The way I personally understand telomeres.
Is as a coded cap on cell division in our DNA, to prevent the cell from going rogue. A natural protection from cancer.

Every time a cell divides, it's telomeres shorten.
Until it reaches it's cap and the cell self destructs.

The consequences of this though is aging, as getting older is a simple matter of your cells dying without enough new ones being created.

Telomeres are like tiny switches attached to nucleotides in chromosomes. Every living thing has chromosomes, chromosomes determine how the very fact that you and I have thick lips, fat or small phallus, dark or light skin, short or average in height, bust or small breasted.

Chromosomes are like bundles of code that determine how we look . Now they contain these switches known as Telomeres. These telomeres determine the lifespan of every single cell in the body. And a constant to these Telomeres is their very length.

Shortening the length of the telomeres can significantly improve the life span of any given cell In the body
