Nairaland / General / Has Ebonyi Student Lied About Fasting For 41 Days? What Doctors Say by Nigeria2day(m): 6:10pm On Sep 08, 2019
On the 6th of September 2019, a story went viral on Facebook of a young man, Ikechukwu Oke, who had been hospitalised after 41-day fasting and prayer without food and water.

This kind of fast is popularly known as dry fasting.

The story had stirred the pot in Nigeria. While some prayed for the young man’s quick recovery, others argued that even though the veracity of the story could not be doubted, it is not possible that a human being can outdo Jesus Christ in food fasting.

Meanwhile, some medical doctors who spoke to a Nigeria Today correspondent have also expressed concern over the validity of the claim.

They said that while it is possible that a human being can survive for 41 days without food or supplement, it is impossible to survive more than seven days without water.

According to Dr Alex Oshim, a medical doctor at MedPlus Hospital, Ajah Lagos state, no human being can survive without water for 41 days.

He said, “I do not believe that a human being can survive 41 days without water. It is not medically possible, and it has never happened before.”

Nairaland / General / Mugabe: An African Hero, A Zimbabwean Villain by Nigeria2day(m): 5:33pm On Sep 08, 2019
When the President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa announced the death of former President Robert Mugabe on Friday, September 6, many African leaders did not quite know what to say in their tributes.

Mnangagwa, the man who ended his 37-year-rule in a coup described him as an icon of liberation.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari said Mugabe’s sacrifices, especially in struggling for the political and economic emancipation of his people, will always be remembered by posterity.

South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa said his people joined Zimbabweans in mourning “the passing of a liberation fighter and champion of Africa’s cause against colonialism”.

But not many in Zimbabwe hold a similar opinion of the former schoolteacher who led the Southern African country with iron fists for close to four decades that he was in charge.

In Africa, everyone knew what he stood for. He was anti-colonialist, anti-imperialist and a champion of African nationalism. Each time he spoke, he did not hide his disgust at any perceived white supremacy tendencies in any part of Africa.

He seemed to be the only black African leader who had the guts to challenge the western authorities while paying deaf ears to vitriolic criticisms by western media which had hitherto sought to keep most African leaders in check over the past decades of independent Africa. For those reasons, he was loved by many across the continent.

But in Zimbabwe, the story is totally different. He is best remembered for his intolerance to any form of opposition, human rights abuses and poor economic policies which plunged most Zimbabweans into poverty and sent hundreds of thousands fleeing from their home country in a struggle for survival.

Nairaland / General / Financial Crisis Looms As Nigeria Battles Dwindling Revenue by Nigeria2day(m): 11:37am On Sep 03, 2019
Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria may be on the brink of another financial crisis as it battles dwindling revenue amidst rising debt costs, says civic-tech organisation, BudgIT.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, the organisation said that in its analysis of the federal government 2018 budget performance showed that the government spent a sum of N7.51 trillion based on total revenue of N3.86 trillion, creating a deficit of N3.64 trillion.

It also noted that while the Nigeria federal government planned to earn N7.16 trillion in 2018, it was only able to earn N3.85 trillion, which represents 54% revenue performance.

According to BudgIT’s examination, the government is also spending more on debt servicing at the same time its debt profile is growing astronomically. Although it recorded a revenue of N3.86 trillion, the government spent N5.86 trillion on recurrent expenditure, meaning that N2 trillion was borrowed to fund recurrent expenses.

Nairaland / General / What Happens To Your Bank Account When You Die? by Nigeria2day(m): 1:54pm On Sep 02, 2019
Eliot (not real name) got involved in a ghastly motor accident while travelling to Enugu from Lagos.

Everybody in the vehicle was killed including him. Through the passengers’ manifest that he filled before boarding, the bus company contacted his relatives who came and claimed his corpse.

That was the beginning of unforeseen troubles for the family members. Eliot was a businessman in Lagos. His wife and only child lived in the village.

His travel had been to go and see them. Now, his death threw the family into confusion. He had been the one supporting his family financially including his aged mother.

After the burial, the family members started asking questions about Eliot’s finances and property in Lagos.

After his death, it was normal to find his money to help the family, particularly his wife, to get on her feet while she considers what to do with her life.

To cut the long story short, Eliot’s bosom friend knew the bank that kept Eliot’s money. He took the wife to the bank so she can claim it.

Unfortunately, it was not the wife’s name that was listed as Eliot’s next of kin. The account had been opened before Eliot got married and he had listed his older brother as next of kin.

Sadly, the older brother had also passed on two years earlier. The bank would not release the money to her. For the bank to do that, it reeled out a series of steps and legal documents that must be provided.

A journalist once asked a mobile money operator what happens to the credit on a user’s mobile money wallet in the case of death.

The mobile money operator looked aghast. Obviously, he didn’t expect such a question. In the end, he told the journalist to not try to be so morbid.

As the mobile money operator, the question of what happens if we die is one many would rather not talk about. Unfortunately, this rather happens sooner than later.

Nairaland / General / How Nigeria Today Reporter Narrowly Escaped Mob Attack At A Lagos Abattoir by Nigeria2day(m): 12:55pm On Sep 02, 2019
It was a Saturday to remember. I was thrilled because I didn’t have much official work to do. But around mid-day, I received a phone call for an urgent meeting, so I had to run.

While going I had to take a bus across the abattoir in my area in Isolo. I have never been to any abattoir before. And I have to say, it was the worst place I had ever seen in my life.

The abattoir is a mid-size open market for freshly killed meats of all sorts. There is goat meat, beef from cows, chicken and turkey. But there is also pork, ponmo or cow skin, etc. all these are killed and roasted in the same place, washed and butchered in the same spot, and then sold at the same place.

