DACA Convener, Akintunde Hails Gov Abiodun Over Tribunal's Victory The convener of Dapo Abiodun Continuity Agenda (DACA) and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State, Armstrong 'Tope Akintunde has joined progressives members across the globe to celebrate what it termed "a well deserved victory" of Gov Dapo Abiodun at Ogun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Saturday. Armstrong, in a statement made available to journalists in Iperu, Governor's home town on Sunday described the victory as been so sweet coming after the oppositions were already gallivanting over the state and assuring their supporters that what they failed woefully on the field of play during March 18 governorship election to receive, the tribunal would give them through the backdoor. The Iperu born property merchant said that he and his thousands of DACA members who worked day and night mobilising people across the state to support the second term of Gov Abiodun due to his fantastic achievements during the first term knew that the opposition would surely come back from the tribunal with their heads bowed, beaten, batterd and out. He said "we all witnessed the last Governorship election in the state and we all know that Gov Abiodun really deserves to win the second term given his track records during his first four years in office. "I was really concerned when the opposition said they wanted to contest this outright victory because it was a deserving one, fortunately the tribunal has confirmed it again and again that the victory of Gov Abiodun was real and earned. "The oppositions have lost again. This victory is for democracy and of course another source of encouragement to our loving Governor to continue his good works till 2027. "I rejoice with our leader, the governor and my prayer is that the Almighty God will continue to strengthen him to record greater achievements in the state. What is left is for the opposition to join hands with Governor Abiodun to develop the State, anything less is another share waste of time". - Oluseun Joshua, Abeokuta.

Education / ISIS funding: Students demand shutdown of Lafarge company in Nigeria by Ninejaman: 12:18pm On Oct 20, 2022 |
ISIS funding: Students demand shutdown of Lafarge company in Nigeria Nigerian students have demanded the immediate shutdown of the Nigerian branch of Lafarge Cement company located in Ewekoro, Ogun State. The called was sequel to the $778million fine handed down to the French company by the United States Justice Department in Brooklyn has fined Lafarge. The company had pleaded guilty to making payments to terrorists to retain its operations in Syria. The company is said to continue pleading guilty to charges of providing material support to a terrorist organization. The students made their demand in a statement made under the aegis of Coalition of Nigerian Students comprising National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Progressive Students Movement (PSM), and National Association Of Ogun State Students (NAOSS). The statement was signed by NAOSS Global President, Ogunrombi Leke, PSM President, Bestman Okereafor, NANS Deputy Senate President, Ekundina Elvis and NANS Ogun Chairman, Kehinde Damilola Simeon. They called on security a gencies to immediately shutdown the Nigeria branch of Lafarge situated in Ogun State pending the outcome of investigations. The students warned that allowing the company continue operations posed a great to the security of thousands of students in the area. According to them, "we are not unaware of the increasing level of insecurity in the axis housing the company (EWEKORO) ranging from kidnapping, to armed robbery among others, not too long ago Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have reportedly arrested a suspected Boko Haram leader in Abeokuta, Ogun state. "We are particularly concerned about our students in the axis housing the company (EWEKORO) because the same axis is housing an higher institution (DS ADEGBENRO ICT POLY) with thousands of students. "In lieu of this, we are demanding for an immediate shutdown of Lafarge company within the next 72hours from this release , pending the time investigation will be carried out considering how much risk , danger and harm sponsoring a terrorist group could do to Ogun state and Nigeria at large. "We appreciate the company for the jobs created however the security of our constituents remains our top priority. "We are concerned about the fact ISIS presence have been confirmed in Nigeria, yet the news have exposed a LAFARGE branch in another country fully sponsoring terrorist group. "If the company is not shut down at the expiration of our 72hours ultimatum, Nigeria students will be forced to move in our thousands to shut the company down as Nigerian Students in that axis have been living under high apprehension since the news of LAFARGE sponsoring terrorist came out. "For LAFARGE SA and LAFARGE Syria to have agreed and pledged guilty to funding and supporting a notorious terrorist group, what assurance do we have that the company in Nigeria is not doing same, hence the need for an immediate shutdown and investigation. "It is extremely important for security agents to rise up to this task because an injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, we are not unaware that the said terrorists have sophisticated weapons that security agents in Nigeria do not have , this simply means they may decide to go on rampage anytime even as the 2023 general elections is fast approaching. "It is very disheartening that at a time when companies such as DANGOTE have been busy supporting security agents with mobility and logistics basically to combat crimes across the country , another is busy sponsoring terrorists, it is very disturbing and calls for immediate action". 1 Like

