PDP says it uncovers fresh plot to arrest Saraki, Ekweremadu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it has uncovered a fresh plot to arrest Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.


The party also alleged that the budget of the electoral commission, INEC, sent to the National Assembly by the presidency last month, had been sent to the presidency by the electoral commission since February.

The opposition party made these allegations in a statement by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, on Sunday.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has again uncovered a plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the cabal in the Buhari Presidency to use compromised security agencies and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to invite, arrest and detain Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.


This is just as the PDP has unraveled fresh facts confirming that the pressure by the Presidency for the reconvening of the Senate is out of a sinister motive and not for any emergency in the approval of the budget of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2019 election.

The fresh plot to detain the two presiding officers is part of renewed design to keep them out of circulation, ahead of Senate resumption, so as to enable the heavily induced APC senators, who are now in the minority, to throw up two of their members as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively on the excuse that Saraki and Ekweremadu failed to show up for proceedings in the Senate.


The PDP notes that the new plot to cage Saraki and Ekweremadu, in devilish rehash of the Tuesday July 24, 2018 hostage-taking and invasion of their official residences by security agencies is coming after the August 7, 2018 failed attempt to use security forces to take control of the leadership of the Senate.

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State has called for the cancellation of the results of the just concluded bye-election in the state.

The State PDP Chairman, Samuel Uhuotu, made the call on Sunday barely one day after the outcome of the poll was announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Uhuotu alleged gross irregularities in the exercise, saying the election was marred by thuggery, vote buying and violence which purportedly led to the death of some voters.

According to him, the cancellation of more than 19,000 votes by the electoral umpire places the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) at an undue advantage over the PDP.

Apart from the cancellation of the results, the opposition party also asked the government to prosecute some officials of the Kogi State government.

The PDP Chairman claimed the officials were present at some polling units, despite the fact that they were not from the constituency.

INEC Returning Officer, Professor Rotimi Ajayi, had declared Mr Haruna Isah of the APC as the winner of the bye-election conducted in Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency on Saturday.

Professor Ajayi said Isah polled 26,860 votes to defeat his rival from the PDP, Bashir Abubakar, who scored 14,845 votes.

Randie Chima, a Senior Special Assistant to the Anambra state Governor, Willie Obiano has been found dead in his room.
According to Punch, neighbours at his residence in Nwakpodulu Avenue, Awka had to force his door open after nobody heard from him, and found his corpse.

A friend who spoke to the daily said he was with Chima and he was looking healthy.

The friend said “I’m surprised to hear this story. That Randie is dead? We were together on Friday. He was hale and hearty. A good man is gone. Randie exercised almost regularly at Ekwueme Square.”

The Anambra state police spokesman, Haruna Mohammed said the Governor’s aide was rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, where doctors certified him dead.

He also said that his men have launched an investigation to determine the cause of his death.

”There was a report at B Division, Awka, that one Randie Chima, aged 57 years, of Nwakpodulu Avenue and SSA to Anambra State Governor on Audio Visual Productions, slept the previous night and did not open his door the next day.

“When the door was eventually forced opened after several knocks by his neighbours, his body was found lying on the bed.

“Following the report, Police detectives attached to B Division, Awka, led by the DCO, visited the scene, photographed the victim and rushed him to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka, where he was certified dead by a medical doctor.

”No marks of violence and no foul play suspected at the moment,” Mohammed added.

Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka has opened up on how ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo knelt down for Atiku Abubakar in 2013.

Soyinka made the revelation yesterday while giving a rare insight into the high-stake lobbying and negotiations that preceded the PDP’s presidential primaries in which Atiku was highly favoured to win at the expense of his then boss Obasanjo.

Besides, Soyinka spoke on how genuine efforts by Chief Bola Ige to reposition the energy sector as Power Minister between 1999 and 2000 were sabotaged by Obasanjo.

Soyinka was replying a question at a special reading session to mark the presentation of his latest book, “Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?: Gani’s Unfinished Business”, at the Freedom Park, Lagos.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Louis Odion, one-time Edo State Information Commissioner and The Nation columnist, asked the literary giant whether he believed a sensational claim last year by Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose of witnessing Obasanjo going down on his knees in Tripoli before the late President Muamar Ghaddafi in his desperate bid to secure the Libyan strongman’s support for an extension of his chairmanship of the African Union (AU), since the former Nigerian President has neither denied nor confirmed the account.