Meanwhile, from a mile away, one can perceive the stench oozing from the place. It was not a regular stench but a drenched thick clutter of putrid smell, like some living things had died and are now rotting away nearby. I had to cover my nose while I passed by.

At the end of the Tokyo International Conference on Africa that took place last week, Ghana walked away with a deal from Toyota to establish an auto plant in the West African country.

Ivory Coast also entered a similar deal with Toyota, signing a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU to seal it last Thursday.

But Nigeria came back with only $300,000, about 108 million naira from the Japanese government and a basketful of promises. And Nigeria’s opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP has a problem with that.

According to a statement by the party on Sunday, that shows that the international community has rejected President Muhammadu Buhari even as it is an indication that no one wants to do business with Nigeria any longer.

The statement read: “The PDP says the disgraceful outing and poor attention given to President Muhammadu by world leaders and investors at the 7th Tokyo International Conference on Africa Development has further confirmed his rejection by the international community.

Nairaland / General / Italian Oil Firm Makes BIG Gas Discovery In Niger Delta by Nigeria2day(m): 3:52pm On Aug 27, 2019
An Italian oil major, Eni, has said that it has made a huge gas and condensate discovery onshore Niger Delta.

Eni said on Tuesday that through its affiliate, Nigerian Agip Oil Company, it made a significant gas and condensate find in the deeper sequences of the Obiafu-Obrikom fields, in Oil Mining Lease 61, Punch reports.

It said the Obiafu-41 deep well had reached a total depth of 4.374 m, encountering an important gas and condensate accumulation within the deltaic sequence of Oligocene age comprising more than 130m of high-quality hydrocarbon-bearing sands.

“The find amounts to about one trillion cubic feet of gas and 60 million barrels of associated condensate in the deep drilled sequences,” Eni said in a statement.

According to the Italian firm, the discovery has further potential that will be assessed with the next appraisal campaign.

It said, “The well can deliver in excess of 100 million standard cubic feet/day of gas and 3,000 barrels/day of associated condensates, and will be immediately put on-stream to increase NAOC’s gas production.

Nairaland / General / American Embassy Increases Visa Application Fee To N99,900 For Nigerians ONLY by Nigeria2day(m): 3:39pm On Aug 27, 2019
The United States Embassy in Nigeria says effective from Thursday, August 29, 2019, Nigerians applying for tourism, student and business visas will not only pay the N59, 200 fee but will have to pay an extra $110 (N40, 700) after the visa has been issued to them bringing the total cost to N99, 900.

However, applicants who are denied visas would not need to pay the extra N40, 700.

Applicants seeking the L1 Visa (work permit) will pay an extra N112, 100 if given visas while those applying for H4 Visa (dependency/spousal) will pay an extra N66, 600.

The US Embassy adopts the rate of N370/$1 for Nigerians which is higher than both the official rate and the black market rate.

The increment also comes amid complaints from hundreds of Nigerian visa applicants that they had not been able to secure US visa appointment dates despite making payments for visas.

The embassy said in a statement that the increment was done based on reciprocity.

The US Embassy lamented that Americans were paying too much to secure Nigerian visas and therefore the US government decided to retaliate.

The US embassy said it had been holding talks with the Nigerian government to reduce the fee but the Federal Government refused to accede to its requests.

The directive comes less than four months after the US cancelled the dropbox system for Nigerian visa applicants which used to allow Nigerians who have a travel history to the US to apply for visas without going for interviews at the embassy.

Politics / Buhari Vs Atiku: What No One Has Told You About The Supreme Court Ruling On Inec by Nigeria2day(m): 5:44pm On Aug 26, 2019
On the 20th of August, the apex court struck out an appeal filed by Nigeria’s opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate Atiku Abubakar challenging the Presidential Election Tribunal’s dismissal of their request to access the INEC “central server”.

PDP and its presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar, had alleged that the “server” housed the results of the poll electronically transmitted by the Independent National Electoral Commission during the exercise.

Meanwhile, INEC denies that the result was transmitted via any other means except through manual collation through the designated centres by the accredited electoral officers.

The Point You May Have Missed

To clear any misconceptions that may arise from the proceedings, the former spokesman of Atiku campaign organisation, Mr. Segun Sowunmi said that the apex court did not nullify the petition totally but dismissed it hoping that the server issues will be considered within-trial and if not yet properly considered, the PDP will still have ample time to bring it before the supreme court.

Mr Sowunmi made the clarification while featuring as a guest on the Arise TV Morning Show on Monday.

He said: “At the beginning of trial, our counsels sought to access materials from INEC, and it was not coming forth on time, therefore, they went to court and they went straight to supreme court, but because the tribunal has eventually commenced its work and was about finishing, it was no longer necessary for the supreme court to weigh in on that issue.

“The supreme court simply rested and dismissed that matter believing that within trial, those issues, will either be considered, and if they have not been properly considered, the PDP, its candidate and his counsels, will have more than enough opportunities to bring the matter to the Supreme Court and then it can weigh in properly."

What The PDP Is Seeking From the Tribunal

He also outlined the five focal points that PDP and Atiku Abubakar wants in a court as follows:

Whether the second respondent, in this case, Muhammed Buhari, was at the time of elections, considered qualified to contest in the elections as president of the federal republic of Nigeria.

Whether Muhammed Buhari submitted to the INEC, affidavit containing false information of a fundamental nature, in terms of his qualifications
Whether from the previews and evidence, it was established that the respondent, Muhammed Buhari, was elected by lawful votes cast on the election day(s).

Whether any of the votes cast on that day was invalid by reason of corrupt practices.

Whether the presidential elections conducted by INEC was invalid by reason of non-compliance to the electoral act 2010 as amended and 2019.
