Northern community in the South South has called on President Muhamadu Buhari to adequately reward ex-governor Rotimi Amaechi for the role he played in making him President of the country.
Speaking at the end of a meeting of the body in Port Harcourt, Chairman of the northern community in the South south, Alhaji Muhamadu Ali-Kwande lauded former governor Amaechi, describing him as one of the few courageous and transparent Nigerians President Buhari should have around him.

Alhaji Ali-Kwande recalled that Amaechi stood firmly behind Buhari during the presidential race to the point that people from his South South region called him all sort of names.

He stressed that it was now time for President Buhari to genuinely reward a man who gave him all the support even at the risk of his life,

“Amaechi almost lost his life because of his support for Buhari , he stood his ground for Buhari. He said he was supporting an Hausa man because of what past Hausa Presidents have done for the state. He said the former President did not do anything for the state so he will not support him.

Now it is the turn of Buhari to reciprocate. We thank Amaechi. And I believe that Buhari can’t forget Amaechi," he said, adding that some northerners voted for Buhari because of the support they saw Amaechi giving him.

Buhari should take care of Amaechi very well, he stressed.

Obasanjo Speaks With Buhari Over Saraki's Apology

Althought ex-President Obasanjo is not happy with Bukola Saraki for going against his new party the way he did and he made it very clear to him and his entourage, but he has promised to intervene.

Obasanjo scolded Saraki and other Senators who plotted the Senate President coup with him, saying "you children of nowadays, you only run to elders when you have finished making the damage".
To make things easy, Obasanjo spoke with President Buharri before Saraki got to his house.

A presidency source said Buhari is always in contact with Obasanjo, especially to seek for advise..

The source said in one of their recent conversations, Obasanjo informed Buhari that Saraki was leading a small delegation of Senators to his Abeokuta home to beg for his intervention.

“I overheard President Buhari laughing and saying to Obasanjo, 'you have to see them, are they not all your boys'?” the presidency source said.

To this end, Obasanjo has promised to “ensure communication between all parties”.

Buhari Orders Sale of 9 Presidential Aircraft to Cut Cost

As part of the federal government’s cost measures, President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that nine of the VIP transport aircraft under the presidential fleet should be sold off immediately.

Industry sources said the presidential fleet, which are registered as Nigerian Air Force aircraft, is one of the largest in Africa and the third largest in Nigeria after Arik Air and Aero Contractors.

According to an aviation source, who is aware of the directive to sell the aircraft, the presidency has a number of serviceable and unserviceable aircraft that need to be disposed of in order to reduce the amount spent by the federal government for aircraft maintenance annually.

“Nine, which still have market value, are to be sold immediately to reduce maintenance costs.”

According to Thisday, for years, the government has spent over N12 billion annually for the maintenance of the presidential fleet.

Although information on the exact size of the fleet is treated as classified information, the fleet, according to aviation sources, is believed to comprise about 16 aircraft, chief of which is the Boeing 738 BBJ, NAF 001 or Eagle One, used by the president for his travels.

With its luxury configuration comprising a master bedroom, washrooms, showers, a conference and dinning area, and a living area, the plane seats 25 to 50 passengers and would cost at least $100 million to replace today.

Eagle One can spend 12 hours in the air, covering 11,489 kilomtres or 6,200 nautical miles.

In addition to the Boeing 733 reserved for the president, the fleet boasts two Gulfstream 550 jets. The Gulfstream 550 can seat eight to 18 passengers, depending on the configuration, and has a cruiser range of 12,501 kilometres or 6,750 nautical miles. A new luxury Gulfstream 550 would cost an estimated $53.5 million.

According to Wikipedia, other planes in the Nigerian Air Force VIP transport fleet include two Dassault Falcon 7X jets, one Hawker Siddeley 125-800 and one Cessna 550 Citation II.

Information from a Nigerian web portal and Nigerian Air Force sources further revealed that the fleet also boasts two Dassault Falcon 900 jets, a Gulfstream IVSP, a Gulfstream V, a Dornier Do 228, which can carry 19 passengers, one Beechcraft King Air B200, and three AugustaWestland AW139 helicopters.

Sources said each of the two Dassault Falcon 7X jets were purchased for $51.1m in 2010 while the Gulfstream 550 cost $53.3m.

Aviation experts also put the average price of the Falcon 900 at $35m; Gulfstream IVSP at $40m; Gulfstream V at $45m; Cessna Citation at $7m; and the Hawker Siddeley at $15m.

Though all the aircraft are under the presidential fleet, about eight are reserved strictly for the president.

Buhari has taken the right decision to sell off these planes. No more business as usual.

Special Military Unit To Take Over Aso Rock’s Strike Force

Ahead of the relocation of President Muhammadu Buhari to the Presidential Villa, arrangements have been concluded for the Nigerian military to take over the activities of the Strike Force in the villa.

The Strike Force, is a special security outfit saddled with the responsibility of protecting the President and the seat of power, is currently comprising only officials of the Department of State Services.

