johnkay1: why is diabetes, prostate cancer and Brest cancer seems to be the order of the day in this our generation? is it because of this gene mutation of a thing? The truth is that we are the cause of our own predicaments. In recent years, the human lifestyle has been so ridiculous, from addiction to tobacco, eating foods with lots of chemical preservatives, establishing industries that emit carcinogenic substances, to using devices that emit radiations. All these put together makes us more vulnerable to cancer, cos these carcinogenic substances in d atmosphere can change our genetic makeup. Its advised we take lots of fruits and reduce intake of preserved can foods. Talking about diabetes, nutrition first comes to mind too....we take 2much of starchy foods giving our insulin 2much work load cos there'll b 2much glucose to b converted to glycogen.....and when d insulin fails to keep up with d pace, we become diabetic cos it leaves us wit so much glucose in our system. Although some ppl naturally have inadequate insulin production.....(Dose ones no even need toomuch starchy food to get diabetes) Hope dis helped. |

Teempakguy: yes, but not so such a large extent as he described. One cannot write the entire DNA and make his child smarter just by 'acting smart' right? Yeah!! D chances are so little. I admire ur diversity in science. What field re u in, precisely? |
Science/Technology › Re: The Sciences Discussion Thread. by NDprudent(m): 8:39am On Jun 22, 2015 |
Teempakguy: because those acts . . . are a result of genes. You see, DNA can influence the way we act. But, the way we act cannot influence our DNA. I stand to disagree with u on this. I think the way we act can affect some stuff in our DNA by switching on/off of some genes....and there are some findings about silencer signals that re transferred 4rm somatic to sex cells b4 reproduction. Epigenetics explains it all. So saying dat it is not possible isn't correct...... I'll welcome more facts from u Thanks |

Science/Technology › Re: The Sciences Discussion Thread. by NDprudent(m): 7:43pm On Jun 21, 2015 |
Teempakguy: Hello.
Another way, yet, of looking at this is that cancer cells, due to genetic diversity, cannot be classified because each clone has a different genetic make up. It is not like malaria, in which, all the plasmodium have the same Genetic make up and can be finished off with a single drug. A cancer cell is essentially brand new and varies across each individual.
Dis should b the main point. Cancer cells re likely to have different genetic make up in different individuals. This genetic faults of cancer cells change with time making it uncontrollable by gene targeted drugs |

guyX: Mutations are caused by radiation. Everyone of these guys in the electromagnetic spectrum radio wave (common carrier: mobile phones), infra red( not sure if this guy causes mutation though), visible light( consisting of the colours of rainbow which is the colour of white light), ultraviolet ( common carrier: the sun), xray (common carrier: xray for hospitals. Dats y it isn't good to take many xray scans), gamma ray (this bastard killed the couple that discovered it: the curry couple)
Mutations can result in physical disabilities like being born without legs, having more or less fingers etc. Basically, any part on ur parent's DNA that didn't replicate a nose, leg, eye , etc parts, won't appear in you when you are born. How to avoid mutation: pray to God. Cause to can't avoid sun, or stop using phone etc of the aforementioned above(rays). Guy, ure making mutation sound scary Sorry 4 comin in late.....I commend d op and all d others that hav kept dis thread alive. Talkin abt mutaton and natural selection.....I read all posts and u were all making sense....but I must add. 1st of all, not all mutatns are heritable. Mutation could be autosomal (those that affects other cell other than d sex cells, and re non heritable) or germline mutation (affects sex cells..ie cells that produce offsprings). I read some1 say that a new species can't be formed through mutations.....m here to prove u wrong.......it is very possible.....rememba that a new species is formed when a mutated sp. gets so different from its parent sp. that interbreeding becomes impossible. It u nid a detailed explanation u let me knw (I don't enjoy typin long txts with my fone....but I'll do it) Thirdly, recent research has shown that it is possible for phenotype (outward appearance) of an organisn to change without change in DNA sequence....this occurs wen switches come into play and switch off d expression of a particular gene. This thread is just so great..........shalom! |

flyca: Friends, I'm a Master's degree student here in China, for those who will consider studying abroad. The country is still very receptive of foreign students. There are many scholarships you can apply for. Some schools give free tuition, especially for further studies. You can explore this option on line. I advise you to do it yourself, don't pay anyone a dime for it. Most schools have online correspondence.
Good Luck! I sent u a mail. Pls, send a reply |
