Hello its Mr. Newbeginings If you are not following me on nairaland, you better hit the follow button you would miss more updates like this.. Facebook grew at 10 times the rate of nairaland.. or was it 100 times... Within 1 year it had as much members nairaland does in over 10 years.. So what is the secret... It could help your business Mark Zuckerberg knew some startup would build the largest social network in the world. He just didn’t think it would be Facebook. “It wasn't even a question that I asked—of course it wasn't going to be us.” Yet, living by his famous mantra, “move fast and break things,” Zuckerberg and his team scaled Facebook into social network that today connects 1.8 billion people. But it wasn’t just this quick-moving philosophy that helped Zuckerberg build a multi-billion dollar company. Important strategies and approaches gave the team the focus it needed to grow and bring that mantra to life. Zuckerberg discusses those approaches in the latest episode of Masters of Scale, a 10-episode podcast hosted by Reid Hoffman, the LinkedIn co-founder and Greylock partner, a show that explores unconventional theories for growth. Related: In a Rare Interview, Mark Zuckerberg Opens Up About His First Social Network, ZuckNet In his conversation with Hoffman, Zuckerberg shares his strategies for scale as well as what other entrepreneurs can learn. Below are excerpts from this chat -- as well as anecdotes not included in this week’s podcast -– published first on Entrepreneur. 1. Have conviction -- you’ll need it. When Facebook first rolled out its News Feed, the features that allows people to see updates of your friends’ activities, the public didn’t welcome the change with open arm “There were a lot of people who were voicing concerns about it,” Zuckerberg recalls. Indeed, in a post last year celebrating 10 years of the News Feed feature, Ruchi Sanghvi, the woman who oversaw News Feed, describes the backlash a little bit more vividly. “We launched News Feed in the dead of the night. We were popping Champagne bottles, celebrating while watching the logs scroll by, she wrote on Facebook. We had no idea what was about to hit us the next morning. We woke up to hundreds of thousands of outraged people. Facebook groups like ‘I hate newsfeed,’ and ‘Ruchi is the devil’ had formed in the middle of the night. News reporters and students were camped out in front of the offices. We had to sneak out of the back door to leave the office.” Despite the criticism, Zuckerberg and his team knew they were onto something. “It just comes down conviction—how much you believe in that thing,” he tells Hoffman, adding, “We really believed that this was a good thing—not just me, but the whole team that was working on it.” And they were right. The engagement numbers went up dramatically after the feature launched – and News Feed continues to be a major pillar in the Facebook experience. Having convictions -- and knowing why they’ll help you grow -- can help you decide when to listen to feedback and when to wait out the critics. 2. Test, test, test. Facebook doesn’t guess -- it tests, all to ensure it delivers the best possible experience to users. For instance, on even given day, Facebook can run up to 10,000 different versions of the social-media network to measure how many people are sharing and connecting, along with how much revenue the site is generating. “Giving people the tools to be able to go get that data, without having to argue whether their idea’s good through layers of management before testing something, frees people up to move quicker,” he says. That swiftness helps staffers move forward -- so they can get more feedback. “We have this saying at Facebook that ‘done’ is better than ‘perfect’—that's the idea,” Zuckerberg tells Hoffman. “Having something that you can get feedback from the community on, so you can start to learn whether you're even going in the right direction at all, is much better than trying to polish something up completely.” Related: Check Out a New Podcast Hosted by Reid Hoffman -- And Join the Conversation on Entrepreneur.com 3. Create a framework for innovation. Facebook’s shift to mobile was rocky -- and taught the company how to plan for transitions. “We got off to a bad start,” says Zuckerberg. “Our initial impulse was to try to make mobile more like the thing that we knew, which was the web.” But while working both on mobile and rolling out new features on desktop, the team couldn’t get the new experience right. “We made what was a pretty hard decision at the time, which was basically, ‘No new features for two years’ -- which is kind of a crazy thing to think about,” he says. “In general it was just full speed ahead on building the simple mobile app.” To transition his team into this new strategy, Zuckerberg provided training and set strict rules for pitching new ideas. “Anytime you come in for a product review, you need to show me the mobile version first or I’m going to kick you out of my office,” he recalls telling employees. Being clear about expectations can keep staffers focused while planning for big transitions. 4. Build a team for the long term. Most members of Facebook’s leadership team grew into their current roles, says Zuckerberg. “Ten of the folks who are the management team of the company basically grew into these roles from doing different things—everything from, one woman started as an executive assistant, and now is running our growth team, and another person started as an engineer and now is running a huge product group, and ran HR along the way,” says Zuckerberg. There’s an efficiency to this approach, of course. “By the time that you build this management team of people who have been in the company, they've all been working together, and they know how to get things done—and there's good trust, and good alignment on values,” he says. Related: LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman: To Scale, Do Things That Don't Scale But internal hires are also a powerful way to shape the company and the culture for the long term. Says Zuckerberg, “It sends the signal to everyone else in the company that they can be those people in a few years, if they do good work and really excel.” 