NAN, Lagos: Nigeria and Africa thrown into mourning with the death early on SaturdayS of a four-time former Super Eagles Coach, Shuaibu Amodu. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Amodu.jpeg Amodu, 58, who until his death was the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director from April 2016, reportedly died during a brief illness in Benin. His death came as the nation is still mourning Stephen Keshi, 54, the country’s football legend, who died early on Wednesday in Benin too. Amodu coached the Eagles several times; qualifying the national team twice for the World Cup in 2002 and 2010 but was not allowed to manage the national team at both World Cups. The coach also led BCC Lions to win the 1989 FA Cup, breaking a long time jinx of northern clubs’ inability to win the trophy. The following year, he led the club to win the Africa Cup Winners. Reacting to Amodu’s demise, ex-international, Segun Odegbami, said that such death in quick succession was a shock and had negative implications. “It is sad to be hearing the news of things happening in this manner; I think something really needs to be done, and something we need to know. “I think the people put in charge of sports don’t know anything about it. They don’t understand the pressure under which the real sportsmen work.” “The players and coaches are dying slowly by the nature of their profession but those at the helm of administration do not seem to know.” “We have so many of them on their sick bed with no help going to them,” he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Saturday. Odegbami urged the Federal Government to do something urgently about the welfare of sportsmen. Adegboye Onigbinde, who had also coached the senior national team, said: “I’m confused and sad; these are young active men dying in their primes, it’s so sad. “I’m frustrated that we are mourning again just few days after the death of Coach Stephen Keshi.” Samuel Ikpea, Secretary, Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC), told NAN that Amodu’s death was another tragedy for the football family and Nigerians in general. “This is unpleasant news this morning, a big tragedy to the football sector and the nation in general, it’s really painful.” “We have yet to get over Keshi’s death and only to wake up to get another sorrowful news about Amodu, I can’t understand what is happening,” he said. “I think the sad news is becoming alarming and calls for fervent prayers because we cannot continue to lose our football icons just like that,’’ he said. He disclosed that a condolence register would be opened for fans over Keshi and Amodu’s deaths at the NFSC Secretariat at 10 Mabo Str, Surulere, Lagos. Former Super Eagles Assistant Coach, Joe Erico, told NAN that the news was terrifying and very strange having recently lost Keshi. “It’s a sad development, what is really going on? Sincerely, it is so hard to accept.” “To lose two of our illustrious sons that gave so much to us in football development in so short a time is shocking.” “It is indeed very tough to bear, may God be with Amodu’s family and bless the soul of the departed,” Erico said. Friday Ekpo, a former Super Eagles player, told NAN that Amodu’s death was a double tragedy for the nation. Ekpo said that the nation had yet to recover from the death of Stephen Keshi which took place a few days ago to face that of Amodu who had mentored many coaches. “I’m short of words with the sudden demise of Amodu, I remember the experience I had with him when he was my instructor in the CAF Grade B and C coaching course.” Also, Frank Ilaboya, Chairman, Edo Football Association, told NAN that he found it hard to believe that Amodu was no more. Ilaboya said there was no earlier notice about his illness and all of a sudden, he got the sad news of his death. “I find it hard to believe that Amodu is dead; in fact it was the Edo Commissioner that broke the news to me this morning.” “It’s really devastating and has left me speechless that within four days we have lost two prominent football heroes; I am personally bereaved. “I pray that God will grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss,” he said. Also, Olajide Royal, Secretary, Women Amateur Football Association, said that Amodu’s death would leave a big vacuum in the football family. Royal advised sportsmen to always go for regular checkup to know their health status. Manu Garba, a former U-17 Golden Eaglets’ coach, said Amodu’s death was shocking, noting: “We are still in shock over Keshi’s death and we have lost another great coach.” The coach, who helped the Flying Eagles to win the 2015 African U-20 Championship, said the NFF should honour these dead legends for their efforts in the sport. “Honestly, I am not a happy man today for we have lost yet another great coach who made his mark.” “These are trying times for the federation and sports fans all over.” “I pray that his soul rest peacefully with his maker and grant his family the heart to bear the loss.” “I want the federation to immortalise these great coaches of our times and put them on high pedestals,” he said. Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has described the demise of Coach Shuaibu Amodu as a great loss to the Nigerian football community, referring to the ex-Super Eagles coach as a football genius who contributed immensely to the development of football not only in Nigeria, but Africa as a whole. