Typical Niraland statistics which only buttresses my point---

99% of Nigerians are murderers and thieves. This is a fact you cant doubt since Nigeria does not keep records

You are a not-so-smart person for making such a suggestion.

Lets see, who has the highest HIV rates in the world ?

Who attacks immigrants that helped support them during Apartheid

Quote taken from Wikipedia

"Crime is a prominent issue in South Africa. South Africa has a high rate of murders, assaults, despoils, and other crimes compared to most countries. Many emigrants from South Africa state that crime was a big factor in their decision to leave.[1]" Wikipedia

Statistics

A survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime ranked South Africa second for assault and murder (by all means) per capita and first for despoils per capita in a data set of 60 countries.[6] Total crime per capita was 10th out of the 60 countries in the dataset.

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute have also conducted research[7] on the victims of crime which shows the picture of South African crime as more typical of a developing country. These statistics show that South Africa has lower rates of violent crime than many African and South American countries.
The murder rate has increased by an order of magnitude in South Africa during the last 40 years,[8] though it has fallen from 66.9 per 100,000 people in 1994–95 to 37.3 per 100,000 in 2008–09.[9] From 2003–2009, crime decreased significantly according to official police data.[10]

According to government statistics, violent crimes such as murder and (reported) robberies decreased in 2007. Between 1994 and 2009, the murder rate reduced by 50% to 34 murders per 100 000 people.[11] violation and hijacking rates, however, showed no signs of slowdown. Hijackings and cash-in-transit heists, particularly, have been shown to be on the increase. The incidence of violation has led to the country being referred to as the "violation capital of the world".[12]

[edit]Sexual violence
Main article: Sexual violence in South Africa

According to a survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations, South Africa was ranked first for despoils per capita.[13] One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been violated in the past year.[14] More than 25 per cent of South African men questioned in a survey published by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in June 2009 admitted to violation; of those, nearly half said they had violated more than one person.[15][16] Three out of four of those who had admitted violation indicated that they had attacked for the first time during their teens.[15] South Africa has amongst the highest incidences of child and baby violation in the world.[17]

[edit]Car hijackings
South Africa also has a high record of car hijackings when compared with industrialised countries, typically characterised by a lower rate of car ownership.[citation needed] A South African insurance company, Hollard Insurance, stated in 2007 that they would no longer insure Volkswagen Citi Golfs manufactured in the previous two years as they were one of the most frequently hijacked vehicles in South Africa.[18] Certain high-risk areas are marked with road signs indicating a high incidence of car hi-jackings within the locality.[19]

[edit]Farm attacks
Crime against commercial farmers continues to be a major problem in the country (no citation?)

GUYS! how can you believe a story like this about 1 in 4 SA men being  rapists. How many tourists were R::A :E:cheesy  in SA during the world cup? Zero! This is just propaganda by western media. That report was released by a white supremacy group in SA. You are making a big mistake calling Afrikaners your white brothers because you obviously don’t know how much Afrikaners hate black people especially NIGERIANS. Afrikaners also known as boers hate black people in SA and they treat blacks like 'poo" .Ask any other Nigerian who is here they will tell you the same.

Forget the stories they tell you in the UK ,it is all propaganda. I have no reason or to defend black South Africans but i have seen how evil the whites are. The KKK in the USA are child's play when compared to South African whites who use their dogs to attack black people.

I will show me show you south African white racist websites and youtube videos ,maybe you will understand d that the white south African in the UK are lying to you.

They call blacks chimps , Kaffirs ,Baboons and monkeys. What irks me is that these bastards have the audacity to do all these in broad day light in an African country where they were forgiven for apartheid and allowed to stay and thrive. Recently a white radio DJ insulted a black beauty queen and called her a stinking baboon on twitter. I will post all the proof here for you to see. Dont fall for the propaganda ,whites South Africans are the most racist pigs on earth and they do not server to live in Africa because they hat Africans!

Here is a Video made by young Afrikaner /Boers where they fed urine to old black women & Men who are cleaners at their university:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDhUoL3mCic?fs=1[/flash]

The above video is very humiliating and should give you a good idea of the Afrikaner mindset.

