Science/Technology / Hackathonafrica Kicks Off In Enugu With 20 Graudates In First Cohort by Nigeria2day(m): 10:48pm On Sep 05, 2022
The inaugural edition of HackathonAfrica kicked off on Thursday, September 01, 2022, in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.

The HackatonAfrica program, a brainchild of the US-based AfricaPlan Foundation, is an intensive software coding boot camp for fresh graduates aimed at tackling the steep digital skills deficit in the Southeast region and creating opportunities for the enterprising youth to tap into the burgeoning technology industry.

With Nigeria’s unemployment rate at more than 35%, the AfricanPlan Foundation said the HackathonaAfrica provides one of several unique opportunities that must be explored to creatively tackle the unemployment crisis through an inclusive and strategic digital upskilling program that creates opportunities for the next generation of young Nigerians to play an active part in the digital economy.

The Hackathon attracted massive interest from youths across the region with over 300 applications received. However, only twenty recent graduates were shortlisted to join the first cohort, which included ten males and ten females, underscoring the Foundation’s strategic commitment to inclusivity and removing biases by granting equal opportunities to both genders.

Politics / Buhari’s War On Corruption Comes To A Successful End by Nigeria2day(m): 9:36am On Aug 10, 2022
The Presidential pardon granted to former Governors Joshua Dariye of Plateau State and Rev. Jolly Nyame of Taraba State, and their subsequent release from jail this week brings to a successful and glorious end President Muhammadu Buhari’s bitter war on corruption.

The war, as expected, consumed many political gladiators and established many unscrupulous fellows who sniffed their way into the corridors of power.

The Nigerian people will not forget Buhari for ridding the country of corrupt practices and individuals. To be very honest, history would surely be kind to him for making sure that the country did not lose 30% of its GDP to corruption as projected before he came into office.

Nairaland / General / Dariye, Nyame Freed From Jail; Kizz Daniel Arrested In Dar Es Salaam… by Nigeria2day(m): 9:01am On Aug 09, 2022
Two former governors convicted of widespread corruption while in government, including theft of over 3 billion naira collectively were released from jail on Monday after serving only a fraction of their time. Jolly Nyame – a former Taraba Governor was meant to serve a 14-year jail term from 2018 for allegedly diverting N1.64 billion in May 2007, while Joshua Dariye, a former governor of Plateau State was convicted for looting over N2 billion when he served as Plateau Governor between 1999 and 2007.

President Muhammed Buhari, who had a well-regarded anti-corruption reputation, pardoned the two men in April this year.

Mr. Dariye looked nothing like a man who endured the inconvenience of jail time. He looked well kept, plump, adorned in a clean white native attire, and posed for the camera with broad smiles from his luxury SUV when he departed the correctional centre on Monday afternoon.

Politics / Why It Is Near Impossible To Impeach Peter Obi Even With Parliamentary Minority by Nigeria2day(m): 12:16pm On Aug 08, 2022
As the 2023 Nigerian general elections draw nearer, various political actors, especially those in the minority or opposition party are warming up to wrestle powers away from the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC especially at the federal level while the ruling party itself and its candidates are not resting on their oars to retain power beyond the current dispensation.

Of all available elective positions, only the office of the Nigerian President is the focus of this article; and it seeks to x-ray the fate of a Nigerian President when it comes to his being removed from office for a grave violation of the constitution and/or for an act(s) of gross misconduct by the National Assembly; especially where his political party at the point of his election, occupies the minority seats at the National Assembly.

Amongst other things, this article is coming against the backdrop of some media postulations that even if Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party clinches the office of the Nigeria President come 2023 presidential election, his removal from office by the National Assembly would be easy given that it is difficult to see his party, the Labour Party clinching the majority seats at the National Assembly come 2023.

Business / Nigeria’s Empty Cookie Jar: Africa’s Largest Economy Faces Its Worst Revenue Cri by Nigeria2day(m): 3:54pm On Jul 27, 2022
Nigeria may not be broke yet, but it is well on its way. Africa’s largest economy has a worrisome revenue crisis that has compounded budget deficits, hampering its ability to support expenditure and debt servicing.

