"I don't know why when anything good comes up in Akwa Ibom state, the Governor, Udom Emmanuel, will call me to take part in it.
“When he completed the longest flyover, he called me to commission it. I was very pleased to be the one to commission that very project.
“Upon completing this 29km road, he requested my presence. Today, again I am here to commission the longest, first class, dualised and well paved road with two cable bridges.
“Even Lagos state does not have two cable bridges but Akwa Ibom State is setting the pace. Governor, I thank you. This is commendable and worthy of emulation,” Obasanjo said.
Chief Obasanjo added that character is one of the attributes a good leader must exhibit and that Udom Emmanuel has them in quantum.
“You know leadership requires character. Anyone who knows Udom Emmanuel reasonably well, will know that he is a man of character. I have watched him over time.
“Another important characteristic of a leader is that he must be a man of his words. Whenever he says he will do a thing, he goes ahead to do it. Governor, you are truly a leader.
“In the part of the world where I come from, when you see a good man, the only encouragement you can give to him to tell him to keep doing what his doing. So, Governor, keep on doing what you are doing”, Obasanjo added.
Nigeria’s longest serving president underscored the importance of building infrastructure as it has the potency of triggering development and economic activities.
He urged the people who will make use of the road to take care of it as their personal properties and protect it.
“Infrastructure such as this are very critical to the triggering of development and economic activities. Like the former Governor of Gombe State said, public projects are people’s property not that of government. When a road like this is built to pass through the rural area, the benefitting communities must make maximum use and take advantage provided by such a critical infrastructure.
“Please make good use of the road, take care of it as your personal properties and protect it.” Obasanjo advised.
He further said that as farmers, traders and whatever the benefitting communities are engaged in, that the provision of the road has created an opportunity for them to do more.
Governor Emmanuel thanked God for the completion of the cost-intensive project which, he said, was one of the indicators that his administration could still make impact despite intense economic downturns, several recessions, coronavirus pandemic and other policy related factors.
He said the Etinan-Ndon Eyo road is an unprecedented feat, being the longest single stretch in the state, with two cable-stayed bridges of 80 metres each and thanked the former President for his encouragement to continue with the project when it was most challenging and for making out time to come and inaugurate upon it completion.
The former President who stopped over at the Ekpene Ukpa cable-stayed bridge in Etinan Local Government Area, was greeted with a rousing ovation by a mammoth crowd of youths led by some frontline stakeholders of the area.
Speaking on behalf of the Etinan people, former state Chairman of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party and Etinan Federal Constituency candidate for the 2023 House of Representatives election, Obong Paul Ekpo, recalled how, as the then PDP Chairman, the project was his major campaign promise for the governor's second term election in 2019 and said it was a day of fulfilment for him and Etinan people to witness the inauguration.
Obong Paul Ekpo thanked Governor Emmanuel on behalf of Etinan people and extolled the present condition of the road and the socioeconomic value it has for Akwa Ibom people, adding that the relief of its current state has almost eroded the memory of its former troubling state.
The Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Professor Eno Ibanga , while presenting an overview of the project, described the road as a masterpiece and a gateway for investors.
According to him, the 29Km dual carriage road has 10.3m width on each carriage which provides for three lanes, with 13 outfall drains totalling 6.3Km, a 1.3Km underground drain emptying into Ekpene Ukpa river and 2 cable-decorated bridges at Mkpok and Ekpene Ukpa.
The Paramount Ruler of Onna, Edidem Raymond Inyang, thanked Governor Emmanuel for his intervention.
The project, he said, has brought together the people of sister clans of Oniong, Nung Ndem and Awa that make up Onna LGA, who were hitherto kept far apart by the poor condition of the road.

