Politics / 5 Important Takeaways From Buhari’s Independence Day Speech by Nigeria2day(m): 3:59pm On Oct 01, 2019
So, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday addressed Nigerians on its 59 Independence Day.

His speech centred on the progress his administration made on security, governance and economy.

Here are at least 5 most important takeaways from the President’s address.

1. Boko Haram has been defeated: The president said in his speech that the cut-throat terror group, Boko Hara, and its allies Islamic State have been defeated. He appreciated the members of the armed forces and other security officers for their role in the feat while pledging more commitment and investment on combatting insecurity in the country.

“In the last four years, we have combatted the terrorist scourge of Boko Haram. We owe a debt of gratitude to our gallant men and women in arms, through whose efforts we have been able to achieve the present results. We are also grateful to our neighbours and allies – within the region and across the world – who have supported us on this front.

“The capacity of our armed forces to defend our territorial integrity continues to be enhanced by the acquisition of military hardware as well as continued improvements in the working conditions of our servicemen and women,” Buhari said.

Nairaland / General / Lagos Has Less Than 700,000 Taxpayers - Sanwo-olu by Nigeria2day(m): 3:31pm On Oct 01, 2019
Nigeria's commercial nerve centre, Lagos has less than 700 active taxpayers, said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Sanwo-Olu stated this while speaking at The Platform, an annual economic summit organised by the Christian Covenant Centre, Lagos.

While answering a question on multiple taxations in the state and what the government is doing about it, Sanwo-Olu said the state is getting little from tax, adding that while he would not canvass for an increase in the tax rate, he wants many more Lagosians to be brought to the tax net.

According to him, the state has less than 700 active taxpayers and only about 110 taxpayers pay up to 10 million naira and above as tax in the state.

Nairaland / General / Lagos To Commence Regulation Of Gokada, Oride, Other Motorcycle Taxis by Nigeria2day(m): 2:44pm On Oct 01, 2019
The Lagos state government will soon commence the regulation of motorcycle taxis, also known as Okada taxis.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known on Tuesday while speaking at The Platform, an annual economic summit organised by the Covenant Christian Centre.

While answering a question on what his government is doing about the infamous Lagos traffic on the short to medium term, Sanwo-Olu said the plan includes fixing some of the existing roads that are in bad shape, adding railways and expanding the waterways.

He said the plan includes bringing in the new Okada taxis mushrooming in the city under government regulation in order to effectively manage how they impact traffic congestion. He said the plan is to improve its automation and make it safer for commuters, to the extent that operators can disable motorcycle rides remotely.

Sanwo-Olu also said the government is expanding the BRT scheme as the government is in the process of clearing 800 buses from the ports to add to the BRT fleet.

Politics / SUCCEEDING BUHARI: Wait For Me On October 6 – Tunde Bakare by Nigeria2day(m): 5:58am On Sep 30, 2019
Pastor Tunde Bakare will succeed President Muhammadu Buhari as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, come 2023. Nobody can change that. He has the backing of the "holy spirit".

That’s essentially his message on Sunday, as he released a lengthy statement denying some of the things attributed to him on Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s perceived ordeals in the hands of an alleged cabal, and asking Nigerians to expect his nationwide broadcast about his presidential bid on Sunday, October 6, 2019.

The Serving Overseer, Latter Rain Assembly, said he knew he would be Buhari’s successor because what he saw and said about one year, seven months ago and the situation had not changed.

He, however, denounced social media reports linking his presidential ambition to the alleged humiliation of Vice-President by “the cabal” in the Presidency.

“I heard all kinds of things on the Internet about joining the cabal. Those who pull down others to get up will never get up,” he said.

Nairaland / General / PROTECTING THE CODE: How Nigerian Software Engineers Fight Police Harrassment by Nigeria2day(m): 5:04am On Sep 30, 2019
They have shouted it from the rooftops. They have begged and cried, that software developers are not internet thieves. But the police are not willing to listen. Now, united by anger, they are finally getting ready to fight back. And it will likely be bloody.

