EducationFG To Employ 500,000 New Teachers - Minister by Nnadigoodluck(op): 7:06pm On May 19, 2016
The Federal Ministry of Education on Thursday reiterated its resolve to recruit 500,000 new teachers to enhance academic activities in the 104 Unity Colleges across the country.

The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwuka, announced this while speaking with newsmen on the sideline of the inauguration of a female hostel at the Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba. Anwuka said that teachers recruited by the various PTA’s of the colleges would be given opportunity for employment during recruitment.

The Federal Government recently announced plan to recruit 500,000 teachers in order to bridge the gap of pupil- teacher ratio.

The government also emphasised her desire to improve the quality of education in the country at all levels as well reposition the entire sector.

According to Anwuka, the teachers recruited by the PTAs are a demonstration of goodwill by the parents as critical stakeholders in the sector.

He, however, pointed out that only qualified teachers would be given consideration to teach in the nation’s schools.

``The PTA teachers in the colleges will be given the opportunity for employment but they must avail themselves the requisite training.

``We will only employ qualified teachers and this is because we want only the best for our schools.

``If we end up employing the entire 500,000 that we intend to employ, it will be tied to getting the best with the requisite teacher training knowledge.

``Gone are the days when anyone would be saying I want employment, I want to teach, even without the necessary training.

``This had done a lot of damage to the system and we want to correct it now,’’ the minister said.

He lauded the management of Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, for the achievements and urged it to ensure that the projects were jealously guarded.

Anwuka also promised to replace some of the non-functional and moribund machines and equipments in some of the workshop in the college. Earlier in his address, the Principal of the college, Rev. Chris Ugorji, identified inadequate laboratories as one of the challenges facing the college.

He stressed that the existing science laboratory was small and grossly inadequate, compared to the number of students offering science subjects in external examinations.

The principal said that the 12 workshops, which houses 19 trade subjects, have giant machines that required efficient power generating sets.

He added that the institution’s limited financial resources had affected the school in the use of many of the imported facilities in the college.

Also speaking, the college’s PTA Chairperson, Mrs Oby Igwillo, said that the construction of the hostel was borne out of the need to cushion the effect of acute accommodation challenges in the college.

She said that the construction of the 1,200 bed-space hostel took the association 15 months to complete. Igwillo described the completion of the project as a major relief to the parents and the college management.

PoliticsEbonyi Workers Begin Strike - The Nation by Nnadigoodluck(op): 11:53am On May 18, 2016
The organised labour in Ebonyi on Wednesday began a nationwide strike organised by the labour to protest the recent hike in pump price of petrol.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in Abakaliki, local, state and federal governments offices were locked while workers gathered in groups discussing the situation.

The gates of the state secretariat and the office of the Head of Service (HoS) at Amagu and Nnorum streets were locked while the staff loitered outside the secretariats gate.

Armed police men were also seen milling around the two complexes housing many government organisations to maintain law and order.

Similarly, the High Court complex was locked and cases slated for hearing were put off as members of the Judicial Service Union (JUSUN) joined in the strike.

Meanwhile, Mr Ikechukwu Nwafor, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ebonyi chapter, in an interview with NAN, said that the strike was in compliance with the directive of the National Secretariat.

According to him, labour will not call off the strike until government meets its demand.

“Well the strike has just started and there is massive compliance by the Nigerian workers and the civil populace.

“Our position is that government must reverse the increment and engage the organised labour and other critical stakeholders in the petroleum sector in dialogue before any hike will be accepted,” Nwafor said.

Workers who spoke to NAN urged government to reverse the hike in electricity tariff and fuel pump price to alleviate the hardship to the people.

