Politics / Buhari To Dump Rotimi Amaechi As Choice Of SGF? by NewsINigeria(m): 10:02am On Jun 15, 2015

The signals coming from the Presidency following Bukola Saraki's coup as Senate President is not very good for ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who many had thought would get the SGF for his hard work.

Three APC chiefs and a bureaucrat are in the race for Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

Those being strongly recommended for the SGF position are Amaechi (South-South), Ogbonnaya Onu (South-East), APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun (Edo) and a former occupant of the office, Amb. Babagana Kingibe.

But a new man is coming from North-East to take the SGF because Saraki cheated the North-East.

Although, President Muhammadu Buhari is yet to make up his mind on who gets the job, but from the look of things, Amaechi can't get it again.

According to The Nation, there are three issues Buhari is trying to resolve:
•should the SGF go to the North-East or South-South or South-East?
•should he be a cosmopolitan young element or an experienced bureaucrat?
•how to avoid the “way and manner a former SGF turned the office into an ethnic enclave and destroyed the ethos of the civil service."

The former SGF reportedly politicised appointments, resulting in a situation whereby two people were given letters for an office.

The President is said to be concerned about geopolitical balance in appointments.

The power sharing in the Executive and the Legislature so far has shown that only the South-South is yet to be accommodated.

The breakdown is as follows: President (North-West); Vice-President (South-West); President of the Senate (North-Central); Deputy President of the Senate (South-East); the Speaker of the House of Representatives (North-East); the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (South-West).

But it was gathered that Buhari does not want to subject the appointment of the SGF to Federal Character due to what a source described as “the sensitive nature of the office”.

A highly-placed source in the Presidency said: “The delay in appointing the SGF is borne out of the fact that the President has left it open for the consideration of many eligible Nigerians.

“Apart from playing a crucial role as the engine room of Buhari’s campaign, some forces in the Presidency believe Amaechi combines youthful age advantage and political experience to occupy the office.

“The only fear of Buhari in Amaechi is youthful exuberance, temperament and a down-to-heart attitude which may not be ideal for a technical and diplomatic assignment.

“But pro-Amaechi forces in the presidency pointed to Amaechi’s calmness, composure and the successful coordination of the Presidential Campaign as signs of his readiness for the job.

“They also said having staked his integrity and life on the line for Buhari, only the SGF is befitting for a man like Amaechi, not a mere ministerial job."

Politics / Don't Bribe Anybody To See The President Or Myself - Aisha Buhari Warns Nigerian by NewsINigeria(m): 8:37am On Jun 15, 2015

Don't bribe anybody to see the President or myself - Aisha Buhari warns Nigerians

Speaking at the 'Thank You' dinner she organized to appreciate APC women at the presidential villa on Saturday June 13th, wife of the President, Aisha Buhari warned Nigerians not to fall into the hands of fraudsters who go about asking for money from Nigerians to arrange a meeting between them and the President or his wife.

"I will like to inform you that in the past regime, whether it is true or false, only God knows, some people were going round and parading themselves as PAs. If you wanted to see the First Lady, you will pay $30,000, $50,000 and if you are seeing the President, you will pay all that you have gathered in your lifetime. This will not happen in our regime. Whoever asks you to give a single penny in the name of coming to see the President or his wife is not our staff. It is a lie, don’t be deceived" she said

Mrs Buhari said a lot of things were said against former president Goodluck Jonathan's administration but that it is not like the former president is a bad man, it was the people around him that gave him a bad representation.

"There was nothing that people did not say about the past administration. It is not Jonathan that is not good, but the people around him. So, the people that are going to be around General Buhari have to be very careful because this election ended peacefully. We are praying and hoping that people around him should know that it took him 12 years to get to that position and they must know that they are coming to serve the masses, not General Buhari in person. It is the people that are around him that will determine the political health of our state"she said

Politics / Senate President: Saraki Should Step Down For Plotting A Coup by NewsINigeria(m): 2:29pm On Jun 13, 2015

Senate President: Saraki Should Step Down for Plotting a Coup

As reactions continue to trail the emergence of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC)’s Senator Bukola Saraki as the president of the eigth Nigerian Senate, a group, Grassroots Mobilisers for Buhari has roundly rejected the process which brought about the development, calling it “flawed” and called on the lawmaker to “apologise to Nigerians and step down”.

The group’s director, contact and mobilisation, Hon. Yusuf Musa Ardo, who spoke to LEADERSHIP at her corporate headquarters in Abuja, pointed out that though the group is no stranger to the intrigues within the party, considering that it followed the president on his campaign trail, it took exception to the emergence of Saraki as the Senate President, because it was “a total embarrassment to the APC as a party and a disappointment to all who voted the APC into power in the just concluded 2015 general elections.
“Senator Saraki should apologise to Nigerians and his party and step down with his team. That is the path of honour. If he wants be the Senate President, he must follow the constitutional process.