Already armed with codes, they are now adding millions of naira to their arsenal and Nigeria police better be prepared for what is coming.

It all started on Saturday, September 28 after one of them, one Toni Astro alleged that he was harassed and extorted by some of the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS in Ogudu area of Lagos.

The emotional account elicited the expected reactions from most of the crème de la crème of the Nigerian tech industry.

One of them, Bosun Tijani, the CEO of Co-creation hub, made a rallying call to all the tech CEOs in the country to make concerted efforts to fight the menace and put an end to it once and for all.

“Tag all tech CEOs, young people, youth empowerment champions and reasonable adults on this. Both local and foreign - let us bind together to end this oppression. Drop everything and get behind this. ENOUGH!” he commented while retweeting Mr Astro’s thread.

“We all told them they can be in charge of their future. They can be fulfilled and employed. We must stand up against this. It is time to act. Please tag other tech leaders - let's stand up!” the obviously infuriated Tijani added while mentioning all the tech CEOs he could remember, including former Konga CEO, Sim Shagaya, iROKOTV’s founder/CEO, Jason Njoku, Co-founder of Andela and Flutterwave, Iyin Aboyeji, Paga CEO, Tayo Oviousm, Printivo CEO, Oluyomi Ojo, hotels.ng CEO, Mark Essien and a host of others.

And, as expected, it wasn’t long, they were on their way to raising 100 million naira. CEO of iROKOTV Jason fired the first shot, donating 10 million naira to the cause.

Politics / 36 Dead Cows: You’re A Warmonger, Arewa Youths Attack Gani Adams by Nigeria2day(m): 7:14pm On Sep 29, 2019
The Arewa Youths Movement has called the Aare Ona Kankafo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams a warmonger for asking the cattle herders in Yoruba land to vacate the region.

The group was reacting to a statement credited to Adams and published on Saturday's edition of the New Telegraph on Saturday where he allegedly demanded that cattle herders leave Yorubaland.

In a statement issued in Kano by the National Publicity Secretary of Arewa Youths Movement (AYM), Mallam Abdulrahman Mohammed, and made available to Nigeria Today on Sunday, the group "condemned the unguarded and uncouth statements credited to Chief Gani Adams".

The group said Adams is beating drums of war and called on President Muhammadu Buhari, Southwest governors, the Department of Security Service, DSS and the Inspector General of Police to protect the cattle herders, which the group said, are only going about their legitimate businesses.

The statement read in part: "Our attention has been drawn to a publication which was prominently published in the front page of Saturday, September 28th, 2019 of Telegraph Newspapers, with the headline "36 Dead Cows: 'Leave Yorubaland Now' - Gani Adams Tells Herders".

"This happened as a result of a recent tragedy in Ijare Community area of Ifedore Local Government of Ondo State where 36 cows of our people Killed by lightning, which is nothing but the wish and the will of Almighty Allah.

"In the said statement which was credited to the leader of Oodua People's Congress (OPC), Chief Gani Adams, he said: "They (the herders) should move out of the South-West immediately because they don’t have anywhere to stay in the zone. The South-West will not be convenient for them, warning that the sad occurrence is just a tip of the iceberg and a caution to herdsmen and other livestock shepherds."

Investment / 3 Reasons Price Of Bitcoin Dropped By 18% In One Day by Nigeria2day(m): 7:55am On Sep 27, 2019
On Tuesday, the 24th of September, the price of Bitcoin dropped by 18 per cent. It was the largest intraday drop in the cryptocurrency’s price since January 2018.

The price has since stabilised, but the drop could be attributed to three main factors, which have been highlighted by Marius Reitz, General Manager for Africa at a global cryptocurrency company, Luno.

These include:

1. Negative sentiments: According to Reitz, “the main reason for the drop has been the negative sentiments across all markets caused by the global geopolitical news flow”.

This, he said, has impacted all asset classes and has happened at a time of low liquidity which has led to volatility.

