UNSPOKEN.
I taught her everything she knows. I led her by the hand and protected her from woes. She is my kid sister and her name is Ndidi. We are just two years apart so she was the thorn on my flesh and the smile on my lips. We were inseparable. Two of a kind.
I guided her through secondary school and protected her from bullies, I still was there for her through our University days . I was there to glue the broken pieces of her heart when jidenna torn the veil of her innocence. I was body shield, protecting her from pits else she breaks her spine.
The bond of sisterhood is the strongest bond of all. The love between sisters is the purest love of all. And that's why, all I felt was undiluted joy when Ndidi informed me that Donald had proposed.
I wanted my sister to have the best and Donald was the definition of true masculinity, he is a bundle of compassion, a gentleman of breeding and a successful entrepreneur.
Our mother was proud, "Ndidi, nwa m, you caught a big fish", mum would say, grinning from Chin to chin.
The introduction had barely occurred when my boat began to rock. I did not understand that I had disrupted an agelong tradition of sisterhood. I didn't know that I had broken the unspoken code of culture.
It was exactly two weeks to Ndidi's wedding, I had already outdone myself, helping run around for the logistics and preparation,Ndidi had asked me to be her chief bride's maid, when mum and her two friends, mummy uju and aunty Gertrude called me into mama's bedroom. I had sat in their midst, wondering what I had done to warrant this sermon and watchful stares.
It was mummy uju that broke the ice, the plump woman with hawk like eyes. "Adaora , I wekwara ifere? Do you not have shame?",
The question ran in rhetorics while I was sinking in confusion.
"Do you not have brains, aunty Gertrude asked.
" what have I done wrong, aunt, I asked,i was watching them intently, my mother was silent, her face downcast, as she raised it and stared at me squarely in the eyes
How old are you, Adaora? My mother asked.
"25,mum", i said reluctantly, for I knew that she knows the day she had borne me.
"How old is Ndidi? ",
" Ndidi is 23", i replied.
"Ndidi is 23,your younger sister and she is getting married and you are happily parading yourself as her chief bridesmaid", Aunty Gertrude said gauntly.
Oh I see, this is where this is going? I thought.
''Ibu nna GA alu eh, Adaora? You have been trained through school, one is to expect that you are of both sound intellect and good reasoning yet...
Children of these days lack ako na uche, no thinking faculty at all. Adaora, I got married at the age of 18, and before I was 23,i had already given birth to you and your sister. Kedu ife I na eche? What are you waiting for? ", mother said
My ears were throbbing, my eyes were hurting, their words were daggers piercing my soul.
Oh I am now a failure, a disappointment. I am shameless for celebrating with Ndidi. Life isn't a race, I thought, but the more I thought that the more the battle raged in my heart, Ndidi was doing better than me, things began to stare at my face, she has always been prettier than me, boys had always desired her more, as these unholy thoughts roams free in my mind, the seed they had sown began to bloom against the resistance of my will, against my purest intention, against the love I have for Ndidi.
My life is miserable, if truth be said, I thought. I am dating a guy who is still looking for job, four years after school, I am the one who usually gives him money and encourages him to stand firm. Isn't that what love is about, support, commitment loyalty?
Why then does mum give Ndidi's suitor the warmest treatment but gives a cold shoulder to my man. All the clues I had missed came staring at my face, like the missing point in a map connecting, like a puzzle revealing itself , I felt nauseating.
I hated aunty Gertrude, I hated mama uju, I hated mother. I felt dumb and clueless for not seeing all these pointers.
Am lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling, fighting hard to hold the tears back, Ndidi bounces in, in her usual boisterous manner..
"Adaora ! ", she called" look, what my baby sent me",
Parading in my face a bunch of beautiful roses.
"Get out, I said, my voice cracking like a dry fig burning in harmattan. Ndidi was shocked.. "Ada what's wrong?",.
Her face concerned, her eyes shining in love.
This is my sister, I thought. But as I look at her my heart hardened. In her, I see an enemy. A vampire sucking my joy. The seed that mother had planted, had become a tree.

African Cobwebs

Cobwebs are tiny intricate lines of thread, interconnected to form a work of art woven by the spider suspended in the prism Of edges, that was my definition of cobweb until 2nd of August 2016.
I was in Michael's studio at Bariga, a jolly good fellow enters,
"Hey!" He said, "where is Michael?",.
''Michael just stepped out, he will return soon",. I replied, my eyes glued to my writing, I was having one of them days, poetic inspiration was hitting me from every corner and my ink was flowing faster.
Then, the fellow picks my book and starts prying into it,
"Drop it", I thought, "that is my privacy,a platform for freedom, to express my amateurism without criticism.
" Hmm" he said after reading my poem aloud..
"I don't like spoken word poems, he said with an air of authority, "I prefer core poetry",.
''I will get to that level', I replied with angry defiance.
He was getting ready to go, his right foot twitching as he turns to me,
" Tell Michael that I couldn't waaai...",he paused suddenly, his eyes fixed at the left corner of the Celine, he was staring with mouth agape.
"get me a Broom!, he bellowed.
I ran into the store in a maddened haste and picked the broom, he must have seen a snake.. I thought, fear gripping me.
"Here the Broom", I said, breathing laboriously.
He took it, and began to remove a cobweb hanging on the celine.
"Evil, evil!!!'' he muttered under his breath.
"How is cobweb evil?", I asked..
"This can hinder someone's progress. It is evil. I hate it. ", he answered.
I listened in silence . I could feel the level of anger he felt.
"This is how they killed my father', He continued.
"Watch what you give power over you',. I said to him. And that my statement ushered us into a twenty minutes argument that led us nowhere.

