Politics / Apga’s Ejiogu Becomes First Politician To Visit Obube Ancient Kingdom by Nigeria2day(m): 9:05am On Oct 06, 2023
Sir Tony Ejiogu, the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA has become the first politician of Imo extraction to visit and pay homage to Obube Ancient Kingdom, the historic community where Imo State’s creation was first decided in 1976 and Owerri declared the capital.

Despite its strategic and historic significance, the community has suffered gross neglect by the government, evidenced by the lack of any meaningful public infrastructure in the entire community.

During the visit, Ejiogu paid homage to the palace of the late king who played a crucial role in securing the creation of the Imo State and visited the historic site of the meeting where the creation of the State was agreed upon in 1976.

Ejiogu was welcomed to the community by a massive crowd and community leaders from the area including Chief Samuel Akujiuobi and Chief Ernest Onukogu, who extolled Sir Tony Ejiogu for paying homage to their late King and recognizing his role in the creation of the state.

Travel / A Ban On Nigerian Passports By Seychelles Won’t Hurt Nigerians Alone by Nigeria2day(m): 1:09pm On Jul 09, 2023
On the evening of July 9, 2023, a travel content creator, @munafromtravelletters, raised the alarm over a ban on Nigerian passports by Seychelles as he received a rejection email from the immigration office of Seychelles, declaring that Nigerian passports are no longer being considered for entry into the country.

“We regret to inform you that your application has been denied, as per immigration regulation, for now, we are not accepting any NIGERIAN passport holders for holiday purposes,” a screenshot of the email message from the travel promoter read.

This move by the Seychelles government has significant implications for both nations. The ban on Nigerian passports by Seychelles is likely to strain the bilateral relations between the two countries. It signals a lack of trust and cooperation, potentially leading to diplomatic tensions.

Programming / Why Threads App Poses Real Threat To Musk’s Twitter by Nigeria2day(m): 12:22pm On Jul 09, 2023
Successfully launching a new social media platform, such as the Threads app, is unarguably one of the most notoriously difficult things to attempt.

After Facebook successfully upturned existing platforms in 2004, only a handful have successfully risen to challenge its dominance. One such platform is Twitter, which has risen to become a formidable force in the social media space over the past decade.

However, the launch of the Threads app by Meta’s Instagram last week signals the end of Twitter’s dominance. Compared to Trump-backed Truth Social, Mastodon, and Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky, which were launched within the past five years, the Threads app is arguably the only one that poses a real threat to Twitter’s dominance.

Business / EXPLAINED: How The Naira Devaluation Will Affect You by Nigeria2day(m): 11:24am On Jun 18, 2023
The Naira was devalued on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, when the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN lifted the cap on foreign exchange trade and allowed Banks and traders at the Investors and Exporters window to trade freely at market-determined rates.

This ends years of intervention in the Nigerian foreign exchange market that has seen the country fritter away billions of dollars in the defense of the local currency.

This development comes days after the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele was suspended and arrested over allegations of graft while in office.

The move is also part of the promise by the new President Bola Tinubu to liberalize the market and provide opportunities to boost liquidity.

While this is a good development to correct the prevailing market distortions, the decision to float the Naira can have significant implications for spending habits within the country.

When Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe was appointed the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the retail lender, Fidelity Bank Plc in July 2020, she spoke plainly about the Bank’s ambition to attain a tier-1 status by 2025.

Two and a half years down the lane, the Bank has taken several bold steps that put it well on course to joining the Tier-1 league.

Tier-1 status refers to a bank's capital adequacy ratio and signifies its financial strength and ability to absorb losses. Achieving tier-1 status is a significant milestone for a bank as it demonstrates stability, credibility, and the ability to support the economy.

Right now, only five commercial banks in Nigeria are classified as tier-1. These include First Bank, UBA, GTB, Access Bank, and Zenith Bank. Fidelity Bank has set its sights on joining the league. Will they make the cut?

Politics / Obi: Nigeria Braces For Stunning Political Upset by Nigeria2day(m): 9:31am On Feb 21, 2023
Nigeria may be heading for the biggest political upset in its democratic history. An underestimated third-party candidate that none gave serious thought to and was written off by political pundits, is almost certain to take the day at the Presidential election on February 25.

Nearly all polls have tipped Mr. Peter Obi of a fringe, little-known Labour Party as the likely winner. In two separate surveys conducted for Bloomberg News by Premise Data Corp, Mr. Obi maintained a healthy lead against rival candidates of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr. Bola Tinubu, and the main opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP candidate, Atiku Abubakar. In similar surveys by other respected pollsters – NOI polls, Nextier, Stears, and SBM Intelligence, more than a tenth of potential voters indicated their preference for Obi over the established parties’ candidates.

Nairaland / General / 6 Things You Need To Know Before Returning Your Old Naira Notes To CBN by Nigeria2day(m): 11:04pm On Feb 14, 2023
6 things you need to know before returning your old naira notes to CBN

The old denominations of N200, N500, and N1,000 notes ceased to be legal tender on February 10, 2023, but if you are still in possession of them, below is what you must know about the process of returning them to the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

1. You Cannot New Naira Notes In Exchange for the Old Notes

According to the CBN guideline, the process of returning the old naira notes is under a Cash Deposit programme and not a cash swap programme.

Therefore, you will not be issued new notes in exchange for old notes. Instead, your bank account will be credited after your account is validated by law enforcement.

Also, note that this process could take up to 4 weeks.

2. Getting Credited Is Dependent on Account Validation

However, to be credited electronically with the equivalent of deposited old notes, you need to validate that the account is yours. If the validation of the account turns out negative, the bank will return the deposited notes.

Read the rest of the guidelines here>>> https://nigeriatodaynews.com/6-things-you-need-to-know-before-returning-your-old-naira-notes-to-cbn/
