PoliticsObasa, Ex-deputy Governor, APC Chiefs Meet As Campaigns Heat Up by Newsextra014(op): 10:54am On Feb 05, 2023
As Nigerians gear towards the 2023 elections, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, on Saturday reiterated his resolve to work for the victory of all candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) both at the national and state levels.

Dr. Obasa said this when he received former deputy governor of Lagos and senatorial candidate of the APC in Lagos West, Idiat Oluranti Adebule and her team, who were in Agege as part of campaigns ahead of the election.

According to the Speaker, the goal of current political activities is to make sure that the APC wins at all stages of the election from the presidential to the House of Assembly.

Dr. Obasa expressed confidence that Asiwaju will become the president while further noting his expectation that the party would have the majority at the Senate and the House of Representatives.

"This would make governance at the federal level very easy. Same thing goes for our State," he said.

The Speaker urged members of the party as well as his loyalists to continue to remain dedicated and put their trusts in God to crown their efforts with the needed victories and successes.

He also tasked the members to work in unity, cooperation and with passion as, according to him, victory begins with internal cohesion just as he expressed confidence that the Southwest zone would deliver massively for Tinubu.

"Agege is so committed to the APC. We want good results. We want victories with a landslide. We must show total commitment and dedication and that is when we will get what we want. I commend you all for the support you have given our incoming senator," he told the party loyalists, who thronged his constituency office.

In her remarks, Adebule thanked Agege people for their commitment to the party. She said records have shown great results from the area during elections.

She said she decided to visit Agege to thank the people and further plead for their support.

PoliticsNorthern Body Tackles Atiku Over Comment On Naira Policy, Opposing Sultan by Newsextra014(op): 7:06am On Feb 05, 2023
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) on Saturday came hard on the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, over his comment urging the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) not to grant further extension of its Naira swap policy deadline beyond the 10 days announced by the bank.

The AYCF declared that Atiku was on his own for recently opposing the opinions of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar, and the National Assembly on the policy.

Atiku had reportedly hailed the apex bank for a 10-day extension of the deadline while urging it not to grant any further extension.

In a press statement personally signed and released by Alhaji Yerima Shettima, National President of the AYCF, the organisation which said it was calling Atiku to order, wondered what Atiku hoped to benefit from the difficulties citizens currently experience as a result of the cash swap policy.

The group warned Atiku to stop playing politics with the policy adding that his comment was self-serving.

"Former VP Atiku's call was out of place because it is coming on the heels of growing complaint about the kind of sabotage that is causing untold hardship to Nigerians over this policy.

"Atiku stands alone in his call on the CBN not to review the deadline. He is against prominent Nigerians who made passionate appeal for deadline review, notably the sultan of Sokoto, the Senate and House of Representatives leaders and experts.

"What purpose will the current difficulties people are facing serve Atiku? Why would he rather identify with the need to let the difficulties faced by especially rural folks continue and for how long?" The statement asked.

While noting that the policy was good owing to the fact that as at end of June 2022, available data indicated that N2.72 trillion out of the N3.26 trillion in circulation was outside the vaults of commercial banks, the group said it, however, supports the calls by Nigerians for an extension.

"We are of course aware that the economy has suffered heavy, avoidable bruises.

"The AYCF wishes to state that it will be suicidal for this nation to consider Atiku's advice against a review of the CBN cash swap deadline, because for any policy to succeed, it must have a human face and we believe the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, won't turn against overwhelming public interest, like Atiku has just done.

"The AYCF is therefore warning the ex-VP not to turn this policy into a weapon of political manipulation or political attention-seeking opportunity. He should forget about the continuation of a policy in the midst of loud calls for positive review for the sake of his selfish political and self-serving interests. We will not stop emphasising that Nigeria is never a Banana Republic.

"We advise the ex-VP to concentrate on his presidential campaigns by showcasing what he has done to merit the votes of Nigerians and stop playing politics with our economic policies and associated challenges. We thought the ex-VP would tell Nigerians what he has to offer in fighting inflation and weak national currency," the group added.

BusinessPublic Service Recognition A Morale Booster For Us, FIRS by Newsextra014(op): 4:27pm On Feb 01, 2023
The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Muhammad Nami, has stated that his recognition by the LEADERSHIP Awards as the Newspaper’s Public Service Person of the Year 2022 is a morale booster for the Service to do more.

Mr. Nami stated this while speaking to journalists after receiving the LEADERSHIP Public Service Person of the Year 2022 Award at the 14th Edition of the LEADERSHIP Annual Conference and Awards, held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja yesterday.

