@Nairalanders

This breaking news:

SEC probes six firms over alleged shady deals
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has begun investigations into the activities of six companies over allegations of price manipulation and other sharp practices aimed at ripping-off investors. The Commission, in a statement on Thursday signed by Lanre Oloyi of its corporate affairs department, gave the names as African Petroleum Plc (AP); Big Treat Plc; Afroil Plc First Aluminum Plc; Capital Oil Plc; and IPWA Plc. SEC vowed to deal decisively with any operator found culpable of price manipulation or insider dealing. It reminded all operators that insider dealing was a criminal offence in the capital market and urged them to always operate within the confines of the rules to ensure transparency and integrity of the market.

Some of our favourite stocks here in Nairaland are affected. Trust my BT will weather the storm.

@Wanajo, K2, All

Not disagreeing with Napolean.
Just stressing the need to have inside track with private placements and not jump into just any ole one.

He certainly sounds convincing as a persn who really admires what we are doing here at Nairaland and wishes to help us along by advising that not all is as seems in stocks and shares.

What he says will be very useful to many.
It is certainly entertaining - like that Monsieur Rogue Trader currently out on bail and could be anywhere. Wonder where Monsieur is now.

Wetin bi the share floats 4 Afrooil & Capoil sef wey dem dey command dat kind turnover 4 market consistently since jan 08 - over 100% YTD profit,   . Haba, na yam

Re. manipulation, me thinks just a possibility though some directors/major shareholders go sell u their shares when up, then they go buy them of you again when baba bear comes rampaging and so goes the cycle. Have you ever noticed why some shares would show no volume at all for a long while, and all of the sudden, when the price is right for them, you go see volume tire – see Trans Express; Juli; Vono; lately and the cycle begins again.

Have you ever wondered why the best stocks are the ones with no fundamentals at all, huh? Have you ever wondered why it’s so difficult to convert your spreadsheet money to real profit with these shares esp if you have high volume – it took me 3 days to shift just 1m units of Vono with 70% ROI last wk even though it was on high vol. bid thru out.

It’s difficult CICOing fast fast with high volume because them people go chop, the brokers go chop except if they know say you be mungu and they are so sure that the price would rally further. then they would take it off you.   Note all the peeps saying they made 200/300% with these stocks and sold off - I can bet the volume was marginal, huh??

Hey, just my opinion though with these stocks with small share float & huge daily turnover! I'm off now!

Re. Napoleon’s

It doesn’t really surprise one bit! I have always said the market is increasingly becoming very notoriously manipulative to the detriments of the general public – the in your face & so what inside dealings, the glaringly 419ish collabo amongst all major players the big boys in the PP/IPO processes toward an engineered  price target via pump & dump tactics etc.

To be candid, this market has two sides – them & us. One needs to be able to think like them to corner the market. Like the old cliché goes – if you can beat them, join think like them. If they are ready to move the market, they do so brutally with ease regardless of the pointers from fundamental and Technical Analysis. See what happened lately with First bank when they wanted to push it to reach the N1tr mark. It was done easily despite its overbloated yodiyokunapology to yodiyokun share float. If they want transcorp to reach the IPO price fast fast, no wahala at all, but they wouldn’t do. Why? They’ve already cashed out. It’s the crowd that suffers or better still after a long price stagnation they go dash us peanut profit so that e no go look as if them dey chop alone. You know say person wey chop alone, go die alone, thus their come & chop tactics!

Nobody cares about the public even the SEC’s recent tactics – ‘medicine after death’ policy of delay certificates/returned monies or the ‘much talked since Sep 07’ House of Reps’s proposed ban on banks’ Pos after 95% of the bank don do two or more rounds each

The koko like I always said is the understanding behavioural dynamics of this our inefficient market - the repetitive/predictive patterns, the mood swings, the ‘bad news is always good’ sentiments, the contrarian approach, the potential pairing/ibeji/follow follow/turnaround/new blood/tinwa-tinwa sentiments etc.

Someone on the thread calls it SENTIMENTALITY; Remember vividly FO2/Gradaloot Where Gradaloot sef? Abi na im bi Napoleon re. double personality talking about the market's personality with baba ke saying the market is analogous to a woman with all her pedicitive wahalas & naggings please apology to all the ladies on the thread etc..

Aligning your thoughts with them, thinking like them and figuring out their mostly likely actions including latching up pro-actively to any breakouts/price rallies sometimes with your gut feelings backed up by TAs from NigSecurities if u get shaking would go a long way in cornering the market yourself during this bull period. Know some peeps on this thread are already doing that sometimes subconsciously without knowing they are doing so!

