Now I get you. You bought into an estate with external convenant. You may change the interior but NOT external design in keeping with the character of the estate.

There are FOUR places you can situate the stairs and non are outdated. But the decision is yours to make. To help you decide, I have attached four different stairs designs:

Pic 1
Is the vaulted ceiling approach. The stairs are in the sitting room. The implication is visitors downstairs can see the household going about their business upstairs. And so much room space is lost to the vaulted ceiling.

Pic 2
This is the classical Nigeria design. The stairs are in the sitting room. The implication is you must go through the sitting room to access upstairs.

Pic 3
Here the stairs are in the kitchen. The implication is the kitchen must be very big (roomy). So you use the kitchen as kitchen-dinner. This is very popular in the USA.

Pic 4
The stairs are in the hallway not in the sitting room. From the pic, when you come through the main entrance door, the stairs are facing you and to your right there is a door to the sitting area and the kitchen. The implication is household members can access upstairs without going through the sitting area and you have a very nice hallway. Another advantage of this is visitors don't come through the main entrance door straight into the sitting area. They are received first by the hallway and ushered in to the sitting area. This is very popular in England.

The decision is yours.

Thank you so much diordaves I so much appreciate this

When you say "we are building a duplex" how do you mean? Do you mean you are already building like you have done foundation and all but now want to implement the staircase? Or you are in the pre-planning stage like putting together the architectural and structural drawings?

If you are already building, where did your architectural drawing situate the staircase? Or are you building without architectural/structural drawings? If you are only at the pre-planning stage and about to commission the architectural drawing, it is what YOU want that counts when it comes to the floor plan of the duplex. It is not the remit of your engineer to advice what is "outdated" as this is a matter of personal choice. Architecture is not like clothing fashion that could be outdated. Architecture could belong to a particular era but not outdated. I'm currently looking back to build those old Ikoyi colonial houses (architecture) as a retirement home. Now tell me that is outdated.

Now if the staircase is not within the remit of the sitting room, where is the "modern" position your engineer is proposing? Is your engineer an architect? Decide what you want and how you want it and instruct your engineer to implement it.

Actually it's an Estate and they have their plan the initial plan wasn't in the sitting Room but we are allowed to change the interior but not the exterior. so from the foundation it was changed, now we are at German floor level .

Newmercies,if you keep listening to what ''mums with super children '' tell you,you will not like what you will seeooo.

Is your child in an environment where he is exposed to other kids his age and not just a learning environment? Is he your first?I ask because we have copied the oyibo''mind ur biz lifestyle'' but didnt take cognizance of the fact that they sometimes take their kids to playgrounds and parks to play with others not only on Xmas or boxing day undecided undecided

Im telling you because i was exactly in your shoes with my first son.very quiet estate,we were alwways alone.2 yrs plus, only the word water was heard from him.
But when we relocated and i dropped him with my mum,2 weeks after he was stuttering and 3 mths later, led his class in their xmas carol. He could say 3 words at once frm then.

If you are not convinced, see a paed or speech therapist other than that keeping them indoors doesnt help some of them especially the firstborns who dont have someone close to their age to relate with.
Cartoons,toys and tabs arent humans

Yes he's my first and no one to play with. Tnx for your response.

calm down. don't allow fear to overtake you. when my son clocked 2, he couldn't say any word at all even when my cousin's son who was younger had started calling the names of all the people in their house. we enrolled him in pre-kg plus we downloaded several children rhymes and educational applications for him. he's going to be 3 soon and he still doesn't say any household word apart from "daddy", "mummy" "no". but he can read count 1-10, read A-Z fluently as well as the nursery rhymes they teach him in school. my mum says it's because there are no children for him to play with at home. seeing a paed will set your mind at ease but i know there's nothing wrong with your son

Thanks dear.. Actually he doesn't have anyone to play with at home and in my compound

Mumiteoluwa:
Newmercies it is well with you ma. You can try Garki hospital, Maitama District Hospital or the Teaching hospital in Gwagwalada.
I totally agree with you comtem2011 as regards the issue of tongue tie mama's pls let's always be sure by seeing a specialist before removing anything. A lot has been said as regards this on Ask the paediatrician group on facebook.

Jazzyjazz please recommend hospital with a good paed

Hi Mama, just breathe, it is well. First off mummy and daddy is actually hard especially for a first child who has no-one to show him by example. Is he making any sounds? If there is a need, the Paed will recommend a speech therapist who can help. Most speech issues can be solved with early detection

That's my fear again. Could It be that he was misdiagnosed. Lord have mercy.

comtem2011:
It is well ma, God will touch him and make him perfect and he will never be a source of sorrow to you.

I want to emphasize on this issue of tongue tie, Did you take him to the specialist to really confirm that he has a tongue tie?