“DSS officials are the ones that have been serving in the Strike Force. With this development military personnel will take over from them henceforth.

“We are aware that the situation is causing a palpable tension as there is a possibility of a showdown. But we are working hard to ensure that the situation did not degenerate.”

A top Presidency official, who pleaded anonymity, revealed the development to Punch in Abuja.
The source said a Lieutenant who will be leading 21 other military personnel had already been transferred to the Strike Force with an instruction to take over from the DSS officials.

Operatives attached to the Strike Force are always trained abroad on counter-assault and other techniques aimed at making their jobs easier.

Another official, who is aware of the arrangement, also said that machinery had also been put in place to change the new Presidential Villa’s Administrative Officer, who was deployed by the DSS about two weeks ago and replaced with a military officer.

He said all DSS officials currently serving inside the Presidential Villa were not sure of their fate yet.

“The truth is that we are not sure of anything yet. Whichever way, we will only act based on signals from our headquarters whether to leave or remain inside the Villa,” he said.

Politics / There Is A Limit To What I Can Do At 72 - President Buhari by NewsINigeria(m): 1:56pm On Jun 17, 2015

There is a limit to what I can do at 72 - President Buhari

President Buhari says his age will limit his performance as President. He said this while speaking with Nigerians in South Africa on Monday June 15th. He also gave reasons why he joined politics after retiring from the military. What he said below...

"How I wish I became Head of State when I was a governor, just a few years as a young man. Now at 72, there is a limit to what I can do. But what brought me there I think mainly is because I love this country. I was in the war front for 30 months during the civil war. I lost a lot of loyal people to me, I lost relatives. A lot of Nigerians did too. We lost about two million Nigerians just to keep Nigeria one. So, nobody should come now and tell us rubbish. We are going to remain one country.
God has given us another opportunity to reorganise this country. Those who work hard, the society will pay them back. Two fundamental reasons I joined politics, I will tell you. One, when I went back home after being a governor of now six states – Yobe, Borno, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, and Gombe, petroleum minister under former Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo (rtd) for three-and-half years, Head of State and chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF, the most irritating thing was that of all these positions I had held, people didn’t remember any.

They only remember my days at the PTF because I bought bed sheets and put in hospitals and some x-ray machines and some buses for the schools. They remember me more as chairman of the PTF than as former Head of State, governor or minister of petroleum, in spite of the fact that it was during my time that I signed the contract for the Warri and Kaduna refineries, laid more than 3,500km pipes and built more than 20 depots. We got the tankers off the roads; we saved lives; we saved fuel; we saved the road itself. But from 1999 till date, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has messed it up. That is why Nigerians decided to vote me.

The second thing that happened that finally convinced me to join partisan politics was what happened to the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union was an empire in the 20th century that collapsed without a shot being fired. Everybody went home; there was confusion. Now, there are 18 countries out of the old Soviet Union. They were more advanced than the Western countries in science because they wanted to go to space specifically in 1957, and they had more nuclear war heads and delivery system. And they had organised their societies; they had much less crimes as they got jobs for people.

When people had no jobs they got some for them. That was when I decided, and I believe that the best form of governance is multi-party democracy with a big caveat – election must be free and fair. And that was why I was in trouble. I moved from the All Peoples Party, APP, to the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, and eventually, the All Progressives Congress, APC. I contested in 2003, spent 30 months in courts and ended up in the Supreme Court. I contested in 2007, spent about 20 months in courts and ended up in the Supreme Court. I contested in 2011 and spent about eight months in courts – all ending up in the Supreme Court. Why was I doing this? I know the reason; I believed in it! I believe in a system where election is free and fair,”he said.

Politics / Aregbesola Took N480bn Loan, Omisore Claims In Fresh Outburst by NewsINigeria(m): 2:55pm On Jun 16, 2015

Aregbesola Took N480bn Loan, Omisore Claims In Fresh Outburst

A former Deputy Governor of Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, has said the administration of Governor Rauf Aregbesola took a loan of over N480bn from various sources since he assumed office in 2010.

Omisore said this at a press conference in Ile Ife on Monday.

Omisore, who is the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state during the August 9, 2014 governorship election, accused Aregbesola of financial recklessness and lack of proper planning.

According to him, the loan burden and the alleged continuous wasteful spending by the governor are some of the reasons the administration has been unable to pay workers for the past seven months.

He said the governor also wasted the state’s resources on political campaigns during the last governorship poll and the just concluded general election without minding the consequences of his actions.

Omisore said, “The principal debt of Osun State under Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is N480bn. They took N300bn loan, by taking N10bn for each of the 30 local government councils.

“They first raised N60bn bond and later raised another N40bn bond. They borrowed for O’meal project, borrowed for school uniform project and borrowed for airport project.

“They borrowed another N25bn. But the principal debt is N480bn. You will remember that we were saying this before this financial crisis reached this height.
“I raised the alarm then that the way Ogbeni Aregbesola was running the affairs of the state, he would soon run it aground. Now it has happened.”

Omisore said since Aregbesola said it openly on Friday that the situation into which he drove the state was beyond him, he should resign honorably.

