This is an overview of domain flipping and investing.

This is STRICTLY for beginners. As you gain experience, you can evolve.


Step 1: Know What to Buy

(Beginner advice) Do not buy random words or your own invented brand names. If you are starting out, you need to buy names that already have obvious buyers.

Stick to the Geo-Service Model.
Format: `[City or State] + [Service].com`

* Good: MiamiPlumbers.com, TexasLandscaping.com, DenverRoofing.com
* Bad: SuperFastPlumbers4U.com (Too long, has alphanumeric pattern)

The Radio Test: If you say the name out loud on the radio, will people know exactly how to spell it? If yes, it’s a good name. Avoid hyphens, numbers, and easily misspelled words. Always stick to `.com` when starting out.

Step 2: Research the Name

Before you spend a dime, verify that the name actually has value or useable potential on the internet.

1. Check DotDB.com: Type your keyword in here. It tells you how many other extensions (like .net, .org, .co) are registered for that exact name. If a name is registered in 10 other extensions, the .com is highly valuable.
2. Check ExpiredDomains.net: This is a search engine for domains that previous owners forgot to renew. You can find older names here that already have some history.

Step 3: Register the Domain for Cheap

Never overpay for a registration. A standard `.com` should cost you around $10 or less for the first year.

Go to Tldes.com. This is a comparison tool that shows you which registrar currently has the lowest price for the extension you want.
Once you find the cheapest price, create an account and buy the domain. Popular, reliable registrars include Spaceship, Namecheap, and Dynadot.

Step 4: Set Up Your Storefront (Sales Lander)

When someone types your new domain into their browser, they shouldn't see a blank page. They should see a professional "This Domain is For Sale" page.

1. Create a free seller account on platforms like Afternic, Sedo, or Atom.
2. Add your domain to your account.
3. Change your domain's "Nameservers" at your registrar to point to the marketplace. (The marketplace will give you the exact nameservers to copy and paste).
4. Now, anyone who visits the domain can buy it directly from that page.

Step 5: Hunt Down the Buyer (Outbound Marketing)

You can wait for buyers to come to you, but if you want to make money fast, you have to go to them.

If you own AtlantaPaving.com, go to Google and search for paving companies in Atlanta. Look for businesses using terrible, long domain names (like: JimsPavingAndSonsAtlanta.net). These are examples of your targets.

Find the boss: Never email `info@` or `support@`. Go to LinkedIn or use a tool like Hunter.io to find the email address of the CEO, Owner, or Marketing Director.

Step 6: Send a Simple Pitch

Business owners are busy. Do not send them a long essay. Make it short, punchy, and clear.

Subject line: Atlanta Paving

(Sample body text)

Hi [Name],
I noticed you operate in the Atlanta paving space. I currently own AtlantaPaving.com and I'm looking to sell it.
I'm reaching out to a few local firms before listing it publicly. Let me know if acquiring this asset is something you'd be open to discussing.
Best,
[Your Name]

Step 7: Price It Right

You bought it for $10. Don't ask for $10,000. (this advice is for beginners).

For quick outbound flips, price your domains between $299 and $999. Why? Because this amount is low enough for a business owner to put on a company credit card without needing to call a board meeting. It makes it an easy impulse buy.

As much as you can, try to let the buyer make the first offer if possible, or price it 20% higher than your actual goal so you have room to negotiate.

Step 8: Close the Deal Safely

It is unsafe to send a domain to a buyer before you get paid.

When a buyer agrees on a price, create a "Buy It Now" link using Afternic, Atom, or Sedo. Send this link to the buyer. The platform will handle the secure checkout, take their small commission, and ensure you get paid safely.

Important Note: The 60-Day Lock
When you register a new domain, ICANN (the internet's governing body) locks it for 60 days. It cannot be transferred to a different registrar during this time.

If you sell a domain within its first 60 days, you must do a "Push."
Simply tell the buyer to create a free account at your current registrar (for example, Spaceship). You can then "push" the domain from your Spaceship account directly into their Spaceship account. This happens instantly and completely bypasses the 60-day lock.

This is a $100+ lecture note. Infact, this is the best write up I've seen regarding this business.

Auctions are crazy nowadays and I too wonder if I bid with bots or people with excess money. I just set my max proxy bid and leave.

But one thing I've learnt is that most of those names don't get sold at their closing prices. There's a loophole that'll enable 'winners' pay a fraction of the winning bid.

I'm sure I lost Bold/motion with proxy at $105 this evening to such tactics where the winner will pay less than that amount for the name.

Those guys normally have two accounts, if the real account bids 200 dol, the fake account immediately bid a ridiculous amount maybe like 8k dol. Then nobody will bid again till auction closes.
The fake account will not pay till the deadline, then godaddy will contact the next highest bidder (200 dol). Therefore the person ends up buying it for 200 dol as against the 8k dol. That's the game.

It is the SLD that makes an alternative TLD worth something.
It is also the SLD that can make a decent TLD totally worthless.