The Managing Director of Hensek Integrated Services, Engineer Uwem Okoko on Wednesday, conducted Journalists who visited the road project alongside some media aides of the Governor around the project.
Engr. Uwem Okoko explained that the road is made up of more than 5km drainage tunnel and 10lane, 9.5 km dual carriage.
“The tunnel is all the way from Ifa to Ibesikpo and underneath, 7m deep is a flood control tunnel, that is why before you used to see flood at the Timber market road but you can’t see the flood at Ifa basin, His Excellency, awarded this contract not only to de-flood ring road three but also neighbouring communities".
While thanking Governor Udom Emmanuel for the confidence reposed in Hensek Integrated Services as the contractor to deliver the projects, Engr. Uwem Okoko revealed, that “this road is designed to last a lifetime”.
“The concept of the median was designed by His Excellency , ‘Engineer’ Udom Emmanuel when he came in 2021 for a road inspection, he said the median is wide and we can turn it into a jogging lane for people and have protection, we incorporated it into the design "

Akwaibomdaily: The process has commenced for the emergence of twenty indigenous automobile engineers who would be trained in Israel to constitute the first batch of staff members employed in the MIMSHAC car assembly plant located in Itu local government area of the state.
MIMSHAC, an automobile company partnering with the State for the Car Factory, is currently conducting practical interviews for qualified automobile engineers who would be further equipped with the necessary skills required for car assemblage in the plant.
This practical interview comes after the engineers were properly put through the theoretical aspect of the assessment process.
The Chief Executive Officer of MIMSHACK, Mr. Valentino Nnaemeka Okorie stated that the practical interview was conducted to select qualified automobile engineers for the training that would take place in Israel.
He lauded Governor Udom Emmanuel for facilitating the seamless establishment of the first automobile assembling plant in the Niger Delta region of Africa.
Mr. Okorie said that the company will establish the first fully-automated oil filtering manufacturing factory in Africa in addition to the car assembling plant which according to him, will employ over three thousand Akwa Ibom indigenes.
MIMSHAC's Israeli partner, Mr Ronen Golan, appreciated Governor Udom Emmanuel for affording them the opportunity to invest in Akwa Ibom which he is particularly proud of and assured the press that the assembling of automobiles will begin in earnest at the plant in November 2022.
Mr Okorie said that MIMSHAC constructed the plant in partnership with the Isreali to ensure they transfer their technology to the qualified engineers who will work at the plant.
He assured the engineers that MIMSHAC intends to source for consumables and furniture locally from small and medium-scale businesses.
The automobile engineers who hail from Akwa Ibom, expressed satisfaction at the professionalism of the practical interview process and thanked Governor Emmanuel for establishing the car assembling plant which will provide employment opportunities for them.

Akwaibomdaily: Eighteen communities spread across three local government areas of Akwa Ibom State, Tuesday celebrated respite from the plague of perennial flooding of over twenty years, as the state government inaugurated the 10Km IBB and Environs Flood Control Project as part of activities to mark the state's 35th anniversary.
Inaugurating the project, Delta State Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa who was accompanied by the immediate past Governor of Cross River State Liyel Imoke, lauded the courage and ingenuity of Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, in embarking on such a humongous project.
Drawing from his experience on a similar project, Okowa asserted that the amount of money sunk into the project, if used for road construction, could deliver several kilometers of road that would attract a lot of praises and applauses.
He therefore commended Governor Emmanuel for the passion and selflessness exhibited in undertaking the drainage project and for the 10 portable water schemes for communities whose water sources were affected by the project, saying that such passion is indicative of the hallmark of a leader that cares for its people.
He lauded the people of the state for standing by Governor Emmanuel in his seven years of leadership in the state.
"There is a project that is lasting and impactful and only great men can do such projects because they think about today and the future.
“If he was thinking about today only, he would rather push that money into doing several kilometers of road, but he looked into the future and to conquer the future for the people of Akwa Ibom, he undertook this project.
“Only a bold, courageous and caring leader will do this kind of project", Okowa stated.
"I want to appreciate you my brother for this great thing that you have done for your people and I know that by the special grace of God, there's a lot more for you to do not only for Akwa Ibom but for our nation Nigeria. As Chairman of the Presidential Campaign Council, the governor of Akwa Ibom State, I'm very sure, is capable, courageous and knowledgeable to lead the PDP to victory in 2023", he added.
The Vice Presidential hopeful described Governor Emmanuel as one who thinks and does big things, expressing his delight to associate with him.
"I'm glad to be his friend. I'm glad to be associated with a man who thinks big and is able to execute projects the way they ought to be executed and with what I see here today, he will also help to export this kind of thought and boldness and courage to Nigeria".
The host governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, explained that the State Government and World Bank collaborative project, through the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, NEWMAP, was meant to provide a permanent and comprehensive solution to the decades-long problem that has barred the IBB Avenue, it's adjourning streets, surrounding communities from socioeconomic advantage and appreciated all the partners involved in the project and the cooperation of the communities during the work.
The National Project Coordinator of NEWMAP, Dr. Salihu Dahiru, commended the Udom Emmanuel led government for being outstandingly committed to the development of his state.
He said the IBB project was the largest undertaken by NEWMAP across the nation and that Akwa Ibom emerged the best in counterpart funding and other NEWMAP indices across the country.
Presenting an overview of the project, the Commissioner for Environment and Solid Mineral, Mr. Charles Udoh, said the design provides for drainage channels to form a canal to convey storm water in the entire catchment area of 8.4Km, with reinforced outfall drains of 0.3Km and 0.6Km of Gabion/Reno mattresses.
These, he added, are accompanied by about 1Km grass channel, 15 road crossing culverts, 2 stream crossings at downstream areas, 10 mini water schemes, perimeter fencing/guard rails at open drain sections among others.
Paramount Ruler of Uyo, Edidem Sylvanus Okon, speaking on behalf of residents of the benefitting communities, thanked Governor Emmanuel for embarking on the project, noting that residents of the area hitherto displaced by the erosion have now returned to their houses.

