Health / Re: Of Suicides And The ‘sniper’ Debate by nigeriaschoolne(f): 11:59pm On Jun 03, 2019
matify83:
The most important of life’s battles is the one we fight daily in the silent chambers of the soul—David O. McKay

Following the death in March 2017 of a medical doctor who jumped headlong into the lagoon off Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos, I argued on this page that because some wounds can easily be covered up, we do not always know what people around us are going through or what action they might take when pushed to the edge. I used a two-minute Youtube clip titled ‘Silent Battles’ to illustrate my point in a piece titled ‘The Silent Battles of Life’. Recent developments in our country indicate that many of our citizens do indeed need help without knowing where to turn. That makes them susceptible to depression, a state that has been described as being surrounded by a thousand people yet feeling completely alone.

A 25-year-old graduate of Madonna University returned home from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme to stab himself to death, following signs of depression which his parents noticed and actually did all they could to help. A night guard at the Ekiti state scholarship board hanged himself with clothing material tied to the railing of a building at the ministry of education, after telling his sister-in-law that he was tired of life. A middle-aged man walked into the premises of Wema Bank in the Sango area of Ibadan, stripped naked, climbed the network mast and jumped to his death. A 400-level student of the Department of English and Literary Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, (UNN) posted a revealing suicide note on his Facebook wall and then drank two bottles of ‘Sniper’ to end it all. Faced with the prospect of being withdrawn from the Niger Delta University, a medical student plunged into a river in Ammasoma, Bayelsa State.

From failing examinations to being dumped by a lover to desperation resulting from the biting economic situation or health complications and peer pressure, far too many Nigerians are reaching their breaking point and taking their own lives through various means. Although there is really no credible data with which we can ascertain the magnitude of the problem, figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) put the number of suicide cases in Rivers state in 2017 at 105 with attempted cases at 112. If we extrapolate that for the entire country, we will be looking at very high suicide rates. And if there is anything that recent tragedies have taught, it is that there are many otherwise normal people who nurse a feeling of emptiness and despair that could in turn trigger what is almost becoming an epidemic in our country.

More worrisome is that there is now a body of research that suicide can indeed be contagious with the reported death of one person contributing to such decision by others. In her thesis on this issue, Dr Madelyn Gould puts the blame partly on the media. Even in our country, you see in some publications distasteful photographs of victims dangling on the rope. “Media coverage of suicides has been shown to significantly increase the rate of suicide, and the magnitude of the increase is related to the amount, duration, and prominence of coverage”, said Gould.

Suicide of course is not peculiar to Nigeria. It is a global challenge. In the last 45 years, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), suicide rates have increased by 60 percent globally and now a leading cause of death among young people–the group at highest risk in a third of all countries. In the US, according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the third leading cause of death among people between the age of 15 and 24 while, going by WHO estimates, nearly 30 percent of all suicides worldwide occur in India and China.

In South Korea, Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, suicide is also the leading cause of death among young people. In fact, a recent government report says that more Japanese children and teenagers killed themselves between 2016 and 2017 than in any year since 1986. “We’d love to eliminate such tragedies altogether, but the reality is several hundred children are taking their lives (each year),” an education ministry official reportedly said. “It’s important to teach children how to get help as soon as possible … because it becomes harder and harder to find help once they’re already suffering. The light at the end of the tunnel gets darker and darker until they begin to start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel as death.”

While other societies recognise the problem and are designing solutions to deal with it, the online debate as to whether or not to ban ‘Sniper’, a pesticide that has become the main weapon by which many now terminate their lives, appears our only response. In as much as I have nothing against such a proposition, it will take more than banning ‘Sniper’ to reduce suicides in our country. The president of the association of psychiatrists of Nigeria, Dr Taiwo Sheikh, recently put the number of psychiatrists in Nigeria at about 250. “We are training psychiatrists, both at the West African College of Physicians and the National Postgraduate Medical College, but three out of every five psychiatrists we produce leave the country for greener pastures. One major thing that is eating the field of mental health is brain drain”, he told PUNCH newspaper which did a detailed report on suicide cases in Nigeria.

The implication is that even for those who want to seek help, there may be nowhere to go in a nation that has ‘surplus doctors’. But it is also reassuring that many Nigerians are now speaking out on how those going through any form of stress, personal losses, heartbreak, frustration, grief or experiencing depression can be helped. On Monday, the publisher of Genevieve magazine and a newspaper columnist of repute, Mrs Betty Irabor, used Twitter to share both her personal story and a warning. “Don’t label or judge what you do not understand. If you haven’t walked in a man’s or woman’s shoes you cannot make assumptions about what they do or why they do it. At the time I attempted suicide, I was sick and in pain. There was a volcano somewhere inside of me that needed to erupt and suicide seemed like an option to avoid the eruption. Don’t trivialize anyone’s pain just because it’s not physical and you cannot see it,” she wrote.