On July 21, Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed said debt servicing, for the first time, surpassed revenue between January and April – a clear signal of the government’s gross revenue shortfall, amid growing debt stock, which currently stands at N41.60 trillion, about $100.07 billion.

The government insists the debts are relatively low, compared to the GDP. Pundits believe otherwise. The International Monetary Fund, IMF has repeatedly warned that despite the low debt to GDP ratio, the revenue challenges make debt servicing unsustainable.

Only last month, the Fund warned that debt servicing might take all of Nigeria’s revenue by 2026. The chicken may have come home to roost, much earlier than expected.

Nigeria’s former Deputy Senator President, Ike Ekweremadu may be staring at a maximum of 10 years in the UK prison, should he be convicted of child trafficking offences.

Politics / 4 Mistakes Osinbajo Supporters Are Making by Nigeria2day(m): 10:26am On May 26, 2022
1. This election is not Osinbajo VS Tinubu

The supporters of Prof Yemi Osinbajo need to understand that the APC primary is going to be him contesting against about 20 other aspirants from different states, and not just APC leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

I feel it is some sort of disservice to an intelligent man like PYO wanting to lead Nigeria when all his supporters focus on is what the supporters of Bola Ahmed Tinubu have said, could have said or are going to say about him.

It feels like reducing the man to a regional politician who wants to be governor of Lagos state or one of the southwest states and is seeking attention from the Jagaban.

Whether or not they admit it, it smirks of fear or inferiority complex or a guilty conscience. While none of this might be the situation, the general electorates might not care once the perception is fully developed in their minds.

If Osinbajo gets his party’s ticket for the presidential election, the general election is going to be tougher, the campaigns being fiercer and the earlier they focus on the man himself, the better for them and his ambition.

Politics / Tinubu Woos Oyo APC To Support Senator Akanbi by Nigeria2day(m): 10:08am On May 26, 2022
The build-up to the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in Oyo state is getting more intriguing, as different interest groups continue to scheme underground for their preferred candidates for different offices.

The race for the Oyo South senatorial ticket seems to be the most contested, although, it looks likely to be a one-horse race as rumour has it that APC leader and presidential aspirant, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been reaching out to party bigwigs in Oyo state to support his preferred candidate, Senator Rilwan Adesoji Akanbi.

This is not unexpected as Akanbi has been at the forefront of the South West Agenda (SWAGA) a political vehicle that has vigorously sold the Tinubu presidency across Yoruba states.

Tinubu is also believed to have argued that Senator Akanbi’s experience as a senator from 2015 to 2019 and his superior national influence is an asset to the party and the state, especially as the party would be facing a ruling PDP that is desperate to win all the seats in the state.

Religion / Before Cardinal Arịnze Turns 90 by Nigeria2day(m): 10:22am On Apr 15, 2022
By November 1, 2022 (this year), FRANCIS ANỊZỌBA ARỊNZE would be exactly 90 years old having been born on November 1, 1932.

Arịnze—the son of Arịnze Nwankwụ—is from (Ọdịda) Ụmụikwele village in Eziowele, a town in Idemmili LGA of the present-day Anambra State. At 90, Francis Arịnze has outlived the indigenous pioneer leaders and icons of Ìgbò Catholicism with whom he built the behemoth of what is today the Catholic enterprise among the Ìgbò (both within Ìgbòland and outside of it).

Having lived this long as an important historical reference, Arịnze’s life—(for anyone who values understanding the Christianization journey of the Ìgbò)—is a deeply consequential one.

Not many Ìgbò people know that Francis Arịnze was once famously known throughout the world as “the youngest archbishop in Africa” (arguably beyond the Catholic Christendom). Arịnze became a bishop a few months before he turned 33 in 1965. And, at 34, just about five months before his 35th birthday in 1967, he has pronounced an archbishop—actually the Archbishop of Ọnịcha and the Metropolitan of all of its ecclesiastical province. By being “Metropolitan of Ọnịcha Ecclesiastical Province” at the time, the whole of the Catholic empire in Ìgbòland (except that of the West Niger Ìgbò) came under Arịnze’s leadership and direction. He was only 34 going to 35!