“We don’t have any grudge against Senator Saraki; he is a leader in the APC and Nigerians have respect for him. Everybody knows that Nigerians rejected PDP through the ballot paper and anyone trying to bring back PDP to power through the back door is an enemy to Nigeria’s electorate especially the APC supporters.
“Saraki’s action can best be termed a ‘political robbery’ geared at satisfying his personal interest which cannot be accepted by all Nigerians, especially those who worked hard to make sure that PDP was voted out in the 2015 elections.
“We hereby call on NGOs, CDOs and all other organisations that worked with us during the electioneering campaign to reject in totality what happened in the national assembly on June 8, 2015, particularly in the red chamber, where the mandate of Nigerians have been taken away and given back to PDP that was rejected by majority of Nigerians during the election,” Ardo rallied.

Politics / Atiku Fighting Tinubu Over Control Of APC by NewsINigeria(m): 2:08pm On Jun 13, 2015

Atiku Fighting Tinubu Over Control of APC

Some politicians often find it hard to give honour to whom it's due. Bola Tinubu is the kingpin of the move to form a formidable opposition to the PDP, he PRACTICALLY made the first move when most of those who are fighting him today as national leader of APC where enjoying themselves.

There are strong indications that two power blocs within the All Progressives Congress are now engaged in a fierce battle for the soul of the party.

The battle between the two power blocs to control the party: one led by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and the other led by Atiku Abubakar, played out during Tuesday’s National Assembly leadership elections.

The ruling party’s preferred candidates in the Senate and the House of Reps were defeated through a high powered politicking which saw a desperate group give PDP the position of deputy Senate President.

PUNCH learnt that both Atiku and Tinubu wanted to have maximum control over the party structure, one so that party decisions could favour him, the other so that party supremacy can be maintained.

It was learnt that the two blocs wanted their candidates to emerge principal officers of National Assembly since that would automatically qualify their candidates to become members of the party’s National Executive Committee, which is the highest decision arm of the party.
Atiku was never in support of the mock election because he knew Bukola Saraki would be defeated.

With the outcome of the National Assembly leadership elections, there are indications that the Tinubu camp, which many agree, boasts of the likes of Lawan and Akume are not prepared to let the matter rest.
Sources said the Tinubu camp, though still jolted by its initial ‘defeat’ would likely spring a surprise in the days ahead.

It was gathered that members of the Senators Unity Forum, who supported the party’s candidates are queuing behind Tinubu and are likely to continue to do so in the days to come.

Politics / APC Accepts Saraki, Dogara As Senate President And Speaker by NewsINigeria(m): 1:54pm On Jun 13, 2015

APC Accepts Saraki, Dogara as Senate President and Speaker

The All Progressive Congress (APC) may have resolved to accept its destiny without grudges on the outcome of the National Assembly leadership election, as the party has said that there was nothing more to do about the emergence of Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Yakubu Dogara as Speaker, House of Representatives than to live with it for now.

National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Oyegun hinted of the party’s change of mind after the party’s transition committee submitted its report to President Muhammadu Buhari at Defence House.

After the National Assembly election on Tuesday, the APC leadership had, in a statement, announced that it rejected the outcome of the election in its entirety, saying it did not reflect the wish of the party.

But speaking to journalists after the committee’s meeting with Buhari, Oyegun noted that since Saraki and Dogara had been duly elected by their collegues, the party has no choice than to live the reality.

When asked by journalists whether or not the APC will eventually accept Saraki as the Senate president, Oyegun said, “Of course he (Saraki) has been duly elected by his colleagues. We have a reality and we must live with it”.

On whether what was happening in his party was the end of the party as insinuated in some quarters, the party chairman said, “We have faced greater challenges before and this too shall pass away. It is not the first or second time we have passed through and we came out strong. This may not even be the last time, we come out every time stronger and more determined."

Politics / Why Osinbajo Can Not Be Allowed At Security Meetings For Now by NewsINigeria(m): 1:03pm On Jun 12, 2015

Why Osinbajo Can Not Be Allowed At Security Meetings For Now

There has been some disquiet in many quarters over the non-participation of Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, at different security meetings held by President Muhammadu Buhari since assumption of office. One was held on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 while another one was on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 and the Vice-President was not allowed to be at both meetings. A source however explained to Dailypost why the VP cannot attend the meetings for now. Read the reasons below.

“I am sure he would have been invited if he had security background. Being a Professor of Law is fine, but in terms of intelligence and access to security information, you are nowhere near the rank of Colonel or equivalent in the Nigeria Military. Look, I have watched some footages that if the VP gets to see, he would lose appetite for days. Now, we have someone who has been in luxury virtually all his life, attaining the position of VP and some people are clamouring for his presence in highly sensitive talks. The truth is that the military hierarchy would not even feel comfortable saying some things in his presence. I can tell you that they respect Prof. Osinbajo as VP but they cannot trust him with information yet.

