Never said that @d bolded

helovesme:

I'm sure the other mothers that told the lady (even before I posted) to reduce the scoops of formula as they also think that's what's responsible for the constipation are not feeding their babies with aptamil so this isn't "an aptamil is the best" debate
Health / Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by Nita2013: 5:13pm On Jan 29, 2016
Hahahahah as regards d 1st bolded

D "cheap brand" like u put it constipates some children too so it doesn't follow that because it contains a lower percentage of composition that's y a child takin it is not constipated.

D way u swear by aptamil isn't bad. But my dear some mums no wan use ear hear dat name as well and swears by their own baby's formula.

If a child takes a particular formula and is constipated, like my pead will say, change to another formula until u see d one that suits d baby instead of goin against d direction on d tin.

But like I always say "to each his own" and I kno no mum would want to hurt her baby thus every mum does what they feel is best.

helovesme:

big fat lie wink

i live in a country where everything about a child is well monitored.

my health visitor (that visits my baby at home to check on him and ensure he is well and hitting all his milestones) is fully aware/advised on reducing the ratio of water to the formula as she said its one of the main reasons why some babies are constipated.

the cheaper brand you switched to will definitely contain a lower percentage of whatever composition when compared with the high end brands which is why your baby wasn't constipated even though you stuck to the guidelines on the team.

my baby is on Aptamil. sticking to the Aptamil's suggested scoops leaves him constipated - i have tried this twice.

My dear I won't attribute d patches on ur baby's face to allergy because my baby had same patches all over his body from 4 to 8weeks. His pead said I should let it be and it would go on its own but I just could not so a friend adviced I use nizoral shampoo on him and that was d magic. After 2 days I saw d difference. Yorubas call d skin stuff eela and different mums used different things that worked on their baby. I used d nizoral on him morning and evening, rub on his body and head, let it dry for 3-5minutes and bathe him with d one on his body but avoided d eye area. After 5days I used once daily for another 5days and that was d end of patches.

For one to kno if a child has allergy, u need to see an allergist and not dermatologist.

Also u stated ur baby is 6weeks old and sleeps tru out d night after been fed formula. Except I m reading ur message wrongly pls a 6weeks old baby is too small to sleep all tru d night without eating. Formula fed baby's should be fed every 4hrs and EBF baby's should be fed every 3hrs. So pls if u feed ur baby formula pls give ur baby additional formula or breastmilk. in 4hrs even if it's in d middle of d night.

Also don't remember if u r d one that talked about measurement of formula. Pls stick to what is written on d can. If ur baby is constipated due to that, kindly change to another formula that won't make ur baby constipated. Cheers

Hafsat24:

He's 6weeks..I was on EBF but not anymore..thing is he can suck for 2hrs and still not be satisfied..i give him the formula only twice a day..i try my best to breastfeed all through inbetween..true to your words..when I give formula at night he sleeps all through till morning grin
Truth be told I'm not happy giving formula undecided..I wanted EBF..in all this he's still not chubby yet and my neighbour who keeps ringing it in me ears that he's too skinny and I should go see a doc isn't helping matters

Please mama for us all

‪#‎Vaginal‬ ‪#‎Douching‬: ‪#‎Helpful‬ or ‪#‎Harmful‬? ‪#‎Facts‬ and ‪#‎Fallacies‬
‪#‎Introduction‬
The practice of douching is common in some clime while it is completely alien in some. For some women, this will be the first time of hearing about the term, while for some they might have a vague idea. Douching is very common in westernized world, matter of fact, an estimated 20% to 40% of American women between ages 15 and 44 say they use a vaginal douche.

Studies showed that higher rates are seen among teens especially African-American and Hispanic women. Majority of women who indulge in this practice believe that besides making them feel fresher, it also helps get rid of unpleasant odors, wash away menstrual blood after their period, avoid getting sexually transmitted diseases, and prevent a pregnancy after intercourse. However it is important to note, “All these claims are not evidence based.

Majority of renowned health experts advise against douching and believe it is not effective for any of these purposes mentioned above. On the contrary douching can actually increase the risk of infections, pregnancy complications, and other health problems.

#‎What‬ is douching?
The word ''douche'' is French in origin and it means “to wash'' or ‘‘soak.’ This is the practice of washing the vagina, usually with a mixture of water and vinegar. Douches, commonly sold in drugstores and supermarkets contain antiseptics and fragrances. This comes in a bottle or bag and is sprayed through a tube upward into the vagina.

#What are the advantages if any of douching?
To the users, they say douching makes them feel cleaner. However there is, though, very little scientific evidence of benefit from douching. The rare positive research that does exist often has a downside. One study found that douching during the six months before pregnancy reduced the risk of preterm delivery. However, in that same study, douching during pregnancy was linked to an increased risk of preterm birth. So, overall, both cancels out.

