Suspect Killed, Police Officer Injured in Clash with Hoodlums in Gombe

A suspected hoodlum was killed and a police officer seriously injured following a violent confrontation between security personnel and a gang of armed youths in the Kumbiya-Kumbiya Quarters of Gombe Local Government Area on Wednesday, April 17.

The clash reportedly occurred at around 10:10 p.m., when an anti-violence patrol team led by Inspector Isah Buba encountered a group of hoodlums at a known black spot.

According to police sources, the group, armed with cutlasses and other dangerous weapons, launched an unprovoked attack on the patrol officers. Special Constable Ahmed Muhammad, 28, was severely injured and rendered unconscious during the assault, initially presumed dead.

As the assailants began to overwhelm the patrol team, Corporal Aliyu Nura opened fire in self-defense, striking Umar Musa, 25, who was later confirmed dead at the Federal Teaching Hospital (FTH) Gombe. His remains have been deposited at the hospital’s morgue.

Constable Muhammad was rushed to Zainab Bulkachuwa Hospital where he is currently receiving treatment for internal injuries. Medical personnel say he is responding to care.

JUST-IN: Suspected Food Poisoning Kills Two in Imo During Film Shoot

Two individuals have died and two others are receiving treatment following a suspected case of food poisoning during a film production in Works Layout, near Nwaosu Street in Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, April 18, around 5:00 a.m., during a movie shoot involving members of the Nigeria Actors Guild. The affected individuals were reportedly served food and drinks during the production.

Shortly after consumption, two members — identified as Monday Israel and Evans Sampson — collapsed and were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri. Medical personnel confirmed both men dead on arrival.

The bodies have since been deposited at the FMC mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while two other crew members affected by the same meal are currently undergoing treatment.

Police Postpone Protest Against Police Abuse Per Repeal Cyber-crime Act

The Nigeria Police Force has postponed a scheduled meeting with social media activist and TikToker @seaking303, originally planned for Monday, April 21, 2025, over his controversial comments regarding Pastor E.A. Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Community Security Ambush Bandits, Neutralize 30, Seize 16 Motorcycles In Zamfara

At least 30 suspected armed bandits loyal to a notorious warlord, Dan Rani, were neutralized on Thursday in a successful ambush by local vigilante operatives, popularly known as Yansakai, near Dansadau town in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara Stat.

According to intelligence sources, the confrontation occurred at about 2:00 p.m., when the armed group was reportedly en route to launch an attack on a nearby village. The vigilante group, acting on credible information, laid a strategic ambush at the outskirts of Dansadau, leading to a fierce gun battle.

The vigilantes, according to Zagazola, were said to have overpowered the assailants, killing over 30 of them on the spot and seizing 16 motorcycles used by the criminal gang.

A boat accident on the Jole River in Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State has claimed six lives, while nine other passengers were rescued alive.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, stated in a post on his X handle that the Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the incident.

According to Makama, the incident occurred on Saturday, April 5, 2025.

The security expert, citing police sources, explained that the boat was conveying 15 people when it capsized midstream.

He disclosed that rescue efforts led to the recovery of nine survivors, while the bodies of six passengers were later pulled from the river.

“The deceased have been identified as Dadi Mallam Dotti (30), Mubarak Abdu (21), Bappa Mallam Dotti (20), Adamu Yayagardi (30), and one Madugu (22), all from Badabdi, Funakaye LGA of Gombe State, of the Terawa ethnic group. The sixth victim was Umar Gambo (34), of Zaura Ward, Damban LGA, Bauchi State, of the Karakare ethnic group.

Shehu Sani, Varsity Don Want Both President, Vice President Immunity Removed Says'Nobody Will Be Above The Law'

The move by the House of Representatives to strip the Vice President, governors, and their deputies of their immunity while sparing the president has stirred debates among stakeholders, who have criticized the logic behind the proposed legislation.

Political scientists, civil rights activists, and politicians have all weighed in on the matter, arguing that since the president and vice president are usually elected on a joint ticket, both should enjoy the same privileges.

Dr. Aminu Hayatu, a senior lecturer in the Department of Political Science at Bayero University, Kano, and Shehu Sani, a human rights activist and former senator from Kaduna, have both expressed concerns about the proposed amendments.

They argue that any proposal to remove immunity must apply to both the president and vice president.

According to them, “What is good for the president is also good for the vice president.” They maintain that any attempt to strip the vice president of immunity, while sparing the president, undermines the joint nature of their election and creates an inconsistency in the law.

The bill, which was passed for second reading in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, seeks to amend Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution to remove immunity from the vice president, governors, and deputy governors. The bill was among 42 others considered and passed during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Earlier, the House had passed 39 constitution amendment bills for second reading.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Solomon Bob (Rivers PDP), aims to curb abuse of office and promote transparency in governance. It seeks to amend Section 308 by limiting immunity to the president, and only when the vice president is acting as president in accordance with Section 145 of the constitution.

Under the proposed amendment, immunity would be removed for those acting in an unofficial capacity or when the conduct is deemed criminal.

Dr. Hayatu criticized the bill for singling out the vice president while sparing the president, asking, “Why are you isolating someone that is also a party to the ticket?”

He emphasized that both positions are elected together and should be treated equally.

“What we need to focus on is whether the executive should maintain that privilege of immunity or not,” he told Daily Trust, adding that the debate should not center on individuals being treated differently.