What the intervention by Mrs Irabor reveals is that like other societies, we need an urgent national conversation on mental ill-health which might be more prevalent than we imagine because the system makes it difficult for people to even acknowledge they have such challenges to avoid stigmatization. The most famous psychiatric hospital in the country is in Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State. Yet, ‘Aro’ or ‘Aromental’ has for decades been the name with which we tag anybody who may have issues that ordinarily deserve a duty of care. Also because there is no support system, many cannot optimize their potentials. So, beyond counting the body-bags of suicide victims, we need to de-stigmatize the challenge of mental ill-health.

In October 2015, the ‘New York Times’ published a lengthy feature story titled, ‘The Chains of Mental Illness in West Africa’ which speaks to how countries within the sub-region, including Nigeria, maltreat people with mental ill-health. We see it on the streets of major cities in Nigeria where people who ordinarily should be helped are paraded in chains. “Every society struggles to care for people with mental illness. In parts of West Africa, where psychiatry is virtually unknown, the chain is often a last resort for desperate families who cannot control a loved one in the grip of psychosis. Religious retreats, known as prayer camps, set up makeshift psychiatric wards, usually with prayer as the only intervention,” wrote New York Times in the report which also revealed that “at last count, Liberia had just one practicing psychiatrist. Niger had three, Togo four and Benin seven. Sierra Leone had none.”

The report also stated: “Surveys, like one by psychiatrists at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, put the prevalence of schizophrenia, characterized by hallucinations and delusions, at 0.5 to 2.5 percent, roughly the same as the global prevalence. That is at least a million people in countries where chaining is common, like Togo, Ghana and Nigeria.”

In contrast to how we deal with mental ill-health, especially in Nigeria, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) last Sunday aired a special programme titled, ‘A Royal Team Talk: Tackling Mental Health’ in which the Duke of Cambridge, Prince Williams had a roundtable discussion on a football field with Thierry Henry, Gareth Southgate, Danny Rose, Jermaine Jenas and Peter Crouch on depression and suicide. “Men are the hardest-to-reach audience on the subject of mental health. Suicide is the biggest killer of young men under the age of 45”, said Prince Williams who also shared his own harrowing experience following the death of his mother, Princess Diana, which he described as a “pain like no other pain”.

Meanwhile, I commend Mrs Irabor for using her Star Power to help on an issue in which the society is not only failing but becoming part of the problem. If there is any lesson from recent tragedies, it is that we should be sensitive in how we respond to the plights of others, even in the social media. Although the concern of Dr Robert Brandt was more about professional colleagues in the field of medicine in his piece, “Silent Battles that cannot be Won Alone”, his admonition is nonetheless useful for us all: “I know from multiple friends who have been in that dark place that healing often starts with finding a person who will listen to them. Spouting advice and saying ‘just get over it’ cures nothing. Be kind and listen, truly listen. It can be the start of the healing process.”

The Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) and other similar non-profit organisations can be found online, raising awareness on mental health issues in our country and how people can be helped. But sometimes the choice as to whether to carry on or give up is ours to make. In the difficult times in which we live, it is easy to yield to some dark inner pressure when confronted with problems for which we have no immediate solution. In such moments, we must always remember that life, as one writer aptly captured it, is not about waiting for the storm to pass, “it’s about learning how to dance in the rain.”

Your lack of adequate knowledge of unity schools gave you a wrong judgement of it's operations. The unity schools in my area had Igbo's as the highest numbers of admissions according to States and i asked why?

That's why it's called unity school. To foster unity among states, tribes, religion etc.

Does it mean the unity in your locality has your tribe as the highest number of students given admission? NO.

If a quota system was used in establishment of unity schools, then the criteria for admissions are done in such away not to leave any tribe shortchanged in numbers. Anambra state had the highest numbers of students given admission where I reside in the north compared to other states.that's the point I'm making.

So it depends on criteria the govt has adopted in the fed constitution to establishing unity schools in regions & states.

Nkemakonam62:

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, has come a long way in building himself into an irresistible political brand, having served as two-time Speaker Rivers State House of Assembly, two-time governor of Rivers before his appointment into his current position in the federal cabinet. Speaking to Akelicious in this no holds barred exclusive interview during a railway project inspection recently, he went down memory lane on his political journey. He equally commented on the fate of the South-east geopolitical zone ahead of the 2023 presidential election, what awaits the ruling APC, the impact President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has had on the country and essentially why he did not fancy the position of SGF as touted by many.

The election victory of the APC has come and gone, but Nigerians are asking what to expect from the party in the next four years?

If we get revenue, we will deliver on all our promises. The problem is not whether we have the capacity to deliver on our promises, the problem we have is the issue of revenue. Are we able to manage the economy, the answer is yes but to manage the economy, there are basic instruments that must be in place to manage it very well.

There has to be power to create jobs, otherwise, we will be exporting labour or development to countries like Ghana where they have power. The goods produced in Nigeria are not as competitive as the ones produced in other countries because the forces of production are cheaper there.