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/IMG_20160612_083446.jpg The Governor who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Kingsley Fanwo said Amodu was the unsung hero behind the success of Nigeria in the round leather game in the past two decades. “Few days after losing the ‘Big Boss’ Keshi to the cold hands of death, we are again dazed by the demise of a football genius with unblinking commitment to the growth of the round leather game in Nigeria and Africa. “In his hey days as both a professional footballer and coach, the late Amodu displayed unparalleled professionalism, defending the integrity and excellence of the Nigerian colours with unmatched candour and desire. His death is a blow to the football family around the world.” Governor Bello described the late Amodu as a cool-headed, intelligent and goal-getting tactician who never got the high credit commensurate with his great contributions to the development of Nigerian football. His words: “As a recurring decimal in the Nigerian football for decades, his judgements, commitment and hunger for success was never in doubt. The people of Kogi State wish to commiserate with the family of the deceased, the people and Government of Edo State as well as the Nigerian Football Federation which the late tactician served as Technical Director until his death.” https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/IMG_20160612_083427.jpg The Governor called on Nigerians to pray for the football family against losing the best in their prime, saying the late coach will be sorely missed. “It is unfortunate that the country is losing the characters that made the world respect Nigeria in football at a time we need the best we can muster to rebound the nation to the path of football glory. We need to pray fervently for our football house for God’s intervention and protection.” Governor Bello prayed for the repose of the soul of the departed hero and for the family, the emotional strength to bear the great loss. The Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed the appointment of the immediate past Chief Judge (CJ) of the state, Justice Ayotunde Philips as the Chairman of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC). https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/13434924_1136887732999158_8635590619420785233_n.jpg Justice Philips’ appointment, which was confirmed during plenary on Thursday, followed her nomination by the State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode through a letter sent to the House few weeks back. The Clerk of the House, Mr. Sanni Azeez was subsequently ordered to communicate the confirmation of the appointment of Philips to the Governor through a letter. Justice Philips, who was invited to the House to defend her nomination, said during plenary that she was prepared for the job and that this would halt her retirement, which she had enjoyed for sometime now, adding that she was ready to serve the State. Some of the lawmakers, who contributed during her appearance, observed that she served the State meritoriously during her tenure as the Chief Judge of the State. In his comment, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa told Justice Philips that the job would require her to go round the State unlike, when she was the CJ. “You will now need to visit all the Local Government Areas in the State during the registration for the election and during the election proper. You must be ready to do the job as required so that we could have a free and fair election. We count on you since you were successful during your tenure as the Chief Judge,” he said. Answering questions from the Speaker if it was possible to start speaking Yoruba Language in the courts in the State, Justice Philips said that this would be impossible as some of the people who come to the courts would not understand the language. “Some of the people, who come to the court do not understand Yoruba Language and when you start speaking Yoruba in the court it would be a ground for appeal for someone, who does not understand Yoruba Language,” she said. Col. HA Gambo, Enugu: 1.The attention of the 82 Division, Nigerian Army has been drawn to a planned release of report by Amnesty International on the recent violent activities by IPOB and MASSOB on 31st May 2016 in which they were alleging that the Nigerian Army planned the killing of the protesters. This is not true but the usual calculated attempt to rubbish the Security forces in particular and the Nigerian Army just to remain relevant. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/download.jpg 2. It should be noted that the Non-governmental organization has always been of the habit of being the judge and jury in matters of our national security without recourse to fairness, objectivity, all aimed at rubbishing the Nigerian Army for reasons best known to them. This could not be far from trying albeit unsuccessfully to be relevant and justify funding. 3. For the avoidance of doubt, what transpired that fateful day was that some elements of MASSOB/IPOB engaged in violent protests which led to outright breakdown of law and order. The pro-Biafra protesters who had chosen the day to mark the 50th Anniversary of Biafra perpetrated a number of unimaginable atrocities to unhinge the reign of peace, security and stability in several parts of Anambra State. 