Now tell me as a Nigerian , if whites were treating Nigerians like this in their own country what do you think Nigerians will do? Smile like a monkey? Hell no , i trust my naija peeps ,we will give them a hiding and kick them out of the country.

Don't be fooled ,i have been here close to 9 years and i can tell you that white South Africans deserve no pity ,the earlier the racist ones are eliminated the better for SA. They start the trouble but when the blacks retaliate they play the innocent lamb. They might smile with you in the UK but don’t be fooled they hate Nigerians.

I shudder at the above analysis.

The ones I work with always put on a smiley face as per fake , but generally we get on, most likely because if there start their hatred here, they will most likely be sacked.

So what is it for Nigerians living in ZA ?

While l hold no grudge against the "poster" for wanting a #2million/month job in Nigeria (i think its his right and choice), a few things struck me, from the contribution of others!

While every attempt has been made to suggest to the poster that by virtue of his education, wealth of experience and exposure, HE SHOULD COME HOME AND BE AN EMPLOYER OF LABOR rather than be looking for another person/firm that has taken the risk and struck it big in Nigeria, the poster is obviously so focused on being an "employee", an expensive one at that! shocked shocked

This brings me down to the mentality of the average Nigerian: WE HATE RISK BUT WE LOVE MONEY, BIG AND CHEAP!
Not many people earn 8Grand/month in the U.K, despite the relatively higher cost of living in the U.K (about half of that will definitely go on taxes, mortgage and utilities) not to mention earning it in a "cheaper" Nigeria. They are the exception, not the norm.

A few years ago, everyone was castigating the Chineese,Japan and "Taiwan" was an acronym for "substandard an fake" goods.

Today, they are the 2nd and 3rd biggest economies in the world!
THE QUESTION WE SHOULD BE ASKING OURSELVES IS: HOW DID THEY DO THAT?

And dont let us once again hide under the excuse of blaming government! "WE" are the government because those "micro decisions" each individual Nigerian makes (home and abroad) is what dictates the future of this country and that is governance!

The answer to the "big question" is very small indeed: MANUFACTURE!, MANUFACTURE!!, MANUFACTURE!!!

China manufactures about every and anything!

They did not get it right the first day but persistently stuck to that ideology: BE AN EMPLOYER, CREATE EMPLOYMENT!!

This is where Nigeria's development will continue to be stunted until we have a change of mentality, especially those of us that have "seen how its done" outside. We are a nation of "spend-spend, buy-buy, consume and consume"!
In a country where "manufacturing and industrial estate warehouses" suddenly begin to get converted to Churches, at an alarming rate, then you know that economic collapse is just a question of "how quickly"

I wish the poster and other capable people like him would have a re-think: You "choice" is crucial to the survival of this country!
It takes one man to start a revolution but it takes a whole generation to fulfill it.

We must revive our sense of Nationalism and downplay our "personal interest".
Well, maybe thats why we are Nigerians grin
Just thinking about how we got here.

Thanks , but this is the not the lastpage. grin

Anyways, I was not hell bent on the 2m a month, I was simply asking for advice based on actualities on the ground for those who work in Nigeria to be specific.

Now, I have been to many forums for White expats and they would normally say that if you are paid less then $100,000 do not even bother going to Nigeria.

As for me I do not earn that much, the truth is I earn about £60,000 a year, but I still get employers life insurance, a healthy pension scheme and other benefits.

This calculates to N15,000,000 a year and N1,250,000 monthly. I guess this is a liveable wage.

Again I do not live in Nigeria but come back home periodically and was there last year, it is very expensive and you will be surprised in terms of housing and motoring almost similar in cost to the UK.

Finally who says I will not start a business ? of course I will but let me first come in and get used to the system before taking the plunge.

Thank you Sir.

do you have the necessary qualifications. first, your profession matters and secondly what is your highest degree as at now.

First of all I have a Postgraduate degree in computing and a first degree with honours.

However all this degree stuff means absolutely nothing, what matters is experience and professional qualifications.

So many Nigerians have degrees, PHDs etc and yet the country is in a dilapidated state.

In the UK how many people have degrees ? And yet they are one million times more advanced technologically than the so called most educated country in Africa.

With all your degrees, tell me one tangible achievement your Nigeria has to show for it.