Nellyvin: Former Vice President of Nigeria and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has congratulated the government and people of Akwa Ibom State on their 35th anniversary of state creation and has lauded the progress of the state under the impactful leadership of Governor Udom Emmanuel.
Alhaji Abubakar, gave the commendation on Friday, during the anniversary celebration of the State, held at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.
The former Vice President acknowledged that in the past 35 years, the state has witnessed an unprecedented socio-economic growth in all sectors, lauding the developmental strides of Governor Udom Emmanuel, through the people-oriented projects to set the pace for others to emulate.
Represented by the Governor of Sokoto State, and Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Aminu Tambuwal, Alhaji Abubakar congratulated Akwa Ibom people for marking 35 years of development and capacity building, calling on all to support the Governor to succeed.
“Alhaji Atiku Abubakar celeberates with Akwa Ibom State at 35 and he commends the Governor of Akwa Ibom State Udom Emmanuel for the good work that he has been doing in Akwa Ibom State.
“We are seeing progress, we are seeing development in virtually all the spheres in life under your leadership in Akwa Ibom State.
“The expectations from Akwa Ibom people therefore, according to him, is continuous support for Governor Emmanuel and the PDP, and prayers for the governor to end well, finish strong and be succeeded by a man that will sustain the pace of development in the state.”
Observing that the state has fared well under the leadership of the PDP, the party's Presidential hopeful urged the people of the state to remain steadfast in the support for the party and be hopeful that the PDP will take over at the center in 2023.
On the ongoing internal fued in the PDP, the Alhaji Abubakar said, "yes, we must acknowledge that we are having internal family issues, but be rest assured ...that we are not involved or engaged in the war of attrition. It is a political disagreement and very soon, all of that will be resolved and the PDP will continue to remain strong and strong, and grow untill we win the election, by the grace of God, come February 2023".
Chief Host of the event, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, took the people through a thanksgiving session in acknowledgement of God's help to the state over the thirty-five years of existence.
He further extolled the successive heads of governments and leaders of the state from creation for their contributions in building a strong Akwa Ibom and taking the state through phases of growth.
Governor Emmanuel expressed hope that Akwa Ibom will be better off with the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as President in the upcoming election.
"Akwa Ibom this time around shall not be forgotten, Akwa Ibom shall not be left behind, Akwa Ibom will be in the forefront of everything in Nigeria. We shall be in the forefront of development.

In a message of goodwill, former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki, congratulated the governor and Akwa Ibom people on the 35th anniversary celebrations, describing the governor as a pacesetter whose performance leaves no one in doubt of his passion to develop the state.
The former and last military governor of Akwa Ibom State, Group Capt. John Ebiye (rtd.) stated that Akwa Ibom State has been consistently progressing through successive administrations, particularly commending the crop of leaders the state has had in present democracy that began in 1999 and the improvements by the present administration under Mr. Udom Emmanuel, and expressed hope that the next administration will sustain the trend.