“We feel honoured to receive this award, and in fact feel more indebted to Nigerians to do better in the years to come,” he noted.

“We are grateful to the media, and most especially the LEADERSHIP Newspaper for finding us worthy of this honour.

“Permit me to dedicate this Award to the FIRS family, and rename it as ‘the LEADERSHIP Public Institution of the Year Award 2022’—not Muhammad Nami’s. This Award is the result of a collective effort. It is because of team work that we have been able to achieve what we have done at the FIRS.”

The FIRS boss stated that the Award was a recognition for the reforms that the Service had carried out, and their consequent results.

“We have carried out so many reforms that have brought us to this proud moment: we have rebuilt the institutional structure of the Service; we have ensured we carry our taxpayers along; we have created an environment for ease of tax payment; we have deployed big data in our operations; we have taken our stakeholders—including the media, seriously; among many others.

“When we came on board, we met a Service that was collecting tax revenue within the region of 5 trillion for a period of nine years. In 2021 we broke that jinx, and crossed over the 6-trillion Naira mark. We did not rest on our oars, in 2022, by sheer determination and collective effort we raked in N10.1 trillion in tax revenue—the highest sum in our nation’s history.”

Speaking on the prospects for the year 2023, Mr. Muhammad Nami stated that the FIRS would do everything within its means to ensure that government does not lack the needed resources to cater for the needs of the Nigerian people.

“It is not easy to collect taxes. I believe that after the issue of tackling insecurity, the second most difficult task for our government is to collect taxes. But we will continue to appeal to Nigerians to pay their taxes, and help them understand that without taxes, salaries cannot be paid; without taxes, roads cannot be built; without taxes our lives and properties cannot be secured.

“I want to assure Nigerians that we would do everything within our means to ensure that the governments at the three tiers are funded to provide these services and needs to the Nigerian people.

“We have already commenced the journey to do better, well before the new year. We have appointed telecommunication companies and deposit money banks to act as agents of VAT collection for us. They would deduct VAT at source from their Contractors and, or Service providers, and remit same to us.

“Also, we are extending our collaboration further, beyond local local stakeholders and engaging with the international community to ensure that we have seamless flow of information required for tax administration.

“We would also work tirelessly to ensure that we improve our automation so that we are able to serve our taxpayers better than previous years.”

Nairaland GeneralFIRS Makes FAAC Fat by Newsextra014(op): 8:14pm On Jan 30, 2023
By Salisu Na'inna Dambatta

Many Nigerians hold the notion and presume wrongfully that every money invested in various development projects by the three tiers of government came from one loan or the other.

The fact is that most of the money deployed to finance national development in this country was generated internally through the efforts of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The rejuvenated FIRS is now turbocharged in its revenue drive to ensure that the country continues to finance the provision of transportation infrastructure, expansion in power generation, transmission and distribution and giving greater access to tertiary education to develop the necessary skilled manpower to support the economy and enhance our collective wellbeing.

One of the most visible evidence of the effectiveness and historic success in revenue generation by the FIRS is manifested in the fatness of the distributable money that became available to the three tiers of government in the country, especially within the last two years.

For it is on record that under the watch of FIRS Executive Chairman, Mr. Muhammad Nami and his team, the revenue declared at the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting at least thrice hovered around N1 trillion or even surpassed that figure at various months in the year 2022 . It was a feat.

This story regarding that feat from a news outlet is simply nice: "The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) has shared a total sum of N902.053 billion in November 2022 as Federation Account Revenue to the Federal Government, States and Local Government Councils." The sum was a shade to a trillion Naira.

But a nicer story regarding shared money at FAAC in August 2022 runs thus: "The Federation Account Allocation Committee, has shared a total sum of N954.085 billion Federation Account Revenue to the Federal Government, States and Local Government Councils. Details of the revenue put gross statutory revenue at N1. 066 trillion for the month of July 2022." The total was above a trillion Naira.

Yet another trillion Naira revenue shared at FAAC, courtesy of the FIRS, was reported in the media as quoted here: "The Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), at its Meeting shared a total sum of N990.189 billion to the three tiers of government, as Federation Allocation for the month of December 2022."

Read the clincher in the N990.189 billion distributed story: "the Gross Statutory Revenue of N1,136.183 billion was received for the month of November 2022." Again it was above a trillion Naira within 30 days.

Commentators on national issues, especially those focusing on the provision of essential facilities that improve the wellbeing of Nigerians had repeatedly insisted that there is a strong linkage between those facilities and the trillions of Naira raked in by the FIRS.

