The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has banned the state security network agency known as Amotekun Corps from participating in the governorship election in Ondo State.


The Independent National Electoral Commission fixed Saturday, November 16 for the off-cycle governorship election with a total of 17 political parties participating in the exercise.

In a statement on Sunday, Mr Egbetokun said the security of elections in the country was the sole responsibility of the police in partnership with other federal security sister agencies.

In the statement signed by the Force spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IG warned against political interference and violence in the upcoming election.

He said, “Furthermore, the IGP reaffirmed the established guidelines governing election security management in Nigeria, stressing that no quasi-security organisation, including state-backed groups like Vigilante Corps or Amotekun, will be permitted to participate in the election process. The security of this election is a responsibility entrusted solely to the Nigeria Police Force and other federal security agencies, along with the broader membership of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security.’’

Mr Egbetokun also cautioned political thugs and any individuals or groups who may contemplate acts of violence or disruption before, during, or after the election.

He explained that anyone caught would face the full force of the law, adding that the message was clear as those who attempted to jeopardise the peace and security of the state would not go unpunished.

The police chief also reiterated that comprehensive plans had been set in motion to guarantee a smooth election, including the strategic deployment of adequate personnel, resources, and state-of-the-art equipment.

He explained that security agencies would be deployed to ensure adequate security and orderly election process across the 18 Local Government Areas, 203 wards, and 3,933 polling units in the state.

According to Mr Egbetokun, officers from various specialized units, including the Special Intervention Squad, Police Mobile Force, Counter-Terrorism Unit and Special Protection Unit will participate in the poll.

He added that officers would also be deployed from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit, K-9 Unit, Federal Investigation and Intelligence Response Team, and the Federal Intelligence and Security Task Force working with other security agencies.

President Bola Tinubu has appealed to graduates of Nigerian universities to exercise patriotism and avoid the temptation of seeking greener pastures outside the country.

According to him, Nigeria can make its pastures equally as green or even greener.

Mr Tinubu, represented by the vice chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Owunari Georgewill, charged the graduates to be agents of change by utilising their knowledge and tools to solve societal issues.

“As you go into the world, I urge you to be agents of change, using your knowledge and tools to uplift our society and contribute to the growth and development of Nigeria and the world at large.

“I appeal to your sense of patriotism, imploring you to avoid the temptation of hurrying to look for greener pastures outside.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned opposition parties in Nigeria against celebrating the recent defeat of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election, expressing confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure a decisive victory again in 2027.

On Wednesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump was declared the winner in a dramatic comeback that saw him defeat Harris, making him the 47th president and the oldest person to assume the role.

Reacting to the development, Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifo, described the U.S. election, which garnered global attention, as a robust display of democracy.

FG, States Debts Increase To N134tn As Naira Devastated

Nigeria’s total public debt stock surged by N12.6tn in three months to N134.3tn ($91.3bn) by the end of the second quarter of 2024, The PUNCH reports.

This is a 10.35 per cent increase from the N121.7tn ($91.5bn) recorded in the first quarter of this year.

The rise has been attributed primarily to the devaluation of the naira, according to an official document seen by The PUNCH, which was presented at a session on the sidelines of the World Bank/IMF annual meetings in Washington DC as Nigeria hosted foreign investors.

The document stated, “In Q2 2024, the debt stock grew in naira terms to N134.3tn ($91.3bn) from N121.7tn ($91.5bn) in Q1 2024, driven mainly by exchange rate devaluation. The dollar amount of debt was roughly the same.”

Although it looked like Nigeria’s debt is reducing in dollar terms, The PUNCH observed that there was an increase of N5.55tn or 8.45 per cent in domestic debt, from N65.65tn in Q1 2024 to N71.2tn by Q2 2024.

Also, there was an increase of $780m in external debt from $42.12 bn in the first quarter of this year to $42.9bn by June 2024.

The document seen by The PUNCH showed that domestic debt continued to dominate Nigeria’s public debt portfolio in Q2 2024, accounting for 53 per cent of the total debt stock at N71.2tn ($48.4bn).

External debt made up 47 per cent, amounting to N63.1tn ($42.9bn).

The document also showed that Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio has exceeded 50 per cent.

It also showed that FGN Bonds represented 78 per cent of the domestic debt, affirming the government’s reliance on local bond markets for financing.

Other domestic instruments include Nigerian Treasury Bills, Savings Bonds, Sukuk, Promissory Notes, and Green Bonds, indicating a diverse borrowing strategy.

On the external front, multilateral loans accounted for 50.4 per cent of the total external debt, reflecting Nigeria’s preference for financing from international bodies such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank.

Bilateral loans made up 13.7 per cent, while commercial loans represented 35.9 per cent of external debt.

Speaking earlier during the meeting with investors on Wednesday, Wale Edun, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, announced that the country’s $500m domestic bond was oversubscribed, raising over $900m from investors.

This achievement comes despite prior advice from the International Monetary Fund against issuing the bond.

The Federal Government launched the dollar-denominated domestic bond on August 15, with subscriptions opening on August 20 at $1,000 per unit.

He said, “The IMF said to us that we shouldn’t do domestic issues of dollar bonds. We did it and we were 100 per cent oversubscribed, but we still value their viewpoint and took it into account.”

Edun acknowledged the important role played by the IMF in providing concessional loans, funding, and technical support to countries, noting that these institutions help shape domestic policies and strengthen economic

A student of the university, who asked not to be named, said at least nine people were killed in the attack.

Lawmaker Ordered CBN To Withdraw Old Naira Note, Increase Issuance Of New Ones


The House of Representatives has urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to increase the supply of newly minted N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, while also initiating a phased removal of the old currency from circulation.

The House has also requested that the Central Bank of Nigeria instruct commercial banks to distribute a greater number of new notes to their customers while gradually withdrawing the old notes from circulation.

In response to a motion of urgent national significance put forth by Adam Victor Ogene (LP, Anambra), the House has resolved that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) must initiate awareness campaigns to inform and prepare citizens for the upcoming deadline of December 31, 2024.

The lawmaker said: “Going by the Supreme Court’s subsequent ruling and order, the N200, N500 and N1,000 notes shall cease to be legal tender, medium of exchange for goods and services in Nigeria, and shall also cease to be in circulation as from January 1, 2025.”

Canadian Woman Sentenced To 11 Years In Prison For Smuggling Illegal Drugs Into Nigeria

A 41-year-old Canadian woman, Adrienne Munju, has been found guilty and sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for bringing 74 parcels of Canadian Loud, a potent type of synthetic cannabis, weighing 35.20 kilograms, into Nigeria.

She was apprehended by the NDLEA at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday, October 3, 2024, during the inspection of incoming passengers in the airport’s Arrival Hall.