While addressing over 5,000 coordinators of the group in state at Iperu over the weekend, the Convener disclosed that Gov Dapo Abiodun has done fantastically well in the sectors of the economy such that his re-election was already becoming a walk over. Armstrong said "DACA is established to give solid back up for our great party APC, and just recently, the national secretariat of our party gave us recognition as the one of the party's support groups. "Obviously, we are out to ensure that Gov Dapo Abiodun is returned to continue his good works. From Ogun East to Ogun West and Central, the infrastructural development is commendable and you really don't disband a winning team. So, we are on ground to mobilise at least 200,000 votes for the return of Gov Abiodun and of course all party's candidates, including our father, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, our next president by the grace of God". To get this job done, Armstrong said the support group has over 10,000 Coordinators from the state to the local government, provided campaign materials such as branded shirts and caps in their thousands, with several cartons of noodles, spaghetti among other goodies and logistics to ensure an hitch free operation. After distributing the campaign materials to the Coordinators at the programme, Armstrong urged them to go back to their various local governments and wards and begin to mobilise for the success of the party as 2023 general elections inch closer. Health / Alleged ₦100M Fraud: FMC Abeokuta Refutes Claim, Issues 72-hour Ultimatum To NGO by Ninejaman: 2:37pm On Sep 15, 2022 |
Alleged ₦100M Fraud: FMC Abeokuta refutes claim, issues 72-hour ultimatum to NGO The management of Federal Medical Centre (FMC) at Idi-aba in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has refuted allegations of N100m fraud levelled against it's Medical Director, Prof. Adéwálé Musa-Olomu and tow Deputy Directors. The centre also issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) to retract the said or face litigation. It will be recalled that CACOL had petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), claiming alleged diversion of ₦100m compensation funds meant for the Ajibayo villagers, whose lands were acquired for the proposed University of Medicine and Medical Sciences. The contents of the petition, which among other things alleged “failure to show due process in the financial management of the Centre” were published by some bloggers, without recourse to establishing their veracity. The Head, Public Relations and Information, Mr. Segun Orisajo, disclosed in a statement on Thursday that the centre viewed the CACOL’s allegations as laughable, charade, frivolous and smacks of desperate attempts by some disgruntled elements to malign the cherished and jealously guarded character of officers so named in the petition. He said, "the management would ordinarily have ignored the petition and the subsequent sponsored publications for lack of substance but on the other hand chose to set the records straight for the benefit of numerous Nigerians who believed in the integrity, godly virtues, transparency and impeccable character of the individuals mentioned in the publications. "Contrary to the make-belief spurious allegations by the CACOL, due process was indeed strictly followed in all financial issues surrounding the payment of compensation to the affected Ajibayo villagers about two years ago. "For the avoidance of doubts, the Ogun State Bureau of Lands and Survey and Ministry of Agriculture supervised the presentation of Cheques to the Ajibayo beneficiaries in the full glare of Print and Electronic media practitioners . Substantial evidences abound to substantiate this statement". Speaking in the same vein, the Secretary to the Heads of Ajibayo Village and environs, Mr. Taiwo Olukunle Abdul Quadir, dismissed the allegations of impropriety being leveled against the Medical Director and two of his directors. The secretary described the petition and publications as “malicious action with the mission to blackmail the good name of the Medical Director and his subordinates. According to him, "I see this move as a regrettable act of rewarding diligence, truthfulness and transparency of the Medical Director who organised the presentation of cheques to all of us in an elaborate occasion supervised by the relevant Ministry and Agency in Ogun State with the full Media coverage. Nothing was shady in the whole exercise", Mr Quadir submitted. The management has therefore urged members of the public to disregard the petition and publications as concocted falsehood, fallacious, baseless, fabricated lies and far from the truth. Similarly, the management has warned individuals and groups who are behind the latest ignominious act to find something worthwhile doing rather than engaging in the fruitless race of shadow chasing.