The direct role of the FIRS in enabling the three tiers of government to have the requisite financial muscles to fund national development has placed the institution in the heart of national development.

The ability of the FIRS to generate revenue above its target in the era of Muhammad Nami became boldly obvious when the Service collected N6.405 trillion in 2021, which was over a hundred percent of its collection target for the year.

It was the first time that the agency crossed the Six-trillion Naira mark. It was achieved in the face of an economic downturn caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest “FIRS 2022 Performance Update” report released by the Service indicates that the previous record of just over N6 trillion was dwarfed by the N10.1 trillion revenue it garned for Nigeria in the year 2022.

The direct role of the FIRS in enabling the three tiers of government to have the requisite financial muscles to fund national development is best illustrated by the over N10 trillion the revenue generation machine netted in for the federation in 2022.

The revenue Service said the amount was more than 96 per cent of its envisaged collection for the year. It is reportedly the highest tax collected by the FIRS since its establishment in 1947.

The good news from the FIRS, which made it possible for FAAC to have fat distributable amount of money for national development has shown that with a sincerity of purpose in public service as demonstrated by Nami and his team, Nigeria can sustain its trajectory to becoming one of the top 15 best countries on earth within a generation. Money generated by the FIRS will finance the process.

PoliticsFIRS Breaks Its 2021 Record, Collects N10.1 Trillion In 2022 by Newsextra014(op): 8:18pm On Jan 23, 2023
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that it collected over N10 trillion in tax revenue in the year 2022, the highest tax collection ever recorded in its history.

The Service made this known in its “FIRS 2022 Performance Update,” report signed by its Executive Chairman, Mr. Muhammad Nami, and released to the public on Monday, after his briefing with President Muhammadu Buhari.

“The FIRS, in the year 2022 collected a total of N10.1 trillion in both oil (N4.09 trillion) and non-oil (N5.96 trillion) revenues as against a target of N10.44 trillion.

“Companies Income Tax contributed N2.83 trillion; Value Added Tax N2.51 trillion; Electronic Money Transfer Levy N125.67 billion and Earmarked Taxes N353.69 billion.

“Non-oil taxes contributed 59% of the total collection in the year, while oil tax collection stood at 41% of total collection,” the report noted.

It is the first time that the FIRS will cross the 10-trillion Naira mark in tax revenue collection.

The Performance Update Report further clarified that included in the total revenue sum is the sum of N146.27 billion which is the total value of certificates issued by the Service to private investors and NNPC for road infrastructure under the Road Infrastructure Development Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme created by Executive Order No. 007 of 2019.

The report also stated that the N10.1 trillion is exclusive of tax waived on account of various tax incentives granted under the respective laws, which amounted to N1,805,040,163,008.

Providing perspective to this unprecedented tax collection, the FIRS noted in the Performance Update that the Muhammad Nami-led management upon assumption of office came up with a four-point focus, namely: administrative and operational restructuring; making the service customer-focused; creating a data-centric institution; and automation of administrative and operational processes.

It further noted that over the period of 2020 to 2022, the management had introduced reforms bordering around these four-point focus which were producing results.

“The reforms introduced at different times from 2020 are gradually yielding fruits. By the close of 2022, the Service had fully restructured the administration of the Service for maximum efficiency and achieved internal cohesion such that all functional units are working in unison towards the achievement of set goals.

“As a result of conducive environment created for staff, officers of the Service are pulling their weight on the global stage with international recognitions and awards;

“The Service had also automated most of the administrative and operational processes. A major leap was the full deployment of the TaxPro Max for end-to-end administration of taxes in June 2021. The module for the automated TCC went live 1st January 2023 while taxpayers had already downloaded over 1,000 TCCs this year without having to visit FIRS office,” the report read.

It also noted that the Service had operationalised its data mining and analysis system thereby allowing for data-backed taxpayer profiling.

Other reforms the Service introduced in this period focused on the detoxification of the tax environment by ridding it of mutual mistrust, negative tax morale, and tax evasion, through effective taxpayer education, open engagement with stakeholders and improved services.

It noted that it is courtesy these reforms, framed around the four-focus points that the Service was able to achieve this collection.

Mr. Muhammad Nami, Executive Chairman of the FIRS, commenting on the N10.1 trillion record tax collection achieved under his leadership stated that this was made possible through “dogged implementation of strategic reforms over the past two years; a renewed commitment by officers of the Service, accompanied with a boosted morale; as well as the innovative deployment of technology for automation of both tax administration and operational processes.