#What are the disadvantages of douching?
Based on research findings, the overall risks of douching far outweigh the benefits. Here are just a few of the problems linked to douching:
1• Vaginal infections (bacterial vaginosis). Douching upsets the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina (called vaginal flora). These changes make the environment more favorable for the growth of bacteria that cause infection. Studies have found that women who stopped douching were less likely to have bacterial vaginosis. Having bacterial vaginosis can increase the risk of preterm labor and endometriosis.

2• Pelvic inflammatory disease Research has found that women who douche may have a 73% higher risk of getting PID.

3• Pregnancy complications. Women who douche more than once a week have more difficulty getting pregnant than those who don't douche. Douching may also increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy by as much as 76%. With an ectopic pregnancy, the embryo implants outside the uterus. The more a woman douches, the greater the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy.

4• Cervical cancer . Douching at least once a week has been linked to a possible increased chance of developing cervical cancer

‪#‎So‬ Should a woman douche?
According to health experts, including those at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), you should avoid douching. They generally advised that having some vaginal odor is normal.

However, if you notice a very strong odor, it could be a sign of infection. The acidity of the vagina will naturally control bacteria, and simply washing the vagina with warm water and mild soap is enough to keep clean.

Thanks dear. I will

babythug:
@Nita2013 - Please ask your sister to exercise her faith over both children but for now she should please avoid the foods not to be eaten. They will outgrow the allergies anyway! i'm just imagining the poor baby itching and itching. I had allergies too and today thankfully they're mostly gone.

Allergies can be deadly if not well managed so she should please spend a lot of time praying for healing but avoid the avoidables for now!

Cheers

I av 2 nephews that are allegic to milk too. R u sure he can still take breast milk? because my SIL had to stop breastfeeding at 2months when they found out he had milk allergy (as adviced by d doctor). Also u should check well cos children with milk allergy r allergic to many food. My nephew does not eat anything containing milk, egg or oil. His fish and meat r baked instead of fried. He takes sausages and some other food. He uses barbecue sause to eat Eba cos he can't use soup except blank vegetable soup. He can't take anything with nuts.

My SIL explained how this was diagnosed (ie food he was allergic to). He was taken to. D hospital, placed nakeddd on d bed and different kinds of food was placed on his body. After some minutes, they cleard his body removing each food crumb one after d other. D ones he was allergic too created a spot/patch on his body and d ones his body accepted didn't create any patch/spot. So she wrote down everything and followed strictly till date. He is 5yrs now though d doc said he would outgrow it with time. Also she uses cetaphil liquid soap and moisturising cream for him.

My 2nd nephew(sister's son) has it as well and he is 8yrs now. His mum refused to follow doctors rule and gives him all kinds of food. She says God did not create her son not to eat normal food. But my dear u need to see when this boy has break out, he would scratch until he has sores but after somedays everything would disappear. But my sis keeps feeding him with all kinds of meal. His breakout comes and goes as well but not as often as b4.

I would advice u see an allergists/ dermatologist not just a pediatrician. Especially cos of d breastmilk u r still feeding him with and u can also read up online.

Above all keep praying for ur LO so God will heal him.

lamdec:

Right now, expressing isn't an option, cos I go to work, I leave home 5.30 every morning and get back home around 7pm, most times I am overly exhausted. I usually go to his creche to breastfed him twice daily but nowadays whenever I go, he is not even in the mood for breastmilk. I will ask about the cod liver oil....I didn't know I can add palm oil, I was thinking of adding olive oil.

FexCathy as regards formula for infants, it really depends on d baby and ur pocket. This is because some babies react to some formula.

As regards aptamil, it's a UK based formula and according to health Professionals in d UK, amongst all other formula it's d closest to breastmilk cos of some nutritional content. U can't see aptamil in US shops (at least I av never seen maybe others av seen).

In d US, similac, enfamil, gerber and d likes r termed best as well cos of d nutritional contents.

In Nigeria, Nan is termed best (it's d most recommended by health professionals).

So my dear it actually depends. If u try aptamil and ur baby doesn't react to it, then u can continue but pls follow d instructions written on d container.

Also not everyone can afford these milk cos they r pricey in naija. So some pple just stick to Nan and d likes. My son started with similac but had to change to aptamil when I started buyin similac for 12k and he finishes it in one week. Told my hubby it was suicide mission to spend 12k every week on formula alone. I almost changed to Nan when getting stage 2 aptamil was like searchin for a needle inside grass in darkness but was lucky to get someone comin from d UK thus stocked up d quantity he ll use till 1yr 6months.