Speaking on his House of Representatives race, the Covenant University graduate of Policy and Strategic Studies and an investment guru said "let me first confirm that due to the call from my good people of this three local governments of Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu North-East and Odogbolu, I have decided to heed their call and offer to represent them at the House of Representatives, Abuja come 2023, yes next year by God's grace. "This is definitely going to be on the platform of our great party, APC. We have been consulting with leaders and other opinion moulders across the three local governments and the response has been quite massive and encouraging. They have seen in me the passion, the exposure and the capability to make a huge difference in this federal constituency and they have all pledged their support. "They knew that yes I may be shuttling between Nigeria and US to attend to my business but I have always identify with the people sharing in their pain and disappointment. So, it is an ambition being propelled by the people. Subomi Balogun, quintessential entrepreneur, philanthropist @ 88 By Emefu Ibe, Abuja The assertion that Nigeria is a blessed nation, is a truism of monumental dimensions. And in spite of the disparaging acts of a few charlatans across disciplines in the geo-polity, there still abounds in the land, men of character and value, the thought of whose principles and actions ignite hope. These symbols of greatness have by their deeds across time, reverently and consistently lifted the banners of genuine brotherhood, business integrity, dexterity, true statesmanship, exemplary industry, perseverance, and every other value of importance. And by a mixture of sheer grit and hard work, while steering their business brands, they have become creators of employment, bastions of treasured values, crusaders of sustainability and worthy legacies, incubators of financial substances, as well as society’s solid standard references for success and notable history makers. In this pack is the cerebral entrepreneur, a rare gem with panache, Christian with infectious value system, and the possessor of many positively inspiring titles – Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun. Call him a symbol of the true Nigerian dream, and you would be stating the obvious. That dream encapsulates warm relationship with and accommodation for people of other ethnicities, religions and cultural values, patriotism and visioning, - vital ingredient in the founding and nurturing of enterprises, as well as the spirit of altruism and help for others in need. In all these, the beloved Otunba has an impressive record. Many stories of him in the public space are tonics for motivation, for embedded in them are the lessons of dexterity, doggedness and commitment. A typical example is the story of the quest to obtain a banking license for the First City Monument Bank (FCMB), which today has become a premium banking brand. “What I did at that time was unheard of in this country, for one individual to say he single-handedly wanted to establish a bank”, as against the statutory requirement for the bank promoter to have a foreign partner, which Otunba Balogun did not have. “But I was inspired by my God through the mouth of a 9-year-old son of mine. We were praying and the young boy went to his mother and said, ‘I just pity Daddy. Why can’t he go and start his own bank, instead of wanting to be the Chief Executive of somebody else’s bank?” In obeying that submission however, Otunba Balogun came face to face with hurdles, which without vision, commitment and the help of God, would have overwhelmed him. In retrospect, he said: “it was Alhaji Otiti and the former Vice President, late Dr Alex Ekweme, who were used directly by God to assist me in doing what many people thought was impossible. In the case of Otiti, he was CBN deputy governor and someone in the Central Bank just mentioned it to me that ‘we cannot give you a license because you don’t have a technical partner’. You know my reply? I said, “God is my partner”. Though Otiti had reassured him by saying, “Subomi don’t worry, the CBN governor and I would arrange something provisionally, which will enable you run that bank and later, look for a foreign technical partner”, it did not happen exactly that way. Here again, you cannot but agree that divinity was at work for him, ensuring the opening of another door upon the closing of one. Rather than Otiti, it was former Vice President, now late Chief Alex Ekwueme, who had been a friend well before the civil war, that God positioned for him and used. Balogun and his wife just resolved to ‘waylay’ Ekwueme in church. Hear the world class banker “At the Cathedral Church, my wife and I planned that when Alex was being led out that I would grab his cloth and my wife would grab that of his wife. When we made the moves, the security people with them thought something was wrong with us, but Alex looked back and said,’’Subomi, Bimbola, what is happening?’’. “Do you know what I told him? I said, ‘Mr. Vice President, why are you not giving me a license?’ So, Alex said we should come to see him, and he assured me that the following Thursday, I would get my license. By 3 pm of that Thursday, a minister phoned me, and he said ‘Egbon (Big Brother), congratulations, the Vice President said your license has been approved’. True friendship, across ethnic lines had spoken, a friendship that had taken strong roots long before Otunba’s moment of need. It was a clear case of one good turn deserving another, which lessons would become more obvious. Recalled from the point of view of Otunba Balogun himself: “The first house I built in my life in Apapa, Alex had the next building to mine. As soon as the war started, some pool players took over the house and were playing pools there. They would be there until midnight, but in wanting to protect my own house from being burgled by those people, I arranged for the police to evacuate them. And having done that, I renovated the house and rented it out to a lady from the East and I was receiving the rent. When the