WHY DID GBADEBO CALL YORUBAS AFONJA?

To answer that question, let's revisit the tweet itself which was posted on 01 June 2021.

If we look at that tweet, we will see that the verified account of Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour was replying to two individuals who were using the handles @strategicbayo and @allibaloo.

In the tweet, we can also see that Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour posted the image of a bleating goat which is putting on a red cap with the signature logo of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the cap.

What that tells me is that it is Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, @strategicbayo and @allibaloo that Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour was calling "Afonjaaa!!!"

It is as simple and as straightforward as that.

Trying to extend Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour's playful tweet beyond Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, @strategicbayo and @allibaloo to every Yoruba person on and off Twitter is not only tribalistic and desperate but also wicked.

Lagosians are fed up with the tribalistic, desperate and wicked politics that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his party have been playing in Lagos for more than 23 years now. Why is why it is easy to predict that Lagosians will reject APC's politics of desperation, tribalism and wickedness this 2023.

WHO WILL LAGOSIANS VOTE FOR IN 2023?

Please note that this writeup is not my attempt to do damage-control for Gbadebo Patrick Chinedu Rhodes-Vivour the LP gubernatorial candidate in Lagos.

Therefore, I am left with no choice but to vote for LP's Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour whose party stands the greatest chance against the APC.

BAT planning to attack Ibos if he loses

An OPC guy from Lagos whom is also an APC faithful reached out to me today, with a vital information. He said that they have been instructed to purchase weapons ahead of the elections. The plan is that if for any reason BAT loses out on the election then they should attack the Ibos in their homes at night and make it look like robbery or riot between gang of touts so as not to attract international attention.

In his words, he said they were asked to kill Ibo men precisely in Lagos if BAT loses the election. This attack will last a week in areas like,
Oshodi - Isolo (Mafoluku area to Oke Afa)
Ijora Badia (Amukoko, Alaba Suru, Orile and environs.
Ikate, Itire, Ijesha, Cele, Okota.
Ajegunle, Olodi Apapa, Coconut.
Ojokoro - Ijaye,
Agbara, Ojo and Okoko
Satellite town and Festac
Mushin, towards Ojuelegba those areas they have more Ibo people.

These attacks will be at night not day time.

He said BAT is ready to sink Nigeria at all cost if he loses.

Also, a former LGA chairman in Lagos said to me yesterday over the phone that what the Ibos will face if BAT loses will remain in the history of Nigeria forever.

He also indicated that meetings and more meetings are going on between the politicians and touts to ensure Ibos do not vote in Lagos at all cost.

The bike riders from Niger republic that has flooded the entire Lagos are now being recruited into Lagos bus garages as thugs ahead of the election against the Ibos and are being paid the sum of N2,000 daily just to ensure they don’t turn down the offer.

Please, please and please make this information known to those who have the ears of the international community.

IPOB's DESIGNATION AS A TERRORIST ORGANISATION AND THE SHAME OF A PREJUDICED AND JAUNDICED REPORTING

One of the strangest news I read today was the designation of IPOB as a terrorist group by the UK. It got to my notice as I saw some share it with an unmistakable "I told you" glee. Checking online, as really expected not to miss such development, was virtually all Nigerian media outfits with that news and headline. With all of them screaming the same thing, you are left with the impression that it must be true. Going ahead to read the actual news item, I felt sad; not sad that IPOB was designated a terrorist group by a very notable foreign power, but that virtually all Nigerian media outfits could be sucked into this level of gross disinformation.

This is the line under which they ran to town that the British government has designated IPOB a terrorist organisation: "IPOB is proscribed as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government..."

You would really think there is more than just this until you read their entire articles and find absolutely nothing more. The question to ask is if the UK recognises a group as a terrorist group by the designation of that group as a terrorist group by another country or by her own designation? This is what the UK's terrorism act says:
"The Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism, both in and outside of the UK, as the use or threat of one or more of the actions listed below, and where they are designed to influence the government, or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public. The use or threat must also be for the purpose of advancing a political, religious, racial or ideological cause.
"The specific actions included are: serious violence against a person; serious damage to property; endangering a person's life (other than that of the person committing the action); creating a serious risk to the health or safety of the public or a section of the public; and action designed to seriously interfere with or seriously to disrupt an electronic system. The use or threat of action, as set out above, which involves the use of firearms or explosives is terrorism regardless of whether or not the action is designed to influence the government or an international governmental organisation or to intimidate the public or a section of the public. Action includes action outside the United Kingdom.
"It is important to note that in order to be convicted of a terrorism offence a person doesn't actually have to commit what could be considered a terrorist attack. Planning, assisting and even collecting information on how to commit terrorist acts are all crimes under British terrorism legislation."