You cannot compare him to Buhari who served in many military roles, chased away a militia that was threatening Nigeria security, overthrew a military government, became Head of State, fought corruption and went ahead to instill discipline among a stubborn citizenry. The VP would have to go through what is called ‘Stimulation’. This is a process where he is lectured on terms, dealings, operations etc. of the military. His inner strength, strong heart and ability to keep things to himself will first be put to test before he gets access to some classified materials and information. We must understand the fact that Osinbajo was a candidate promoted by Bola Tinubu (ex-Lagos Governor), he was not handpicked by Buhari. If the President had picked a vice, it is likely that such individual may get the access Osinbajo isn’t getting now. Everyone knows the VP has been loyal to Tinubu for decades and he cannot swear that he would not divulge details of these security meetings to his political godfather. So he has to earn it. Tinubu may have used his influence to put him in this position but he must draw a line between blind loyalty and national duty.”

Politics / Wike Begins Looting In Rivers As Lawmakers Approve N10bn by NewsINigeria(m): 12:24pm On Jun 12, 2015

According to the Rivers State chapter of the APC, Nyesom Wike, the Caretaker Governor of Rivers State, has kick-started his looting spree, which they've been complaining about for some time now.

The party alleged that Wike has prevailed on the State Assembly dominated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to approve N10 billion for him without any projects attached for same.

“Wike has shamelessly confirmed our fears that he has no agenda for the development of Rivers State, rather than looting the common patrimony of the State with impunity, by influencing the State House of Assembly to approve the sum of N10 billion without the purpose of the approval being clearly stated,”

Rivers APC said in the statement signed by the State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya.
Ikanya quoted one of the principal actors in the House of Assembly who is unhappy about the development, as disclosing that the money is meant to be used by Wike to bribe members of the Tribunal hearing petitions arising from the March 28 and April 11 general elections in Rivers State, the Rivers PDP leadership and Rivers State political leaders to enable the Tribunal rule against APC despite the mountain of material evidence presented by the party on how the elections in Rivers State were rigged.

“Part of the fund, we are meant to understand, is to be used to pay off the wife of the former President, Dame Patience Jonathan, Dr Peter Odili and others for imposing Chief Wike on Rivers State against the wishes of our people and against the rotational principle that would have seen the Riverine parts of the State producing the governor after 16 years of rulership by the Upland parts of the State,” Rivers APC said.

Wike, the party said, “perfected this looting spree when immediately after his swearing-in ceremony on 29th May, 2015 he locked out both the Permanent Secretary and the Chief of Staff, Government House, until 31st May, to enable him loot the property in the Government House – after with he turned around to maliciously allege that former Governor, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, looted the place before leaving office.”

Rivers APC, however, vowed not to be blackmailed or intimidated, saying: “All these ploys notwithstanding, we wish to reiterate that no amount of thieving, misappropriation of public funds will deter us from fighting the evil cause Wike’s personality represents. Apart from trying to deny the Riverine areas of their right to produce the next Governor of Rivers State after Amaechi, his illegal imposition forebodes dangerous times for our dear State. Most importantly, we cannot give up the fight to avenge the blood of hundreds of our people killed in order to realise Wike’s mission to capture the Rivers Government House at all cost.”

Politics / National Assembly Members To Leave Office With 109 Suvs, 360 Toyota Camry by NewsINigeria(m): 9:14am On Jun 03, 2015

National Assembly Members to leave office with 109 SUVs, 360 Toyota Camry

Members of the outgoing 7th National Assembly will be taking along with them, 109 jeeps and 360 exotic cars provided as operational vehicles given to them when they assumed office as legislators.

The cars, 109 Prado Landcrusiers for Senators and 360 Toyota Camry 2011 model, are supposed to be returned to management of the National Assembly before the week runs out but according to an agreement reached with the National Assembly management, the Senators and the House of Reps members will pay 30% of the original cost of the cars so that those interested can keep the cars. The 30% will be deducted from their severance pay.

A member of the National Assembly Management team who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said
"The cars have been used for four years, so this valuation has taken cognizance of the years of depreciation. The vehicles are not taken away free of charge and as a matter of fact, it is optional. A lawmaker who does not want to go with the vehicle will submit it to the National Assembly and it will be so documented. The deduction will be done from their severance package at source, which makes it easier. It is a practice that has been on over the years".

According to the source, the National Assembly Members were in 2011 when they assumed office for another tenure, given 300% from their salaries as loans for cars, 250% as Furniture loans and 300% as housing loans.

Lawmakers who took car loans worked out a plan with their banks where their salaries were being paid for the banks to automatically deduct a percentage from their salaries to pay their car loans.

According to the source
“The loans were obtained for the lawmakers through the banks where their salary accounts are domiciled, hence the bankers usually deduct certain percentage agreed upon from their monthly payments to service the car, housing and furniture loans.”he said

Deputy House Majority Leader, Leo Ogor, confirmed the report and said they will take their operational vehicles away if they want to but will pay some money for the car.
“I don’t know what the amount will be; but I know that the cars are not for free. The management of the National Assembly will work it out and communicate to members accordingly”, he said.