“When there is more liquidity and markets go risk-off there is still money going into safe haven assets, gold, yen, etc. As Luno has commented previously, these investors have often placed a small amount into Bitcoin as a hedge. But even safe havens are struggling to find buyers. Bitcoin dropped on 24 September and gold dropped on 25 September,” Reitz said.

2. The potential impact of new Bakkt exchange: There could have been a link on the 24th with the start of Bitcoin Futures trading and physical settlement on the ICE-backed Bakkt exchange.

This could have further reduced liquidity, but the downward trend was almost certainly a function of the overall market sentiment, Reitz said.

3. Volatility of new asset classes: Cryptocurrencies, like all new asset class, will always have a higher level of volatility compared with traditional trading, said Reitz.

However, as the benefits (especially to developing markets which are disadvantaged by traditional financial services systems) become clear, more people and businesses will hold the coins for their utility value. This will reduce speculation and volatility.

As regulation is introduced and the functionality of the coins increases, the true price will become more consistent.

Events / 5 Money Tips You Wish You Got Before Your Wedding by Nigeria2day(m): 7:20am On Sep 27, 2019
A wedding is one of those life events that anyone would love to make as memorable as possible.

But must you break a bank to make your wedding memorable?

Here are 5 money tips that will help you prepare for a successful wedding.

1. Save For Your Rent Separately From The Wedding Budget: When planning your wedding, the most important money decision you can make is to save for your rent.

Your new wife must have a place to call home after you have married her. And you do not want your landlord knocking on your door a few days after your wedding.

So, to be on the safe side, check the rent off your worry list by saving for it before the wedding. The truth is that there is no amount of money that would ever be enough for a wedding ceremony.

As you plan the wedding, unexpected expenditures would come up, but bear in mind that the wedding would still go ahead if you don’t provide that money. So, resist all pressure to dip your hands into the savings for rent.

A smart way to save your rent would be to stash it away at a fixed deposit account or invest it in government securities. Don’t put it in your savings account where you have easy access.

2. Do Not Spend More Than 3 Months Of Your Salary On Either The Wedding Or The Rent: Draw a budget and stick to it. Make sure that neither the rent nor the wedding budget exceeds your three months salary.

If you hold a job, you probably have been saving for the wedding. That’s a smart money decision already.

You may find yourself in an awkward position after the wedding if you go all out to blow all your savings on the wedding or rent.

3. Trust Your Wife With Money: You may have heard in some places that women are natural money-doublers. This is very true and you are about to find out. Let your wife-to-be in on some money decisions as you plan the wedding. They have the uncanny abilities to take bold money decisions that will save you lots of expenditure.

This should not end after the wedding. In fact, this is the time to appoint your wife the de facto finance manager of the family. You will thank us for it.

Also, read Understanding the legal process of reclaiming your dead relative’s money from banks (2)

4. Learn To Save All The Money Given To You As Gifts: During the wedding celebrations, many of the guests will come bearing gifts. And some will bring cash gifts especially some of your friends who are unable to make it to the wedding may want to make up for their absence with some cash gifts.

Be smart about the way you handle those cash gifts. Don’t spend them. This is called a windfall. Save all of it, and you won’t regret it. It would provide a financial buffer you will need to make your honeymoon very enjoyable.

5. Consider A Destination Wedding: Destination wedding does not mean you go to Dubai or London to host it. You can decide to take it away from the city where you live, maybe a suburb or your village. If you live in Lagos for instance, and a lot more of your guest will be coming from outside Lagos, say from your village, consider hosting the wedding in your village or state capital. No matter how much you may spend, you will spend far less compared to hosting it in Lagos.

In Lagos, as it is in many city centres in Nigeria, the cost of renting a hall and catering alone is enough to host the wedding for you in your hometown.

Politics / BREAKING! Osinbajo To Sue Timi Frank, Katch Ononuju For Defamation by Nigeria2day(m): 5:22pm On Sep 25, 2019
Former APC spokesperson, Timi Frank has a reason to be afraid.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Wednesday it will sue former Frank, alongside one Katch Ononuju for engineering libellous and defamatory rumour that had been making the rounds over the past few days.