So, this same UK government, in her laws on terrorism has this to say more:
"The maximum penalty for the following offences will increase from 10 to 14 years
• Membership of a proscribed organisation
• Supporting a proscribed organisation
• Attending a place used for terrorist training"

So, we see clearly that, not only does UK have her proper definition of what terrorism is, and which is not limited to UK soil, she also has prison terms for membership of terror groups, sponsorship of terror groups and being seen where trainings are conducted by such groups. With this, it should become so obvious that, not only would any member of a terrorist group not be welcome in UK, such a person when found in UK is surely on his way to prison. With all these, how then do we reconcile the following from the UK government if indeed they have designated IPOB as a terrorist organisation as Nigerian media houses claim? Read the UK government specifically on IPOB and MASSOB on asylum seeking:

1. Introduction
1.1 Basis of claim
1.1.1 Fear of persecution and/or serious harm by state actors because the person is a member or supporter of, or perceived to belong to, a group that supports a separate state of ‘Biafra’.
1.2.3 There are reported to be several groups aiming for the secession of ‘Biafra’. This Country Policy and Information Note (CPIN) focuses on the 2 main groups, which are: the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of ‘Biafra’ (MASSOB); Indigenous People of ‘Biafra’ (IPOB)
1.2.4 Where a claim is refused, it must be considered for certification under section 94 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 as Nigeria is listed as a designated state in respect of men only.
1.2.5 For information on certification, see the instruction on Certification of protection and human rights claims under section 94 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002 (clearly unfounded claims).
2.2.3 If a person has been involved with IPOB (and/or an affiliated group), MASSOB or any other ‘Biafran’ group that incites or uses violence to achieve its aims, decision makers must consider whether one (or more) of the exclusion clauses under the Refugee Convention is applicable. Persons who commit human rights violations must not be granted asylum."

Are you getting it? Asylum is open to IPOB members! We just read that IPOB and MASSOB members can seek for asylum in UK. However, each application would be treated on individual basis. Any individual that is found to have committed acts that makes him unqualified for asylum would be denied. This is nothing but an official exoneration of the group as a terrorist organisation; if it is not, well, you have to tell me how the UK that imprisons folks for association with terror groups will open up for IPOB to receive asylum in the same UK. This is just the UK saying, "While we recognise that IPOB is not a terror group, we do recognise that her members may commit crimes and we won't allow such ones escape punishment for crimes they commit by an asylum in the UK."

What about this should be causing excitement? That Britain corrected herself from an umbrella provision of asylum to an individual consideration of asylum? Should the tales of "reportedly committed human rights violations in Nigeria" that made them opt for a more cautious approach in reconsidering an umbrella provision of asylum for the group be skewed to mean a designation of terrorists' status for IPOB?

It should be noted that this document on asylum by UK is specifically for issues related to the Biafra agitation. It is not a comprehensive asylum document for all asylum seekers from all countries. So, the portion of the document that read, "EXCLUSION", was simply detailing under what reasons Biafra agitators should be denied asylum. In opening that section, it referenced IPOB's designation as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian government and MASSOB's ban by the Nigerian government, referenced some articles on Nigerian papers on skirmishes between IPOB and the government and then went on to prescribe an individual-based consideration for members of IPOB or MASSOB seeking asylum rather than the initial umbrella provision the UK government granted the group.

I can't still believe what just happened with this news of UK designating IPOB as a terrorist organisation. Is this severe hatred for the group, IPOB; or hatred for anything Biafra? How come all Nigerian media went for this sort of disinformation? And that some people were gleefully sharing makes it sadder! My take: This is nothing but ignorance at its height or mischief at its depth; or probably a hybrid of the two... mischievorance!

I came to that city for the first time early this century. I would later settle briefly to work as a secondary school leaver.
It was during the infamous Chimaroke Nnamanị times.

Cultism. Killings. Blood.
Those ruled the airwaves and streets and narratives about Enugwu.

If it wasn't Chimaroke vs Fr Mbaka, it was Chimaroke vs anyone who dared to challenge him.
The physical environment disappointed me as it contradicted the picture I had formed of it reading about it in primary school textbooks, newspapers, and catholic magazines.