Politics / President Buhari: This Is What Nigerians Are Waiting For by NewsINigeria(m): 9:41am On May 28, 2015

President Buhari: This Is What Nigerians Are Waiting For

The ascendancy of Muhammadu Buhari to the exalted office of president and commander–in–chief of the armed forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been heralded by great expectations from the citizenry. And it is for good reason that Nigerians look up to him and his team for remediation of the presently suffocating conditions of living for a cross-section of the society.

That was why the mantra of ‘change’, which drove the campaign of his political party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), enjoyed widespread acceptance across the country, as the results of the recently general polls proved.
As he is sworn into office today, hard-pressed Nigerians will assert the liberty to see the ‘change’ in the fortunes of the country, as promised by his political party.

Change, in the context yearned for, is tantamount to an improvement in the status quo for a majority of Nigerians. It will, therefore, be a monumental disaster if the incoming administration allows itself to be goaded into misreading the imperatives and dimensions of the envisaged change by the flurry of expectations that have trailed the victory of the APC at the polls.
Even from a cursory perspective, the complement of expectations confronting the administration in the wake of the polls qualifies for a most discretional appraisal in order to separate the grain from the chaff. In the context of the expectations, the options open to the administration constitute a paradox of sorts. On the one hand, the less than rosy state of the country’s finances may be seen to restrict its capacity to manoeuvre in the traditional practices of governance. On the other, the same situation challenges it to think outside the box, in order to evolve novel ways and means to further the democratic ethos, which is the main task Nigerians handed over to it at the polls.

In this respect, Nigerians will look forward to see a new deal, which demands that the administration fashions a more responsive framework of relations that will provide better life for the citizenry among the three arms of government and at the federal, state and local levels.
That is why the administration has to open shop with, among other goals, a mindset of restoring the long eroded confidence of the governed in government throughout the country. This it has to do by adopting a holistic perspective of its mission, even without losing sight of the individual areas of intervention, where immediate impact is demanded.

Typical areas for immediate intervention include its avowed commitment to fight insecurity, tackle corruption and address poverty, as well as promote good governance. Other areas are the review of the energy and power sector, improve the political culture and foster the promotion of good governance in general. Yet these goals may prove elusive if the main facility for their attainment – the public service bureaucracy – remains in its present corrupted state of disorder and inefficiency.

Fortunately, the outgoing Jonathan administration is leaving behind legacies of reforms in the public service, even if their full play-out is yet to manifest. They, however, provide valuable stepping-stones (short of re-inventing the wheel), which the incoming administration will find useful in actualising its own political agenda.

Even as the journey before the incoming administration may offer remarkable challenges, a road map built on a vision of reinventing the Nigerian nation will be most rewarding.

Politics / GEJ To Buhari - Don't Single My Administration Out For Probe by NewsINigeria(m): 5:02pm On May 27, 2015

GEJ to Buhari - Don't single my administration out for probe

President Jonathan has asked president-elect Buhari not to single out his administration for any probe his administration may carry out when he assumes power. Speaking during the valedictory session of the Federal Executive Council in Abuja today May 27th, Pres. Jonathan said those who are calling for probe should also demand for probe on how oil wells were allocated in past administrations. (I.e T.Y Danjuma..lol). Recall the Former Defence Minister last week called on Gen Buhari to probe the GEJ administration when he assumes power.

"Some people are even calling for the probe of the government, but I think in Nigeria, there are a lot of many things that will be probed, very many things, even debts owed by states and debts owed by this country from 1960 up to this time. They say it is Jonathan's administration that owes these debts. I believe that anybody that is coming for probe must also ensure that this probe is extended beyond the Jonathan administration. Otherwise, to me, it will be witch-hunt. If we are very sincere, it is not only the Jonathan administration that should be probed." he said.

Politics / Stay Away From Nigeria, NANS Tells Jacob Zuma by NewsINigeria(m): 5:59pm On May 26, 2015

The National Association of Nigerian Students has advised South African President, Jacob Zuma, to stay away from the inauguration of the president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

The organisation also threatened to storm the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, should Zuma step into the country’s airport.

According to the association, Zuma should keep off as his visit will be an insult to the sensibility of Nigerians over his alleged poor handling of the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians and other migrant foreigners in South Africa.

A statement by NANS President, Tijani Usman, noted that Zuma’s inability to “apologise to Nigerians like he did to Mozambique”, despite the sacrifices the country made for South Africa, was unfortunate.

He said, “We wish to advise the South African President (Jacob Zuma) to rather stay at home and address burning issues, rather than embarking on a visit that is the least desirable.

“The South African President’s failure to apologise to Nigeria for the losses the country and our citizens incurred during the xenophobic attacks on foreigners leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. There is therefore, no point felicitating with a people who clearly do not matter much to you. President Zuma’s visit will only amount to pretence.”