4. A number of persons were selected for attack, killed and burnt. Two personnel of the Nigeria Police were killed, several soldiers were wounded, a Nigeria Police vehicle was completely burnt down while another of the Nigerian Army was vandalized. The strategic Niger Bridge at Onitsha was at the verge of being captured particularly with the coordinated reinforcement of the violent protesters from the Asaba end of the Bridge. In addition, wanton destruction of lives and properties were brazenly carried out by the protesters who employed firearms, crude weapons as well as other volatile cocktails such as acid and dynamites. In consequence, law, order and security were grossly threatened across the State and beyond. 5. The Nigerian Army in synergy with other security agencies under its constitutional mandates for Military Aid to Civil Authority (MACA) and Military Aid to Civil Power (MACP) acted responsively in order to de-escalate the deteriorating security situation. Instructively, the military and other security agencies exercised maximum restraints against the odds of provocative and inexplicable violence that were employed against them by the pro-Biafra protesters. The military and of course the other security agencies acted professionally within the extant Rules of Engagement to successfully de-escalate the budding anarchy. 6.It is rather inconceivable for any individual or group to have decided to inundate the general public with an anecdote of unverified narratives in order to discredit the Nigerian Army in the course of carrying out its constitutional duties despite the premeditated and unprovoked attacks in the hands of the violent pro-Biafra mob as Amnesty International is determined to do. Wilson Uwujaren, Abuja: The trial of a former governor of Plateau State, Joshua Dariye, who is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on charges bordering on money laundering and diversion of funds, witnessed a turn of events on June 10, 2016 as the defence counsel, G. S. Pwul, SAN, rather than open its defence, told the court that “we intend to raise a no-case submission”. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Dariye.jpeg Dariye is being prosecuted by the EFCC, at a Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Gudu, Abuja, presided over by Justice Adebukola Banjoko. He is alleged to have siphoned the state’s ecological fund to the tune of N1.16 billion. At the last sitting of June 6, 2016 when the prosecution closed its case against Dariye, his counsel, Pwul had told the court that it would open its defence on the adjourned date of June 10, 2016 and “we intend to present seven witnesses”. However, at the resumed sitting, rather than open its defence, Pwul informed the court that he intended to raise a no-case submission. “The matter is for opening of defence, however, I am constrained to start today, as I could not get the record of proceedings of PW1, PW4, PW5 and PW9; besides, we intend to raise a no-case submission,” Pwul said. Surprised by the turn of events, prosecution counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, did not hide his feelings as he expressed concerns that it was a delay tactic being employed by the defence. “On the last adjourned date, the prosecution closed its case and the defendant counsel said he would open his defence today,” Jacobs said, adding that, “it is surprising that the same counsel is now coming with the intention to delay the proceedings by requesting for the record of proceeding just yesterday, and now coming with a no-case submission.” Jacobs further argued that the action of the defence, was “against the spirit of Section 396 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015”. Justice Banjoko, afterwards, adjourned till June 14, 2016 “for arguments on no-case submission by the defence”. The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. (Mrs) Idiat Oluranti Adebule, said apart from the fact that credible and experienced Nigerians were appointed into the ETF Board, the entire process of accessing the fund has equally been designed to be “credible, transparent, accountable and not discriminate on account of gender, religion, physical ability or disability, political affiliation and socio-economic background.” Both the ETF and the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment were created by the Ambode-led administration in the State, and they were designed to tackle unemployment with the sole mandate of reducing it to a barest minimum. Already, the yearly contribution of N6.25 billion for Year 2016 to the Fund has been released by the State Government, while the disbursement would kick-off in earnest. Speaking on the summit with the theme: “Strengthening Partnership For Employment Opportunities and Wealth Creation in a Competitive Environment,” Governor Ambode said the summit was a platform initiated to generate ideas, harmonize strategies and device strong partnership for sustainable wealth creation. While urging participants at the summit to come up with ideas and suggestion that would add value to the strategy guiding the design and implementation of sustainable programmes for harnessing the opportunities for job and wealth creation, the Governor assured that his administration would favourably consider the recommendations from stakeholders. He added that his administration strongly believes in creating potential and innovative capacity for the youths, especially by providing support and creating conducive environment for the innovative ideas to