Illiteracy is higher in the north because they have an alternative literacy. Many of them can read and write in Arabic. And that's a form of literacy.

And mind you, their Arabic literacy has significant impact on the economy of their people. Many of them are contractors to Arab countries such as Sudan, Saudi and Egypt.

Unlike the south here, they are not freaked by English literacy because they've been writing and reading long before the colonial masters came. So nothing big.

And more is that all these so-called secular textbooks are available in Arabic language.
So illiteracy rate is high in the north because of your definition of literacy.

I was once in Imo state. I met an old Igbo Muslim man. He was very passionate about the religion.

I also remember the Eastern boy who accepted Islam in my undergraduate days. He named himself Muhammad and his nickname was Abu Hurayrah. His Islam was beautiful. Very beautiful.

These two people above faced persecution from their families, very serious ones. But they remained steadfast.

I know you might be in need of financial assistance. I advice that you get on touch with a Muslim community near you and talk deeply with the Imam/chairman of the community. I pray for you ease in your affairs. May Allaah assist you.

There are uncountable cases of Christian families starving their wards and househelps because they refused to join them in the church. It's a norm among Christian families. The hatred in their eyes is beyond measure and only Allaah knows what their hearts conceal.