PoliticsWhy We Walked Out Of Meeting With Nigerian Govt – NLC by Nnadigoodluck(op): 11:47am On May 18, 2016
https://media.premiumtimesng.com/wp-content/files/2016/05/NLC1-e1455006523155.jpg

A last minute meeting between the federal government and Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, on Tuesday night to attempt to avert a nationwide strike over increased petrol price, collapsed mid-way as representatives of the organised labour staged a walkout on government representatives.
The NLC says the talks broke down because the government refused to even consider its demand for a reversal of the price hike, and an earlier increase in electricity tariffs.
The meeting, called by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, was attended by the president of NLC, Aliyu Wabba, who led representatives of affiliate groups including Trade Union Congress, TUC, and civil society organisations.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the meeting was barely an hour into its agenda when the labour leaders decided to stage a walkout after what they called the “refusal of government to accede to their demands”.
The General Secretary of the NLC, Peter Ozo-Eson, who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES on phone shortly after leaving the venue of the meeting, said members could not continue to put up with the government’s unbending attitude towards their demands.
“The talks with government broke down because it was not ready to address the issues the NLC placed on the table for discussion; so we left,” Mr. Ozo-Eson said.
“The demands the NLC and its affiliates made formally in writing on Saturday were that government should first revert to the fuel price of N86.50 per litre before any other decision.
“Again, we demanded that the electricity tariff imposed on the people last January should also be reversed. But, government said they were not ready to discuss such things.
“They said they wanted to discuss minimum wage and palliatives. But, those were not issues we were ready to start any discussion with,” he said.
Mr. Ozo-Eson said labour was not interested in listening to what offers government was going to make in respect of the two issues it offered to talk about, saying their interest was a complete reversal of the fuel price and electricity tariff.
He said the government could not be talking about minimum wage first when most Nigerians are not even working and are being tasked further financially and economically by the hike in fuel price and increased electricity tariff.

PoliticsBREAKING: Court Stops NLC, TUC From Embarking On Strike - Vanguard News by Nnadigoodluck(op): 1:36pm On May 17, 2016
ABUJA – The National Industrial Court, NIC, sitting in Abuja has stopped the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, from embarking on a strike action tomorrow.

The labour unions had in a communique they issued at the end of an emergency meeting the held on Saturday, vowed to embark on a nationwide industrial action should the federal government refuse to reverse the sudden hike in the price of fuel.

However, in a ruling on Tuesday, the NIC President, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, restrained the labour unions from going on strike, pending the determination of a suit the federal government lodged before it.

Justice Adejumo further ordered all the parties to maintain status quo until the legal dispute is settled.

The order followed an ex-parte application that was filed by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Determined to abort the planned strike action, the AGF approached the NIC, begging it to restrain the labour unions from “shutting down the nation”.

Placing reliance on section 14 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, FG, insisted that it would not be “in the national interest” for the NLC and TUC to proceed on nationwide strike over the fuel price increase.

Malami, SAN, argued that ‎no amount of damages could serve as compensation if the labour unions are allowed to shut down the economy.

Contending that the balance of convenience was in favour of the government, the AGF, prayed the court to determine “Whether the respondents (NLC, Trade Union Congress) have complied with the laid down condition precedent for embarking on strike‎”.

As well as, “Whether indeed there exist in law and in fact the basis of which the respondents’ total closure of the economy can be justified”.

He told the court that the respondents met on Saturday and issued a communique wherein it gave government a three-day ultimatum to reverse the decision increasing fuel price.

He said the respondents, aside threatening to shut down the country if government failed to reverse the fuel price increase, equally threatened to close down all government offices, seaport, airports and markets.

The AGF argued that ordinary and law abiding citizens would be subjected to hardship if the respondents were allowed to go ahead with their threat.

He said the government was left with no alternative but to seek the intervention of the court.

Besides, Malami told the court that he got notice of the communique on Sunday and quickly filed an originating summons, a motion on notice and an ex-parte application to determine whether NLC’s decision was justifi‎ed in the circumstance.

He insisted that “great and irreparable damage” would be done against the nation and “ordinary and law abiding citizens”, should the court refuse the ex-parte application.