Here we have cheap labour, they have it there but they have power and we don’t have it here. They have security and we don’t have. The man producing here pays for water, security, power while the man producing in Ghana pays for little because he has water, power, and security.

So, it is cheaper to produce in Ghana and transport to Nigeria than to produce in Nigeria and sell there. For us to move forward, those forces of production must be put in place for our goods to be competitive.

How true is the impression that Amaechi has borrowed so much for railway project?

There is no iota of truth in that impression. That is not correct. Don’t forget that former President Goodluck Jonathan borrowed the loan for the Abuja-Kaduna project. He borrowed $500 million. For Lagos-Ibadan rail project, it was $1.6 billion out of which we were given $1.4 billion while the federal government paid $200 million. That is all we borrowed.

What they hear that make them reach the conclusion that I have borrowed so much is because we said that Lagos-Kano will cost $1.8 billion but nobody has given us that money. Lagos-Calabar rail project will cost $11 billion, yet nobody has given us that money. We said that Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail line would cost $12 billion, yet nobody has given us this money.

I have said that the total requirement for the completion of these three or four rail lines, including Abuja-Itakpe comprising a seaport in Warri, will amount to about $36 billion. We will transform the country if we have $36 billion.

Considering what you did for Buhari during the 2015 presidential election, many felt that Minister of Transportation is not rewarding enough for you; do you feel that SGF would have been better?

I am a hands-on person and probably would not have been a good Secretary to the Government of the Federation. But essentially, I did not reach any agreement with the President. He found me suitable in the transport sector, fine, let me go and deliver there. It is not a thing to worry about. What is important is that this is where I have been called to service.

Will you likely continue in the same ministry in Buhari’s second tenure?

I don’t know and perhaps you may go and ask Mr President that question. If the President reappoints me, I will be glad to serve, but I am not in position to tell you whether he will reappoint me or not. That is at the discretion of Mr President.

What is the way forward, to bring peace to the ruling party, the APC?

I don’t really know how to answer that question because the National Chairman of the party and Mr President are in the best position to answer it because they lead the party. I will however say that the APC needs to do a lot of reengineering and put the party together.

There are lots of meetings that are supposed to be going on in APC like we used to hold those meetings when we were in the PDP. They need to bring caucus together, set up structures at the states and local government levels that will be meeting regularly. They also need to fund those structures.

If these things happen, APC will continue to rule the country but I have a problem with the fact that everybody is not completely involved. When I say that everybody is not completely involved, it is not that because people are holding meetings, there are not anywhere people are holding meetings more than the other, but just that we need to play more party politics.

Why did you sing war song during presidential campaign in the South East and South-South?

I don’t see anything wrong with those war songs I sang during the presidential campaign. Those songs are the traditional songs those people are known with. If you go to Aba, for example and don’t sing Nsogbu Nsogbu, you have not started. Even though the other song was an Ohafia war song, it is better known as Owerri song. They are traditional and artistic.

Again, the songs are to let the Igbo know that it is high time they came into the national politics. They are completely out of the national politics and it will pay them. If Igbo are not found in the national politics, it will be to the detriment of their children.

As the first to dangle the 2023 president carrot to the Igbo, what is the situation now?

I was the first to do that but I don’t know what the situation is now. I don’t know what they will do now for voting against the APC. For refusing to support the APC, they cannot come to the table to demand the presidency slot.

For people like us in the APC, if the Igbo had come and voted Buhari, they would boldly tell Mr President and the National Chairman of the party that presidency should go the Southeast since the South-south; South-west and North-west have produced president. What argument would the Southeast come up with now to convince anybody that they deserve the slot for 2023 president?

What do you advise the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for dragging President Buhari to court?

I won’t give him any other advice because everybody wants to crucify me over the one I gave to him previously. I had told him that it was unnecessary to drag President Buhari to court. That he should rather allow him do his remaining four years for the interest of the country since 2023 is already here with us. Some persons felt that it was an unnecessary advice and I stopped.

Can you dispel or confirm it that you are strategizing for 2023 and that you may go for President or Vice President?

I am not up to age of those contesting for the positions because the president is for those that are 70 years and above. It is implied in the constitution that you must be 70 years and above to be the President and you must be 68 years to be the Vice President. I am just 54 years this month, May. And since I am not qualified by age, how can anyone say that I am going for the positions.

Did it occur to the APC-led federal government that things are getting very difficult for Nigerians now?

They are lying to say that things are getting difficult for Nigerians. It is not true and people are not being fair to the President to say that things are getting more and more difficult. The story of Nigeria is the story of the pyramid. Nigeria had like 10,000 rich men and 10 million poor people before Buhari came in. Starting from the former military Heads of State to the civilian presidents, big men were created here and there.

They used instrument of authorities to create those wealthy men but as they created those rich men, people were getting poorer. Creating poverty cannot be under one year, it is over the years. They allowed the rich to acquire wealth to the detriment of the poor. Public institutions were not strengthened, schools were not built, and not much was done about primary health centres.