5. Hire people better than you. The difference between good companies and great companies lie in the hires, says Zuckerberg. He says better companies have founder who are confident enough to surround themselves with stronger talents. To this end, Zuckerberg has developed a simple rule: Never hire someone you wouldn’t work for. “If the tables were turned, and you were looking for a job, would you be comfortable working for this person?” he says. ”I basically think that if the answer to that is no, then you're doing something expedient, but you're not doing as well as you can on that.” This approach ensures new hires help the company evolve. “There are things that Sheryl, for example, is just much stronger than me at—and that makes me better, and makes Facebook better,” he says. “I am not afraid or threatened by that—I value that.” This article was written by Andrea Huspeni and edited by Mr. Newbeginings cc: lalasticlala |

Hello Guys it is Mr. Newbeginning It has been long since I posted an update and I am sure everyone needs one due to the state of the Country at the moment.. You wouldn't believe the excuse they gave about power supply in the nation. Also, those looking for where to get capital should try BOI, it is great and it offers in any amount of your choice including millions.. I have been moving about on nairaland and I have made some very good friends.. I have done collaborations with some notable nairalanders and also seen some really fun people.. Notable mentions Paul Samuel - FitnessDoctor - He goes by the moniker FitnessDoctor and is really making it in the health niche.. This man is more than just a Health blogger, he builds your body from his experience and that is one of the reasons I subscribed to his blog, although I have not bought any of his ebooks yet!!.. I always look forward to his post.. You should search for him on nairaland. Lefulefu - He goes by the moniker Lefulefu and is a really funny dude.. I always look forward to a funny comment from him and he is getting it good with the ladies. Vikiylove - I think this lady opened her account recently and the next thing she did was to attack guys calling them broke.. Although I think she might be smart due to her other kinds of posts... But according to some guys, it might be a guy behind the moniker. But who am I to judge. Smellymouth - He is too popular to be describecd Airforce1/IamAirforce - He is an entrepreneur of a kind, going for the overcrowded music niche. He is already making it with over 10,000 followers on instagram (according to him).. And he might build something that will last. TrapQueen77 - I sincerely like to see the lady behind this moniker, because she is more sexually than any other nairalander... maybe her life is lonely and she barely gets to meet any men and so she decides to vent her fantasies here on nairaland.. These are some the amazing people I have seen on nairaland... Two are entrepreneurs going deep (Paul Samuel and Airforce).. While others keep the forum alive.. Don't worry I wasn't just going through nairaland for the whole day... I was also doing research and promoting my own line of work... Updates coming up.. |
Essentials1:This is a very serious matter and you are joking with it |
FitnessDoctor:I will of course... stylishly |
Since it is something coming from you @fitnesdoctor... I am sure it will be good enough to save my nose from the odours that go through it daily |
Kentura:I didn't mean to be little you by my statement... I am sorry if you felt that way |
Kentura:Children of this generation really have no respect... They see advice and claim that he is hustling to sell his blog.. Do you think he is one of those hungry bloggers hustling to make money? |

Hello my name is Mr. Newbeginings This article has appeared on nairaland before and was written by the Highly Respected FitnesDoctor, although I wanted to draw you guys attention to this because the article was not only written by him.. I myself was a co-writer of this article. Unfortunately, credits were not given to me for my contribution. I believe it might be a miscalculation and was not deliberate as I hold FitnesDoctor in high esteem.. Here are 5 Habits That Will Make You Poor For Life Hello my name is Paul Samuel, your favorite Health Blogger Living a great life is everyone's dream. Everyone wishes to be successful or at least have a taste of it. Having to wake up, to a beautiful house, being your own boss, and being able to control whatever happens to your financially is a dream I have been woken up from so many times. Everyday in life, we make decisions that will either spiral our lives off course or keep it moving smoothly. I remember making a lot of wrong decisions that cost me a lot of money. I remember wondering what was wrong with me. Blaming every spiritual power possible. I was suppose to be making more progress, but my decisions were always leading me to dead ends and set backs. I finally looked real deep into my lifestyle, nodded my head and said "Health is truly Wealth". There were some habits that I was exhibiting that were actually affecting my decisions and making me lose a lot. Also these habits were making me settle for less, below my standards and pray to God for hope to get there one day. Many of us must have been through such situations, whereby you have to lower your standards, just because things are either crashing or slowing down. Here I will share the 5 habits that if not changed