“In the past few days, a spate of reckless and malicious falsehoods have been peddled in the media against me by a group of malicious individuals.

“The defamatory and misleading assertions invented by this clique have been making the social media rounds anonymously.

“I have today instructed the commencement of legal action against two individuals, one Timi Frank and another Katch Ononuju, who have put their names to these odious falsehoods,” Osinbajo tweeted on Wednesday afternoon.

Nairaland / General / Understanding Legal Process Of Reclaiming Dead Relative’s Money From Banks (2) by Nigeria2day(m): 9:29am On Sep 23, 2019
In the first part of this series, we tried to explain the two things that happen to one’s bank account at death. This is a continuation of the explanation of the legal process of claiming deceased relative’s money from the banks.

You can read the first part here - www.nigeriatodaynews.com

TYPES OF GRANTS:

Basically, there are three (3) types of grants. They are:

1) Grant of Probate: this is granted where the deceased died testate, leaving a valid Will with executors who are willing, capable and available to act validly appointed under the Will. Here the Executors have been appointed under the Will. The main concern of the court is to grant Probate to the executors named in the Will to administer the estate.

2) Grant of Administration with Will annexed: Here, the deceased died testate (leaving a Will), but failed to appoint Executors under the Will; or the executors appointed renounced Probate, or are incapable of applying for Probate or unavailable or have long died or are infants etc. In such cases, the court is concerned with the grant of Letters of Administration to persons who are interested in the estate to administer the estate of the testator.

3) Grant of simple Administration: This arises where the deceased died intestate or where he died testate, but some part of his estates are not covered by the Will and there is no residuary clause or where the Will is declared invalid. A residuary clause is a clause in a will that takes care of the money in the bank or properties which are not covered or gifted in the will.

Note that Letters of Administration may either be general or limited. Where it is general, the Administrators have the authority to act for all purposes in the administration of the estate, extending to all the property in the estate without any time limit. On the hand, the grant could be limited as to time, purpose or property.

Sports / All Won’t Be Well At Arsenal Until Emery Lets Xhaka Go by Nigeria2day(m): 8:55am On Sep 23, 2019
There are so many talking points from the weekend that I don’t even know where to start from. But let’s begin with Arsenal. You see, Arsenal’s problems seem like a lot. But the solution is just one - Xhaka. Until Emery learns to stop giving that guy an Arsenal shirt, not to talk of the captain’s band, all won’t be well at Arsenal.

With one man down and a goal down in the 72nd minute, Xhaka was substituted. A little more than 10 minutes later, the Gunners were winning 3-2. Even the defensive problems can largely be attributed to the feebleness and cluelessness of the player sitting just in front of the defence.

While Luiz and Sokratis pairing indeed look very unconvincing, with a proper defensive shield, they won’t be this calamitous.

It still boils down to Xhaka. If Emery doesn’t get this aspect of his selection right very quickly, #EmeryOut might become more than just a hashtag. You can’t be driving a trailer heading straight into a brick wall and expect to be cheered on.

Watching Barca as they lost 2-0 was like watching Stoke City. I’ve never seen a star-studded team play so poorly against a far inferior opponent. The only hope for Barca, as it has been over the years, was Messi. Upon introduction, El Maestro orchestrated the attack and gave it more bite. But not even Messi the Great could save this debilitated side, led by the abundantly uninspiring Ernesto Valverde, from a beating made and served in Granada.

United weren’t any better. Away at West Ham, the Red Devils were reduced to such meek lambs, it was very painful and humiliating to watch. If you think having Rashford as the top striker was really bad, you need to see how worse it became after the Englishman limped off. United played without a pattern and without heart, one would be forgiven for thinking they played without a manager. Which is exactly what sets United apart from Chelsea.

Nairaland / General / Spiritual Konji: How Prophet Daniel Was Caught Masturbating With Anointing Oil by Nigeria2day(m): 6:13pm On Sep 22, 2019
Depending on how you see things, this story is all shades of silly, annoying and funny!