war ended, Alex Ekwueme returned to Lagos and came to see me. After the exchange of pleasantries, I went to my room and brought out a big envelope.” Otunba Balogun narrated: “In those days, we didn’t use cheques much, it was all cash. So, I gave him the money. I told him I renovated his house, rented it out and this is the rent I collected. Dr Alex Ekwueme looked at me, he could not believe it. All he could mutter was “Mike, I am grateful”. It is the kind of reciprocity that only men of integrity are made of. It can be imagined what could have happened, if Otunba had not before then, shown himself trustworthy. Perhaps, his aspiration to birth a bank would have remained a pipe dream. On the other hand, having been tested, he became trusted, and at the point he needed help, to establish his own bank, the help came readily and easily. Today, several other companies have sprouted from the brand, and they include: FCMB Group Plc, subsidiaries such as First City Monument Bank (FCMB), CSL Stockbrokers, FCMB Capital Markets, First City Asset Management Limited (FCAM), FCMB Microfinance Bank and FCMB UK. There are also, FCMB Pensions Limited and FCMB Trustees Limited. There is more to the life of this man to demonstrate his ever willingness to be of service. For example, in a situation where many still tend to cause divisions, using religious inclination, Otunba Balogun, has by his philanthropy, not only blurred the line, but obliterated it. He gives to the Jew as much as he does to the Gentile. So much, he had taken it upon himself to invest in the spiritual growth of Christians in his hometown, through an annual retreat and many more. Interestingly, this retreat also accommodates Muslims. What is the essence? The objective is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, worship the Almighty God, touch, and impact humanity. Why not, when he was made the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians, even when his mother was the Iyasuna of Muslims there, and he has continued to enjoy the prayers and well wishes of all and sundry. “If God singled me out and made me what I am, who am I? It is in appreciation of the unique endowment the good Lord made to me that I do whatever I do. I am not the only Ijebu to be a lawyer, I am not the only Ijebu to be a banker, I am not the only Ijebu to be made Otunba, I am not the only Ijebu to be anything. There are all sorts of birds flying in the air, but the Eagle is the king of all birds”, Baba, as he is fondly called by many around him, enthused. He is Otunba, and further, they decided also to make him the Olori Omo Oba (the head of all the king’s children) and yet, the Asiwaju of Ijebu Christians as well as the Olori Ebi of the Arojojoye Ruling House in Ijebu Ode, of Ogun State. That town is also host of the multi-billion Naira Otunba Tunwase Paediatric Centre which he recently gave out as a total gift, to the University of Ibadan and the University College Hospital (UCH), both in Ibadan. This is aside regular donations and lending support to worthy courses far and wide which altogether, continually proclaim the kindheartedness of this true symbol of a classic Nigerian brand. “I am always joyous to do good and to have people around me, wherever you come from. And the good Lord has always been faithful to me”. Otunba Balogun also proves that people do not always hit it big early in their careers but should see each modest stage in life as a step to something greater in the future. His immediate job before jetting out of the country for the proverbial golden fleece was as a classroom teacher. And even when he was done with schooling in the United Kingdom, he did not allow the flash lifestyle there, tie him down. Many other jobs he landed had enough pecks to keep him hooked, but he was persuaded enough to give to each, only what was necessary. Such included the engagement at the Western Region’s Ministry of Justice, where he was a Crown Counsel and later, a Parliamentary Counsel, at the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank, a dream workplace, for many young Nigerians then and also at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the famous World Bank, and its subsidiary, -the International Finance Corporation (IFC) both in Washington DC. Armed with a bigger vision of himself and tomorrow, he promptly returned to the country, and began to explore business ownership options. His rewards and recognitions have come in quantum– profit for investments, commendation for good works, good name around town, and fulfilment in life. But the icing is the joining the class of distinguished Nigerians, bestowed with the prestigious national honour of Commander of the Officer of the Niger (CON). For being a true symbol of the Nigerian dream, Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun deserves all the accolades he is getting across globe. All men of goodwill obviously doff their hats today, for this rare gift of a man and chorus for him, the prayer of many more days in the land of the living, in good health of body, of mind and of the soul. Nothing less can suffice as birthday gift for the billionaire with panache, as this architect of history, Otunba Balogun, turns 88 this month. END

Politics / Ex-Rep member, Abudu-Balogun hails Buhari for signing new Electoral Act by Ninejaman: 9:51pm On Feb 25, 2022 |