While offering suggestions on how the administration could salvage the situation, he advised that the governor should stop his ostentatious life-style and show a sign of remorse.

He said, “The governor should sell the helicopter; the helicopter has two pilots. They spend money on maintenance and so on. He should also stop using chartered aircraft. I am sure this will shock the people to hear that the governor still travels in chartered aircraft despite the financial mess he put the state into.

“He should reduce his security votes, reduce the Government House spending and stop giving Osun money to his Lagos visitors. He should bring back our money. The contracts were inflated, especially the road contract. Gbongan to Akoda, Osogbo to Kwara boundary and the Ring Road were inflated to the tune of N102bn. So, the money to workers is in his pocket. If he can bring just N50bn out from this stolen fund, the workers would smile.”

The former chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation and Finance, said that he had been assisting people the way he could without making a noise out of it. He said if he wanted to play politics with the situation, he would station a trailer load of truck at the PDP secretariat and ask people to come and collect foodstuffs.

But Aregbesola has debunked the allegations of financial recklessness and also said the debt profile of the state is much lower than the figure Omisore gave.

The governor, who responded through his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, in a statement, said Omisore fabricated the N480bn figure to discredit the administration.

He said, “Every knowledgeable person in Osun and beyond has the figures of the Osun borrowings by virtue of the open nature of the Aregbesola’s administration. Osun could not have borrowed in secrecy as the two bonds were in the capital market and the Sukuk Bond was taken in celebrated manners.

“While we took N14.4bn Sukuk bond in two tranches, the state government also approached the capital market for a N30bn loan.

“These are verifiable facts and which are in the public domain. So, what new thing has Mr. Omsiore said other than regurgitating the same old-fashioned, weather-beaten lies that could not help him dislodge Aregbesola in the August 9 governorship election?

“If it is not crime for a state government to source for funds for the development of the state, Omisore needs to tell us why states under the administration of his party, the PDP, are among the debtor states in Nigeria.”

The governor said the state owed its workers just as many other states were affected in Nigeria. He however stated that he was working round the clocks to ensure that the workers were paid.

He added, “For instance, the Gbongan-Akoda Road; Osogbo-Ila-Odo-Kwara-Boundary Road which Omisore has fraudulently put at a cost of N102bn all together, cost a bit higher than N60bn. While the Gbongan-Akoda-Osogbo Road costs N29.2bn; the Osogbo-Ila-Odo-Kwara Boundary is to gulp N17.8bn while the Oba Adesoji Aderemi Second Bye-pass Road will cost N14.5bn.

Politics / National Assembly Members To Get N8.64bn As Wardrobe Allowance Next Week by NewsINigeria(m): 12:57pm On Jun 16, 2015

National Assembly members to get N8.64bn as wardrobe allowance next week

The newly inaugurated members of the National Assembly are to receive N8.64 billion as Wardrobe allowance next week. According to ThisDay, N8.64 billion wardrobe allowance translates to N17.5 million for each of the 360 members of the House of Representatives and N21.5 million for each of the 109 senators. This is asides the other allowances they are entitled to which includes furniture, housing and vehicle.

While the wardrobe allowance will cover the entire four-year tenure that they will be in office, their housing allowances are to be paid on a yearly basis. Based on the approval of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), the housing allowance for political office holders is usually 200 per cent of their annual salaries, the furniture allowance is 300 per cent of annual salaries, while a motor vehicle loan is pegged at 400 per cent of their annual salaries.

Going by this policy, each of the 107 senators besides the Senate President and his deputy, will be paid N4,052,800 as housing allowance. This will be paid to them every year, translating to N433,649,600 as housing allowance to be paid to the Senate annually, while the Senate President and the Deputy Senate President will be provided accommodation by the federal government.

On the other hand, each member of the House of Representatives will be paid N3,970,425 as housing allowance. This implies that the each of the 358 House of representatives members aside the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, will collect a total of N1,421,412,150 as housing allowance.

Like that of the Senate, the speaker and deputy speaker will be given accommodation by the federal government. Following the monetisation of entitlements of public officials undertaken by the Olusegun Obasanjo administration, the lawmakers lost the right to occupy houses built and maintained by the government. Hence, the federal government sold the houses previously occupied by the lawmakers to them.

Since the principal officers of the Sixth National Assembly benefited from the sale of the houses, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is currently building new ones for the four presiding officers of both chambers. On the furniture allowance, each of the senators will be paid N6,079,200 while the furniture for both the Senate president and his deputy will be provided by the government. The total sum to be paid to the 107 senators as furniture allowance will be N650,474,400.

In the House of Representatives, each member will be paid N5,955,637.50 as furniture allowance. This means that the 358 members will collect a total of N2,132,118,225 for furniture.

On the vehicle loan, each of the senators is entitled to N8,105,600, while each House member is entitled to N7,940,850.50, meaning that the 107 senators will collectively take N867,299,200 as vehicle loans while the 358 House members will get N2,842,824,479 for their vehicles.
