@NAIRATREND.COM.NG Relatives of victims in the four-storey building which collapsed on Friday in Abuja have protested the decision of the Federal Capital Territory Administration to end the rescue operation at the site on Saturday. They were dispersed by policemen who fired tear gas and shot in the air. The angry youths insisted that about 18 victims were still trapped under the rubble, but the FCT Administration said there was no indication that anyone was buried under the debris. The rescue team consisting of officials of FCT Emergency Management Agency, National Emergency Management Agency, firefighters and Julius Berger Plc ended the rescue operation around 8am after they failed to find victims. But the youths who were annoyed by the removal of the payloaders and other equipment attempted to take over the site, insisting that many victims were still trapped under the debris and should be rescued. A tricycle rider, Mustapha Musa, said his younger brother, Aliu, 23, was among those trapped under the rubble, adding that his elder brother, Ali Mohammed, 30, who was among the victims that were rescued died while being taken to the hospital. “I have a brother there. Yesterday (Friday) we called our brother and we were talking to him on phone, but he was complaining of the heat. This morning (Saturday), we called him but we did not get him. So the government did not do anything and our people are still under the rubble,” he insisted. The Coordinator, Abuja Municipal Metropolitan Council, Umar Shuaibu, who was at the scene on Saturday explained that the rescue workers could not find any signs of life or body, adding that they deployed the necessary equipment for the job. He disclosed that only one died out of the seven victims that were rescued, insisting that no other casualty was discovered during the overnight rescue operation. “We worked overnight with floodlight, we were able to comb out everything and found that there is no single person buried anywhere under this rubble. We combed everywhere even where we don’t expect to have bodies, the machines went and did a professional job. “Apart from the initial victims, we have one dead and six people were injured, apart from them, no other casualty was discovered,” Shuaibu stated. The AMMC boss said that investigation had commenced to find out possible lapses to prevent a recurrence, adding that the debris would be evacuated. He warned scavengers to keep off the site, cautioning that anyone found at the scene would be arrested by the security personnel. @NAIRATREND.COM.NG THE immediate past Senate Minority Leader and former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio, now of All Progressives Congress, APC, Akwa Ibom North West, yesterday vowed that the Senate would declare seats of Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, former Peoples Democratic PDP, national Chairman, Barnabas Gemade, Senators Rabiu Kwankwaso; Dino Melaye; Usman Nafada; Suleiman Hunkuyi and others who dumped APC for PDP vacant. Akpabio Others are Senators Abdullahi Danbaba;Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi; Rafiu Ibrahim; Ida Hamman Misau; Monsurat Sunmonu; Suleiman Nazif and Abdulaziz Nyako. Answering questions from journalists in Abuja, Senator Akpabio who last Wednesday dumped the PDP for the APC, said he was not disturbed over calls from some quarters that his seat in the upper Chamber be declared vacant. Akpabio, who was blocked at the foyer of the National Assembly and asked if he was perturbed about reports that his seat should be declared vacant, said, “Even as you are looking at me, do I look perturbed? I have not heard the report. Because the reason why I think that is a rumour is that there is, at the moment, no division in the APC. The APC is one family. If you hear about R-APC that was not really a political party. That was not a division, it has since been consumed in what they call Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP). So, there is no division. And so, any defection from APC to PDP, we will like to declare those seats vacant.” On the question that the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole had said severally that the party would get Saraki impeached and that Constitution says two-third is required to effect such an impeachment and how he has mobilized for this, Akpabio said, “I just came in from Ikot-Ekpene, where I decided with my people to join APC. I’m yet to be briefed on any of those items. I have not heard anything. What I am hearing now is what you are telling me. But why don’t you wait for me to formally talk to you? I believe that when the National Assembly resumes you will hear from me directly. So, exercise patience.” When asked to confirm if the National Assembly will reconvene on Wednesday, the Senator said, “I have noted all your reports. We are also in Abuja. So, thank you for the reports.” When asked what he had found out, Akpabio said: “You are the one telling me. That’s what I’m saying.” GIST VIA - https://nairatrend.com.ng/well-declare-saraki-kwankwasogemademelayemisau-others-seats-vacant-akpabio/

@NAIRATREND.COM.NG Human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN), has called on the acting Director-General of the Department of State Services, Matthew Seiyefa, to immediately release all illegally detained suspects which he claimed to be over 100. Falana said this in a letter addressed to the new DSS boss on Sunday. The activist, therefore, advised Seiyefa to see his appointment as an opportunity to purge the DSS of the rot that characterised the Lawal Daura era. Falana recalled that Daura blatantly ignored court orders and even went as far as arresting judges who he could not cow into submission. He said, “Apart from not obtaining orders from magistrate courts for the remand of suspects in line with section 293 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, Mr Daura treated the orders of several courts for the release of detainees with contempt. “He became so power-drunk that he harassed judges and lawyers who challenged his penchant for subverting the rule of law. At a stage, we had to remind him that the brutal military dictators who trained minions like him did not succeed in cowing us into submission when we were fighting for the restoration of democratic rule in the country.” The senior advocate noted that a former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.); the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife Zeinab, as well as a journalist, Jones Abiri, were unjustly detained for years by Daura. He said in the case of El-Zakzaky, Daura refused to allow him to get medical treatment abroad despite the fact that he had sustained an eye injury when he was being manhandled by soldiers. Falana lamented that while Daura carried out his duties with total disregard for human rights, none of his superiors could caution him. He called on the new DSS boss to refocus the agency such that it would stop usurping the powers of the police, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and other agencies of government. Falana asked the new DSS boss to discontinue the charges pending against Abiri and Peter Opume at the Wuse Magistrate Court; release the hundreds of detainees that are languishing without trial in the various detention centres of the DSS and release Col. Dasuki and other criminal suspects who had been admitted to bail by municipal and regional courts. He added, “Release Sheik El-Zakzaky and his wife from illegal custody in line with the orders of the Federal High Court; respect the rights of suspects to consult legal practitioners of their choice before making, endorsing or writing any statement or answering any question put to them after the arrest. “Draw the attention of all DSS investigators to the Anti-Torture Act of 2017 which has criminalised the use of torture in all security agencies; ensure that all detention facilities of the DSS are inspected monthly by the visiting Judge of the Federal High Court in accordance with the provision of section 34 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.” GIST VIA - https://nairatrend.com.ng/falana-urges-dss-acting-dg-to-release-dasuki-el-zakzaky-others/

@NAIRATREND.COM.NG Arsenal goalkeeper, Petr Cech has explained why his side lost to Manchester City in their Premier League opener on Sunday evening. Goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva in either half of the match ensured that City defeated Unai Emery’s men 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium. Cech believes the Gunners made lots of mistake during the second half of the encounter, adding that they lacked invention to find the killer pass against the Premier League champions. “We feel that we could have got something from the game,” Cech told BBC Sport. “In the second half, we forced them to make mistakes and we had some opportunities. Unfortunately, we lacked invention to find the killer pass. “When you play against a team of City’s quality and confidence it is always going to be difficult. “Inevitably, you can make a few mistakes. It was a shame we couldn’t finish off our counter-attacks and overall we’re disappointed with the defeat.” Arsenal will face Chelsea in their next EPL game on Saturday.