NANS further restated its earlier position that it will henceforth not hesitate to clamp down on South African investments in the country should any incident of xenophobic attacks recur.

FG releases N5billion to purchase stoves for rural women

The Federal government has released N5billion for the purchase of stoves for rural women across the country, under the National Clean Cooking Scheme, a programme launched by FG to discourage the use of Firewood for cooking.

Announcing the release of the funds, Minister of Environment, Laurientia Mallam, speaking during an inspection visit to the Velodrome at the National Stadium, Abuja, where some of the 750,000 stoves were being assembled, said the stoves will be distributed through the various Ministries of Environment.

According to The Nation, she said the contractor, Messrs Integra Renewable Energy Services Limited has been given N1.3 billion from the N5 billion released by the Federal Government for the purchase of the stoves. President Jonathan is to inaugurate the programme today.

“We started in the northern parts of the country because of the challenges we are facing there with the desert encroaching into the country and people still cut down trees. Now, the President wants it to spread throughout the country and so we have this project. The ministry has received N5 billion so far. You know when N9.2 billion was approved by the Federal Government last year, we told Nigerians that N9.2 billion has been approved by the Federal Government. But so far, N5 billion has been released to the ministry. We have given the contractor 15 per cent, which is N1.3 billion. That is what we have released to the contractor and we still have N3.7 billion in the ministry’s account.”she said

Jonathan did not starve EFCC of funds - EFCC

Press statement from the EFCC denying that GEJ starved the commission of funds...

The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been drawn to a report in The Sun newspaper of Tuesday, May 26, 2015, entitled, Jonathan Starved EFCC of Funds- Lamorde, in which the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde was quoted as indicting the out-going Jonathan administration of poor performance.

The Commission takes exception to this report which is pure fabrication by the author for reason best known to him.

In the first place, Lamorde who is currently out of the country did not speak with the media and could not have made the comments attributed to him by The Sun newspapers.

The occasion that provided the basis for the false report by The Sun was a media briefing by Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, spokesperson of the EFCC, who addressed more than 40 journalists from over 30 media organizations at the Commission’s monthly media briefing in Abuja on May 25, 2015. At no time during the event did Uwujaren comment on the performance or lack of it, by the Jonathan administration let alone accusing it of poor performance or starving the Commission of funds.

He was only asked a question on the Commission’s view on the focus which the in-coming Buhari administration places on the fight against corruption, to which he responded that the Commission, like most Nigerians who are bothered about the problem of corruption, welcomes the focus which he believes will further empower the EFCC in the pursuit of its mandate of fighting economic crimes and corruption. It is a great disservice to society when journalists fabricates and twist issues to serve motives that are not altruistic.

Grant amnesty to Boko Haram, Northern elders ask Buhari

Prominent northerners including the former Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Mohammed Uwais and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe and former Nigerian Ambassador to the United Nations, Ibrahim Gambari have asked the President -elect, General Muhammadu Buhari to declare amnesty for Boko Haram insurgents when he takes over power on May 29.

They also asked Buhari to give priority attention to the special economic programmes for the North East geopolitical zone which had been ravaged by the Boko Haram terrorists, just as they warned against the scrapping of the on-going amnesty programme for ex-militants in the Niger Delta region

This request was made in a communiqué issued after a two-day conference with the theme: “Security and Governance Challenges in Africa’s largest Democracy,” by the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy, Democracy and Development, SCDDD, as part of its “Nigeria Beyond 12015 Project,” in Abuja yesterday.

The communiqué was signed by Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, founder of Savannah Centre, Major General Ishola Williams, Executive Secretary, Pan-African Strategic and Peace Research Group, PAN-AFSTRAG, Justice Mohammed Uwais- chairman of the occasion and Ambassador Abdullahi Omaki, executive director of the Savannah Centre.

They also called on the Federal Government

‘’to expedite action on the compensation of victims of Boko Haram terrorism and insurgency through the established and funded Victims’ Support Fund,’’ and for urgent priority attention to the special economic programme for the North East by the incoming administration, just as they condemned ‘’the carnage, devastations and displacements, which the Boko Haram group inflicted upon many innocent Nigerians in the north east region.’’

They also called

‘’for the establishment of a special economic programme for the affected states of the North-East, focusing on rehabilitation, resettlement and reconstruction,’’ as well as on the need for ‘’the governors of the North-East States and indeed of the entire North, on the necessity for a blueprint that addresses the issues of vocational and skills-acquisition education for the youths.’’

However, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, dismissed the request saying it would amount to rewarding criminals instead of punishing them for crimes against humanity.

Politics / While Receiving The Interim Report From The 19-man Transition Committee Under Th by NewsINigeria(m): 10:20am On May 22, 2015

7 Days To Inauguration! Buhari Confirms Present Administration Yet To Brief Him

While receiving the Interim Report from the 19-man Transition Committee under the Chairmanship of Alhaji Ahmed Joda in Abuja, Nigeria’s president-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has confirmed that the incoming administration is yet to receive any briefing from the Goodluck Jonathan government as the country prepares for the transfer of power in a week. He however clarifies that his transition committee was not formed to indict the present administration, but to know where to begin from. His words after the cut.