I hope my lengthy explanation helped

My dear that's y I used d word "probably". Thank God u said d bolded. A mother cannot say because her child has been coughin for 2days, that's means d bolded. Only d hospital can diagnose that. All the times I took my son to d hospital for cough or cattarh, they examine him and tell me to go back home and wait it out. Honestly it's not easy especially d cough at 9t but at d end it goes on its own.

Take for eg Ibuprofen is sold over d counter in UK, that doesn't mean that a slight headache requires one to take ibruprofen.

Same goes for when a child is running temperature, u don't just administer paracetamol or tylenol. U do d needful by reducin d clothes on d baby's body, do sponge bath b4 even thinking of paracetamol then hospital if symptoms persists.

Pls mamas kindly follow "ask the paediatricians" on fb. So u can ask them questions. It's really educating.

helovesme:

Erm. . No doctor or peadictrian in the UK will tell you to give a baby vitamin C supplements. They won't even prescribe it. You cannot even find vitamin C syrup for babies sold OTC here. If in doubt, go to boots and co or check online and confirm if they are sold.

I'm amazed when I read/hear mum giving their babies abidec and co.

Even the wellman multivitamin syrup sold OTC is only for babies 4 months plus.

The fact is if a baby is suffering from a bad case of congested chest/nose as a result of cough/cold, the baby is admitted with a tube passed into the body to extract all the mucus - fact! (My baby was almost made to face this. I was asked to monitor him for another 24 hours to see if he gets any better and if not, I should bring him in but thank God, with some home remedies, he gradually recovered).

If it's a slightly mild case which has been ongoing for at least 7 days, then antibiotics are prescribed.

It is sold over d counter does not make it ok to give an infant cough syrup. I kno too well that in d UK, no pead will advice u to give an infant cough syrup b4 d child is examined. In d UK, when u take an infant to d hospital cos of cough, they examine d child 1st and if everything is ok d pead tells d mum to just give warm water to drink and probably vit C cos cough syrup will not cure d cough. (atleast this I kno is obtainable in d Uk from experience and with a UK practising pead in d house)

helovesme:

erm. . . if cough syrups are bad and not advisable for infants older than 3 months , then why do Boots as well as other top pharmcies in the entire United Kingdom sell them as over the counter medcine (not prescription oh)

http://www.boots.com/en/Tixylix-Baby-Syrup-3-months-100ml_1660/

http://www.lloydspharmacy.com/en/tixylix-toddler-syrup-100ml-14221

the united kingdom that i know, there is very strict regulation and control on medcines. if any drug poses any risk to an adult, how much more a baby, it wont be available OTC but on doctor's precription only which isnt the case with this cough syrup

Cough syrup is not advisable for infants. This has been said lots of times here. If it bothers d mum so much, she should take d child to d hospital and after they check and see that everything is ok, they ll only tell d mum to take d baby back home.

Cough/ Cattarh av a cycle of 10days after which it's advisable to seek medical help. I know it's not easy to watch ur baby cough helplessly but if d mum is patient enough she ll see that it will go but if d cough persists after 10days then hospital it is.

@mumsgirl27 pls continue with d vit C and cover ur baby well too. Take care of his/her feeding items if u r not doing only breastfeeding. If u can't stand d cough, pls go to d hospital and don't self medicate. Don't worry ur LO will be fine

helovesme:

get her cough syrup for babies asap before it gets any worse.

she's over 3 months so its safe for her to use it.

however, stop using it once the cough stops.

Its not stated the way she said it, she wrote her interpretation of what is actually stated on d pack.

Kimoni:

Really?? Could you pls take a pic of where this is written on your pack? Looks like there are several different packs of golden morn out there in the market.

Mine still carried the usual "golden morn is not an infant cereal" on the right hand side of the pack and "suggested serving for 9-13 years" written on the left side. I couldn't find that bolded statement of yours anywhere on my pack. Thnks

Just read it. That was like 3years ago. I m sure there is a reason they removed d part stating age because all d golden morn pack I av seen now has no age of 3 specified.

Kimoni:

This golden morn issue trended on NL some years back and Nestle themselves had to come and clarify. Pls note, It is not good for ages 3 years and below.

The packet used to carry this warning sign some years back but Nestle Naija has since modified their pack, hence the confusion amongst Nigerians.

Addition: an average crèche in Abuja is quiet pricey especially if she will be stayin inside main Abuja town.