Don’t forget that when we came in, the dollar was already bouncing and running, forcing many to take the position to devalue the currency and remove oil subsidy as a way of securing the economy. And when the president tried it, and saw dollar ran to N500 per dollar, he got frightened and said no more devaluation.

That is why it now came down to N300 per dollar. If we had continued with that, we would have been in trouble. That was why I said that the intervention of Buhari stopped the Nigeria revolution. If we had continued, people would have started eating themselves.

What we are doing now is to manage what would have happened earlier. What the president is doing now is to get the economy trickle down to the base. If it successfully gets to the base, there will be no revolution. But it will not be easy.

What will you say is the most striking achievement in Buhari’s first four-year tenure and where he needs to improve in his second term?

There is no way anyone can ignore Mr President in the area of infrastructure and he is among the two presidents you cannot ignore. Buhari and Gowon did very well in provision of infrastructural facilities in every part of the country.

Babangida equally tried especially in Abuja and building of the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos State. Buhari equally did well in agriculture and security. In terms of security, it is not about how many policemen deployed in the field, but essentially how you address poverty and hunger.

It is all about employment and that is why he has been shouting that we must create employment. An unemployed must look for food even if you put policeman at his door.

The best way to address insecurity is to create employment and create avenue where income can come to the people. We build infrastructure to create employment. Once contractors are paid and they pay workers, wealth will trickle down to the masses.

What is your take on the impression that President Buhari’s appointments have been sectional?

I don’t have comment. I have said that I don’t understand what people describe as sectional appointment. President will appoint people he knows. You don’t expect him to appoint his enemies. In fact, let us situate this, 60 to 70 per cent of the economy, budget are in the hands of two people from the south, Fashola and Amaechi.

So, why are the northerners not complaining that he gave those key economic positions to the southerners? If I were a northerner, I would tell Mr President to give the South everything and give them those two key positions.

Did it occur to you that you created too many enemies in Rivers like Magnus Abe and others?

Ordinarily, I would not want to comment on that but let us take Magnus, who wants to be governor, for example. I told him that since both of us come from upland, he should allow riverine to go. But he said that I abused him before his wife.

As an Ikwerre man, the assumption in Ikwerre is that if nobody can control a man, his wife should and that was why I called his wife to beg her husband not to run. To show how much he is not a Christian, he told the world that I told the wife that I would finish him if he runs. Is that possible and can you do that to even a mad man?

Most Christians take God for granted because of the principle of forgiveness. It is like what I told Peter Obi after I had won the chairmanship of the Governorship Forum, 19 to 16. I saw him in the Catholic Church after watching him campaigning round the media that I did not win.

I challenged him to kneel down before the Blessed Sacrament in the altar to swear that I did not win that election and I will resign there and then. But he told me that it is politics and I should not bring religion into politics.

So, Magnus, and others rose from my hands politically. God used me as a tool to spring all of them. During the APC presidential campaign in Rivers State, I told Mr President and the crowd that 80 per cent of the current Rivers politicians passed through me. I nominated Austin Opara, the Deputy Speaker for House of Representatives. I put my cousin Celestine Omeha as Commissioner under Rufus Ada George. Magnus and many others passed through me.

Is it true that you cannot walk freely on the streets of Port Harcourt now?

I am surprised you did not see a video of where my people were falling on each other to touch me. The security had a rough day stopping people to allow me pass. I was running and they were chasing me.

I went into a market that would have been very dangerous for anybody like me to prove a point. My security did not even anticipate it. As dangerous as Port Harcourt may be, I can go to anywhere I want to go. I still go out with one car in Port Harcourt.

The Rivers State Police Command has debunked rumours of a terrorist attack on Community Secondary School (CSS), Oroworukwo (D-Line) in Port Harcourt City local government area of Rivers State. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Nnamdi Omoni, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, said the incidence that occurred in the school, had no resemblance of cult attack.

The statement reads in part: “The attention of the Rivers State Police Command has been drawn to a video making the rounds and trending on social media, on the alleged attack on students and staff of Community Secondary School, Oroworokwo, Port Harcourt by student cultists and unknown persons. “Honestly, the command is disturbed by this development and consequently wishes to disabuse the minds of the public and state the true position as follows; “That on May 23, 2019 at about 10:30 hours, the Principal of Community Secondary School, Oroworokwo, Mra. Ruth Major launched a complaint with Olu Obasanjo Police on the denotation of a chemical weapon (canister) by two students of the school; which caused stir and panic in the school.

“That on the receipt of the compliant, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) CSP Lucky Omoniyi detailed ASP Love Tenalo to the scene, whereupon two students namely: Nicodemus Nkaparo ‘m’ 18 years and Darlington Sylvanus ‘m’ 17 years were arrested and taken to the station. “At this point, it has become increasingly necessary to state in an unmistakeable term that; that the incident at Community Secondary School, Oroworokwo was not a terrorist attack or any attempt to kidnap students.