Meanwhile, though neither NLC nor TUC was represented in court, Justice Adejumo granted the ex-parte motion, even as he ordered the service of all the relevant court processes on the respondents.

The restraining order against the respondents will elapse after seven days.

PoliticsWe Got Four Days To Quit Oshodi Market – Traders by Nnadigoodluck(op): 8:01pm On Jan 07, 2016
Traders affected by the demolition of the Owonifari Market in Oshodi have lamented that the Lagos State government gave them only four days to quit the market, making it impossible for some of them to get their goods out in time.

The market had been demolished by officials of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit in the early hours of Wednesday with the traders arriving later to meet their shops demolished and goods destroyed by bulldozers.

Some of the traders told PUNCH Metro that the notice was too short for several of their colleagues that travelled out of Lagos for the Yuletide to do anything about it.

One of the traders, who gave his name as Ike Uzor, said he just returned from his hometown in the South-East after the Yuletide and was shocked to see that his shop and goods were gone. Uzor claimed that he lost 15 flat screens, among other goods.

He said, “The officials started the process on Saturday at about 9pm. They arrested the market chairman and shot teargas canisters at the traders. That was four days ago. So, why are they claiming they gave us two weeks to pack?

“I just returned from the South-East after the Christmas and New Year celebration. We have goods in these shops worth millions of naira. The officials came in the night and destroyed our goods with bulldozers.

“They said they wanted to use the place for a Bus Rapid Transit park. But we have hundreds of shops in this place, and they did not allow us to move our goods. We did not pick anything from the rubble.”

Another trader, Bayo Akande, said, “My father had two shops. I was born and I grew up in this area. There is no harm if the government wants to use the land because it is a public property. But why should they demolish our goods with the shops? This is wickedness. We did not vote for this change.

“I have also been doing business here for about 15 years. I came this morning to meet the place demolished. Where do I start from?”

PUNCH Metro observed that goods were demolished with the buildings with many of the traders lamenting their fate.

The state government, however, insisted that the traders were given adequate notice about the demolition.

It said the relocation of the traders to the newly built Isopakodowo Market in Bolade-Oshodi was in the overall interest of public good, safety and security; especially as the demolished market was within “the notorious loop of Oshodi”.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Akinwumi Ambode, Mr. Habib Aruna, on Thursday quoted the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, as saying that the government complied with the law and engaged with the leadership of the market severally before demolishing the market.

Ayorinde spoke during a joint press briefing addressed by the State’s Ministries of Information and Strategy, The Environment, Physical Planning and Urban Development, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Office of Civic Engagement.

The government said it constructed an alternative market stall for the traders which can conveniently accommodate over 600 shops and hundreds of kee clamps, and agreed to subsidise payment by giving shops at the new market at a monthly give away price of N5, 000.

Ayorinde said it was important for people to note that the issue of the market had been on for nothing less than ten years, adding that government had been engaging the leadership of the market to make them realise that it could no longer continue in the manner in which the market was being used.

He added that goods were not destroyed in the demolition exercise, adding that such a claim was far from the truth.

Little Akpos and his Father During a Sunday Service!

It is on a Sunday Morning and Akpos has gone to the Church with his Father!

During Prayers the Pastor noticed a new Jeep packed outside and he liked it immediately and decided that he must take it home.

The Pastor said; I am seeing someone bought a new car here, the person should stand up and come out because the lord will bless him more. Akpos father stood up and came forward, the pastor began prayers and in the course of praying, he said that God wants Akpos father to use his car key to sow a seed for more blessings to come his way.

Akpos father agreed immediately and hands the car key to the pastor. Little Akpos who was sitting down was surprised at what his father did, but he did not ask any question.

During the offering, Akpos father took a bike and went home and got his spare car key, when he came back he left with his car.