My dear I bought d quantity that would last my son from birth till he ll stop using diapers and shipped down to naija alongside other things. I have never seen it in Abuja but a friend in lag said she saw it in lag. Honestly I m in love with it cos of d way it absorbs d urine.

shndy:

Wow, mothers where u buying ur swaddlers? I stopped using it wen my baby moved to size3, couldn't get it.
I love loved it, it's d best av used so far, followed by d pampers newbaby (UK n Germany). My baby uses it overnight and it was never soggy, absorbed pretty well. No rashes and it never left a mark on him even on days wen I dint rub vaseline on d bum.

Yeah some mamas review on it is not positive but I av useed it since birth. And yes he pees less now unlike b4 when we were using 5 daily.

I used huggies snug and dry. One good thing about it was that it has better grip than pampers swaddlers but didn't absorb d pee well. Only twice pee and d diaper will be saggy. But I loved d grip.

Used pampers premium too cos I got like 4 as a gift and absolutely loved it

Onegai:

Thanks. I've used Pampers Swaddlers (disliked them so much I didn't bother using it up grin). However I'm surprised you're using just 3 per day: that their dri-weave on the diaper tends to leave marks or pull soft skin if left on for long (I and a few other mums had that experience and yeah, it was the U.S. manufactured ones we bought). Since your boy is. using size 4, im assuming he's passed the stage when he's constantly peeing but pees more volume but less. often, right?

Any other mamas share their diapering experiences? A couple of my friends are doing research on what to buy for their babies next year and I promised them I'd give unbiased answers for a lot of methods and brands. Thanks.

Golden morn can be given from 1yr and above. I read severally that it's from 3yrs but that's not true because it's not stated on d pack. I had to read d write up on d pack b4 buying and it states "Golden Morn is not an infant cereal" d question u may ask is who is an infant?

Different explanations av come up as to who an infant is. Some say 1month to 12months. Others say 1month to 24months. Some say when a child starts walking. So it actually depends. I started givin my son golden morn at 14months and watched how he took it and if he reacted. He took it well without any reactions so I continued.

I guess it depends on d kind of diaper. My son uses pampers swaddlers size 4 with 144 in a carton. He uses maximum of 3 a day that's only if he poops during d day or over drinks water. Otherwise he uses 2 daily because it's 12hours protection. D diaper absorbs d urine so well that one would wonder how many times he actually urinated.

Goin by my calculations he uses one carton in 6-8weeks. He has never had diaper rash. I use blue seal vaseline as d protective cream on his butt.

Onegai:
Thanks mama's. The reason I'm asking is that they recommend changing diapers often, like 6 times a day. This is to avoid diaper rash and having to buy treatment creams which are pricey. But if you can buy disposables for N4000 per month, it should be easy to change that often, right?

I don't kno d myth behind drinkin warm water after giving birth. That's d usual practice in naija cos abroad they give u water with lots of ice to drink/chew after giving birth.

I didn't sit on hot towel though sat on warm water (sitz bath) for 3weeks I think.

I meant in general terms not particularly because d baby is stoolin. She has been asked how old her baby is. My son used minimum of 8 soiled diapers a day from birth till like 2months + and was told by his Paed that it is absolutely normal.

Onegai has also asked some important questions as regards d stooling. She can't just give her baby ORS because d baby poops frequently because there will be effect to that.

Generally (u can also ask ur baby's paed) it is not advisable to feed a baby on demand especially after establishing that d baby is getting enough milk (either EBF of Formula). It is advisable to establish a feeding pattern.

She can also go on fb and "Ask d paediatricians" so they can explain better to her.

mitche15:
i dont think there should be a feeding pattern, feed when the baby is hungry, if the baby is stooling alot, naturally she will be hungry and dehydrated, or have u even thot of the fact that she might not be satisfied with just breastmilk? how old is ur baby?
Health / Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by Nita2013: 10:03am On Oct 29, 2015
Hello dear, I don't think u should be feeding ur baby every 30minutes. That's definitely too much and she won't get enough sleep like u AV stated neither will u get enough rest during d day. Pls try and establish a feeding pattern say like every 2-3hrs.

Yes at 1st it will be difficult because she is now use to every 30mins feeding but just increase d timing gradually. U can start by adding 15mins until u get to d 2-3hrs timing.

Thanks dear

MiracleMum:

The smallest flask in the image didnt keep water hot up to 2 hours but the others did for 2 days, so i just guessed its because that one is stainless and not colour coated like others. I use the food flask there, next to the stainless for her pap and it keeps it fresh and hot.

Ok dear thanks. Actually thought u were talking about all those things we read about radioactive stuff in microwave. Pls send d picture of d flask.

lovinam:
Are u sure we are talking about the same flask? This one can only take like 50cl water( rough estimate) My baby uses the smallest size which I belive is ok for your baby. I'm just saying rather than expose his food like that and you don't know how they warm and with what. Just get the flask, my baby takes one homemade meal and second meal is cereal.