“That it has no resemblance of cult attack. that investigation is still going on with a view to unveiling the circumstances surrounding the incident and bringing the culprits to justice “That so far, normalcy has been restored to the school and it’s environs as normal school activities have resumed in earnest. That the Rivers State Police Command is poised to ensure that sanity is maintained in all primary and tertiary institutions and to guard against breach of security in schools.” Omoni said the two suspects admitted in their statements that they actually detonated the teargas canisters, without knowing that it was a chemical weapon.

He said: “At the station, the Principal made statement relating to her complaint and two suspects were cautioned and equally made statements, where they admitted, detonating the substance but however denied knowing that it was a chemical substance capable of causing panic and tension.

“In his statement, Nicodemus Nkaparo confessed to have brought the canister from their house, which was part of the belongings of his deceased elder brother who was a policeman. He stated further that he did not know that it was a chemical weapon (teargas) which can cause panic and tension. “But unknown to him, his friend, Darlington Sylvanus detonated the substance, which threw the whole school into confusion, as people scampered for safety while some sustained injuries.

“That at the end of the interrogation, the two suspects were given administrative bail and released unconditionally to report back on Monday, May 27, 2019. “That as part of the investigation, the Police team executed search in the houses of the suspects but nothing incriminating was found.

Furthermore, the team visited the scene and the hospital where three students were receiving medical attention.

“That at the end of the exercise, the team called all the staff and students and assured them of protection and warned them to be law-abiding as police will not spare any effort in dealing with delinquent students.”

N50m endowment for High Chief (Dr.) O.B. Lulu-Briggs Professorial Chair in Geriatric Care at Rivers State University

The O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation has announced a gift of N50 million to endow the High Chief (Dr.) O.B. Lulu-Briggs Distinguished Professorial Chair in Geriatric Care at the Rivers State University.

The announcement was made on Wednesday May 22, 2019 by chairman of the occasion former military president of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd.), GCFR who was represented by General Jones Arogbofa (rtd.) at a special ceremony, ‘A Legacy of Philanthropic Excellence,’ in honor of the Foundation’s grand benefactor, High Chief (Dr.) O.B. More than 9 million Nigerians are aged 60 and above and according to the global age index this number will be over 20 million by 2030.

He said, “Based on income security, health status, education and employment, the index ranked Nigeria as one of the worst nations for older people to live in. We believe this is because there are presently only a handful of institutions working specifically on geriatrics in Nigeria.”

“We are confident that the output from this distinguished chair will contribute to what is still pioneering work needed to secure adequate resources, and to promoting healthy aging.”

Professor Raphael Oruambo the Provost of the College of Medical Sciences, Rivers State University, RSU, represented the Vice Chancellor of RSU, Professor Blessing Didia. Receiving the gift on behalf of Rivers State University, he said it was a revolution in geriatric care in Nigeria and would fund the establishment of a ward dedicated to geriatric care at their teaching hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Today’s disbursement is the fulfillment of that promise.”

The elated entrepreneurs received working capital grants and business equipment including, deep freezers, sewing machines, motor cycles, hair salon equipment, carpentry tools, amongst others.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman praised the honoree, “High Chief (Dr.) O.B.Lulu-Briggs to me was one Nigerian who cut his niche in life through humanitarian service, and invested heavily in others as a show of gratitude to a country that nurtured him from a humble background to one that became a household name. He was exemplary in his disposition to issues, and he was thorough in his business and other engagements. He was kind, generous, and urbane in his dealings and interactions with those he came across from different backgrounds. In her welcome remarks ,Chairman of the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation, Dr. (Mrs.) Seinye O.B. Lulu-Briggs who spoke through her daughter, Mrs. Solate Ovunda-Akarolo said, “We are also using this to signal to our stakeholders the O.B. Lulu-Briggs Foundation’s commitment to carry on his legacy of philanthropic excellence in perpetuity.”