Ms Joy Muriyaro was in her shop minding her business on Tuesday, September 17 when one 41-year-old David Daniel approached her.

He came under the guise of being a prophet sent to her by God and he was sure that No 31 Olarenwaju Street Ejigbo was the correct address.

'Prophet Daniel' claimed that he saw in a vision that Ms Joy was having spiritual problems. He even foresaw her having fibroid growth in her womb in the future.

He collected 3,050 naira cash from her and a bottle of perfume worth 1,000 Naira meant for a so-called spiritual cleansing.

Daniel, however, did not think the cleansing could be done remotely. So, he asked that they should go to her house.

For reasons we do not understand, Ms Joy also did not think it was wrong to take a stranger to her house. So she obliged him.

When they got to the house, he ordered her to remove her clothes for him to rob anointing oil on her buttocks.

Like a lamb before a shepherd, she obeyed again, but what happened after this left her in shock.

She caught the suspect masturbating while robbing the anointing oil on her buttocks and then she realised she was merely being used for sexual pleasure.

She stormed the Ejigbo police station to report and the suspect who lives at No 2 Ailegun Road Ejigbo was arrested around 8:45 pm.

He has since been charged to Court for Indecent Assault and remanded in Kirikiri Prison.

Nairaland / General / Let Nigeria Feel Your Positive Impact, IBB Challenges Igbos by Nigeria2day(m): 8:48am On Sep 22, 2019
Former military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, IBB on Saturday challenged the Igbos to ensure that Nigerians continue to feel their positive impact.

He said this was due to their tenacity in business enterprises which spans the length and breadth of the country and beyond.

Babangida made the remark in Minna, when the Igbo Delegates Assembly (IDA), from the 19 Northern states and Abuja, visited him for his recent 78th birthday.

The delegation was led by the IDA president, Chief Chikezie Okezie and the Eze Igbo of Minna, Eze Pampas Wahiwe.

“You should continue to allow your positive impacts to be felt among host ethnic nationalities in the country, as you explore business opportunities available.

“Nigerians, Igbos inclusive, should ensure they uphold the ideals of Nigeria’s founding fathers.

“An indivisible Nigeria is very necessary, and we must do everything possible to remain as one family, though we differ in tribe and tongue,” he said.

TV/Movies / We Went To See The Millions Movie, Here Is What We Think by Nigeria2day(m): 2:56pm On Sep 18, 2019
Title: The millions

Genre: Thriller

Producer: Chika Lann

Director: Toka Mcbaror

Duration: 1hr 34minutes

Synopsis

The Millions tells a story of Bem Kator (Ramsay Noah), a professional con man who swindles greedy men off their hard-earned money. On this fateful occasion, he happens to con the wrong man, one Alhaji played by Ali Nuhu, a drug dealer who doubles as a money doubler, to a tune of 6 million Naira. Meanwhile, after Ben spends the money, the Alhaji catches up with him and forces him to pay back the money which he no longer has. He is given one week to pay back the money.

However, an underground petty thief, (Ayo Mayokun) offers him a deal to break into a house and steal 42 million dollars.

Therefore, Bem, fighting to save his life and regain his feet in a trade he has spent most of his life in, assembles a team of thieves and con men like himself and goes after the booty.

The film also stars Toyin Abraham and Blossom Chukwujekwu. Atinosa Edemudia makes a cameo.

The analysis

This is a hit film, I categorize The Millions in the range of high-end Nollywood heist thrillers.

The Millions reportedly cost N60 million to make and was shot in many notable parts of Nigeria including Lagos, Kaduna and Abuja.

The Pros

The strengths of this movie are in its characterization. The millions is a star-studded film, staring the crème de la crème of Nollywood. One thing deeply admirable about the cast of this film is the beautiful castellation of new and old Nollywood.

Ramsey Noah is beautiful in his role as Bem Kator. A seasoned con man who goes on a first-time robbery heist to pull off the highest of its kind in history and ends up using his wits to outwit his employer. No one could have portrayed that better than him. He was magnificent and adorable.

