the homes of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, reportedly carted away some revealing documents. Earlier today, the Department of State Security (DSS) arrested and detained Gordon Obuah, a former Chief Security Officer to President Goodluck Jonathan. Mr. Obuah is reportedly being questioned over his alleged mastermind of a multi-million dollar oil bunkering deal during the former administration. President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday in Abuja urged the newly appointed Service Chiefs to help him rebuild the reputation of the Armed Forces and the nation. This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu. The statement said the president made the appeal while addressing service chiefs shortly after their appointments were announced. The President also called on them to show utmost commitment to their new duties. “All of you, including the National Security Adviser, were chosen on merit. Your records gave you the job. Save for the new Chief of Army Staff whom I briefly met at his Command at the Multi-National Joint Task Force in Chad, I don’t know any of you. “Your records recommended you. “Legally, you are in acting capacity until the National Assembly accepts you. “It is only then that you will take the oath of office. Thereafter, we will sit down and talk in more detail,” President Buhari told the new service chiefs. He assured them that their nominations would be sent soon to the National Assembly for confirmation. source:http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/07/buhari-to-service-chiefs-rebuild-reputation-of-armed-forces/ |
The Federal Government has issued licenses to import refine petroleum products to 29 marketers in a bid to end the fuel scarcity witnessed across the country. The third quarter approval for import allocations to 29marketers signaled a significant reduction in the number of marketers previous issued with such allocations. Previously, 43 marketers were given import allocation but the significant reduction may be seen as a way of blocking leakages in oil andgas sector as promised by President Muhammadu Buhari. The 29 marketers include the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) which in the last couple of months struggled to sustain supply. It was gathered that the approval was given by President Muhammadu Buhari to the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to allow NNPC and other oil marketers to import fuel into the country this quarter. The third quarter import allocation is thought to be around 1.6 million metric tonnes of petrol, a source in PPPRA disclosed. NNPC,NIPCO Plc, Oando Plc, Conoil, Mobil Oil, Masters Energy, Techno Oil and Folawiyo Oil and Gas, Total Nigeria Plc and Mobil Oil Plc are some of the companies granted imported allocations. Although the PPPRA was yet to issue an official statement on the third quarter import allocation, another source in PPPRA said the agency now expects major oil marketers to resume importation of petrol after extracting a promise from the government that outstanding claims on subsidies will be paid. An industry source who pleaded anonymity confirmed the allocation to the Tribune Online in a telephone conversation."We got our allocation on Friday and I'm sure there are 29 of us as against the previous 43 marketers issued licenses to import," he said. The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the April 11 governorship poll in Rivers State, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has accused the Rivers State Government of dishonesty. Peterside specifically said the state government under Governor Nyesom Wike is hoodwinking the people of the state, faulting the governor’s claim that he (Wike) met an empty treasury. He noted that the new administration had yet to make any policy statement six weeks after its inception, adding that the situation suggested that the people have a rudderless state. Apparently making reference to Wike’s alleged recovering of government property from former aides of former Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Peterside said the current governor was embarking on “mindless pursuit of vendetta against individuals”. He added, “Too much dishonesty on the part of the government to hoodwink Rivers people. For instance, allegations of empty coffer is a spurious tale as even Mr. Wike, by his own admission, has been announcing various funds that he located in different government accounts. “His false claim of using Julius Berger for the refilling of pot holes when he has been using local contractors and paying them peanuts. His use of the Berger name was simply a red herring to enable him to loot public funds. “Six weeks after assuming office, the government has not made one single policy statement; rather, it appointed the Nimi Walson Jack committee to design a blueprint for the running of government after it had taken off. A move that suggests we have the case of a rudderless state manned by persons whose only bond to the state is to siphon our resources. “The mindless pursuit of vendetta against individuals, chasing of shadows and brazen impunity against the long-term interest of the state. Obvious lack of commitment to the development of Rivers State. “A case in point is the security situation, which has continued to deteriorate with criminality promoted at the expense of the safety of our people. Kidnapping and armed robbery are now rooted and government is doing nothing. “Poor understanding of public finance and questionable management of public funds, as is evidenced in the borrowing of N30bn in 30 days.” The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, disagreed with