Fayose’s account was published by an Abuja-based monthly magazine, The Interview.

Ghaddafi was younger than Obasanjo. Libya is smaller in size and population compared to Nigeria.

Responding, Soyinka said he had no cause to doubt Fayose, given his knowledge of how Obasanjo did the “unthinkable” when his aspiration for a second term in office was similarly threatened in 2003.

Said he: “Before the PDP primaries in January 2003, Obasanjo got everyone he knew could reach me on the surface on the earth including Yemi Ogunbiyi and my son, to get me to help him intercede when it was clear that (Abubakar) Atiku was in a position to take his job. He knew Atiku had a lot of regard for me and calls me ‘Uncle’.”

In the now famous BBC interview few days to PDP’s 2003 primaries, Atiku had declared that he was under tremendous pressure from his supporters to contest the ticket against Obasanjo but was yet to make up his mind in what triggered panic in Obasanjo’s camp.

“The pressure was intense,” the literary giant recounted. “Of course, I could not have knelt before Atiku not to embark on a course of action that would lead to his boss’ disgrace. But I can confirm to you that Obasanjo as President knelt down before Atiku so that he would not lose his job.

“But I warned Atiku that for making Obasanjo to kneel down for you, be sure you would have to pay heavily for that. I guess my warning came to pass if you remember Atiku’s dramatic change of fortune once Obasanjo was sworn in for a second term of office.”

As expected, yesterday’s book reading turned out a day of reminiscences of many bizarre dramas and unsavory episodes that characterised Obasanjo’s reign as two-term president betweeen 1999 and 2007. The panel of disscussants included frontline rights activist-lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) and Mr. Sam Omatseye, author and Chairman of “The Nation” Editorial Board, and was moderated by Mr. Kunle Ajibade, award-winning author and Executive Director of “TheNews/Tempo”.

The roll-call at the event included literary colossus Prof. J. P. Clark, Colonel Tony Nyiam (retd) and Mr. Jahman Anikulapo.

Dispelling the notion that the long-running disagreement he has with Obasanjo is personal, Soyinka said his motivation is the desire that those he described as cause of the nation’s problems do not continue to recycle themselves as the solution.

He also dismissed Obasanjo as a hypocrite for denying that he did not have a hand in the third term agenda in 2006.

Said the playwright: “I remember I was invited to a conference in Germany around the time the third term game was unfolding in Nigeria. Then, I received this frantic call from officials at the Nigerian embassy who confided in me that they had been told to prepare for Obasanjo’s third term in office.

They expressed fears that should it succeed, the country might be plunged into a serious crisis. They were of the view that I could use my leverage to talk to him or help mobilise public opinions to dissuade him.

“At the conference proper, I made sure I continually made poignant innuendos in the direction Obasanjo sat that day. But, typically, he kept shrugging his shoulders and looking the other way.

“But when the opportunity came for a closer interaction at the dinner, I pointedly told him that ‘Obasanjo, you know you cannot try third term’. Suddenly, he charged back at me, saying, ‘Wole, you only have one vote!’

I remember the Nigerian envoy then to Germany, Prof. Tunde Adeniran, jovially remarked that, ‘Ah, Mr. President, Wole Soyinka has more than one vote o. You know when he says anything, people listen across the world.’

“As soon as Obasanjo left the venue, I told Adeniran that ‘with what you’ve just said, be sure you’ve lost your job’. True, soon afterwards, Adeniran lost his job.”

Corroborating Soyinka, Falana said contrary to Obasanjo’s continued denial, the former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice alluded in her book to how the former Nigerian leader prevailed on George Bush to support his third term bid. This, Falana said, Obasanjo never refuted.

On the parlous energy situation in the country, Soyinka recalled that Obasanjo did not only frustrate Ige but also humiliated him.

He said: “This was a man who said after Bola Ige died that we put somebody there, Bola Ige who did not know his left from right. He owes Bola Ige for maligning him, after humiliating him after sabotaging his genuine efforts to transform the power sector. It was sabotage and nothing less than a terrorist act against the electricity supply of the country.

“Bola Ige was frustrated and his works sabotaged. In fact, he had done his homework before he took office. He summoned a group of experts and mapped out the transformation of the sector. But, he was sabotaged from the inside. Bola Ige asked Obasanjo to remove one Suleman Bello, who was the managing director of the corporation then.

The consequences we are suffering today. Obasanjo collaborated and protected the system headed by Mr. Suleman Bello. I dare Obasanjo to meet me one on one on any podium to debate the power project.”

