Sanusi: NNPC Should Be Audited | President Shouldn’t Be Petroleum Minister
Muhammadu Sanusi II, a former emir of Kano, has called for the audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.
He made this known during the Bank Directors’ Association of Nigeria conference, in Abuja on Wednesday.
Sanusi said the country needs to shine the light on NNPC in the areas of revenue generation and oil production
“The finance minister can not tell you because he doesn’t have a metering system that reports to him,” he said.
“The finance minister can not tell you that today, this is how many barrels of oil that we produce and export here. He can only rely on NNPC telling him. Those barrels are revenue; they belong to finance. We have been talking about this for 10 years. We need a metering system.
“The finance ministry needs to know how much oil we are producing everyday, selling, and where the money is going.”
Sanusi said if the leakages are not fixed in the system — the dollar revenue issue — the exchange rate problem will not be fixed.
“Oil is not going to grow our GDP, I have always said that. If you took out all the oil in Nigeria today and sold it, it would raise our per capital income to maybe $4,000,” he said.
According to Sanusi, oil will ‘never enrich’ the country but it is a working capital for an import-dependent economy.
He said the country can not afford to continue producing oil and not receive revenue in return.
“We are no longer paying subsidy, so where are the dollars? Before it was under recovery, now we do not have underestimate. Where is the money?” he asked.
Speaking further, Sanusi said petroleum exploration licences given to unworthy players should be revoked for maximum revenue.
He also said the country would earn more revenue by moving to alternative energy.
‘PRESIDENT SHOULDN’T BE PETROLEUM MINISTER’
Sanusi said Nigeria should have a petroleum minister and the president of the country should not occupy the office.
“Let me advise that the idea of the president being petroleum minister. The last president was minister of petroleum for eight years,” he said
“When I was governor of CBN, we had a petroleum minister. So when we talk about NNPC, I could attack Diezani, now nobody can talk about petroleum because in 8 years if you talk, you are attacking the president.”
He said a minister who is to be held accountable should be in the office.
Senator Ireti Kingibe, the sole Labour Party member in the Nigerian Senate, has revealed that fixing Nigeria is proving more daunting than she initially anticipated.
Speaking on Arise TV, Kingibe said that even President Bola Tinubu, who won the recent election, is also shocked by the fact that the country is not as fixable as it appeared before their election.
Kingibe’s admission comes as the Labour Party continues to advocate for a new era of selfless leadership in Nigeria. The party’s rise to prominence stemmed largely from the widespread support for its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, who finished second in the election.
Recall that prior to the presidential election, Kingibe, while canvassing for support for the Labour Party, said that Peter Obi has what it takes to tackle Nigeria’s problems.
Panel of Discussants at the NLC Side Event at COP 28 in Dubai Yesterday , Speaking on Workers Perspective in demanding for Safety Net For Workers as the World Transitions.
Present and leading the discussion at the Sideline event is the NLC President , Comrade Joe Ajaero
Nigeria Labour Congress HQ
Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said at the COP28 that the body will ensure that social safety nets and insurance policies are provided for workers who may lose their jobs in the face of the global energy transition.
As the world begins the move away from fossil fuels, there have been calls for a ‘just transition‘ that leaves no one — including persons who work in fossil fuel companies, and whose jobs might be affected — behind.
At the ongoing COP28 in Dubai, the NLC organised a side event with the theme: ‘Justice for workers in the just transition’, aimed at pushing for rights of workers as talks to move to cleaner energy gains momentum globally.
“Despite the global perception of job losses, I don’t seem to believe so, especially coming from the energy sector,”
“A transition that will bring about energy sufficiency and eradicate power poverty would be almost 100,000 megawatts or more. And then this diversification in the process of bringing clean energy will create more jobs and not job losses.
“Yes we battle to reduce emissions, however, more jobs will be created. These are virgin areas that if we manage well and check the level of emissions, we’ll have more workers working.
“However, in anticipation of the transition, as representatives of workers organisations, we’re going to make provisions for social safety nets, pension policies and insurance policies for people who may lose their jobs.
“I think that’s an area for us because the pension and insurance policies today are grossly inadequate.”