“The incoming government was misunderstood. It is not that we are preparing for indictment. What we are trying to get is a starting point, where we are exactly going to start from.
“We have seen the debt profile and the performance of the economy.

“The question is what we can do about it especially the urgent ones like social security, lack of fuel in the country and fraud. The list is endless.

“I thank you for what you have done and I hope that the subsequent submission by the government will make your job easier and more efficient and tell us where to begin from.”

“My expectations were that each ministry makes its own presentation. The politicians know that they are going while the bureaucrats who do the job know they are staying.

“They are the ones who are going to do the job and they are going to be available to help cross check the information.

“I think that this research you have made will help the incoming government to cross check the information on paper given by the outgoing government,” he said.

Politics / Buhari Will Be A Better President Than Jonathan by NewsINigeria(m): 9:44am On May 22, 2015
[img][/img]http://2.bp..com/-MSTyzOUbDFo/VV7FqGqp3_I/AAAAAAABbDU/knf46PQmrhk/s400/01%2Ba%2BAPC.png

When Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) made his intention known of contesting for the February 14, 2015 Presidential election on the Platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which was postponed to March 28, 2015, a lot was said about Buhari before and after the presidential election which I paid very close attention to and scrutinized every propaganda with my “Psycho-microscopic lens” and found out that although Buhari is not the best leader Nigeria needs, but with the gross incompetence and failure of Jonathan to fight corruption effectively which has worsen Nigeria’s many problems including insecurity, Buhari appears to be more than an angel to many Nigerians when compared with Jonathan.

President Jonathan is the one who has made Buhari to shine in darkness. If Jonathan had led exceptionally well, Buhari won’t have been in the picture. In fact I won’t have advocated for Buhari and I would have written enormous articles for Jonathan and also would have been on the frontline for his reelection. And he would have won his reelection effortlessly. But the truth is that failed the nation.

Just like Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka said, only four sets of people voted for Jonathan:

(1) Those who are intellectually blind, (2) those who are blinded by ethnicity, (3) those who are blinded by corruption and therefore afraid of the unknown, should power change hands, and (4) those who are suffering from a combination of the above terminal sicknesses.
Buhari’s leadership and development ideas and strategies are not coterminous with that of Jonathan so the gap is very wide.

Buhari also has his own achievements and flaws that characterize him.

He is a Nigerian Politician and a retired Major General in the Army who ruled Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état. The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari Military government.
According to Hon. Lawal Garba (a member of the House of Representatives) an appraisal of General Buhari’s leadership qualities, would not be complete without mention of his contribution in the onerous task of keeping Nigeria one and united both before and after the Civil War, his stewardship of the defunct North Eastern State where he served as Military Governor, his role as Minister of Petroleum and Energy and Chairman of the NNPC during the Obasanjo military regime was commended by Obasanjo and many Nigerians. Buhari reached the pinnacle of his carrier in Decembr 1983 when he became Head of State and Commander in Chief of the Armed forces. He was to serve his country once more as Chairman of the defunct Petroleum (special) Trust Fund, PTF (between 1995 and 1999). Buhari is a patriot to the core. He has discharged all his assignments with a sense of mission.

He served in various military formations across the country as a Commanding Officer and was reputed in the military circles as energetic and disciplined Officer. In the wake of the extremist Maitatsine religious uprising in the early 1980s in several Northern states, it was Buhari, who some political distractors now call an extremist that crushed the uprising and saved multi culturalism and religious freedom in that part of the country.

In the face of the crises generated by the 1983 Presidential election, which the opposition parties accused the ruling National Party of Nigeria (NPN) of rigging, coupled with the massive corruption and fraud, the military had to return back to power in December 1983 to save the polity from virtual collapse. The Military regime headed by General Buhari, and Brigadier Tunde Idiagbon (of the blessed memory), who himself a discipline Military Officer, embarked on National cleansing and transformation.

Through the War Against Indiscipline (WAI), the regime contributed to efforts geared towards encouraging behavioral and attitudinal change among Nigerians. In essence, the Buhari regime embarked on an ethical revolution that was directed against bribery and corruption, general indiscipline, drug pushing and other acts that cast the country in bad light and caused national retrogression.

The track record of achievements left by Buhari during his tenure as the Executive Chairman of the defunct PTF, between 1995 and 1999, has made many Nigerians of goodwill who are yearning for a national leadership that would show unreserved commitment for the transformation of the country’s infrastructure and social services system to root for his Presidency. Hon. Garba notes that with only about N60billions, he was able to excellently utilize the funds on accelerated projects of road construction/rehabilitation, food security, water supply, provision of drugs and medical equipment and ambulances to hospitals, refurbishment of educational institution at all levels and empowering them with educational materials and other logistic and so no. the projects which the PTF executed nationwide under Buhari have impacted positively on the common man and have remained so in many places. In comparison to the projects being pursued by the present regime in the country, those executed by the fund were qualitative, cost effective and timely delivered.