In fact, in our English language classes those days in the 1990s, the major address sample for our letter writing course was an Enugwu address:

The “Ụwanị” stuck permanently ever.
But above all, it stirred my mentation of Enugwu as an ideal city away from the trading, chaotic environment I had all along been used to.

Sadly, under Nnamanị, I did not see that Enugwu of the Eastern Region I had read. At nights, most of the wide streets of the elite Independence Layout remained thick dark, making me wonder what else makes a city without nightlife and nightlights.

By 2009, I lived to witness the Enugwu I had imagined and idealized. The entire landscape was receiving a transformation. Heaps of dirt began to disappear. Iron thrash bins were fixed into the concrete floors of the pedestrian lanes along the roads, plus the large, neat thrash bins kept at various dumpsites. Nightlife re-emerged vigorously in the areas I knew. Nightlights were a visual pleasure to behold even in Achara Layout. You could just decide to drive through the entire stretch of Ọkpara Avenue from Old Park to All Saints savoring the city's luminosity, fresh air, absolute serenity and security.
What of the famous monstrous Akwata leading to the Coal Camp that was nightmare both for car users and pedestrians? Sullivan made a miracle from it. Water gushed from taps and more pipes were vigorously laid for water reticulation of many areas.
One never knew when Sullivan was to carry out each of these things. All one saw was the project being carried out and finished within record time.
No nonsensical media hypes. No announcements. No bills. No billboards.
He even transformed his Udi area into a massive labyrinth of smooth, lovely roads that make everyone want to travel through it to get to his/her destination faster.
You see, if I was a PhD student of media studies, political science or anthropology, I'd have abandoned my project for the one with the title: “Government Without Media Use: The Sullivan Chime Administration of Enugwu State (2007—2015)”. But I am not.
Such was the glorious and reasonably livable Enugwu of late 2000s until mid-2010s, earning it “one of the 100 resilient cities in the world” at the time.

Then came the one they call Gburugburu.
2015.
2016.
2017.
2018.
2019.
One couldn't know where this Gburugburu stood: He wasn't advancing the good he met and wasn't creating anything better. All one heard was land sales, land grabs, land this, land that.
2020.
2021.
2022.
One couldn't see the much he's done in Enugwu city to maintain the international status of “one of the 100 resilient cities in the world” as a global firm had pronounced it.
Even in his Nsụka municipal area, much couldn't be felt as much was and is still felt in Udi and Nkanụ areas where his predecessors came from. The work that could have been done was swallowed up, for years, by the most stupid sobriquet of “ashụa azụọma” or “Nrashị” — a lazy, backward mercantilist philosophy sold to an unwary, unconscious and hungry crowd to keep them hoodwinked for a long time.

You drive through Enugwu today and you see it has lost all the glories Chime was building (true glories are always in the process of building). Even the untainted GRA is oozing from heaps of rubbish. All the highbrow areas are a mess, to say nothing of the Abakpa, Obiagu, Coal Camp areas.
Yet every idiot — male, female — is hanging a billboard celebrating this Gburugburu. If it was not for his 59th birthday, it was for his “good leadership.” If it was not for his political support (read: machination), it was for his attendance at a social function or even at opening a fuel station or house warming. If it was not at the entrance of the city, it was at heart of the city. The billboards bearing this Gburugburu's picture for useless praises and reasons are so innumerable but his good works in Enugwu are not. More shameful is that the sponsors of these billboards also attach their own pictures for reasons best known to them, competing to outdo each other in the undignified race for onye Gburugburu ga-enye attention.

Perhaps, Sullivan Chime understood what I thought: What would foreign visitors (white people) from Europe or America who frequently came to Enugwu say when they come and see these many billboards in a dirty city? What would be their rating of the people in general?
“These black monkeys,” they'd say in the secret of their cars and thoughts, “they never evolve.”
Sullivan Chime had some sense of shame as a human being. But you can't find that today. The sheer boldness of endorsing and accepting visual glories for doing nothing is a prime sign of absolute human shamelessness (both for the subject of the billboards and the sponsors of the billboards), to say nothing of administrative indignity.
Only the loss of human shame makes it possible for a man to be called mad.

After driving through Enugwu this Sunday when the roads are usually less crowded, I simply shouted “Tụfịakwa!” under my breath.

May 2023 come very fast!