For those slandering the uk and 9ja its all because majority have nothing to go back home and show for their years of studying or staying abroad. moving back to naija doesnt necessarily mean you must have your own house or your own car or have a fat pocket . at all. home is where you find yourself and you make it worthwhile. as the poster said he has achieved alot in the uk and wants to go home which is not a bad idea.

Security: alot of people are complaining security bla bla bla. is it not this same 9ja that majority of us were given birth to, just because some have opportunity to travel aborad and in the process got their papers doesnt mean they have to start complaining about security. you might be living in a high walled, security fenced, barbed wire, electric fence, bulldog . ak47 house in lagos or 9ja and still get robbed or killed or on the road and also same applies to uk and everywhere else in the world. you can be walking back from work and get stabbed to death in peckham or woolwhich even rich footballers with all the security in the houses still get burgled.

Water: well mostly you have your own borehole runing in your compound either you are renting or own your own home, even back in the days thats how it has always been.

light: am sure while majority of us were growing up, am sure the nepa issue has been the same, with up nepa and down nepa . people have always been relying on generator but now there is torchlight and the cd light popular called oju ti nepa. lol.

In regards to salary the poster might be lucky to get that a month if he has got his msc, phd, amongst other qualification he has. BUT lest not forget the labour market in 9ja is very competitive. an example is that i got a job info with Diamond bank. and when i called the recruiting manager he blantantly told me am only suitable for office job and i was shocked i asked him why, he said the position they have is for marketers and i said well i can also do marketing afterall i have done so in the past. suprisingly he told me outrightly that NO i cant do the job simply because am coming from the uk.

another example is an interview i had with BAT just for the management traineee. at the interview the interviewer told me blantantly that why am i willing to settle for a low paid job i think the pays was like 2 or 3.5m per annum minue benefits, i said am not afraid to start from somewhere. anyway i didnt get the job and when i called my friend that works there to find out the reason why for me. the reason they gave was that apart from my experience they dont think i will be able to accept the pay as i might leave if i get a better offer. undecided

same also i have a friend who got a job with fidelity bank a salary of 7.5m per annum, another one with an oil firm and na container the company take help carry him load go 9ja for am,

equally do i have a friend with skye bank apart from bsc for 9ja no foreign education just security work got a job with 3.5m per annum.

so it all depends on the posters bargaining power. 2m is possible depending on your area of expertise.

Thanks so much for this

Thanks to all and sundry for the invaluable advice given.

For all those Mumus who think that we are all abroad washing dishes or cleaning streets, it actually strikes me as backward thinking because there is dignity of labour in the UK.

This is one of the experiences I hope to bring back home. Be proud of whatever you find yourself doing , and do it well with integrity and honour. This is how genuine employees get promoted to higher positions.

Obviously the likes of invisible would rather be employed in yahoo activities rather than earning a proper income. Sad to say the least.

As for me, I refuse to go into details, but I am confident that Nigeria is the place for me in the interim. If perhaps the elections go well, then there is no doubt that I will be relocating on a permanent basis with family.

I have spent my time here in the UK, gained good qualifications but most importantly acquired a vast amount of experience, primarily on soft skills and work ethic that I know will be an invaluable asset to contribute my own quota while at the same time making a little more $$$$$$  grin

On a general note, I see a lot of ignorance on nairaland especially from our kinsmen in diaspora. You can have a very good career in Nigeria with your integrity intact and not having to lick any bosses' backside, it just depends on the company you work for. There are a lot of companies with well laid-out structures designed to prevent nepotism and favoritism especially in appraisal and pay determination processes. Simply put, your direct boss does not determine your appraisal 100%. You have processes to fdeal with integrity issues that will keep the whistle-blower anonymous (for conflict of interest, corruption etc). Your pay is well laid-out and never comes in later than 24th of every month come rain or shine. Personally, over the last 5 years I've averaged about 20% pay increase per year. To summarise, investigate the particular company you are interested in and ask questions of insiders. That a good gauge, not what one anonymous person says on nairaland.

Thanks for your honest comments, especially with regard to '  licking the bosses backside '. I have done exceedingly well here in the UK without pandering to people. I hope this will be replicated in a Nigeria.

But by the way I am not hoping to work for a Nigerian or Arab country, my sights are on companies like Cisco, Juniper, Microsoft, google ( a wonderful Nairalander gave me a link for a google position ) etc.

