Bro, With this submission, we may like collaborate on some ideas & project. Fingers crossed. Am following you.

Marriott1980:
@jasper7 this is my first time of coming across your thread and i read from page 1 to the end, while reading it my head was about exploding because i just fell in love with everything you do and the whole process. This is what i have always wanted for Nigeria as regards agriculture, if educated people like you can go into agriculture, then the future of agriculture in Nigeria is bright.

As someone that live in the unuted states, i go to the fruit market and i weep for Nigeria because of the infrastructure and how they keep everything and everywhere clean and neat. im in the process of buying land in America to start my own farming too.

This is all i wanna say, as regards the processing and packaging using crates, its a wonderful idea and a great development. However, if you need anything from here in the states to help you with the proper packaging of your products and technical know how of how they store their vegetables and fruits here that makes it available all year round, dont hesitate to ask and i will do my best to help you out with it.

God bless you real good and i wish you all the best.

9. PACKING & STORAGE

This is one area that have been overlooked by @Jasper & his team.

With the size & magnitude of JIREH1 & Proper packaging, JIREH1 shld be dictating the market trend & not follow the market. You can not be selling in sack like illetrates and hope to make good returns.

With the resoursce at your disposal, you shld be able to channel resources to take care of these & thus distate the market. It's a very STRONG oversight on you part to start JIREH1 without thinking of packaging & storage.

If Tomato section in Mile12 market, Lagos can introduce plastic crates for tomatoes (through DFID/UKaid), so cld JIREH1

http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/06/from-basket-to-plastic-crates-mile-12-tomato-dealers-turn-new-leaf/

jasper7:
8. Control Your market: As much as possible, try to sell in a market you have control over. A market that needs you, not mile12. That market does not need us, we tend to need it more than it needs us so it tends to dictate our every move.

I have a lot of Ideas on this one, I cannot start sharing now. But take a moment to think about it.

Agriculture › Re: Invest In My 20 Hectare Watermelon/cucumber Farm by Newway2(m):
Oga @Jasper7,
Having read your thread abt the mistakes of of JIREH1, and having raised it here, you shld not start JIREH2 with taking into cognisance the "PACKAGING" of the produce. With the resoursce at your disposal, you shld be able to pull this off. It's a very STRONG oversight on you part to start JIREH1 without thinking of packaging & storage.

I learnt that Tomato section in Mile12 market, Lagos; have introduced plastic crates for tomatoes through DFID/UKaid.

http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/2015/06/from-basket-to-plastic-crates-mile-12-tomato-dealers-turn-new-leaf/

jasper7:
Thanks for this, very useful posts indeed! helping to improve the work we are already doing. You've have ignited back a fire in me that was beginning to burn low. Having a better packaging for products and dictating market price has been the major reason behind the Jireh project. Now that the production aspect is stabilizing, I think this will be the target in 2016.
We can not continue to do the same old thing & expect a different result. Why shld we always wait for foreigners to come & tell us what to do? Why shld Shoprite come here & start importing banana when we have abundance banana here? All is due to poor packaing on our part. This is not rocket science & we can do it.

jasper7:
Uncle, very helpful pictures. As I saw this picture, I just felt like eating the fruits from the picture grin. This is the effects of packaging. I believe if kenya can do it. I can also do it. I have a mega-project in mind in 2016. I hope to retire from full time farming very soon and enter into complete food processing and vegetables marketing. I will still need to steal some ideas from you when the time is right wink
Even if you go into food process without solving the storage problem, there will still a problem. because, how do you store excess farm produce during the glut season?
We eat apples daily in Nigeria (year-in-year-out), with little variation in price. These apples I understand are only harvest in few months of the year but stored all through the year even for export. How did thoses people do it? I say again that, this is not rocket science & we can do it.

Let me know abt the BIG idea for possible collaboration (if you don't mind).

As @Theunbeatable will say, May GOD bless our hustles.