I want to use myself as an example here, when my son was 1 yr plus, we went for a birthday party. A lady saw my son and said he has a tie tongue. This is a child that have started calling Daddy and Mummy. She was so sure of herself. Lo and behold, the panic just came from no where. I was so disturbed that I started asking everyone at the party to help me check. I later went to one woman that has 3 adults to help me check. She took us to her office and examine the child. She asked him to bring out his tongue which he did with guidance, ask him to raise the tongue too. Then she told me my son is not having tie tongue. But she said to remove all fear, I should take him to the hospital for examination. I went to a nurse who confirmed that there's nothing of such. I keep checking for like 6 months before I forgot about it.

Now to my daughter, one Grandma came to greet us and the next thing was to be monitoring my baby's mouth as she is crying. The next thing that came out from her mouth was the girl has small tie tongue. Spree, I went on Google search to see pictures of tie tongue , all the pictures I saw has nothing to do with my girl. My sister's mind was not at rest. Ok n getting to the office the second day, she went straight to a Dr and the Dr asked her some questions which are:

1. Is the baby's voice audible while crying?
2. Can the baby suck well?
3. Is the baby bringing out the tongue?
The answer to these questions is Yes.

Then, she told her my baby doesn't have tie tongue.
I called my nurse friend that took her delivery, she asked same thing. She even told me that with the kind of examination they did that day on her, they would have discovered she has it.

I went to the nurses at the immunisation center to ask too. They pinched her and come and see cry with loud voice. They confirmed she doesn't have it too.

That's how I was able to overcome my fear.

The Dr told my sis so many people are cutting what they are not suppose to cut there by causing harm to those babies.

Reason for my epistle is to always seek second opinion on this tie tongue issue before cutting it out.

What I know as tie tongue is that the baby won't be able to lift/move at all.

Note: Try University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada. I think they have specialists there.

Once again, the Almighty God will everything that concerneth him to be perfect.

Sorry for my long epistle.

Life is not easy and to be a mother is not an easy job at all, from one challenge to another. It was noisy breathing before and when I took him to hospital they found out he has tonsilities and we did surgery few months ago
Now he's 2years and he has not started talking even to say mummy or daddy. Right now I am freaking out. A friend of mine came to visit me yesterday and after seeing the way he makes noise she called me after she left that she's worried about my son, pls i don't want to think the unthinkable.what do I do, which hospital will i take him to in Abuja. Let me not forget to say that when we went for circumcision they said he has tongue tie and was removed. Pls help an d advice a worried mum.God bless us all.

Thanks for the tips. God bless.

Graciouscharis:

Hello mama, go and buy glucose. Add it to his food and water. Keep your baby well hydrated. Offer both the glucose water and normal water. It is possible the baby has a viral infection. The antibiotics may not help.

Fever in children is not necessarily bad as we always assume. When children develop fever, it is the way their body fights off infection by producing heat to burn off the bacteria/virus.
If you have taken an antibiotics and cleared of malaria, as long as the temperature is under 40*C and the child is above 6 months with no underlying medical condition,it’s not a red flag.

My son just came out of this yesterday. I got a 39.7 one night and I didn’t sleep for some days because I was constantly checking his temperature.

My tips for handling fever:
1. Note the temperature.
2. I bathe/ pour lukewarm water on the child. This reduces the temp better than just using wet cloth.
3. Then give paracetamol/nurofen. I interchanged at interval.
4. Wore the baby loose clothes if necessary to avoid cold. If the baby gets cold, he may start shivering and that will make the body to produce more heat.
5. Offer small portion of food at interval to curb throwing up due to high fever.
6. I give glucose water. The logic is this, the body burns energy as it produces heat and you need to replenish this for strength and the brain needs it too.
7. If your baby is like mine that takes the glucose water sparingly, I mix his food and milk with glucose and give him plain water frequently. I also give lots of fruits, it helps.
8. If you do 3 and 4 and the temperature keep rising upto 37-37.5 for 0 to 3 months, 37.5-38 for 3 to 6months, 39.5 for above 6 months, head to the hospital.

For babies 0 to 2 months and preemies, all high temperature should be resolved in the hospital.
If your child is not eating, lethargic or seems non responsive, head to the hospital.
Mothers should insist that a test be carried out before they start any antibiotics. Nigerians, stop abusing antibiotics.

Have your family doctor or paed’s number. You don’t know when you’ll need it.

Well sometimes, fever is the body's way of getting rid of harmful toxins. Unless you are sure you ain't dealing with professionals in that hospital, I will advice you watch it and make sure it doesnt go higher than 38° or demand for a fever injection or better still seek a 2nd opinion in another hospital

Make sure you give him fluid often for strength.

ok. Thanks dear.

I pray for instant healing on your son, Amen.

Ma This simply means they are not treating him according to his ailment.

To bring down the temperature, I think you need baby ibuprofen.

Sha lemme tell you how I do mine, I go give him fever injection first from the hospital, am scared of high temperature. Then wen e don calm down other necessary treatments follows.

Hopes I helped?