kingi777:
APC, diversity management and political morality-By Emma Agu
https://www.sunnewsonline.com/apc-diversity-management-and-political-morality
One of the paradoxes of the Nigerian State is the pervasive tendency to define justice in very narrow, self-serving terms. This is especially the case when the issue at stake, borders on resource distribution; be it political appointments, distribution of projects or budgetary allocation. The result of this paradox can be found in skewed appointments, denial of equity, lip service to inclusion and diversity; all snowballing into the spectre of unending agitations for restructuring or self determination, that continues to plague the polity.
There is no doubt that the definition of justice has always been problematic. Nevertheless, no matter how justice is defined, it must include notions of equity and fairness. And for justice to make sense within the context of an ethnically plural society such as Nigeria, it ought to be holistically embraced, to capture the totality of the significant and, at times, painful sacrifices and contributions, made by of all the stakeholder groups in an effort to accommodate the “weak”, no matter how that weakness is manifested, be it in academics or resource endowment, to mention just a few.
That is why the convoluted argument that has trailed the jostling for the positions, of principal officers, in the next National Assembly, deserves to be subjected to dispassionate scrutiny and honest resolution if, indeed, we sincerely desire a solution to the challenge of nation-building. One sour point in the argument has been the position of those who insist that the South East does not deserve to head either the Senate or the House of Representatives. Advocates of this position hinge it on the claim that the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC, did not garner enough votes from the zone.
Statistically, that could be correct. Yet, it is an argument that is flawed because it has not considered the weight of each vote that the APC got in the South East. It should never be forgotten that the President was required to emerge through not just the plurality of votes but by achieving a spread determined by scoring 25 percent of votes cast in two-thirds of the states of the Federation. President Buhari met that requirement in Abia, Ebonyi and Imo States; that is, in three out of the five states of the South East. Percentage-wise, that translates to 67 percent success in the South East. When compared that with his performance in the zone in 2015, not only does this translate to a profound improvement in the performance of the APC, it also confers on the President greater legitimacy.
It will amount to a gross understatement to say that that performance did not come by happenstance. As any unbiased watcher of the political dynamics of the South East will readily admit, was the outcome of the doggedness of the APC leaders in the zone; a performance that deserves commendation. Dr. Chris Ngige, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, Dr. Uche Ogar, Hon. T.O.E. Ekechi, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Senator Ngozi Nwaogu, and their compatriots encountered formidable odds, risked stigmatization and suffered physical abuse; all in a relentless effort to give the APC a national character and ensure that the President was not denied the two-thirds requirement in the South East. They succeeded. It is within this context that the disingenuous attempt, by some politicians and commentators, to deny the South East zone the leadership of one of the arms of the National Assembly, should be seen as the height of mischief if not outright disregard for the unity and stability of Nigeria. This is even more repugnant, with the emergence of Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba as one of the top contenders for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
Proponents of the winner-takes all, of ‘might is right,’ line of argument, conveniently ignore the fact that if the winner-takes-all principle was to apply in every competitive situation such as Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, candidates from certain zones may have great difficulty gaining admission into Nigerian universities, to study courses requiring very high scores. But the framers of our Constitution and successive administrations were perceptive enough to eliminate such an extreme position. That is why JAMB scores are lowered for candidates from some states of the Federation. That is the meaning of diversity; the rationale behind Affirmative Action in the United States of America and the essence of the Federal Character Principle in Nigeria. That is why President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the National Assembly should reject the attempt to MARGINALIZE and retire, to political oblivion, one of the historical TRIPODs on which Nigeria’s Federal structure has always rested.
Pray, where are the proponents of exclusion based on electoral performance when JAMB candidates from the South East are denied university admission in order to accommodate their counterparts from other zones? Where are the proponents of electoral performance when, in spite of sterling performance, civil servants from some zones are compelled to mark time at the same level in order accommodate their counterparts from other parts of the country? Why should we not apply the same principle of quota system, federal character and zoning in determining leadership positions in the legislature? When has it become the case that what is good for the goose is not good for the gander?
President Buhari and the leadership of the APC will be making a grave mistake if they succumb to the shenanigans of politicians with dubious nationalistic credentials who have no qualms denying the South East against zone the equity they had demanded, for their zone, in time past. To buttress this point, it is instructive that those elements who, in 2011 swore never to forgive President Goodluck Jonathan, for failing to stop the conspiracy that denied the South West the position of Speaker, are in the forefront of the unholy alliance to thwart the justifiable demand of the South East for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. As events turned out, neither did they forget nor did they forgive both the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan. In fact, some people believe that the Jonathan Presidency ended the very date Tambuwal ascended the throne to the exclusion of the south west. You are left to wonder why those strong voices of equity from the South West have now either gone quiet or are singing a completely different tune under the same moral challenge.
It is annoying when some self-serving politicians try to hoodwink us into accepting that there is no morality or principle in politics; that everything is about expediency. That is correct only for the malevolent characters who have held the polity captive and who manipulate the naivety of the innocent electorate, to foist on the polity a moral regime that neither promotes development nor enthrones social harmony. To such people, they should dust up the Seven Deadly Sins of Humanity, and read about politics without principles, as postulated by the legendary Indian Leader, Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi, whose impact on social and political thought explain the soar away success that India’s democracy has recorded and why today, in spite of a huge population, the country has taken its seat among the world’s tech giants.
It takes some genuine self-examination and concerted pursuit of justice, based on equity and fairness, to succeed in nation-building. That is why, in spite of earlier missteps, President Buhari’s recent assurance that he would run an inclusive administration, is not only reassuring but inspirational.
The point to start is at the National Assembly, the repository of the Sovereign Will of the people. The President should ignore all self-serving gladiators posturing for 2023. Let him rise to the same statesmanship that earned Nelson Mandela, the status of a global icon. Let the South East produce the Speaker of the Ninth House of Representatives. That is justice based on equity and fairness; and that will strengthen the APC in the South East, for future electoral exploits and success

We started in Kwara State Ilorin 2009 when the IJMB admissions started to expand all across the Northern part of Nigeria and ever since we have successfully opened multiple centres in Lagos, Enugu , Oyo , Edo State. with over 750 students admitted through our Programme in 2 years we secure 100% follow up (unlike other institutions who only teach and prepare you for the exams) immediately after your result . We are affiliated with high profiled administrators and professors in University of Ilorin, Kwara State University, University of Ibadan, University of Lagos , Ahmadu bello University, University of Nigeria Nsukka, University of Benin , Ambrose Ali university which guarantee admission slots for our student immediately after their EXAM.