Sincerely.

Hello my Oga @ d top!
Happy New Year. I pray that Almighty GOD will bless our hustle this year.
I hv not contacted u since because I was bereaved d day after I came to ur farm. Am through with all d ceremonies & will visit u soon because my vegetable farm must start this month o.

I can see that the vegeies on the farm are really doing well.

Keep up the good work.

Once again, may God bless our hustle.

See u soon.

You can pay a visit to our farm. We sell majorly to our customers in Mile12, we also sell to local buyers around us especially when the quantity of produce to sell is low and we are building business relationships with hotels, restaurants, and retail outlets. You need to move around and ask questions.

NL-Agric is a knowledge based forum where everybody learn. Multiplication of thread does not make the whole infomation to be on the same board, thereby not making the thread to be rich. The thread/forum/board is not owned by ANYBODY. The Initator is just that.......an INITIATOR. C'est finnie!

For example this thread on Catfish ..............
https://www.nairaland.com/1240657/hidden-truths-catfish-business/242

.......... Was started in Mar 2013, & it has been a centrepoint of information/knowledge dissemination over the years. It has numerous contributors &expert contributing to & shapping the business with their submissions on the thread.

So my dear comrade @TheUnbeatable, there's nothing like derailment if it's the same topic. You are welcome & your contribution will be blessing to others.

As you used to say, God bless our hustle!

Agriculture › Re: A Nairalander's Tour To The Farms And Major Markets In The Northern Nigeria. by Newway2(m): 4:46pm On Jan 04, 2016
Very true. Seems Ibijoke's profile (both online & real world) might have been (carefully) hijacked/compromised
1st Observation:
The pix of Ibijoke (with d child & her husband) in d begining of the thread does not match/resemble her Facebook pix

2) There was no reason for her to be pushing her daughter pix forcefully (upon pple's faces) thereby playing on pple's emotions if not for prior ulterior motives.

3) Anybody that has gone through what she claimed to have gone through will not celebrate xmas lavishly & display the pix as she did. She did it delibrately.

Has anybody out of the various investor describe her? Is she the dark lady in the thread or the fair lady on her facebook page or the plump lady with child in the "WonTouchFarms &Agro Ltd"

These are just my own observations having read lots of "James Hadley Chase JHC" in those days. I may be wrong.

To all the pple that have been duped, pls accept my sympathy.

Jessam:
Great inspirational lady, unfortunately seems someone has not only hijacked her profile on nairaland but in the real world too posing as her and ripping people off. why would she go as far as posting her pics of her kid, herself and her husband online and then set about ripping people off, Her life would clearly be in danger, apparently her address is also known to nairalanders.

My advice is to be careful to establish the identity of a person you meet online before doing business with them

So what can we do? & How can we do it? Honestly, I cringe everytime, I see farm produce go waste. How can we stop this crop by crop?

Pavore9:
It is all about preservation. Most of the Apples that get imported into Nigeria are not freshly harvested, months or maybe a year old but still looking fresh!
Agriculture › Re: Growing The Red Stark Apple. by Newway2(m): 9:24am On Jan 04, 2016
Oga @pavore9,
If apple harvesting is only twice in a year, how come we get the same apple in Lagos at same price all through the year (hardly any noticable price variations).

If the red apple, harvested twice a year & imported into Nigeria cld have a stable price, how come our own produce have wide price variations every year? E.g Plantain, Banana, Oranges, Pine-apples, peper, vegetables.

When are we going to start having stable prices for our own Agric products?

Pavore9:
Ok. Will keep everyone posted on this thread. Finally got the first of taste it yesterday as they are presently harvesting. They harvest twice a year August and late December/early January.

Are you already or familiar with Aquaponics? Can you share your experinces here (in this tread) for the benefit of everybody? This will go a long way towards removing the myth that only "Oyinbo" fit do am.