“This collection was possible through collaboration with our stakeholders, from our colleagues at the Executive branch of government, to the members of the judiciary, to our brothers and sisters at the National Assembly, as well as the tax advisory committee, professional bodies, unions, and most crucially our taxpayers.”

Speaking on the outlook for 2023, Mr. Nami stated that the Service would build on the current reforms, achieve full automation and continue to establish a resilient Service that would continue to provide sustainable tax revenue to fund the government.

“We intend to maintain, and even improve on the momentum in 2023,” he stated.

“We have peaked, but this is not certainly our peak. In fact, my hope is that this would be the least sum the Service would ever collect going forward.

“Our goal is to identify more areas where we can improve on in the delivery and efficiency of our collection; and plug loopholes, while deploying innovative reforms in data and artificial intelligence.

“Ultimately, we believe that the FIRS can shoulder the responsibility of providing revenue needed for the governments across the Federation to cater for the needs of the Nigerian people through taxes.

“This is feasible once we get the much-desired support from the three tiers and arms of government, as well as all stakeholders.”

The FIRS appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for his support, as well as the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed and the Minister of State, Mr. Clem Agba.

“FIRS Management uses this medium to commend all patriotic taxpayers who paid their taxes correctly, stakeholders for their support, and officers of the Service for their dedication to duty.

“The Service equally owes its achievements in 2022 to effective leadership of the Honourable Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning – Mrs Zainab Ahmed, her brother, the Minister of State – Mr Clem Agba, members of the National Assembly and the fatherly support of the President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria – Muhammadu Buhari.”

This is the second consecutive year that the Service will be recording unprecedented tax collection.

PoliticsAPC-PCC Accept members of Atiku Support Organization To Tinubu's Camp by Newsextra014(op): 8:46pm On Jan 19, 2023
Sequel to Asiwaju's unique style of governance, especially in the area of grooming young and intellectual minds and preparing them for leadership, the Presidential Campaign Council PCC of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC has welcomed members of Atiku Support Organization who has abandoned the former vice president and decided to pitch tent with the APC Presidential candidate.

Fidelis Onakoma, the publicity secretary of Atiku Support Organization, Anambra state chapter spoke on behalf of all members across 30 states today, January 19, 2023 at the APC-PCC head office in Abuja. He attributed their decision to abandon the Atiku campaign because they are not recognised for their hard work and also identified the poor leadership values of Atiku. They however concluded that they believe in the structure of Tinubu and his agenda for Nigerians.

According to his statement, "What we want is to be incorporated into the activities of APC in our various states and at the national level. Atiku Support Organization is the leading support organization of PDP campaign council. It’s the only support group that Atiku himself created and he made his son to be chairman.
For that reason, we've all decided to leave for the Tinubu Support Organisation under the Youth wing. I assure you that we joined the APC in good faith,"
he averred.

Welcoming the new members, secretary of the presidential campaign council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of 2023, Hon. James Abiodun Faleke described the defection as a step in the right direction, saying the APC and Asiwaju has contributed a lot in the development of Nigeria.

Faleke thanked the front runners of the group. He appreciated their struggle and asured them of a fair treatment before and after Asiwaju emerges.

He said, "On behalf of our principals, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima, the APC-PCC welcomes you all.

"Your grievances are well noted and it's not late to realize that you were in the wrong place. But because Asiwaju is a party for all, it is important that you all have on record Asiwaju's performance when it comes to reward. The basic issues here is lack of reward from where you are coming from. One of the major thing Tinubu is known for apart from developmental structure is his reward system".

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced that taxpayers can now get their Tax Clearance Certificate in a single click via its flagship Taxpro Max solution.

The TaxPro Max, a tax administration solution introduced by the apex tax authority in June 2021 is a one-stop-shop for taxpayer registration, tax returns filing, tax payment, tax clearance certificate requesting, among other functionalities.

The Service made this announcement on Tuesday via its social media pages on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram where it stated that the generation of Tax Clearance Certificates, which used to be issued within a period of two weeks would now be available on a single click by the taxpayer.

This innovation is coming on the heels of wide-scale technological reforms that the Service has embarked on in its bid to achieve hundred percent automation of its tax administration functions.

Commenting on this development, the Executive Chairman of the FIRS, Mr. Muhammad Nami explained that this functionality was in line with the objectives of the Service to make the lives of taxpayers easier and ensure the ease of doing business in the country.

“One of our objectives as a Service is to build a Customer-Centric institution,” he stated.