Even though sometimes, you feel like he is being pampered and treated like an egg, we liked watching him improvise in every step of the way to reach his goal. He has some down moments but he made it up with beautiful acting.

Blossom Chukwujekwu was above average in his portrayal of Jerome. A cold feet ex-con man who is battling to save his precious marriage to a troublesome wife who eventually proved to be more criminal than the husband.

The two appearances of Toyin Abraham was spectacular and even though we wanted to see her as a modern control freak, she appeared like a Jehovah witness wife trying to bring back her erring husband back home.

However, this character obviously contrasted with her second appearance where she stole the van with the millions, she is now a razz hooligan-like get-away driver.

Ayo Mayokun is almost hilarious, his lines are filled with near-flat-jokes, near-serious-punches that fell midway beneath the belt. But nonetheless he delivered as a petty thief who is in his first-time fieldwork.

Chika Lann in her debut was an uncharacteristic actress who didn’t just struggle with her lines but kept her thick Igbo accent thick and bloody. Her lines falling a little below the beat; she proved the only obvious miscast.

But since it’s her film, I heard the audience repeatedly asking quietly if she MUST appear.

Nancy Isime was charming, a darling and even though she was robotic at some point. She gave us the quintessential Nigerian aje butter pikin. Until her final appearance where the filmmaker tried to sweep us off our feet in their desperate attempt to surprise the audience, she appears wearing her trainer belt to flaunt a bad-girl-booty, she came a little off.

The other character who obviously held his ground was Ali Nuhu. A drug lord who runs a side gig in money doubling. Ali was into his character, held his role like a pro and punched us in the face at the end as a lord who was beaten in his own game.

Cinematography

The Million is one of those films which reminds you of the potentials of Nollywood as an emerging film making titan. Even though we are not there yet, one can proudly say we have made a quantum leap in cinematography.

The cinematography is top-notch. The pictures are no different from that of Hollywood. There is no car chase or man-falling-from-the-sky wingless kind, but there is no shaky and beneath the brow kind of picture we are used to in Nollywood.

The Cons

After seeing the movie, I kept wondering why they would hire diggers. The plot would have made more sense if they had had to dig themselves, which is the core of the movie. Most of the conversations would have revolved around the digging. In other heist movies I have seen, the robbers are not afraid to get their hands really dirty.

More so, one thing that is obviously still lacking in our Nollywood films is its lack of character distinction. There is no apparent effort to separate the fictional character from the real person playing the role. So, most times, we are watching the real person and not any fictional character.

For instance, when you walk out of the cinema, you might not be able to remember the names of the characters, which is the indistinctiveness I am talking about. So, you are forced to call the characters by their real names.

Rating

So, do I recommend The Millions? Of course. Does it make an interesting watch? Of course.

And since I am doing this by midweek, I am going to be generous to Chika Lann in her debut. Not many get this far. But this N60 million movie definitely comes out as 8/10.

Thank you for reading!

Politics / Xenophobia: Obasanjo’s Letter To South Africa's Mangosuthu Buthelezi by Nigeria2day(m): 4:09pm On Sep 16, 2019
…Urges Nigeria, others to report at AU

Tunji Bosun, Abeokuta

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo has urged the African countries, whose citizens were affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa to report to the African Union.

Obasanjo also advised the affected countries include Nigeria to take other measures if the first option did not yield the desired results.

Obasanjo stated this on Monday in his latest letter written to the founder of the Inkatha Freedom Party, in South Africa, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.

The former president said he wanted the affected African countries to table appropriate motions at the African Union as a first option and consider other measures if the situation continues unabated.

Obasanjo, who described xenophobic attacks on foreigners by South Africans as a great disservice to Africa, called for urgent reconciliation between the xenophobic countries and South Africa.

He said, “For any African country to encourage or allow or not seriously sanction xenophobia against Africans in their country is a great disservice not only to the country where xenophobia takes place and the countries of the victims concerned, but also a great disservice to the whole of Africa and black race.