Anyway, nuff said! Wishing you all happy and safe investing! And don’t let them chop your money o! ‘Them’ only dey come out to tell you the ‘how’ after they don chop people’s money tire and waiting for the next big hit. BTW, be your own guy esp the newbies and note that any idea/strategy that’s so common place would not give you that big returns except if na olorunsogo kind of of, if you get my drift.
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by noshaking2(m): 12:00pm On Feb 12, 2008
Hmm! I can see that peeps have gone nuclear with the TAs from Nigerian Securities. Nice one! The bottom line is using these charts to pre-emptively figure out the likely future direction of share prices etc, and not retrospectively, if you get my drift!

Note that in order  to proactively position for a stock before any breakouts Cadbury; Vono; First Bank  lately, always look out for the diverging actions of say RSI & MACD indicators. The koko is the divergence, and not the convergence - price rising whilst the RSI/MACD indicators falling etc

For me, whenever I see 5% max unexpectedly on any stock with significantly high volume but smaller no. of deals than previous, then I know that something is cooking. Using the TAs would then help in confirming breakouts or otherwise.

Hope this helps

@ Father of 2 re. International Energy

Nice try as per the oju agba analysis of IEI, but the problem is that before their premature share reconstruction, IEI was already so overvalued @ N1.93 with Q3 EPS of 0.04.

Anyway, with hindsight, IEI should have waited for the anticipated sentiment-driven bullish run in the insurance sector before their share recontruction. Check out the share prices for Oasis, Guinea and Equity Assurance then and now, the rest is history now! IEI simply ejaculated prematurely and with peeps always looking at share appreciation on the surface regardless of whether there was a price rally or otherwise they would still believe trust 9jamentality that IEI too has had its own fair share of bullish run, not knowing that the leap in price was engineered via share recontruction.

Let's hope many peeps would discount the share-reconstructed price abi?and see the hidden value the way you see it.  if positive, another rally to N12 beckoning, but it's quite risky kalo kalo kind of! because e don pass fundamental + technical analysis o!

Universal Insurance will be listed on the 11th of February (Monday). The PP was done @ 95k

That's a major issue. Read a technical analysis that talk about Oceanic going down. See what is happening now.
Right now, I see UBA and Zenith plus Diamond as stocks to take a look at especially for the LONG term.

When going TAish, the koko is combining at least three types of indicators - EMAs, RSI, MACD with different time frames to confirm divergence either bullish or bearish. In other words, looking for divergence between price movement and the movement of say the popularly used on the thread RSI, MACD and/or Williams%R. For example, if prices are moving up, the RSI & MACD are moving down, then bearish divergence prices likely to move downwards; otherwise, it's bullish divergence !!

Hope this helps!

That still does not explain how underwriters clean mouth, except they receive their own certficates from the registrars before the genral public (and I do not see how this is possible without the general public being aware of this), then there is no cleaning of mouth as far as I am concerned.

My brotha, Well, if you say so! But, just take a few steps backwards and imagine how big boys clean out the market everytime, huh? wanaj0:

Despatch and verification of certificates rest with the registrars and not the issuing houses.

Dunlop, Dangote Sugar, Intercontinental offers were not underwritting by anyone so that immediately disprove your assertion.

Basically for IPO's a 'fiddling' of the price is done by the major shareholders. Imagine if IGI is listed today, how many people have IGI shares to sell. Those that did the PP do not even have the share certificate yet. So who are those 'trading'? existing shareholders. In reality, na dummy trade. They are just recycling from one account to another like husband selling to the wife. That's why you see minimal trades. irrespective of how good your broker is, he will not be able to BUY at that instance until the major shareholders have moved the price high enough. That's why when you look at price movements, also look at volume traded and number of deals. It indicates whether the law of demand and supply is at work or whether some people are just exploiting the weakness in the NSE to their advantage

Who appoints both the Registrar and the Issuing House paddy paddy connection? Then let's talk about the pre-emptive collabo towards an engineered outcome amongst the major paddy paddy players in the PO process - from inception to completion. I tire o! Gotta go now!

BTW, never said the offers for Dunlop, Int' Continental & DangSugar were underwritten. Was making a reference to the delay in their issuance and then verification of their certificates. Besides, the SEC's underwriting law started mid 2007 or circa!
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by noshaking2(m): 1:36pm On Jan 25, 2008
wanaj0:

Zenith did an IPO in 2004 and it was massively over subscribed without the offer being underwritten. Only 800m units was offered then. With all the advert etc, it witnessed serious oversubscription and they returned moeny.