Politics2023: Tinubu Already Projected To Win, Say Sanwo-olu, Obasa by Newsextra014(op): 8:27am On Dec 22, 2022
- Sanwo-Olu commends Obasa for his leadership

- Obasa says Tinubu behind success of Lagos

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly have expressed optimism that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will win the 2023 presidential election.

This was as Sanwo-Olu, thanked the Speaker for his effective leadership of the legislative arm of government noting that the successes recorded by the current administration in the State is because of the constant backing of the House.

The duo spoke at the 20th anniversary of the Annual Thanksgiving and End of the Year Party of the Assembly on Wednesday.

They both noted how Tinubu laid the foundation for the successes recorded by modern-day Lagos State while declaring that Nigeria needs the presidential candidate in 2023.

According to them, Lagos enjoys a steady progress because the government, right from Tinubu's era, never discriminated in appointment of the right people into positions whether in terms of religion or ethnicity.

"The relationship between the executive and the House is a definition of the unique purpose of separation of power. What we are seeing in Lagos today is the result of the rancour-free, close relationship that exists between us and the House," Sanwo-Olu added.

In his remarks, Dr. Obasa said there are positive projections in favour of Tinubu already.

"Today, we talk greatly of our dear Lagos and how it has evolved since 1999. We today celebrate the successes achieved by the State.

"But we have Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who sacrificed and created the direction for development and progress, started the foundation and began the structure upon which successive administrations have built.

"That same Asiwaju is ready to lead Nigeria away from our usual challenges. Nigerians know that we sincerely need him. That is why I am happy that recent surveys and analysis point to his victory at the polls, the most recent being the SBM’s projection showing that Tinubu would win more of the States of the federation. We must double our efforts to see him win," Obasa urged.

"The Speaker, who prayed for a better 2023 for all the guests and their families, noted: "In every sense, the year 2022 has been a unique year with its attendant challenges. But the good book, the Holy Bible, admonishes us to faint not but be fervent in the spirit and that if we fail not, then surely, we will be counted among the victorious.

"As the new year approaches, may your life be filled with lots of celebrations as well as happiness."

In his sermon, Pastor Bolaji Idowu who is Lead Pastor at Harvesters International Christian Centre, Lagos, urged the guests to always understand and thank God for His mercies upon them as thanksgiving is the best way to appreciate God.

Earlier welcoming the guests, Patron of this year's celebration, Hon. Temitope Adewale, said the thanksgiving service is an opportunity to thank God for His uncommon favour upon the House in 2022.

Nairaland GeneralNo Crisis On Oloja Of Lagos Stool- Kosoko Family Declares by Newsextra014(op): 9:53pm On Dec 16, 2022
-1983 Registered Declaration still subsisting, intact.

The king Kosoko royal family/ Oloja of Lagos chieftaincy family has declared that there is no crisis within the family and that the ascension to stool of Oloja of Lagos is a settled matter.

Kosoko family also stated that the 1983 Registered Declaration guiding the selection of occupant of the Oloja stool is still subsisting and intact.

These were contained in separate statements signed by Alhaja (Chief) Mutiat Ashabi Abimbola Alli - Balogun, Head of the Kosoko Royal family and Prince Sikiru Kosoko, the General Secretary on Friday.

They debunked insinuations contained in an online report that the Lagos State Government is making moves at resolving the crisis surrounding the Oloja of Lagos stool, a first class chieftaincy title in the class of Akarigbere chiefs of Lagos.

The General Secretary of the family, Sikiru Kosoko, who denounced the report, which was based on a purported statement online, declared that only the Olori Ebi, Alhaja Mutiat Ashabi Ali-Balogun or her assigned members of the family has the right to issue statements or engage in official correspondence on behalf of the family.

According to the statement, the purported statement and reports are filled with falsehood and misinformation, adding that contrary to the misinformation in the report, the family, through the Olori Ebi of the entire family and those of the various branches, an Omo Oye, (Oloja of Lagos elect), has been chosen and ratified in the person of Prince Abiola Olojo Kosoko”.

“The attention of the king Kosoko Royal Family of Lagos/ Oloja of Lagos Chieftaincy Family has been drawn to a publication purportedly coming from the family which is not true.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the king Kosoko Royal Family/ Oloja of Lagos chieftaincy family has a strict line of official communication, which is through the Olori Ebi of the family, Alhaja Mutiat Ashabi Ali-Balogun or her assigned member of the family.