Two weeks later, I arrived at my village for grandpa's burial, we haven't been to the village for months now. The entire house has become a haven of cobwebs.
Before, I began to clean, I watched my dad closer, waiting for him to comment or react to the cobwebs but he felt indifferent about the cobwebs walking through it undisturbed.

Three minutes into my cleaning, I heard a loud scream outside, I ran out in haste, splashing my bucket of water.
In the left corner of our compound, just by the gate, I saw my uncles and my dad bent over something. All I was hearing was "blood of Jesus, holy ghost fire! ".
I ran towards them, my heart pumping in my chest. What could be wrong, I wondered.
I got to them and peered over their shoulders, all I could see was dog poo.

"How can someone come in my compound and excrete? This is no ordinary." That was my dad's voice laced with anger.
"Bad people everywhere", uncle Eddie echoed.
"This is poison. Bring olive oil. Bring Bible" Uncle John said.
Chioma! Chioma, bring petrol and matches.. My dad bellowed. He was sweating like a ram that's led to the slaughter house.
"Daddy, this is dog poo, for God sake, I said.
And at my observation, my uncles and my dad began to roam around the compound like forensic investigators looking for dog foot prints.
"Bia nu, I have seen it', uncle Eddie shouts. They all ran there looking at the dog's foot tracks, joy and relief written all over their faces. Their fear diffused.

We all have our own versions of African cobwebs, one man's food is another's poison.
Africans and their belief system have formed a major foundation in their lives. ... However, we must believe that He that is in you is greater that whatever kind of cobweb. It is your belief that matters, if you believe more in the potency of your cobwebs then it may become effective. As a man thinketh, so is he. Believe firmly in your God's protective capacity and fear thou not of any kind of cobwebs.. Shikena.

Chioma.
Religion / The Necessity Of Gratitude by ngaz(f): 10:28am On Aug 12, 2016
The Necessity of Gratitude .

Yesterday, I was strolling to the bank. I was feeling pretty excited, I walked past a teenage hausa boy with his little store placed on his head. I saw him staring at the kunu, and frau de nunu drink, that another hausa girl was selling at the corner.
I watched him approach her as he asks for the prices, he looked tired, sun burnt . weary. I was moved by compassion for him.
"kunu, pipty naira, nunu, hundred naira", I heard the seller say.
The teenage boy paused, lost in thoughts, I saw him salivating, wiping sweats from his brows.
He kept looking at nunu when he ordered for kunu.
I was touched, I wondered if all his day's profit will be up to 400naira. I wanted him to drink what he really wanted and I didn't want him to spend his little money.
So, the good Samaritan me, opened my purse and brought out 100 naira and gave the boy, the seller began to stare at me in surprise,i smiled inwardly, struggling to keep a humble countenance but inside, I was bubbling in joy, "I was helping the needy for God's sake",.
"you can buy what you want ", I said to the boy as I went off on my way.
Feeling like a fairy mother with the magic wand.
If he understood me, he didn't show it, he silently took the money and began to buy his drink. He didn't smile , didn't laugh, didn't thank.
I was few steps away when I turned back again to see the boy still buying as though nothing had happened.
I felt a slightly hurt or maybe Deeply Hurt lol. I had expected appreciation. I had expected him to shed a tear or two. I had expected him to scream his joy.
I had expected all this for a very little token of 100NAIRA gift.
So imagine how God must feel when we do not appreciate him for oxygen, for life, for daily bread, for safety and peace.
We walk around with our heads held high, like it is our rights. It is a privilege not a right. It is the creator's love and limitless mercies.
So this incident really got me thinking of my own hypocrisy and tall expectations even when I know I really do not appreciate God for bigger blessing.
So through this little incident, I learnt anew in practical terms the Necessity of gratitude to God . Lol.

With love,
Chioma.

Everything thing good will come

#memories I just remembered the blackberry frenzy. The desperation to own the BB, If you had it, you were the biggest thing on campus. And so many did the unmentionables just to own the phone. i was mocked by my friends for not owning one, that by the time, I had saved up for it, it was almost out of trend, yet, I was still super excited with the thrill of owning a bb, that I forgot to remove my atm card after withdrawing the money in my haste to make the purchase.. Lol.
Trend will come, trend will go. Remember when Mercedes 230 and Peugeot 504 was on point, Alot of men may have used their mama for blood money, just for a fleeting desire.
Do not be overly bothered with what you have and what you have not, be more concerned about the content of your character.. Have you developed your mental capacity or have you been only interested in your classy clothes, wristwatch and gadgets
Invest in things that can never lose value and at the long run will bring you wealth. Ifeoma adi agwu agwu.. Good things never finish. Better things go come! Especially when you are flowing with the flow of heavenly grace.
#patience...
#invest in you...
#lines will fall into pleasant places

MEMORY
BY CHIOMA NGAIKEDI.