thrive, thereby bringing about employment opportunities and sustainable wealth creation. Besides, Governor Ambode said the economic challenges facing Nigeria as a result of dwindling revenue from crude oil, presents a unique opportunity to chart a new direction for sustainable economic growth, adding that part of it was what his administration has been to support the establishment and growth of small businesses to create job opportunities and generate wealth for the collective prosperity of all. In his goodwill message, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo commended Governor Ambode for his laudable achievements in infrastructure renewal and security. The Vice President, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu, said infrastructure renewal and security were the necessary ingredients for sustainable wealth creation and generation of employment which equally are the basis for long term progress. In her keynote address, Chairperson of the Lagos State ETF Board, Mrs. Ifueko Omoigui Okaru said Nigeria must create about 1.5 million jobs quarterly to keep the number of unemployed people flat, adding that as a way out, there must be an effective collaboration between government and the private sector to come up with solutions. Okaru, who lamented that many Nigerians were spending time to acquire certificates that are of no value, said the people must be encouraged to look around for opportunities and come up with innovative solutions to problems. She also advocated the need for order and discipline in the society, saying such would also go a long way in creating job opportunities. Speaking on the ETF, Okaru said government would soon embark on disbursement of the fund, adding that at the moment the board was putting in place necessary foundation to build trust and credibility. The Kebbi State Government has seen a massive influx of agricultural activities in the state. The state is tapping into the potential of building its economy with agriculture as the focus. In the last one year, the Executive Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu has received investors both local and international, dignitaries and officials of different agricultural backgrounds in the State. Governor Bagudu has expressed his commitment towards conducive environment for investors with the people of Kebbi’s interest at heart. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/kebbi.jpg This weekend was no different. In the States efforts to foster collaborations and support for agriculture across the nation, Kebbi hosted a technical committee from 7 Northwest states for an Intensive Workshop on Agriculture between the 3rd and 5th June. The ARDP under auspices of North West Governors Forum organized the workshop and delegates included commissioners, special assistants, Permanent Secretaries and Directors of Agriculture from the NW Zone. The Anchor borrowers scheme launched by President Muhammadu Buhari in Kebbi last November empowered over 75,000 farmers during the dry season farming and the resounding success is visible for all to see. Other Agro states are set to benefit from the scheme and are one of the aims of the workshop holding in Kebbi this weekend. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos also visited Kebbi on Saturday to further cement the Lagos-Kebbi Joint Agricultural Development partnership (LASKEB) that focuses on commodity exchange, job creation & value chains. He had courtesy visits to the Government House and the palaces of HRH Emir of Gwandu and Emir of Argungu. He also inspected the Labana Rice Mills and a mini-agric show. The State Government recently appointed Usman Aliyu Dangaladima as pioneer Co-ordinator of the Partnership. Governor Ambodes team spent three days in Kebbi touring farms, facilities, production and processing hubs within the State. The team comprised of Lagos State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Toyin Suarau, Perm Sec. Agriculture, SA Food Security and the States Legal Adviser. Lagos and Kebbi had earlier signed in Lagos the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in March, 2016 with Royal fathers, Cabinet members and members of the State House of Assembly present. Governor Ambode said this during his courtesy visit ‘This relationship is visionary and it is also a pointer to the fact that the two states have decided to openly support the vision of Mr. President, Muhammadu Buhari. The change mantra that President Buhari has been preaching is what this whole relationship is all about. We must look inward. We must start to reintegrate our economy in such a manner that we must not continue to import what we can produce and we must create a value chain where we have comparative advantage to do so”. With Lagos a major consumer of Agricultural products and Kebbi a major producer, the innovative partnership is sure to support both states. The State has also seen visits by the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbeh and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele who have both attested to the commitment of the State and the Governor in boosting the agricultural economy. The state is committed to changing farming from a seasonal activity to an all year round one. Billions are expected as internally generated revenue with a creation of direct and indirect jobs for thousands of indigenes in Kebbi State and Nigeria as a whole. The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Nigeria says governors from eleven states have provided 5000 hectares of land each in their states, for the establishment of grazing reserves. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/RURAL-DEV.jpg The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Mr. Audu Ogbeh disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the upcoming retreat on Livestock and Dairy Development in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. He said the ministry wrote to states and eleven of them responded. The states are: Plateau, Kaduna, Kano, Gombe, Katsina, Taraba, Niger, Adamawa, Jigawa and Sokoto states. Mr. Audu Ogbeh said the Federal government was also working to settle herdsmen on grazing reserves. “If we can grass up these land areas, there will be no need for cows to roam from north to south and that is what we intend to achieve.” He further explained that government will make provisions on the grazing reserves for schools for the children of herdsmen, markets for their wives, health and security facilities to be made available for them. On the two day retreat, Mr. Ogbeh said the two day retreat is aimed at looking into how Nigeria can improve on the commercialization of the dairy and livestock industry in the country to boost food production and generate funds. “So far in Nigeria has an estimated 19.5 million cattle; 72.5 million goats; 41.3 million sheep; 7.1 million pigs; 278,840 thousand camels; 145 million chickens; 11.6m ducks, 2.1 million turkeys, and 974,499 thousand donkeys, making Nigeria the number one livestock producer with 31.66% cattle, 46.3% sheep, 51.11% pig and 99.38% poultry in West Africa”, he said. Mr. Ogbeh also decried the state of milk production in Nigeria “Our milk production is extremely poor with about 1 litre per cow per day compared to Brazil and Saudi Arabia of 30-40 litrs per cow per day. Saudi Arabia produces 4.7 million litres of milk daily while Nigeria imports about $1.3bn worth of milk annually to make up the deficit.” The Minister added that the way forward in improving the livestock and dairy industry is to intensifying efforts to add value to the industry along respective value chains. The two day upcoming retreat which has at its theme; “Setting an agenda for commercializing Livestock and Dairy commodity value chain in Nigeria, is scheduled to hold on the seventh and eighth of June in Abuja. Facebook is starting to think about a time when Mark Zuckerberg will no longer be its CEO. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/https-blueprint-api-production.s3.amazonaws.com-uploads-card-image-93468-Mark_Zuckerberg.jpg The company is asking shareholders to vote on a proposal that allows Zuckerberg’s majority voting control to be terminated if he steps down or no longer occupies a leadership position at Facebook. “These new terms thus ensure that we will not remain a founder-controlled company after we cease to be a founder-led company,” Facebook said in a proxy statement filed to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The proposal stipulates that if Zuckerberg were to resign or be fired for cause, his Class B shares would convert into Class A, which would grant him just one vote per share instead of 10. The terms would also prevent the CEO’s descendants from retaining control of the company through ownership of Class B stock. Zuckerberg currently owns 419 million Class B shares and 4 million Class A shares, which gives him 53.8% of total shareholder voting power. But he also holds an irrevocable proxy over Class B shares owned by co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, which boosts his control to 60%. Facebook (FB, Tech30) said it believes that finding a qualified CEO to replace Zuckerberg would be difficult if he retained Class B shares. Another reason for the change, the company said, is to encourage Zuckerberg to stick around. The potential loss of Class B shares could help prevent him from leaving and joining a competitor. In April, Facebook proposed issuing a new class of stock — Class C shares — that would help Zuckerberg keep control of the company for years to come. If approved, current owners of Class A and Class B shares would each be granted two Class C shares — which do not include voting rights. The move should allow Zuckerberg, who has announced that he intends to give most of his Facebook stock to charity, to donate shares without diluting his voting power. Corporate governance experts, however, warn that such structures — popular in Silicon Valley — may not be in the best interest of outside shareholders. Facebook shareholders will vote on the proposals at the company’s annual meeting on June 20. Source :http://www.barbaric.com.ng/facebook-plans-life-zuckerberg/ |