“It is also important to note that the Kosoko Royal Family already has an Omo Oye {Oloja of Lagos elect} in the person of Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko, whose selection has been ratified by the Olori Ebi of the family and the kingmakers from all other ruling houses in accordance with the 1983 Oloja of Lagos Chieftaincy Declaration”, the family said.

The family scribe further added that the Oloja of Lagos Chieftaincy Declaration of 1983 upon which Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko was selected and ratified, is the authentic law guiding the Oloja of Lagos stool, as it is at the moment the only recognized law.

According to the family, the year 2000 Government View, an offshoot of a tribunal headed by retired Justice Akin Holloway, is merely an observation and still ‘in view’, which is yet to be promulgated into law, thus, without any effect or force of law. The guiding principles still remained in the existing 1983 Declaration”.

“Contrary to the reports making the round, we declare that the 1983 Declaration remains sacrosanct as the year 2000 Government View referred to in the report is a mere view and not law”, the statement said.

“It is also important to note that the cases at the High Court and Court of Appeal referred to in the highly misinforming report were not our cases but issues of the chieftaincy family merely mentioned.

“We are by this statement, informing the general public that there is no crisis in the Kosoko Royal Family of Lagos regarding the filling of the vacant Oloja of Ereko stool as all that is necessary have been done to fill the stool and that those agitating against the choice of the family are mere trouble makers bent of dragging the good and eminent name of the family in the mud.”

Also denouncing a press statement allegedly in circulation calling for the ratification of the Registered Declaration of the family, the Kosoko Royal Family said:

“This is also to call the attention of the authorities and the general public to a letter circulating in the name of the Kosoko Royal Family/Oloja of Lagos Chieftaincy Family calling for ratification of the valid registered declaration, a move contrary to the position of the general family and without the consent of the head of the family.

“The judgment of the High and Appeal Courts being referred to in the said press releases does not in any simple language be mentioned or talk about the registered declaration of 1983.

“The judgement of the Appeal Court directed the litigant to go back to the High Court by setting aside the High Court judgment against the litigant.

“The judges in their judgment did not at any point make mention of the declaration because that was not the substance taken to the High Court and as such the Appeal Court cannot give what you did not seek for.

“It is also on record that there is only one registered declaration regulating the process of ascending the stool of the Oloja of Lagos and there are no court cases of any sort against it till date”, the family stated.

While stating that the litigant voluntarily withdrew from the matter, Kosoko family also affirmed that the entire family unanimously approved Alhaja (Chief) Mutiat Ashabi Abimbola Alli-Balogun as the head ( Olori Ebi ) of the family.

The family also added that based on the 1983 Declaration, the family also conducted the selection of the new Oloja of Lagos and concluded it with Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko as the Oloja – elect.

“The litigant in October 2014 on his own made an official statement not to continue the legal process in the court of law and the report of inquiry”, the family said in the statement.

“The family has an approved and unanimously accepted Alhaja (Chief) Mutiat Ashabi Abimbola Alli-Balogun as the head ( Olori Ebi ) of the family who is saddled with the responsibility to manage the affairs of the family until there is an Oloja of Lagos in place.

“The issue of the Omo oye (Oloja of Lagos Elect) has since been concluded by the king makers, who had rectified the Omo oye presented by the next ruling house (Akinsanya Olojo) as expressed in the only registered declaration dated 1983 in person of Prince Abiola Olojo-Kosoko from the Akinsanya Olojo Ruling House being declared as the Omo Oye Elect for the stool of the Oloja of Lagos.

"The Olori Ebi, Alhaja Alli-Balogun and the General Secretary of the King Kosoko Royal Family/Oloja of Lagos chieftaincy family, is using this medium to inform the general public and the Lagos State Government of the illegality being put together by some unknown persons to create unrest within the King Kosoko Royal/the Oloja of Lagos Chieftaincy Family and to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere presently enjoyed within the Ereko, Idumota and Balogun area of Lagos Island", Kosoko family warned.

AgricultureExperts Seek Right Policies, Research To Boost Organic Agriculture Farming by Newsextra014(op): 8:58pm On Dec 09, 2022
Experts in organic agriculture have emphasised the importance of the right policies and research on proper organic agriculture farming to improve nutrition and boost economic earnings.

They made the call in Ibadan at the first African Organic Research Conference (AFROREC), organised by Network of Organic Agriculture Researchers in Africa (NOARA), held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.

The theme of the conference is 'Unfavorable Climate and Food
Systems in Africa: Organic and Agroecology Solutions'.

In his Keynote address, Prof. Raymond Auerbach, an Organic researcher from South Africa traced the history of ecological organic agriculture on the continent and the developments emanating from its acceptance.