The Era of Buhari and Idiagbon was the first and only time that Nigerian public officials were tried and held accountable for their actions in office. In spite of the achievement of Buhari, his military regime indulged in some acts that were not citizen-friendly and one of them was his stand against press freedom.

The regime attempted to stifle criticism. Journalists were harassed, and many critics were arrested. The government of Muhammadu Buhari made no pretence of its intention to censor the media. In an interview with Sunday Concord, Buhari was explicit that he would temper with freedom of the press. According to The Communicator (1985), he was reported to have been particularly Irked by the role the press played in the N2.3 billion oil money controversy when he was the Minister of Petroleum Resources. Shortly after, his administration enacted the Public Officers Protection Against False Accusation Decree No.4, by 1984. In his book Mass Media In Nigeria: Perspective On Growth And Development (2007), Rodney Ciboh writes that the decree came eleven days after two Guardian journalists Messrs Nuduka Irabor and Tunde Thompson were arrested and detained without explanation over a report on ambassadorial appointments carried by The Guardian of April 8, 1984. Tuned Thompson, senior diplomatic correspondent was arrested on April 11, 1984.

The arrest of Nduka Irabor, an Assistant News Editor followed six days later on April 17. For ten days no explanation was given for their arrests. On the eleventh day late Tunde Idiagbon, then Chief of Staff Supreme Headquarters came out to say that Government was embarrassed by a report on diplomatic missions carried by The Guardian of April 8, 1984. The Guardian reports on April 8 titled: “Haruna Replaces Hannaniya As New Uk Envoy” had speculated that then major General Haruna may replace Hannaniya as new U.K envoy. Two previous editions of the paper had also carried stories on diplomatic missions.
The Guardian Journalists were later arraigned on June 4,1984, two months after their arrest, before the Public Officers Protection Against False Accusation Tribual on charges of publishing false statements contrary to Decree 4 of 1984. Their trial lasted for one month. On July 5, 1984, the Justice Olalere Ayinde tribunal jailed each of them to one year imprisonment and fined The Guardian newspaper N50, 000.00 to be paid within 24 hours of the judgment day without appeal. Harassment of Journalists became frequent and government withdrew advertizing from private newspapers and denied them newsprint. Ciboh says that newsprint imported and duly paid for by Concord group was impounded and distributed free to government owned newspapers.

It is my sincere desire that Buhari should lead us very well and should not temper with the freedom of the press this time. Buhari should know that he cannot fight corruption effectively without a free press. The media should be given the freedom to work for the interest of the nation especially when it comes to investigative journalism and reporting corrupt officials.

Senate Presidency: We will not compromise merit - Tinubu

National Leader of APC, Bola Tinubu says the party will not compromise merit as it chooses the new Senate president for the incoming 8th National Assembly. According to Tinubu, the party has ruled out zoning of the seat because it could compromise the credibility and qualification of an individual. He said for anyone to aspire to be the Senate president, such a person must be competent and possess the character of a leader. He said this while speaking to newsmen in Abuja yesterday May 21st.

"Well, you have heard from the party; you have heard from leadership. My desire is not to rock the party. I am a disciplined party man and we will look at it critically. However, the nation is expecting us to take a decisive leadership decision. Merit would not be compromised. You have to be competent; you have to possess the character for the leadership. You have to be PAN Nigerian and be a very solid character to lead the National Assembly and that is what we are talking about,’’ he said.

Politics / PDP Power Battle: Anenih Resigned For Jonathan To Take Over by NewsINigeria(m): 11:50am On May 21, 2015

PDP Power Battle: Anenih Resigned for Jonathan to Take Over

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was in ferment after its National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu‘azu and chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih resigned their positions.

Mu‘azu resigned in a letter addressed to his erstwhile deputy, while Anenih’s letter was fetched from his residence last night after the NWC, issued a deadline due today for him to review his position.

Anenih in his resignation, said that he was resigning in favour of President Goodluck Jonathan to take over as Chairman of the BoT, which is what Patience Jonathan wanted for her husband.

But a senior member of the NWC of the PDP has dismissed the plot as untenable.

Anenih in a one-page letter he signed and sent to President Goodluck Jonathan, dated May 20, 2015, wrote: “Your Excellency will recall that in a conversation I had with you a few weeks ago, I had offered to step down from the office of the Chairman of our party’s Board of Trustees and proposed to hand over to you as its new Chairman in a ceremony that would have taken place on the 23rd of May, 2015. I had also repeated this position in our subsequent meetings.
“As a follow-up to the above proposal and in view of the current state of affairs in our party, I have decided to formally put my offer in writing to enable you effectively assume the Chairmanship of Board of Trustees or approve a process that will enable any other member of the BoT who is considered competent, to assume the position.