The meaning of IJMB is Interim Joint Matriculation Board:
IJMB is the best and leading advanced level programme in Nigeria. It is a nine month programme that allows interested candidate to study any course in any university of their choice WITHOUT JAMB UTME.
History Of IJMB:
The IJMB programme was established by the The Interim Common Services Agency (ICSA) in 1976 under statute 5 of the Ahmadu Bello University Law, to run the Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) as an alternative ‘A’ level Examination to student or candidate who may wish to seek for undergraduate admission into Ahmadu Bello University and other University.IJMBE is certified by the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) as an advanced level programme for Direct Entry (DE) admission into any university in Nigeria and this makes the IJMBE acceptable in both Federal, State and Private universities in Nigeria. This page is dedicated to tell you everything About Ijmb. Read on.

IJMB IS THE BEST ADMISSION OPTION FOR JAMBITES
IJMB remains the best option and alternative for University admission seekers due to the few numbers of candidates who apply for direct entry (200 level admission) admission in Nigeria unlike the regular 1.5million Jamb UTME(100level) applicants. It is economical and time saving.
You can apply for IJMB and also Jamb UTME at the same time. IJMB result does not expire and can be used for admission application into different university.
The IJMB program was designed to prepare post-secondary school candidates academically, mentally and socially for University education.
The IJMB examination is based on an approved IJMB syllabus which was produced by harmonizing the contents of the syllabus of the former higher school certificate, London GCE, Cambridge A-level examination and the 100 level curriculum of Nigerian University.
IJMB EXAMINATIONS
The IJMBE is a qualifying examination conducted yearly, essentially for Advanced level (A/L) subjects for admission into Nigerian and foreign Universities at 200 levels. In addition, two ordinary level (O/L) subject (English/Mathematics) are also offered equivalent to WASSCE or NECO-O level, for candidate who may be deficient in them.Candidates for the examination are presented through institutions affiliated to the program for the purpose of examination.
IJMB INSTITUTIONS
The institution affiliated to the IJMB program cut across the different strata of tertiary education in Nigeria. They include colleges of arts and sciences established purposely for the IJMBE and remedial studies, colleges of education, polytechnics and Universities.

These institutions are private, state or federal establishments. As at 2013, there 51 institutions spread across Nigeria, affiliated to the IJMB program of which Brainfill academy is one.
The IJMB institutions are saddled with the responsibility of providing facilities and preparing candidates for the examination under the control of the IJMB Governing Board. The yearly IJMB examination has been conducted unfailing since the inception of the IJMBE under the control of the IJMB Governing Board.

Yoruba forests host 1,123 cells of armed Fulani herdsmen--Oodua group

…….says Yoruba rich are being secretly kidnapped, huge ransom paid

Ibadan May 14, 2019 FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLIC RELEASE..There are exactly 1,123 cells belonging to armed Fulani herdsmen mainly in forests and highlands located across Yoruba territories.

The cells are well organized and they appear to network with each other.

The mission of the cells are unknown except that there have been increase in the preponderance of their organization skill.

They appear to have lately adopted martial training in these cells. Some of the Fulani armed herdsmen speak French suggesting the Franco-African origin of some of them.

In a media release on Tuesday, Apapo Oodua Koya, (AOKOYA) said the cells are manned by between 30 to 50 young armed Fulani herdsmen whose focus is kidnapping and rape and the imposition of siege, a state of fear and anomie across Yorubaland.

AOKOYA, a coalition of several Pan Yoruba self-determination groups including Yoruba Nationalist League, (YONL) Association of Yoruba Retired Officers, (AYORO), Federation of Ilaje Peoples, (FEIP), Itsekiri Peoples Alliance, (IPA), Oodua Peoples Congress, (OPC), Oodua Revolutionary Coalition, (OREC), Agbekoya, Oodua Students Alliance, (OSA) and many others said the study was conducted over a period of six months using some of the best intelligence gathering equipment.

It further said that satellite images have been personally submitted to State Governors in the South West and some traditional rulers.

The group said
“We have taken our time to do an intelligence survey using modern equipment and google mapping with elementary satellite imaging to know the number of armed cells established and controlled by the Fulani herdsmen spread across Yoruba territories of Kwara, Kogi, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Osun, Ogun, Ekiti and Itsekiri part of Delta State. Our findings are shocking. There are 1, 123 cells run by armed Fulani militia. The cells are populated with Fulani armed men. Some of them are in military uniforms and in some instances we find young girls cooking for the men”, the release signed by the Secretary for Strategy of the group, United States-based Col Abimbola Sowunmi and Deputy Secretary for Publicity, Mr Ismail Abiodun said.