Fleeting, bruising, enlightening
These images sparkles like the starlight
Sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter
Like a flute that plays in tones of deeds long done.

The sacrilege of taboo broken
The agony of principles crushed
The joy of ghostly memories
Hunts my tender days.

I walk between two worlds
Of calm and chaos
Like a boat upon a turbulent sea
My soul wanders
My mind leaps into freedom
Violating the boundaries of of chain.

llaykorn:
This is a very beautiful poem, ngaz. You just made me see these resolutions in a completely different way.

'You will conquer your goals
If your focus can burn your fears'.

These lines are a beautiful quote.

This looks like the most beautiful stanza from your poem. You missed a word in the fourth line, though.

The sweetness of the honeycomb dares my spirit,
The vigour of the swarming bees scares my soul,
But for the taste of honey,
The must Forge forward,
Defiling the stings of the bees,
And claiming the prize.
The intensity of focus breaks barriers

Thanks for sharing this, ngaz.
thanks dear for the comment, this is the first comment on my poem outside the usual applause of my family. Wink. Thanks, really.
Poems For Review / New Year by ngaz(f): 9:18am On Jan 01, 2016
Never has a day been celebrated like this,
The birth of a new day,
The expectations of a new hope,
The world roars in joy,
The applause shakes its pillars.

The new year comes with new dreams,
The ladder is set and all seek to climb,
Resolutions are made,
The heart of men is beating
Like a drum by eager hands of a drunk.

The mystic mist is in the air,
The season's bug is flying about,
Enticing followers to the temple's abode,
Goals are set,
Goals will be broken.
The race has begun,
The weak will fall off the race.

This is a battle of warriors,
With resolution craved on the rock,
Passion fuels by determination,
Courage subdued the fear of uncertainty,
Setting a stage for heros to dine.

The sweetness of the honeycomb dares my spirit,
The vigour of the swarming bees scares my soul,
But for the taste of honey,
The warrior must Forge forward,
Defiling the stings of the bees,
And claiming the prize.

The intensity of focus breaks barriers,
Men have conquered the sea,
Men have broken the wind,
Men have dominated the land,
You will conquer your goals
If your focus can burn your fears.

2016 will begin with a new song,
You will behold the glory of your visions,
Passion and determination will oil your engine,
The joys of conquering will burn in your heart,
2016 will end with your prize in your palms.

God help Nigeria, just finished watching a documentary by Jide olarenwaju on history of Nigeria, the civil war,the political greed, nepotism, corruption, children that died of hunger, the suffering the bloodshed, the agony and pain,I personally lost an uncle to the war,I don't know whom you lost,or how your parents hurt,we all bled even before we were born, cos when two elephants fight, the grasses suffer.now the dirty politicking that rid the nation decades ago is manifesting again, just as a newlyborn grows bigger as the day goes by,so the evil that dirty politicking perpetrates keeps increasing in strides as the days go by,poor Nigerians suffer, you and me,victims of the bomb blasts, the chibok girls, imagine their fate, after 80days,the fear, agony, the virgins amongst them are likely to return deflowered, and their hearts will be scarred as well as their womanhood, and what do we do,me and you,we try to create fun at ist lady grammar,we try to apportion blame on GEJ,we try to do anything that will not hold us accountable, with our silence and nonchalancy,we let things flow by,when we can do more, yes in our helplessness,we are strong,we r strong cos of our number and singleminded desire for peace,we are strong if we can quit the laughter and be the change we aspire to see in our nation, that little effort you put in counts volumes,if only we can see what our fathers saw during the war,if only we can all coexist with oNe voice without aNy tribal barrier,if only we can put aside greed, nepotism and quest for power,if we can see govt as a call for service and not to be hailed as an oga at the top.we all, individually, make up this nation,we are the tribes and religion segregation,we all lament about.the president is only but one person,u and me are the masses,we need to let this revolutionary change our dear founding fathers so desperately fought for, though them left us a banner soiled with war and scars,we the youths could and will correct the order of chaos, segregation trending,we can set the landscale and our leaders and fathers will follow.so lend the helping hand to your neigbour,be shoulder he can lean on regardless of the tribe nor religion, project the image of a new Nigeria,a better one, restore our glory as the gaints of Africa, lets radiate this goodness, peace and love cos evil prevail when good people fail to act.so be visible in your campaign for a better peaceful Nigeria,be fearless,be a symbol of love for love conquers all,cos in a dark room, a lit candle always illuminates,so imagine a Nigeria where you and I are shinning forth.in the north, south east and west, lit candles shining, this will override any darkness in our way,so you see, the problem is actually with you and me and not those pple we are blaming.let's strive to leave for our children a better banner, a banner of love and integrity.it all starts with you and me.thank you.