He said research findings in five African countries highlight wrong agricultural policies by the African departments of agriculture and the effects on food security, nutrition and farmers as well as the populace.

Auerbach stressed the importance of the conference considering the myriad of challenges facing agriculture in developing countries, especially climate change.

According to him, political strategies and goals should be employed to support and promote organic agriculture.

"Because of Climate Change, people are realising that we need agriculture that is efficient.

"We need agriculture which produces health and is not bad for the environment," Auerbach said.

"Also, we are responsible for harmonising the different agriculture and natural resources policies in West Africa so that the region can achieve food self-sufficiency within the shortest possible time."

According to him, the policy emphasises the need to promote organic agriculture, not just conventional agriculture, to promote health and environmental conditions.

Dr Olugbenga AdeOluwa, the Continental Coordinator of NOARA in his overview said the conference is a contribution of NOARA to the decision of the African Heads of State and Governments on organic
farming [EX.CL/Dec.621 (XVII)] as well as the demand by
stakeholders of the organic and agroecological sectors of
Africa, for research interventions to improve their operations.

"Despite the efforts of many stakeholders of organic agriculture and agroecology in Africa, there is still a gap of appropriate research interventions to strengthen efforts of these organizations in Africa.

"Thus, this 1st AFROREC conference is providing a platform for multi-stakeholders of organic and agroecological research in Africa
to showcase their research results/innovations as solutions to stakeholders’ challenges".

Adeoluwa added that some of the objectives of the conference were to showcase the potentials of organic agriculture and agroecology research in transforming national and regional economies, ecologies and livelihoods through income growth, climate change adaptation, food sovereignty and trade.

He said there is a need to share knowledge, information, experiences and skills among all stakeholders of organic and agroecology sectors in Africa.

"There is also a need to present scientific evidence on the capability of organic agriculture/agroecology
in contributing to healthy living and transformation of national and continental economy, enhancement of systems resilience and mitigation of climate change, among others.

"It is equally necessary to showcase organic produce and products to stimulate national, regional and international trade; linking producers to markets.

"And as well showcase and publicize benefits of organic agriculture and agroecology for consideration of policy makers, organic stakeholders and the general public", he said.

Ernest Aubee, Chairman Regional Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA), who was honoured with the award of the 2022 Champion of Organic and Agroecology Agriculture in West Africa appealed to both physical and online participants to contribute their knowledge and expertise to the conference for the growth of Organic Agriculture in the continent.

He commended NOARA for the conference adding that organic agriculture research is an important driver of food and nutrition security on the African continent.

"Organic Research will contribute immensely to food and nutrition security, improve economic livelihoods and poverty alleviation".

He called on the private sector to join in the drive for organic agriculture development.

Aubee also called for greater collaboration among researchers, extension workers, policy makers, farmers and consumers, if African countries are to benefit from new organic technologies.

"We must incorporate indigenous organic knowledge and practices in the design of relevant technologies for the continent.

HealthClean Up Nigeria Worries About Environmental Challenges, Urges Stakeholders To P by Newsextra014(op): 10:27pm On Dec 02, 2022
By Ebuka Obidinma

Clean-Up Nigeria (CUP), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has expressed worries about the environmental situation and called on government and relevant stakeholders to provide preventive measures to tackle it.

The National Coordinator of the organisation, Mr Prince Owoh Jr, made the call at a public presentation of the NGO's 5th State of the Nigeria Environment 2022 Report (STONER) in Abuja.

Owoh said CUP was concerned about the state of the environment, adding that collaboration of the government and other relevant stakeholders would tackle the situation.

He commiserated with the families of hundreds of people who lost their lives and millions of internally displaced persons following the worst flood disaster in the country in recent times.

"We are not unmindful of the synergy of non-governmental organisations like CUN, both within and outside the country, that help the sufferings of IDPs.

"We are also calling on our government and corporate bodies to continue to render more assistance.

"Tthe deaths and displaced persons could have been averted if access to rescue and relief materials reached them on time."

Owoh, while presenting the 5th edition of STONER, announced that Akwa Ibom State emerged the cleanest State in Nigeria, for the year 2022, with a cumulative score of 62 per cent.

"Ebonyi took 2nd with 45 per cent while Bauchi emerged 3rd position with 44 per cent."

He said Abuja, the nation's capital city, emerged the cleanest city in Nigeria for 2022 with 79 per cent followed by Uyo with 63 per cent.

"We, again, congratulate Akwa Ibom people and the government for emerging as the cleanest State for the year 2022 in Nigeria, with a cumulative score of 62 per cent.