will either make you poor for life or make you lower your standards just to make ends meet. 1. Overstimulating your brain Overstimulating your brain a.k.a multitasking is a negative habit that could cost you a lot. In my "How to Fall Asleep In One Minute" ebook, I talked about the effects of this on your sleep, but it can do much more. Overstimulation happens when you are reading a book and taking constants peeps at the Tv, or when you are cleaning and then you drop it for another activity or another. You are doing your home work and checking your social media messages. Or like when I was writing this article and watching CNN. In the end it takes you longer to finish one activity. So what I am saying here is that when you are thinking about or doing too many things at once, it makes it harder for your brain to concentrate on the most important thing and really think or work it through. Students can agree to this that when you are reading in a noisy place, it is not easy to capture any useful information. I recommend that you please drop this habit. No matter how important both things are, always do one first. You might think that by doing both of them you are actually buying time. But I tell you that you will miss a lot of information and create a lot of loopholes which will come back to hunt you long term. 2. Lack of Adequate Sleep Sleep is very important. Lack of adequate sleep is the reason why most hustlers are still hustling up till today. They will claim that "how can they be sleeping while their mates are making money?". When you have an ambition and you have knowledge about how to get there, then you need to make a plan. Sleep right influences your ability to make the right decisions and plans, because your brain will be 100% ready to make sure you come out with the best results. But when you play with your sleep e.g Sleeping from 2am till 10am or from 12am till 4am, then you should be ready to really struggle and strive, because your brain is seriously working hard and not getting enough rest. Imagine if you had to work from Monday to Sunday, 8am - 11pm, everyday. The reason why such kind of jobs don't exist is because it is not possible to be productive with such. In the same way if you can't get the best quality of sleep and I don't mean just any kind of sleep, then you can't make the best decisions. Lack of adequate sleep makes hustling harder (i.e for people that hustle smartly) 3. Working With Emotions Instead of Working With Knowledge Every human being has emotions which sometimes influence our actions. But for some people it is a way of life. They think with the way they feel instead of what they have learnt and understood. Sometimes listening to your emotions can be great but if you add knowledge to it, then you have a bigger, better package. Your emotions should not determine your decisions, because emotions changes constantly. I remember walking through a passage 3 times just because I felt I was I was missing something. Sometimes I was right, but most times I was just wrong and this back and forth decision making affected me a lot. It makes it easier for you to doubt yourself when you just feel you are not moving far or fast enough. With knowledge, you will be able to make better decisions and know what you are missing this way. You will create a list of everything you could need to move with and when the day comes you will just be ticking the items you have secured on the list. It is that simple and easy. 4. Hardwork equal to Success If you can understand the illustration in the image above then you can just skip this to number 5. If not then read on. It is a normal norm that if you work hard you will definitely succeed. A quote goes thus I found out that the harder I work, the more lucky I get But you and I know that so many hardworking people today are barely living above the poverty line. Because, something those successful entrepreneurs fail to reveal to you is that smart planning plus hardwork equal to success. No matter how much quality time or how much physical energy or how much brain storming you put into your project, if there is no smart plan behind it then you are no different from a truck pusher who really works harder than a member of the House of the Senate (but who gets paid more?). Plan smart. Don't jump in to put your energy and focus into it until the plan is good enough. You might be struggling at a certain business and then someone decides to do the same business and his own will have so much progress. That guy must have looked at you and seen your loopholes, made plans on how he would make it. Added his own ideas and today he is one step ahead. 5. Sticking to the plan throughout. I think I should call this an ideology rather than a habit, but some people are very fond of sticking to a plan they made months or years ago. In reality, people grow and change is inevitable, you are not the same person who made those plans months or years ago, you have grown in knowledge, you have made mistakes and learnt, you have struggled and you have tasted either success or / and setbacks. Every time I gain more knowledge, I always reshape my plans, this makes it easier for me to see brighter and more achievable goals. There is nothing wrong with the initial plan, but you can agree with me that when you were young you said you wanted to become a pilot, that was the dream and the plan.. Today what are you? Try applying this to every part of your life and you will see a change, just like I have seen in mine. Remember my hashtag #speakingfromexperience. Stay Healthy, Stay Wise. I said above that I wanted to create the same environment that enabled Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to succeed.. I am not here to empower youths but to create an environment that will empower them and their entrepreneurial skills |