When they were back home. Disturbed little Akpos asked his father. Dad why did you gave out your new car to the pastor. Akpos father replied, I have no problem. With that, He requested for the car key and i gave it to him, he did not request for the CAR but the CAR KEY. He is my pastor and i should respect him and do whatever he says i should do!

PoliticsWhy We Fought On The Floor Of The House Of Reps Today - Daura - Sahara Reporters by Nnadigoodluck(op): 3:18pm On Jun 25, 2015
Gentlemen of the Press: I am Representative Nasiru Sani Zangon Daura of the All Progressive Congress (APC) representing Zango/Baure Federal Constituency of Katsina State. We are here on behalf of our colleagues of the APC House Caucus to explain to you the unfortunate occurrence during today’s plenary session.

The action that occurred inside the chamber of the House of Representatives was in reaction to the illegal and unconstitutional action taken by Speaker Yakubu Dogara of the House of Representatives, an action in his usual tradition of total disregard to the wishes of the majority members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus, the Party itself and the spirit of the Party.

We are aware of a letter sent by our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) dated 23rd June 2015 conveying the approval of the Party’s Principal Officers vis a vis the APC House Leader, the APC Chief Whip, the APC Deputy House Leader and the APC Deputy Chief Whip for the House of Representatives.

This letter by the Party is in compliance with the expressed wish and mandate of the Majority Members of the All Progressives Congress APC Caucus in the House of Representatives.

This action of the Party and the APC House Caucus is in compliance with the Nigerian Constitution, the House Rules and Parliamentary tradition, practices and precedents in Nigeria and all over the World.

But to our surprise and in breach of our privilege and rights as contained in the Constitution and extant House Rules, Mr. Speaker refused to read the letter from our party.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker are not Party Principal Officers but are House of Representatives Presiding Officers and by precedent and practice are expected to provide a level playing ground for all members, while the Party Principal Officers are supposed to be the main advocates for their individual party positions.

The Speaker and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives are elected by all members of the House of Representatives irrespective of party affiliation and it is also possible under our extant rules for a Speaker and his Deputy to be elected from a minority/opposition party in the National Assembly.

Therefore, Speaker Yakubu Dogara of the House of Representatives cannot under extant Laws and House Rules Appoint, Choose, Select, Dictate or even provide guidance on how Party Principal Officers emerge or are elected or selected. That responsibility and authority lies with each Party and Party’s Caucus members in the House.

If I may ask is Speaker Yakubu Dogara empowered to do that for the PDP House Caucushuh

This action, by Speaker Yakubu Dogara cannot and will not be allowed to stand as it will set a dangerous precedent in our parliamentary practice as it will give the Speaker the right and authority to appoint, Choose, Select, Dictate or even provide guidance on how Principal Officers emerge or are elected or selected by the Majority and Minority Parties in the House of Representatives. This action is capable of truncating our democracy.

As for the claim being made that a particular zone should not be allowed to produce more than one Principal Officer, we say and we say this with all sense of decorum, that this claim is absolutely RUBBISH!!

Precedences were set in the 6th & 7th Assemblies where a single zone, the Northwest, produced two and three Principal Officers, respectively.

We the loyal and disciplined majority APC Caucus in the House of Representatives are fully committed in ensuring that our party’s and President Muhammadu Buhari’s manifesto, agenda and positions prevail despite the efforts and shenanigans of the opposition party(s) and the few disloyal and undisciplined APC party members in the House of Representatives.

We are determined in our efforts, to utilize all legislative strategies available to us, so as to ensure the compliance with due process and democratic norms and values.

We shall persevere, come rain come shine!

We the loyal and disciplined majority APC Caucus in the House of Representatives and the All Progressives Congress have dished out enough of the carrots, it’s time to crack the whip so as to ensure party discipline and maintain order.

Dare I say, we rode to power on the platform of the party, the party is supreme and thus no one is above the party!

God Bless the All Progressives Congress!

God Bless The House of Representatives!!

God Bless Nigeria!!!

Thank You for listening.