I should have thought these companies pay at least a wage commensurate to what one is used to abroad.

i agree with you. . .henceforth everyone with dreams of coming back to naija to earn millions should state their profile before telling us their dreams, it's easy to claim competent. The way some people talk you'd think there were no qualified staff in naija the thing dey vex person.
@ileke-idi
o wa lara e. . .see the way you're saying let us know as if you qualify. . .berra come and join people like me at the bottom of the food chain tongue 3million ke?

Just a hint.

No professional coming from the UK or USA and who is not adequately qualified will be looking for that sort of money.

Common there is money in Nigeria, stop hoarding it , grin grin grin grin grin

^^ It is precisely for those reasons why you should be looking at offering consultancy services to companies and not seeking a 'senior engineer' position.

Working in Nigeria involves compromises one way or the other - the work practices here are not the same as in the UK or US and you will have to adapt. Coming with a messianic mindset will not get you very far.

Go easy on me Bro, who said I was coming with a messianic mindset ?

How do you mean?  undecided

If you are building and designing IT or network infrastructure, then there is a high demand for these skills in Nigeria as the current infrastructure is still rudimentary.

For example apart from mobile telecommunications, technologies like MPLS, Cloud computing , Utility computing are novel to the Nigerian market and have great potential to lubricate and expand business at far cheaper rates than is currently the case.

From the top of my head, I know pple who have comparable experience with you in the states that lost their jobs during the recession or still have their current jobs and will in a heartbeat take a job for less than 2M in naija. Experience matters over degrees sure, but one thing that is not on your side - COMPETITION. The market place has qualified people right now and IT skills are easily transferable. I see lots of Snr Manager level folks sending me resumes for associate type positions.
Suck it up work for ~2M a month make your connections and start your own, that is the optimal way out, and everything most not be in place to start your own business, savvy business folks see oppurtunities NO MATTER the situation.

Just a side thot, if you worked for an IT outsourcing outfit then the odds are higher.

Snr Managers looking for associate positions, you are joking right ?

I've no idea why folks think that because they worked in IT abroad, they need to do the same thing when they relocate to Naija. Why not just use the money you've made and move into something else entirely, as in starting a business?

I mean, you could secure an international franchise in a promising sector and bring it into the country where brand name is so appealing.

Alternatively you could go it alone and set up a bowling alley, a transport firm, hotel, a couple of gyms, a nightclub, a restaurant, or even an arcade and make an awful lot of money. There's a growing demand for top notch services of this sort in Nigeria, and coming from overseas, one can easily infuse something different into the system and make a serious killing.

The country is saturated with IT folks roaming about. Think outside the box!

My twopence!  undecided

Sure but it depends on what you do in IT wink

Again, I am going to play devil’s advocate here. It bothers me to see that someone with your experience and education is looking for how to pull 2M a month in naija when infact you should be thinking about creating jobs and employing people. With your experience have to thought of starting an IT consulting firm??
The problem as most posters have already stated is that the market is saturated every manliness and harry has a foreign MS degree from any university, most of them are roaming the streets now trying to find jobs. Companies are all about cutting costs, I can guarantee that there are people that have the same skill set as you and companies are willing to pay less than you are demanding. Gone at the days (mid 2000’s) when corporate Nigeria worshipped people with foreign degrees.
I work in finance (m&a) and know of friends that came to the states for mba/ms went back home are jobless, and these folks have mba’s from top15 b-schools.

Now will be the time to work your phone and reconnect with any contacts you have in Naija. Ideally you can work for someone, make your connections and branch out in abt 2-3yrs. Eventually 2M will become pocket change smiley

Just my two cents.

Top management in many countries do not earn 300K and so on. I know directors in top banks here who are still bringing in about $120,000 salary and people answer to them left and right too. I am more concerned about the pay, not of how many people hang around them or bow to them really.

Thank you my dear.

I heard a story from a relative which goes like this :

When the Nigerian boss of a department is travelling to the US or UK for example, most of the staff in that department will normally escort him to the airport in an almost homage like fashion.

Failure to do so could be seen as not showing enough respect or worse still, as a sign of insubordination.

Madness I say.

We must rid ourselves of all this inferiority superiority complex.

It is quite common among the Nigerian elite.