Oceanic and UBA's offer were over subscribed and both were not underwritten.

The reason for oversubcription is somewhere else not with the underwritting firms.

My brotha, those banks you mentioned were sure bets then even they didn't provide us with any projections/financials just mentioning their names na serious oversubsciption from day one. Why underwrite something that is a sure bet, huh? Besides, underwriting wasn't really compulsory then. The koko is those shady companies!!!!! See what happened to the undersubscription fever of the insurance coys last year! Now, with the compulsory 80% underwriting law, it's definitely going to be a different story with this next round of POs from Insurance coys.  cool cool cool
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by noshaking2(m): 1:21pm On Jan 25, 2008
hispy99:

How can the underwriters clean mouth before the ordinary public receive share certificates, or do they get their own certificates before everyone else? The only way your theory will work is if they buy the stock on the secondaty market before/during the PO and not by buying into the PO itself

What do you think, my brotha? Just imagine the diff scenarios/permutations! Your statement implicitly says it all! Have you ever wondered why it takes a long time to get your certificates and also to get it verified afterwards, huh? Yet, you see the prices rally to the roof in front of you and you are so helpless ,   Classic examples - Dunlop; DangSugar; Int'l Continental Bank etc
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by noshaking2(m): 1:00pm On Jan 25, 2008
wanaj0:

Underwriting is actually to prevent undersubcription of offers. Also, it helps in ensuring that offers are fairly priced. If not the underwriting firms will have to cough out the money.

Over subscription is due to many factors. Firstly is the increase awareness which implies that many people are now participating. Next is the issue of preferential allottment which effectively reduces the quantity available to the general public since a substantial portion is already presold. You also have some companies offering very small quantity of shares for sale. I think NAHCO in their PO issued only 90m shares!!! Also with margin facility, people are able to buy beyond their capacity. Lastly you have a number of foreign investors and Nigerians in diaspora bringing huge amount of money into the market.

Haba, on paper, yes! But na Nigeria! Literally, underwriting is like an insurance against undersubscription! But in Nigeria, it’s quite the assurance for oversubscription now. Lately, have you ever seen any undersubscribed  PO/IPO  no matter how woeful the company’s financials are since SEC introduced the 80% underwriting law, huh? . Even if Andy Best Electronic, University of Suya  or Yakoyo Restaurant come to the market today, they would be hugely oversubscribed!  grin grin grin

Trust the Nigeria big boys, they would always find a way round all this! No issuing house wants to take unnecessary risk this day risk/return analysis perspective thus the need for all these aggressive marketing ploy, cowboy tactics, hype game etc we see these days before the offer is made public. And when TS is lifted, the prices go to the roof reason – engineered scarcity and they would subsequently clean out fast fast before the ordinary public receive their share certificate and have the chance to reap from this engineered price appreciation.

BTW, do know the price of Int’l Breweries now on the floor, huh? You know what that means? Check out what happened to Dunlop post TS & post-allotment last year? Anyway, I rest my case!  cool cool cool cool
Investment / Re: Stock Market Tips For Nigerians by noshaking2(m): 11:52am On Jan 25, 2008
Allotment Result for Int'l Breweries out!

1. Offer was 362% oversubscribed, yes oversubscribed!  shocked shocked

2. No portion of oversubcription would be taken up, so confidently said by the company. Another   shocked shocked shocked

3. To add insult upon injury, return monies would attract 7% interest ,  I don tire o!

4. Basis of Alltoment: 1-1000 - 100%; 1001-5000 - 45%; 5001-10000 - 25.05%; 10001-50000 - 16.5%; 50001-100000 - 10% etc. All for this 87k per share,

Infact, no comment at all  angry angry. Reason for all this bullshit: SEC's law of 80% underwriting agreement of all POs by Issuing Houses - meaning Issuing houses would surreptitiously warehouse all these units giving peanuts to the public and subsequently offload the warehoused units on the secondary market when the price is right to make easy profit etc. Anyway, nuff said!

1 UBA still has a low PE compared to all other stocks in the market.
2 The above suggest it is currently a good buy compared to other stocks
2 UBA was bearish during the crazy bull run
3 A quarter's report is expected from UBA and hints suggest it will swing the price northwards
4 Fatherof2 recommended it which serves as a double/triple check grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Ordered 10,000 units of UBA today.

I also want to state here that if UBA performs as expected to hit N62 to N65, Expect a price rally war from Zenith.

Insurance stocks will be enticing much later in the year.

Thanks.

Rightly said re ibeji factor Zenith vs UBA. Check out the results of the 2 said companies above.