Ex-Rep member, Abudu-Balogun hails Buhari for signing new Electoral Act A former member of House of Representatives, Hon Abiodun Abudu- Balogun, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2021 into Law. The ex-lawmaker expressed the belief that the Law will deepen Nigeria's democracy, with maximum benefit to the citizens. Hon. Abudu-Balogun represented Ijebu-North, Ijebu East and Ogun Waterside Federal Constituency during the 7th Assembly. The All Progressives Congress(APC) chieftain in Ogun State equally commended the National Assembly for a job well-done, recalling that he was part of the Electoral Amendment process while serving in thebHouse of Representatives from 2011-2015. He appreciated Civil Society Organisation (CSO's), the press and pro-democracy activists for their contributions to this great feat in Nigeria's democratic development. President Buhari signed the Bill in the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, on Friday with Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo; President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila in attendance. In his lengthy address, Buhari said he received inputs from relevant ministries, departments and agencies of government in accordance with established tradition after careful and thorough reviews of the Bill and its implications to the nation's democratic processes. He said: “It is gratifying to note that the current Bill comes with a great deal of improvement from the previous Electoral Bill 2021. There are salient and praiseworthy provisions that could positively revolutionise elections in Nigeria through the introduction of new technological innovations. These innovations would guarantee the constitutional rights of citizens to vote and to do so effectively. “The Bill would also improve and engender clarity, effectiveness and transparency of the election process, as well as reduce to the barest minimum incidences of acrimony arising from dissatisfied candidates and political parties. “These commendable efforts are in line with our policy to bequeath posterity and landmark legal framework that paves the way for credible and sound electoral process that we would all be proud of. “Distinguished Senators and Honourable Members of the National Assembly, from the review it is my perspective that the substance of the Bill is both reformative and progressive. I am making this bold declaration because I foresee the great potentials of the Bill. Worthy of note include the democratic efficacy of the Bill with particular reference to sections 3, 9(2), 34, 41, 47, 84(9), (10) and (11) among others. “This, however, cannot be said about one provision as contained in the proposed Bill, which provision constitutes fundamental defect, as it is in conflict with extant constitutional provisions. “Section 84 (12) constitutes a disenfranchisement of serving political office holders from voting or being voted for at Conventions or Congresses of any political party, for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election in cases where it holds earlier than 30 days to the National Election. The section provides as follows: “No political appointee at any level shall be voting delegate or be voted for at the Convention or Congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election”. “This provision has introduced qualification and disqualification criteria that ultra vires the Constitution by way of importing blanket restriction and disqualification to serving political office holders of which they are constitutionally accorded protection. “The practical application of section 84(12) of the Electoral Bill, 2022 will, if assented to, by operation of law, subject serving political office holders to inhibitions and restrictions referred to under section 40 and 42 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). “It is imperative to note that the only constitutional expectation placed on serving political office holders that qualify, by extension as public officers within the context of the constitution is resignation, withdrawal or retirement at least 30 days before the date of the election. “Hence, it will be stretching things beyond the constitutional limit to import extraneous restriction into the constitution on account of practical application of section 84(12) of the bill where political parties’ conventions and congresses were to hold earlier than 30 days to the election. “Arising from the foregoing, with particular regards to the benefits ofbthe Bill, industry, time, resources and energy committed in its passage, I hereby assent to the Bill and request the Nationally Assembly to consider immediate amendments that will bring the Bill in tune with constitutionality by way of deleting section 84(12) accordingly.” |

Education / Stakeholders advocate proper parenting to curb social vices by Ninejaman: 9:04am On Feb 25, 2022 |
Stakeholders advocate proper parenting to curb social vices Stakeholders have advocated for proper parenting as a way to urgently curb the spate of anti-social behaviours being recorded in the country of late. According to them, parents have a huge responsibility of moulding their children and wards, hence the need for them to take proper monitoring of their growing up. These formed parts of the positions of stakeholders at a seminar organised by Dolapo's Platform entitled, “Teen Focus Africa”, held at the Sacred Heart Catholic College, Ibara, Abeokuta, Ogun State. The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Kolawole Salako highlighted the importance of mentoring, urging everyone to take responsibility. He cautioned parents and guardians to not to jettison the idea of paying attention to the behavioural patterns of their children and wards. According to him, this should start from childhood, stressing that parents and guardians should be able to quickly discern positive or negative changes noticed in the behaviour of their children and wards. Salako mentioned the need for teachers in primary and secondary schools to work on the children’s strengths and weaknesses for them to grow up properly. Also speaking at the occasion, a Professor of Communication Art from the Federal University of Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, Jendele Hungbo, blamed money, booze and sex as some of the things that appear to preoccupy the minds of youths these days, saying such should be duly regulated in a sane society. On his part, Mr. Abiodun Sherif of the Public Relations department, Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, urged participants to allow destiny unravel itself, warning youths to avoid cutting corners in whatever they do. In his remarks, the Founder of Golden Goose Foundation and Dolapo's Platform, Mr. Bright Adesina, said the seminar was meant to emulate the lives of people that had reached the peak of their careers by helping today’s youths become future leaders.
