FG Did Not Tell Us They Can't Meet Our Financial Demands '– Prof. Emmanuel

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said that government has not at any point in time informed the union that they do not have the financial capacity to meet the union’s demand.

ASUU’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said this in an interview with Punch while reacting to recent comments by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Mr Festus Keyamo; and Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, who claimed that it was unreasonable for the Federal Government to borrow over N1 trillion to meet ASUU’s demands.

ROVINGUPDATES reports that the union has been on strike since February 14, 2022, after submitting its demands, with the strike entering it’s 180th day today, Friday.

Speaking on the union demands, Osodeke said:

“Do you believe the FG has no money? Is Umahi the FG? Has the Minister of Education said so? Has the Minister of Finance said so? If the person directed to resolve a matter has not said so when interlopers are saying things, who will you believe?

“When did Umahi become the spokesperson for the FG? They can borrow money for Trader Moni, they can borrow money to feed schoolchildren in schools, they can borrow to buy vehicles for Niger Republic, but they cannot borrow to fund education.

We are tired too. If they want to close down all the universities formally, they should.”

When asked if ASUU was willing to bend it’s demands so the student would return to school, Osodeke stated that the major issue was the government agreeing to come to the negotiation table.

BREAKING; National Assembly In Abuja On Fire

A store in the House of Representatives section of the National Assembly complex in Abuja on Thursday caught fire leaving documents destroyed.

According to the Punch, passers-by raised an alarm after noticing smoke coming out from the second floor of the New Building, House of Reps Wing of the Complex.

The section which was engulfed by fire includes the wing that houses lawmakers’ offices, committee rooms, banks and other private concerns.

The Director of Information, National Assembly, Rawlings Agada, in a statement on Thursday titled ‘Reported Fire Incident at the House of Representatives New Wing Today, Thursday, 11th August, 2022, in the National Assembly Complex,’ confirmed the incident.

The statement read, “There was a fire incident this evening in one of the janitors located on the 2nd Floor, Room 227 in the New Wing of the House of Representatives, suspected to have resulted from an electrical fault which was noticed by one of the staff (members attached) to the Clerk, House of Representatives, who promptly alerted the Federal Fire Service unit stationed in the National Assembly Complex.”

Firefighters come to rescue

Firefighters from the Federal Fire Service, which has a permanent office on the premises, as well as security operatives rushed to the office and later succeeded in putting out the fire.

Agada, in a statement, noted that the firefighters with the assistance of staff on duty broke into the affected office, putting off the fire.

He added that the Fire Service and the Estate and Works Directorate will restore normalcy to the New Wing housing after due assessment, maintaining investigations will be carried out.

Agada, after commending the prompt response/ actions of the first responders, particularly National Assembly staff (members) and the Fire Service unit in helping to curtain the fire outbreak attached photos of the scene, which showed burnt documents, furniture and other items.

The federal parliament has recorded fire outbreaks of varying degrees in the past.

ONDO STATE: Full List  Of Owo Suspected Church Massacre Discloses 

The identities of five of the attackers of St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State have been revealed.


ROVINGUPDATES earlier reported that the Defence Headquarters had said the Nigerian military arrested the killers of 40 worshippers at the Catholic Church on June 5.

Speaking during a media parley at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja on Tuesday, Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, said some exhibits were recovered from the suspects.

Irabor disclosed that the attackers were arrested by the military in collaboration with Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force.

The Defence Chief stated that the search for more of the terrorists who are on the run is ongoing, adding that the suspects would soon be paraded after investigation is done.

Men of the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, have intercepted two trucks conveying 151 suspected invaders to some states in the Southwest

The corp discovered the suspects while conducting a stop and search operation around Sango, Akure/Ado road in the early hours of Friday, August 5.

The suspects including five women, who were coming from Kastina, Kano and Jigawa states, hid between bags of beans and rice inside the trucks making an inroad into the Southwest.

Confirming the incident, the State Commander of Amotekun, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, said the trucks were intercepted following an intelligence report that terrorists were heading to the Southwest.

Nigerian woman allegedly assaulted by her Italian boss after she demanded her salary

A 25-year-old Nigerian woman, identified as Beauty living in the southern Calabrian city of Catanzaro, Italy has accused her employer of hitting her because she demanded her salary on Tuesday, August 2.

Beauty who works at a beach club and restaurant in Soverato near Catanzaro, reported the assault at a police station in Soverato and backed her report with the video of the alleged aggression she filmed and tendered to the police.
According to InfoMigrants, Beauty was accompanied by her lawyer, Filomena Pedullà, to report the case at the police station. The alleged aggressor has been identified in the Italian press, as the owner of a beach club and restaurant. He is reportedly the son of a retired Carabinieri police officer and does not have a police record.

It was, however, discussed that Carabinieri police are investigating the potential charges of personal injuries, theft and threats after Beauty’s reported aggression, according to Pedullà.

Pedullà said investigators are looking into payment slips.

“Investigators are examining data regarding the contract and the verbal agreement between the two sides. The young woman received a bank transfer of €200 although an agreement had been reached for the payment of €600 euros” Pedullà said

Alleged Yahoo boy kills Girlfriend and buries Her in His Room in Bayelsa.

A suspected yahoo boy has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend and burying her corpse in his room at Okaka area of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

The body of the young woman, identified simply as Kate, was found buried in his room in the early hours of Friday, July 29, and stirred an uproar in the community.

It was gathered that Kate went missing few days ago and her boyfriend, who was identified as Joseph, denied knowing her whereabouts.

This morning, the family of the deceased stormed his house to confront him and demanded that he brought her out either dead or alive.

After much pressure, Joseph confessed to killing her and revealed that he buried her corpse in a shallow grave dug in her bedroom. Following which her body was exhumed.

According to reports, the suspect was beaten by angry youths in the community and later handed over to the police.

An associate of a popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, Mallam Tukur Mamu has highlighted the reasons why he withdrew from negotiation with terrorists that attacked the Abuja-Kaduna bound train in March 2022.

Speaking during an interview with Arise TV on Thursday, Mamu, who has been playing the role of a mediator between the government, the terrorists, and their victims, said that he will no longer participate in dialogue with terrorists as his life is in danger.

He stated that he has received threats over his participation in securing the release of the victims amid difficult situations.

Mamu said he can no longer be involved in the negotiation as he was not receiving the full support of the government, a development he described as dangerous.

Mamu also stressed that no ransom was paid for the freedom of the hostages so far but negotiations and dialogue were instrumental, adding that the government cannot fold its arms while the victims languish in captivity.

He said: “We achieved that through dialogue, thorough negotiation, and the spirit of giving and take. No matter what you do, just imagine this is my son or this is my mother or this is my brother spending all this period in captivity.

“I’m under serious pressure from some of them. They think the little we are doing is a show of the incapacity of the military, which is not so. We are not criticizing the military. We are not criticizing the federal government. We are only advising them this is the right step to take especially in this very critical and unpredictable situation.

“I have announced my withdrawal from engaging with these people because I have my reasons. First when you are doing something as an army of one, even if you will succeed, the success will be very little.

And in the situation where there is virtually no support from the government and no form of appreciation from the government.

And in a situation whereby you are even being threatened in one way or the other, I think the best way in the corrupt system we have (is to withdraw).”

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC, and opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, are scared of their impending loss in the upcoming 2023 elections.
The Jigawa State NNPP gubernatorial candidate, Malam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim stated this during an interview with BBC Hausa service.

The politician insited that he was certain the masses would not repeat the mistakes of voting APC or PDP considering that they have failed the country for the past 22 years.