“At this juncture, there is need for fence-mending, reconciliation and wound-binding between South Africa and the countries whose citizens have been victims of xenophobia and afrophobia in South Africa.

“As a suggestion, South Africa should send emissaries to the countries concerned to explain, apologise and agree on the way forward for mutual understanding, accommodation, reconciliation, and binding the wound to promote unity, concord, and brotherhood in Africa.

“Repatriation of Nigerians from South Africa is obviously not a permanent solution. At best it is palliative. But the hurt will still remain for some time. Neither is revenge a desirable solution. Mutual understanding and acknowledgement of what needs to be done on all sides is imperative and getting down to doing them is the solution that will serve Nigeria and South Africa and indeed Africa well particularly in this era of Africa Continental Free Trade Area opportunities.

“Nigeria and South Africa must stand together to champion African cause and to jointly shepherd African development, unity, cooperation, security, and progress to make the 21st century Africa’s century”.

Business / Understanding The Legal Process Of Reclaiming Dead Relative's Money From Banks by Nigeria2day(m): 12:36pm On Sep 16, 2019
Have you ever had to worry about what will happen to the money in your bank account if you were to suddenly "disappear"?

In this piece, light is beamed on an aspect of personal property, “money in the bank” and what happens to it when you die.

Upon the death of a person, two things may happen to the money standing to the credit of a deceased account holder.

1. The money may remain unclaimed by the estates/successors of the deceased. This happens especially where the estates/successors of the dead person are unaware of the existence of such money and are not in any way informed of the existence of it by the bank.

2. The money may be claimed by the concerned estates of the deceased following the laid down procedures. This is the focus of this piece.

Politics / Governor Makinde To Unveil 20-year Development Agenda For Oyo by Nigeria2day(m): 10:08am On Sep 16, 2019
Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State says his government is planning to launch a 20-year development agenda to save the state from an underwhelming performance.

Makinde made this known on Sunday in Ibadan while speaking at the closing of a two-day retreat for members of the State Executive Council and his senior aides.

He said that the launch of the development agenda would set a high bar for his administration’s developmental objectives.

”We have been underachieving for many years; administrations had come and gone. Yes, they did their best, but still, we have to set a high bar for ourselves.

”Within the shortest possible time, we have to put in place a strategic development plan for the state.

”Administrations had come and gone, but most of them operated on ad-hoc bases. We will put in place a 15 to 20-year development plan for Oyo State, and we will be bullish about our development plans.

”Of course, we are aware that our mandate, for now, is for four years. What we want to do now is to put up a plan or vision so that successive administrations will not need to go back to do the work again.

”We will do the work. Who knows whether the leadership of the next administration is here with us? So we should not take anything for granted,” he said.

Politics / Two Things Likely To Happen If Tribunal Nullifies Buhari's Election On Wednesday by Nigeria2day(m): 7:34pm On Sep 10, 2019
The presidential election tribunal on Tuesday announced that it will on Wednesday deliver judgment on the petition before it as regards Atiku Abubakar of Nigeria's main opposition party, the People's Democratic Party, PDP and President Muhammed Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Atiku Abubakar, who was the presidential candidate of the PDP in February poll had filed a suit challenging the victory of the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, President Muhammed Buhari, during the presidential election.

The tribunal's decision if it goes Atiku's way will be a historic ruling as it will be the first time an election tribunal will sack a sitting president.

Meanwhile, as Nigerians wait expectantly for the decision of the tribunal, a legal practitioner, Isaac Mmaduabuchi, Esq, has weighed in on the likely implication of the tribunal ruling in favour of the PDP candidate.

According to him, two things are likely to happen if the tribunal nullifies President Buhari's re-election.

First, they may declare Atiku, PDP's candidate the winner. Second, they may order a rerun.

According to Mmaduabuchi, "Irrespective of the above possibilities, we expect the Supreme Court to also have a bite at the case as well. Any party that loses will move to the Supreme Court to also look at the matter.