"The 2nd and 3rd States, Ebonyi and Bauchi, we congratulate you.

"Also we congratulate Abuja capital city for emerging the cleanest city in Nigeria for the year 2022, closely followed by Uyo.

"While appreciating the winning States, the other States and town/cities need to seriously step up their performances and improve their living environment.

"We call on all stakeholders to engage peer review mechanisms by making out time to visit both the winning States and cities and the backward States and cities.

"Also, to gain more insights into what the top States are doing in order to improve their performance ratings."

Owoh advised Nigerians to embrace strong personal hygiene and good sanitation habits and to dispose of their
waste appropriately.

"We are encouraged by government at all levels and the populace in the sense that after the initial forth cleanliness index ratings studies we carried out in 2018, 2019 and 2020 there has been encouraging improvement.

"The improvement in hygiene and sanitation practice across the States is by 2 per cent in 2022; however, it could be better."

He said the essence of the report was to bring sanitation and waste management to the front burner of both the government and the populace and, in the process, increase awareness.

He said that the effort would also encourage alternative actions on personal hygiene and sanitation to ensure a cleaner, healthier and safer Nigeria for all.

According to him, the performance indicators from the studies show that, in 2022, over 176.3 million Nigerians live in unclean environments compared to 172 million in 2021.

"This development is not only alarming but urging the government to key into the global best practices of waste modernisation with related benefits."

Owoh thanked the International Council for Local
Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Canada; Germany; SUEZ Foundation, France and Clean-Up the world, Australia, among others whose financial and technical support enabled the study .

BusinessN500bn Devt Fund: Senate Threatens To Arrests Godwin Emefiele, BOI MD, Other Age by Newsextra014(op): 9:32pm On Nov 30, 2022
The Senate began a probe into the alleged uneven disbursement of loans to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the six geo-political regions by the Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN) to the tune of half a trillion naira.

The federal lawmakers yesterday threatened to issue a warrant of arrests on the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele and heads of affected financial institutions for failing to honour its invitation.

The Probe Committee chaired by Senator Sani Musa, from Niger East has also vowed to arrest the Managing Director of the Bank of Industry, Olukayode Pitan, the Managing Director of Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL), Aliyu Abdulhamid and the Director General of Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Olawale Fasanya if they fail to appear before the Committee.

The Committee’s threat became imperative when the five agencies were conspicuously absent at the investigative hearing yesterday on the alleged uneven disbursement of the N500 billion development fund.

Not happy with their absence, the Chairman of the Committee who noted that out of the eight relevant government agencies needed for the investigation, five were invited to appear before the committee at the Wednesday session, said, “Out of these five, only two came while the remaining three which are the CBN, BOI and NIRSAL, were conspicuously absent without any letter from them explaining why.

“Assignment before this committee is a very important one, requiring cooperation and compliance from all those linked to issues at hand.

“MD of DBN and his counterpart from the Bank of Agriculture are here for required clarifications and explanations, making it mandatory for the CBN Governor, MD of BOI and DG of NISRAL to appear unfailingly in subsequent sessions or risk being coerced through the issuance of a warrant of arrest.”

According to him, Ministers of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, Trade and Investment, Niyi Adebayo and Humanitarian Affairs, Sadiya Umar Farouq, will appear before the committee on Thursday this week for required submissions on roles played in the alleged uneven disbursement of funds.

In his presentation before the committee, the Managing Director of DBN, Tony Okpanachi who denied deliberate lopsidedness in the disbursement of the fund, said that laid down criteria set by the CBN were used for fund disbursement, adding, “Our lending has criteria and they are the same with those set by the Central Bank of Nigeria.”

Okpanachi who explained that for a business to qualify for the DBN loan, it must have less than 250 employees and must not have done a turnover of more than N1.1 billion, said, “We do a risk assessment of the participating financial institutions (PFIs) before they begin to lend to businesses. We don’t want to give out money and the money fritters away. So we track the end users of the loans yearly.”

According to him, the location of the registered MSMEs in Nigeria also explained the reason for the loan’s disbursement, adding that out of the registered MSMEs across Nigeria, Lagos alone has 25%, South-West 23%, South-South 18%, South-East 10%, North-Central 10%, North-West 9%, FCT 4% and North-East 2%.

The DBN boss who the committee that DBN has asked participating financial institutions to build the capacity of small-scale businesses, and train them on how to structure their businesses for them to be able to access the loans, said, “For DBN, it’s a continuous process to get more businesses on board.”