But from the pix of the green house Aquaponic farm of Rev Sisters shown by @pavore at the beging of the thread, it's obvious that it's not rocket science & one use local & common materials to build it.

jude79:
If u want to go into aquaponics then be ready to fund it (1) u have to spend money on energy (2) u need to have testing equipment for pH testing, dissolve oxygen testing, ammonia nitrite and nitrate testing, u also have to supplément déficient nutrient not available in ur fish feed and last but not d least Know ur chemistry.

There is so much to key into when it comes to processing. There is a lady who l admire her mindset, she owns a business called Sweet n dried, she solar dry fruits and vegetables. She has as part of her products ripe banana flakes. ripe mango flakes, pumpkin flour. She also has dried cabbage, capiscum, carrots etc. She does her drying within greenhouse structures while what is being dehydrated retains it nutrients. l intend visiting her production centre in the coming months.
Agriculture › Creating Our Own Supply Chain Vegetable Mega Store by Newway2(op):
OUR OWN SUPPLY CHAIN VEGETABLE MEGA STORE
I blv the time is ripe for a "Farm-Gate" vegetable maga store (in our major cities) in Nigeria where every registered vegetable farmer cld supply or sell or offload their vegetables straight from the farm to the shelves. Must we always wait for foreigners (Shoprite & co) to think & do things for us? Why not let's create our own vegetable supply chain like "Zucinni" shown by Oga @pavore9 in the pix?

If we do this, lots of young & educated farmers will be encouraged to do farming because the market is there & they can get premium price for their fresh vegetables.

THINGS TO CONSIDER
1) All registered farmer's farm must be certified to be organic (as much as possible).
2) There will be an agreed standard or fixed price for each farm produce or item supplied to the store.
3) Create s standard selling price for each vegetable. I blv @pavore9 cld help us here
3) it cld be formed as a cooperative or a limited liability company or we can get an investor to just build solley for groceries.

If Shoprite is doing it & making profit, then we can equally do it. Afterall Globacom showed us that Nigerians too cld run a succesfull telecomms company.

Let all known vegetable farmers on Nairaland think abt this as doable in 2016.

HAPPY NEW YEAR IN ADVANCE.

Over to all known gurus in the house.

This preservation method might be suitable for small quantity of vegetable farm produce for small holden farmers. But it's usless for a farmer with 1 acre/hecter of vegetable to sell or preserve . The OLD way of packing these vegetable in sacks shld be done away with as it encourages spoilage because d bags cld not be staked without the vegetable pressing itself.
What we need are modern way of packing & staking so that transporting them will be easier & probably cheaper. Also agriprenures cld form an association market where these vegetable cld be sold at farm-gate prices.

baba11:
My fear is preservation... ain't going to go bad in some days' time after harvest?

Something like this constructed under a tree or shade to serve as a local refrigerator unit for rural areas without access to electricity as it only needs water to maintain a cool temperature inside, have the cucumbers packed in the plastic crates and placed inside it and it would extend its freshness for over a week after harvest.

Yes very bountiful harvest indeed. Oga @Jasper7, I blv with this bountiful harvest, Jireh1 shld hv been dictating how to sell. I blv selling our farm harvest in bags shld be discountinued with. Let's come up & sell in standard crates that will show that Agric is becoming refined & better. If ALL new young farmerprenurs embrace the new selling crates, market pple will have no choice than to accept it. Let come up with (we can adopt & adapt) selling crates for our farm produce. Oga @pavore9 cld help us by sending pix of standard selling crates being used in Kenya.

You had better strike a symbiotic deal with the fish farm to use the waste water such that the waste will water & fertilise your vegetable farm. If you can do that, you don't need to worry your head abt water & most importantly, manure/ferlizer as the waste has all the nutrients your vegetable farm will EVER need.

The challenge here is how to set up such farm in a small space with minimal cost such that it will be attractive enough to many people. & as I used to say our gurus @soft777 & @pavore9 will guide us.

Enjoy the holiday.