Sports / Can We At Least Pretend Andy Ruiz Is A Terrific Boxer Even Though He Truly Is? by Nigeria2day(m): 9:16am On Sep 10, 2019
I watched with horror, in the wee hours of June 2, as the fat guy, Andy Ruiz, lived up to his nickname and destroyed unified WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight champion, our beloved Anthony Joshua, taking away all his titles in the process. I remember as my screaming voice pierced through the veil of the silent night as Ruiz calmly inflicted a humiliating punishment on our champion, round after round until he finally floored him in the 7th.

Even though I had my worries about Ruiz beating AJ before the fight, especially after checking Ruiz’ record and fighting style, I still didn’t believe AJ would lose. And if I hadn’t seen that fight as it unfolded, I’d probably be among those not giving Andy Ruiz a chance in the rematch billed for Diriyah in Saudi Arabia on December 7 even though he’s now champ.

But right now, more boxing personalities are beginning to see the greatness of Andy Ruiz, none more so than the former champ himself.

“We can’t overlook Andy and his talent and his success in the ring as I’m fighting the best out there right now,” AJ who has always prided himself as being the best heavyweight in the world said. “In my opinion, Andy Ruiz is the best heavyweight out there.”

The only people finding AJ’s stand an impossible one to assume are his fans who believe, quite strongly I might add, that that unfortunate fight in the midnight of June 2 was fixed.

“I think Anthony Joshua match against Ruiz was fixed. How cud this ‘opolo’ man beat our ‘fit fitter fitted’ man? I believe there is more to this than the stage,” an AJ fan said on Twitter.

Others said the match was fixed so bookmakers won’t lose a lot of money as would happen if AJ won, while others still insist the initial loss would make the rematch an instant hit, the kind of excitement boxing sorely craves at the moment.

Politics / Plea For Pardon: Vacate Office Now, PDP Tells Buhari by Nigeria2day(m): 9:15am On Sep 09, 2019
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to save the election tribunal time by vacating office immediately.

This was in reaction to a video clip that surfaced online last week where Information Minister Lai Mohammed begged Nigerians to pardon President for misplacing his WAEC certificate.

In a statement on Sunday signed by its Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said it has “reviewed the video of the media interview by the Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and surmised that President Buhari should save the judiciary and the nation further troubles by immediately throwing in the towel and vacating the presidential seat following the official admission that he (Buhari) does not possess a WAEC certificate, contrary to his claims and disposition before the law”.

The statement further read: “Our party mocks the Buhari Presidency for pushing out the video wherein the Minister pleaded with Nigerians to pardon President Buhari over his false WAEC certificate claims.

“The PDP notes the deliberate ploy of Alhaji Lai Mohammed to appeal to sentiments, seeing that Mr President had failed to defend himself before the Presidential petition tribunal.

Title: Mokalik

Genre: Drama

Director: Kunle Afolayan

Location: Nigeria

Time: 1h 39m

Casts: Femi Adebayo, Simisola Ogunleye, Charles Okocha, Tooni Afolayan

Intro:

Having seen a lot of Kunle Afolayan’s films, you would immediately jump into conclusion that Mokalik is another hit or would be.

Why, because Kunle is such a genius that anything he touches often always comes out as a masterclass.

From October 1, Figurine, and the CEO to start with, Kunle gives the world nothing but the best.

Therefore, for Mokalik to come from such a creator, it already has lots of preconceived credits.

But whether Mokalik meets this credit or not, depends on who you are and who you talk to – a filmgoer or a film critic.

Summary

Mokalik is a film that screams Africa. From the name Mokalik which is indigenisation of the word, mechanic, the Yoruba language hits you in the face and retains the originality of the story without smearing the tale with limitation.

Mokalik tells a story of Ponmile, an 11-year-old African boy from a middle-class family who is taken to a mechanic workshop by his father to be an apprentice for his summer holiday.

In the course of one-day trial-apprentice, Ponmile discovered that this is what he has always wanted to do in his life.

At the end of the day, when his father comes to take him home, Ponmile must decide whether he will continue with his apprentice or go back to school.
