RomanceRe: [poll] Would You Prefer to Marry a Virgin? by nferyn(m): 2:43pm On Jan 30, 2006
In the fifties, people used to suffer in silence
People in our times are no more or less moral than people of the past. I always hear the old people say: but in our time.... You can take these remarks with a few truckloads of salt

Anyway, there is nothing particularly good (or bad) about virginity.

You're all short on cash, apparently. Who would join in the monthly 'Save Nairaland From Premature Death' contribution scheme (need a catchy phrasing to lure contributers)?

I strongly believe virginity is a pride but most youth's take it for granted i wouldnt know why.Back in the fifties the urge for sex wasnt as much as this and most marriages then were sucessful,so watsthe noise all about.
Do you define successful as people not divercing because of the ostracism of society?
Or do you mean people not divercing because the woman, on top of the beatings she received from her husband, would also become the shame of the family, left to fend for herself and her children, using the only assets she has left?

If all of us who can afford it offer something like €5 or 5$ a month, Nairaland would quickly have a hosting space that:
- offers proper customer service
- have a mirror on another location (maybe the current one grin )
- be a little more responsive (too many timouts)
Nairaland GeneralRe: Nairaland Was Offline Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Now We're Back! by nferyn(m): 12:46pm On Jan 30, 2006
The forum definitely needs to have a backup mirror somewhere.
I offer to help in supporting the financing thereof at 5€/ month. Who joins in the effort?

I agree with you, Icon. I would love nothing better than not to have to spend time moving posts around. But I have not really found these people yet. I haven't really find people who satisfy all the qualities I want in a moderator.
Maybe you have unrealistic expectations. The biggest ennemy of excellent is perfect

i am very serious, i don't know why he asked that. cheesy no it wasnt a bad dream, although i felt like i was having a bad dream, when he asked such a question
So someone that teaches students at university level, a professor, thinks (I need to find another word, thinking is way too generous for such a degenerate specimen of the species Homo Sapiens) that Africa is a country.
We should build a wall around that country, it's way too dangerous to let them loose on the wide world undecided undecided undecided
(sorry for the rant, but I can hardly believe this, this is taking brainwashing to a whole new level)
Nairaland GeneralRe: Is Nairaland A Clique? by nferyn(m): 10:18am On Jan 27, 2006
That probably depends on those people's attitudes. It is quite normal that you interact more with people that share your interests.

Usability Enhancements by Nferyn: What usability enhancements do you think we need?
Actually, Usability is one of my expertises. I have conducted usability tests, walkthroughs and done extensive research in Interaction Design methodologies when I was in web development (already more than 4 years ago, how time flies wink )

I don't think a formal test is what is needed. The forum already adheres to most guidelines and the results won't give you dramatic improvements, unless you've got cash to spare for a complete overhaul. One of the main drivers for Google's succes was engaging Jacob Nielsen in their advisory board and strictly following a usability driven desing cycle.

I will do a walkthrough and list some quick fixes. It won't happen overnight though, because this would mean a few hours of concentrated effort;

Seun:
So, nferyn, Terry's Schiavo's case was not euthanasia? huh
It was, according to the English definition. It's not entirely certain according to the Dutch definition. As she, although not in an explicit will, made it quite clear that she did not want to continue living in a vegetative state.
HealthRe: Do You Support Euthanasia? by nferyn(m): 9:32am On Jan 27, 2006
IAH:
Wrong there. I guess you are forming your own definition for it. Euthanasia is simply "assisted or mercy killing". It does not involve who requested it.
I was assuming that the definiton in Dutch (my mother tongue) and English was the same. It seems that the definition of euthansia differs between Dutch and English.

From the Dutch Van Dale dictionary (most authoritative dictionary in the Dutch Language area):
eu·tha·na·sie (de ~ (v.))
1 het op hun eigen verzoek bewust doen eindigen van het leven
van patiënten die ondraaglijk en uitzichtloos lijden => levensbeëindiging
http://www.vandale.be/opzoeken/woordenboek/?zoekwoord=euthanasie
Translation: The conscious ending of the life of patients that are undergoing and unbearable and inescapable suffering at their own request

So indeed, I may have gotten it wrong in English, as the Oxford English Dictionary defines euthanasia as:

/yoothnayzi/
• noun the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable disease or in an irreversible coma.

one of my proffessor once questioned if africa was a continent or a country. the worst thing is that you try to correct them, but i guess ignorance is bliss.
You must be joking. This is surreal. Are you sure you weren't having a bad dream? undecided wink
HealthRe: Do You Support Euthanasia? by nferyn(m): 10:03pm On Jan 26, 2006
We should get our terminology straight. Euthanasia is euthanasia only when the ending of the persons life is done on his or her own request.

You are right about that. However we have to be careful not to lay the same premises for both normal and paranormal experiments. Events that are not solely within our jurisdiction (i repeat) cannot be repeated (by us). It can only repeat itself by itself.

That said, I don't see how chance can make a cripple walk instantly. I have however witnessed this times without number.
If you see a cripple walk, you can say that this is a possible, although very unlike thing to happen. If a preacher can make make several cripples walk, than there needs to be something more behind it (of course if this happens under proper controlled conditions)

The Randi Challenge does not talk about God, only about an even that cannot be naturally explained

I find it quite amazing that, even though the US has a very diverse population, the level of ignorance on anything outside the US is staggering, even among educated Americans.

No wonder US foreign policy is so messed up.