The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria [MMWG] has publicly condemned the new policy of Oyo state government on the privatisation of the post-primary schools in the state. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/ajimobi-daily-289x300.jpg Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim, the National Coordinator speaks on the issues: “The new plan of Oyo State Government to commercialise education by selling-out some post-primary educational institutions in the state is a move to set-back educational development of the state. The move which has further opened the administration of Governor Is-haq Ajimobi to criticism, is a way of Government shacking its educational responsibility. The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria [MMWG] see the new move as a way to hand-over public schools to Christian Missionaries with a view to return to pre-colonial era, where denial of religious freedom and worship were “the order of the day”. Students irrespective of their religion and the institution they attend, must be free to worship and practice their faith without any intimidation or coercion, in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Evils associated with Individuals or Missions running public educational Institutions are many. These include: [a] Lack of freedom of worship for students of different faiths. [b] Payment of exhorbitant school fees. [c] Lack of arts and science infrastructures in the schools for the benefit of the students. [d] Turning of education to commercial venture. [e] Sacking of Teachers under the pretext of lack of funds and [f] Problem of non-payment of retirement benefits of Teachers. In addition, Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff who are in the Oyo State Public Service would also face the dilemma of knowing their true employers as the new Proprietors will never accept to pay their entitlements if the new education policy is implemented; thereby throwing several families to bad economic hardship. The issue of hand-over of schools to Missionaries in the South West has continued to reccur simply because of some people who want to acquire Government Property illegally to boost their own business through inheritance of valuable Government assets. Others are interested in using connections they have to turn Government Schools to that of Missionaries for their own benefit. In the Country where religious freedom is part of our laws such a move would continue to fail as people know their rights. The MMWG therefore condemn the move to hand-over some Oyo State Post-Primary Institutions under whatever guise. The so called Public Private Partnership [PPP] Venture in running public schools is nothing but “a way for the Oyo Sate Government to abandon its duties and responsibilities to its people on education”. This is a total disservice to the people who voted the Government into power. We enjoin Governor Is-haq Ajimobi to rescind the decision without further delay and face his responsibility squarely by providing a qualitative education for his people and pay the Teachers salaries timely and regularly. Nowhere has education been privatised the way Ajimobi is planning to do it. It is not in the best interest of the people. You cannot hand-over schools to Missionaries and at the same time call it Public Private Partnership [PPP] Venture Source:http://www.barbaric.com.ng/muslim-group-condemns-new-oyo-state-education-policy/ |

The Ag Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Mustapha Magu has vowed to ensure that there is transparency and accountability in the use of the resources meant for internally displaced persons in Maiduguri, Borno State and elsewhere in the country. President Muhammadu Buhari is to flag-off the completed Abuja-Kaduna rail line valued at $1.04 billion in the first week of July 2016. https://www.barbaric.com.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Railway-feat-300x200.jpg The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi stated this in Abuja during a test-run tour to Kaduna State North-western Nigeria, emphasizing that when the commercial service commences, passengers will be required to have a national identity card or any other form of identification. “I am impressed with what I have seen today and I must say we are good to go. The reason why we have not started is because we have to also take into consideration the religious obligations of President Buhari so that we can also bring him to flag off the project. We are looking at the first week in July,” he said. The Transportation Minister further said, “The first two weeks of June will be used for test run of the track without passengers and the other two weeks will be used for another round of test run with passengers and it will be free of charge and by first week in July, we believe that the President will come and flag off for commercial activities and after that, anybody who boards will pay.” “The contract was initially awarded at the rate of $849,000 million but we used $1.04billion because we had to include fencing of the tracks from Abuja to Kaduna on both sides to prevent human and animals from crossing.” Identity While explaining further on the use of national identity cards, he said; “We will use national identity card because of security. We want to know who is boarding the train and who is not. They should all have forms of identification.” “I think the ministry of transportation should work with the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, to ensure that in every station, we have somebody from NIMC to register the passengers because we want to know where people live and who they are.” “We want to ensure that those who want to use the train have one form of identification or the other like drivers licence, international passport and others but we will not let those that we cannot identify.” The Minister however said that about 1000 police officers will man the rail tracks from Abuja to Kaduna daily to strengthen the security and safety of passengers Source:http://www.barbaric.com.ng/president-buhari-flag-off-abuja-kaduna-rail-line/ |