AOKOYA also said that its intelligence report indicate that many Yoruba rich are being kidnapped in silence.

“We discovered that many Yoruba rich men and women are being kidnapped and they are compelled to pay ransom. It is traditional that many of them fear to speak out and in cases where rape of women are involved, the victims are too traumatised to speak out.

"The Yoruba rich suffer in silence. They are raped. They are so traumatized to speak out. We reveal with pain in our hearts that the proprietor of a very big Petrol Filling station in Yoruband one of the finest Yoruba business woman was kidnapped. She paid a lot of money.

Another woman, Mrs who runs an Industry with speciality in ethanol was kidnapped near Ayede in Ekiti state..She has since relocated to London. AOKOYA representatives have met some of these victims who have given confidential information.

Another very rich woman in Abeikuta was kidnapped late last year on her way to Lagos.

She was kept for two weeks. She paid a huge sum as ransom.

The wife of a prominent Pastor in Lagos was seized in February this year on her way to Akure in Ondo State.

She infact paid 25 million to be free. Students of many of the highbrow private Universities are victims. They know their parents are very rich. They target them and pick them up in towns and on the roads. Their parents pay in silence. The herdsmen have information of resumption dates of these schools and use the opportunity to target the students.

The Fulani herdmen threaten them that their children would be killed if they report to the police.

AOKOYA said students of Afe Babalola University, Babcock and Covenant Universities are prime targets.

"It added that wives of traditional rulers are also targets. They are so scared to report to the authorities.”

In one instance, Yoruba billionaire, Bode Akindele was accosted on Ibadan-Lagos Highway. He managed to escape.

We observe that they operate with intelligence networking with some contacts within the state security services that provide information for them and through an extensive network involving Maiguards.

They go out to mosques on Fridays and churches in Sundays where they target and trail owners of exotic cars to their private homes from where they station agents who act as Okada riders but who in actual fact monitor the movement of these people.
" Its a sophisticated network that has recently succeded in breaking into network of some banks in order to know the rich and trace the addresses provided in those bank details.

There are infact too many instances to be mentioned.

AOKOYA said Denying these facts will not help Yorubaland, the issue is to rise up to the challenge and confront headlong.

AOKOYA said it does not expect the authorities in Yorubaland to accept these reports but that events in the few months ahead will confirm the veracity as the Fulani herdsmen are poised to be on greater rampage.

“They have four strategies that have helped them. The first is that they maintain the purity of the Fulani control of the kidnap ring.

This has its own strength and weakness. It makes it difficult for penetration by the state or the host communities so as not to discover their modus.

On the other hand of its advantage, it nullifies the potential of locals getting involved in kidnapping.

Given the degree of poverty in the land, this is an advantage because the Yoruba youths adopting kidnapping as a means of survival will lead to greater social upheavals in Yorubaland.

The second strategy is that they have access to sophisticacted arms supplied by experts.

These arms are brought to them in dismantled forms, making it difficult for security operatives to discover them in transit.

The third strategy is that they are able to organize intensive training for their members without being discovered. This is the most dangerous aspect.

It will mean that they can engage in military combat and this places them at advantage ahead of innocent and peaceful host communities.

They have contact with some bad eggs in Nigerian security network who supply them with information.

AOKOYA made contacts with police officials who supplied the phone numbers of some of the Fulani herdsmen arrested in the past.

It indicated that they have a strong network with some influential Fulani politicians in the North and are also not far from the Miyetti Allah group.
The forth is that they have full control over the territories they occupy since many Yoruba people have been prevented from going to their farms. The women are also scared of going to farms..This gives the Fulani herdsmen the opportunity to dominate their environment and do what ever they like in those forests which they contunuosly destroy, burn and vanguish.

Our patient is thin because we cannot imagine Yoruba armed men going to Sokoto or Katsina to kidnap their people and occupy their ancestral forests or grassland. The situation in Yorubaland is both an insult and a humiliating embarrassment.

“We did a comprehensive data analysis of the telephone numbers of some of the herdsmen arrested. Some of the Fulani herdsmen arrested have on their phones history of consistent communication with leaders of Miyetti Allah and even some prominent Northern Emirs.

AOKOYA said "We see a great danger ahead. We are worries that these armed groups pose a serious threat to the livelihood of Yoruba people. We fear that there is what is akin to an army of occupation in Yorubaland.

The signs are clear that if there is any crisis in Yorubaland today, there is the possibility that our people will be overwhelmed.

AOKOYA urge Yoruba people all over the world to realise that they can never be protected by the corrupt and villanous Nigerian state.."We have to take the bull by the horn. If not, the massacre of Yoruba people in the face of imminent crisis will be unprecedented.

This report has been edited to preserve many confidential reports some of which have been passed on to some important Yoruba leaders.