It is a final few people anticipated when football's global showpiece kicked off four weeks ago.

Croatia have brought joy to their Balkan nation of just four million people by defying the odds to progress to the final while reigning champions Germany, then Argentina and Brazil all fell by the wayside in Russia.

They have been inspired by mercurial midfielder Luka Modric while coach Zlatko Dalic, who only took over last year with the squad in chaos, has coaxed remarkable performances from his team.

Deschamps would become only the third man to win the World Cup as both a player and a manager – he was captain when France lifted the World Cup in 1998.

His France side, spearheaded by 19-year-old forward Kylian Mbappe and the more seasoned Antoine Griezmann, are the favourites.

The cavernous 80 000-capacity Luzhniki will be the setting for the final, but the biggest celebrations will take place on the streets of the winning country.

Tens of thousands of people poured onto the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris after France's semifinal win against Belgium and expectations at home are high.

"Of course we know what's happening in France, all the more so after seeing all the images after the Belgium game," goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said on Saturday.

"But tomorrow we will be coming up against opponents of great quality. They deserve to be in the final just as much as us.

"They have demonstrated their worth and that they have the physical and mental resources to go and win it."

Croatia have shown impressive resolve to withstand three successive matches that went to extra-time – Mario Mandzukic's winner in the 109th minute defeated England in the semifinal on Wednesday.

Dalic said on Saturday he was prepared to make changes for the final if any of his players have failed to recover from their exertions.

"Tomorrow is the World Cup final. Simply, the players know what that is," the coach said.

"One thing that brings me happiness is that all my players tell me if they are not 100 percent fit.

"They know what is at stake, but if they are unable to give their all they will tell us."

Ivan Perisic, who scored and set up Mandzukic's winner against England, was among five Croatian players to miss training on Friday.

"We need relaxation and rest to gain freshness for tomorrow," Dalic said.

Singer Chris Brown was arrested for battery following a concert in Florida, authorities said Friday, the troubled star’s latest brush with the law.

Police seized the R&B star shortly after he left the stage Thursday night in West Palm Beach. He was booked on a charge of felony battery and released after he paid a $2,000 bond, the sheriff’s office said.
The Palm Beach County sheriff’s office said that Brown was arrested on a warrant from Tampa but did not give specifics.

The celebrity news site TMZ said the warrant was related to an incident last year when Brown punched an in-house photographer during a paid appearance at a nightclub.

The singer was due to return to Tampa on Friday for a concert as part of an ongoing tour.

Brown, 29, has a long history of violence. In May, a Los Angeles woman said she was lured to the singer’s house and repeatedly raped by him and a rapper.

Prominent lawyer Gloria Allred called it “one of the most horrific cases involving alleged sexual assault that I have ever seen.”

Most notoriously, Brown in 2009 was convicted of beating fellow singer Rihanna, who was then his girlfriend and was forced to miss the Grammy Awards due to her injuries.

In 2016, he was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon following a standoff with Los Angeles police, after a woman said he threatened her at his home.

He also pleaded guilty to assaulting a fan in Washington in 2014 and was accused of violence by a woman in Las Vegas.

Brown was discovered by record label scouts when he was a boy working at his father’s gas station in Virginia. First identified as a rapper, he quickly found success with his rich singing voice but he has been in the news more often in recent years for his legal troubles.

An Ilorin Magistrates’ Court on Thursday remanded in prison a farmer, Kabiru Garuba, for allegedly cutting off the left hand of one Mohammed Haliru, a herdsman.

Chief Magistrate Kudirat Yahaya, who ordered that the accused be remanded at the Federal Prison Yard, Oke-Kura, Ilorin, adjourned the case till July 12 for further mention.

The prosecutor, Insp Mathew Olongbonsaye, told the court that the accused, a resident of Kpada Village in Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, had cut off the victim’s hand for grazing his cattle on his farmland.

He said the accused was arraigned on a charge of causing grievous hurt, which contravenes Section 247 of the Penal Code.

Ologbonsaye said the accused was arrested following a complaint lodged on June 10 at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Patigi, by one Wakili Abubakar of Fulani Camp, Reshe-Kpada Village, Patigi.


Abubakar, according to the prosecutor, had claimed that the accused attacked Haliru, his nephew, with a cutlass.

The prosecutor had also objected to bail for the accused, urging the court to remand him in prison custody pending the determination of the case.