“Kindly accept, therefore, this letter as notice of my decision to step down from the position of Chairman of the BoT of our party with effect from today, the 20th of May, 2015.

“I am happy to inform you that, I remain a loyal foundation member of our great party and will continue to pray for the prosperity of Nigeria, our party, and for you and your family.

“Your Excellency, kindly accept the expression of my highest regards.”

Mu'azu's resignation makes PDP a regional party — Tsav
A retired Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, while reacting to the development, said: “I think he has acted very wisely because those urging him to resign felt he is the problem of PDP. Unfortunately those who championed the calls for his resignation were the ones that are supposed to leave the PDP. I am talking about people like Fani-Kayode and Ayo Fayose, whose conducts were embarrassing.

“His resignation has turned the PDP into a regional and tribal party because the North no longer has any top member in the PDP leadership. Now that he has resigned, lets see what becomes of the party.”

Politics / With Fasting And Prayer, Agbaje Will Win At The Tribunal by NewsINigeria(m): 12:00pm On May 19, 2015

With Fasting and Prayer, Agbaje Will Win At The Tribunal

The Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party Youth Leaders Forum has asked the party’s supporters to pray and fast in order for the governorship petition of the party to be favourably considered by the Election Petitions Tribunal.

The group also called on its supporters to come forward with information and documents to strengthen the petition of its governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje.

The Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr. Abiodun Abari, who addressed journalists on Monday, said through fasting and praying, “Agbaje’s stolen mandate would be retrieved.”

The group condemned the impeachment of the Chairman of the PDP, Capt. Tunji Shelle (retd.), describing it as a distraction.

It urged the party members and supporters to channel their energies towards ensuring victory for Agbaje and the two senatorial candidates of the party, Segun Adewale of the Lagos-West senatorial district and Chief Olabisi Salis of Lagos-East senatorial district.

While restating its support for Shelle, the group warned that it would resist any attempt to undermine the peace and unity of the party, adding that it was confident that the party would emerge victorious at the tribunal.

Abari said, “We condemn the way and manner the aggrieved persons rushed to the press without exploring available options to resolve their grievances internally. We urge all the aggrieved parties to maintain the status quo in the interest of peace and the sensitivity of the period.

“We urge our teeming youths to remain calm and focused in retrieving our mandate despite the confusion which we see as the agenda of the opposition. For our candidates to have put up such a performance in the face of institutionalised collusion between the Independent National Electoral Commission and the opposition to rig in favour of the latter is heroic and unprecedented.

“The silence resulting from the sham elections conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos is palpable. Hence, we urge all party supporters to support the party’s cause at the tribunals by providing documents, evidence, and of course through prayer and fasting so that we can retrieve our various stolen mandate.”

Politics / Summit: Patience Jonathan Denies Blocking Buhari’s Wife by NewsINigeria(m): 11:10am On May 13, 2015

Summit: Patience Jonathan Denies Blocking Buhari’s Wife

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, has denied media reports that her plan to host the 8th summit of the African First Ladies Peace Mission on Friday is designed to deny the wife of the President-elect, Hajia Aisha Buhari, the opportunity of becoming the President of the mission.

Mrs. Jonathan, who is the current President, had summoned a meeting of the mission during which new executive members are expected to emerge.

Media reports had it that the election would have been held in July but the President’s wife brought it back to May to allow her successor to emerge before her husband will cease to be President from
May 29.

But a statement by Mr. Ayo Adewuyi, on Tuesday said there was no truth in the reports.

PUNCH reports that Adewuyi explained that Mrs. Jonathan was elected President in July 2012 and was meant to serve for two years, according to the group’s internal regulation.

He further said that while her tenure ought to have ended in 2014, when a fresh election should have held, the President’s wife drew the attention of her colleagues to the then forthcoming election in Nigeria, which preparation would not enable her host the summit.

According to him, Mrs. Jonathan therefore proposed that the summit should hold after the general elections, and it was accordingly agreed that it should be held in July 2015.

Adewuyi however added that there was an understanding among members that if President Goodluck Jonathan did not succeed in his re-election bid, the President’s wife would convene the summit in May to enable the election of a new President and ensure a smooth handover since her tenure has ended.

The statement read in part, “Arising from the above, it is therefore clear that this is not a personal matter nor specifically a Nigeria sole affair but a continental platform governed by its own rules and protocols just as similar international organisations.

“It would therefore be out of place for anyone to insinuate that it is intended to shut out the incoming First Lady. This cannot be farther from the truth.

“We state therefore without any iota of equivocation that it is mischievous for anyone to scheme to cause disaffection between the outgoing and incoming First Ladies, Dame Patience Jonathan, and Hajia Aisha Buhari.

“Let us therefore come together in our tradition of hospitality to heartily welcome our guests, the African First Ladies, as they arrive Abuja for the 8th Summit of the Mission.

“Let us always remember that the personal ambition of anybody is not worth destroying the image of the nation.”