Peterside, maintaining that Wike did not hoodwink the people of the state. Inko-Tariah explained that contractors had gone back to sites to continue most projects abandoned by the immediate past administration on the directive of the current administration. The spoksman said, “I am a little bit startled that Dakuku Peterside could make such sweeping statement against the current administration. Look at the roads, the governor is working on them. Most of these projects were abandoned by the Amaechi administration, Governor Wike decided to work on them. Then who is hoodwinking the people? “When you talk of salaries, the immediate past governor refused to pay workers, sportsmen and women and pensioners, but the current administration, led by Governor Wike, has started paying salaries and pensions, including the payment of N400m to our footballers.” Source:http://www.punchng.com/news/wike-deceiving-rivers-people-to-siphon-funds-peterside/

UMUAHIA—ABIA State governorship candidate on the platform of All Progressive Grand Alliance [APGA] in the last general elections, Dr. Alex Otti has denied rumours that he was negotiating with Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and his party, PDP to drop his petition at the tribunal describing the rumours as “wicked, baseless and blatant falsehood”. Dismissing the rumour as laughable, Otti said negotiating to withdraw his petition would amount to betrayal of the trust the people who supported and voted for him reposed on him. He however admitted that different emissaries from his opponents had continued to approach him for a truce but insisted that no amount of pressure and persuasion would make him to drop the struggle to pursue the matter to a logical legal conclusion. Otti, in a statement issued weekend in Umuahia, said that the mandate freely given to him by Abia people through the ballot was non-negotiable, saying he was marching on with the legal action at the tribunal. Entitled “My governorship mandate non-negotiable”, Otti described the rumoured secret talks with his opponents for a possible reconciliation as untrue and handiwork of political jobbers. “The rumour is baseless, blatant falsehood and the wishful thinking of idle political jobbers and rumour peddlers, in their deliberate attempt to cause mischief and deceive unsuspecting members of the public. “To negotiate away the mandate from Abia people, who trooped out in their numbers and voted for me because of their conviction and belief in my ability to bring about the desired change, will amount to a betrayal of the people’s trust.” “And rather than betray the trust, I am more emboldened and resolute to explore all the legal means possible to reclaim the stolen mandate in order to be able to fulfill my campaign promises to put smiles on people’s faces. DAILY POST gathered that the police may be acting on a perceived information that some groups who were not favoured by the Federal High Court ruling may invade the council secretariats in protest. A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, had ordered the cancellation of the local government elections conducted in Rivers State few days to the expiration of the tenure of former Governor, Rotimi Ameachi’s. Justice Lambo Akanbi, in his ruling, berated the former administration of Rotimi Amaechi for conducting the local council elections despite his order that all parties should maintain status quo and leave the rest. Justice Akanbi also accused the immediate past government of “flagrant disobedience of court processes. In a swift reaction to annulment, the Rivers state House of Assembly, based on a request from Governor, Nyesom Wike immediately screened and confirmed Caretaker Committee members to manage the affairs of the 22 Local councils, all of whom are members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the state. Reports reaching DAILY POST however has it that the police have been drafted to all the council secretariats, stopping the newly sworn-in CTC members and the removed Chairmen from gaining entry into the councils. Meanwhile, the National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has requested that the council be reopened. The party described as “unconstitutional, reprehensible abuse of power and brazen show of partisanship, the action of the APC- led federal government controlled police in barring caretaker committees lawfully appointed by the state government from taking charge of the councils.” PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh in a statement on Friday said the action of the police “is an affront to the ruling of the High Court, which Thursday dissolved the 22 local government councils unlawfully imposed by the immediate past administration in the state, upon which the caretaker committees were appointed by Governor Nyesom Wike.” The party said “it was curious that the police allowed the dissolution of local government councils and appointment of caretaker committees in APC controlled Plateau and Kaduna states, even when they were without the orders of the court but elected to clamp down on that of Rivers State, which came as a result of judicial pronouncement.” The former ruling party, now opposition party charged the Inspector General of Police to come out clean on the matter and assure Nigerians of the non-partisanship of the Police Force by ordering the immediate unsealing of the councils. The party said Nigerians and the international community should note the development, which “is a yet another clear indication that the Nigerian police may have become a partisan and compromised instrument in the hands of the APC federal government to destabilize PDP controlled states,” Metuh said.
