Litmus: You are a not-so-smart person for making such a suggestion. Lets see, who has the highest HIV rates in the world ? Who attacks immigrants that helped support them during Apartheid Quote taken from Wikipedia "Crime is a prominent issue in South Africa. South Africa has a high rate of murders, assaults, despoils, and other crimes compared to most countries. Many emigrants from South Africa state that crime was a big factor in their decision to leave.[1]" Wikipedia Statistics A survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime ranked South Africa second for assault and murder (by all means) per capita and first for despoils per capita in a data set of 60 countries.[6] Total crime per capita was 10th out of the 60 countries in the dataset. The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute have also conducted research[7] on the victims of crime which shows the picture of South African crime as more typical of a developing country. These statistics show that South Africa has lower rates of violent crime than many African and South American countries. The murder rate has increased by an order of magnitude in South Africa during the last 40 years,[8] though it has fallen from 66.9 per 100,000 people in 1994–95 to 37.3 per 100,000 in 2008–09.[9] From 2003–2009, crime decreased significantly according to official police data.[10] According to government statistics, violent crimes such as murder and (reported) robberies decreased in 2007. Between 1994 and 2009, the murder rate reduced by 50% to 34 murders per 100 000 people.[11] violation and hijacking rates, however, showed no signs of slowdown. Hijackings and cash-in-transit heists, particularly, have been shown to be on the increase. The incidence of violation has led to the country being referred to as the "violation capital of the world".[12] [edit]Sexual violence Main article: Sexual violence in South Africa According to a survey for the period 1998–2000 compiled by the United Nations, South Africa was ranked first for despoils per capita.[13] One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been violated in the past year.[14] More than 25 per cent of South African men questioned in a survey published by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in June 2009 admitted to violation; of those, nearly half said they had violated more than one person.[15][16] Three out of four of those who had admitted violation indicated that they had attacked for the first time during their teens.[15] South Africa has amongst the highest incidences of child and baby violation in the world.[17] [edit]Car hijackings South Africa also has a high record of car hijackings when compared with industrialised countries, typically characterised by a lower rate of car ownership.[citation needed] A South African insurance company, Hollard Insurance, stated in 2007 that they would no longer insure Volkswagen Citi Golfs manufactured in the previous two years as they were one of the most frequently hijacked vehicles in South Africa.[18] Certain high-risk areas are marked with road signs indicating a high incidence of car hi-jackings within the locality.[19] [edit]Farm attacks Crime against commercial farmers continues to be a major problem in the country (no citation?) unipol: Agreed , I now have a more accurate and recent list from Forbes and published by Shell news. SATURDAY, MARCH 7, 2009 Forbes List of World's Most Violent Countries Here is a list from Forbes of the "most violent" countries today, from most (Somalia) on down: 1. Somalia 2. Afghanistan 3. Iraq 4. Congo, Democratic Republic of 5. Pakistan 6. Gaza 7. Sri Lanka 8. Yemen 9. Sudan (Darfur) 10. Zimbabwe 11. Ivory Coast, Cote d'Ivoire 12. Haiti 13. Algeria 14. Nigeria http://www.shellsnews.com/2009/03/forbes-list-of-worlds-most-violent.html South Africa not on the list. Strange, cos I have lots of South African colleagues ( whites ) that I work with and they say South Africa is terribly violent and most unsafe |

lastpage: Thanks , but this is the not the lastpage. Anyways, I was not hell bent on the 2m a month, I was simply asking for advice based on actualities on the ground for those who work in Nigeria to be specific. Now, I have been to many forums for White expats and they would normally say that if you are paid less then $100,000 do not even bother going to Nigeria. As for me I do not earn that much, the truth is I earn about £60,000 a year, but I still get employers life insurance, a healthy pension scheme and other benefits. This calculates to N15,000,000 a year and N1,250,000 monthly. I guess this is a liveable wage. Again I do not live in Nigeria but come back home periodically and was there last year, it is very expensive and you will be surprised in terms of housing and motoring almost similar in cost to the UK. Finally who says I will not start a business ? of course I will but let me first come in and get used to the system before taking the plunge. Thank you Sir. |

emma bowin: First of all I have a Postgraduate degree in computing and a first degree with honours. However all this degree stuff means absolutely nothing, what matters is experience and professional qualifications. So many Nigerians have degrees, PHDs etc and yet the country is in a dilapidated state. In the UK how many people have degrees ? And yet they are one million times more advanced technologically than the so called most educated country in Africa. With all your degrees, tell me one tangible achievement your Nigeria has to show for it. |

Thanks to all and sundry for the invaluable advice given. For all those Mumus who think that we are all abroad washing dishes or cleaning streets, it actually strikes me as backward thinking because there is dignity of labour in the UK. This is one of the experiences I hope to bring back home. Be proud of whatever you find yourself doing , and do it well with integrity and honour. This is how genuine employees get promoted to higher positions. Obviously the likes of invisible would rather be employed in yahoo activities rather than earning a proper income. Sad to say the least. As for me, I refuse to go into details, but I am confident that Nigeria is the place for me in the interim. If perhaps the elections go well, then there is no doubt that I will be relocating on a permanent basis with family. I have spent my time here in the UK, gained good qualifications but most importantly acquired a vast amount of experience, primarily on soft skills and work ethic that I know will be an invaluable asset to contribute my own quota while at the same time making a little more $$$$$$ By the way I mean it when I say the greedy are never satisfied , lol. |

On a general note, I see a lot of ignorance on nairaland especially from our kinsmen in diaspora. You can have a very good career in Nigeria with your integrity intact and not having to lick any bosses' backside, it just depends on the company you work for. There are a lot of companies with well laid-out structures designed to prevent nepotism and favoritism especially in appraisal and pay determination processes. Simply put, your direct boss does not determine your appraisal 100%. You have processes to fdeal with integrity issues that will keep the whistle-blower anonymous (for conflict of interest, corruption etc). Your pay is well laid-out and never comes in later than 24th of every month come rain or shine. Personally, over the last 5 years I've averaged about 20% pay increase per year. To summarise, investigate the particular company you are interested in and ask questions of insiders. That a good gauge, not what one anonymous person says on nairaland. Thanks for your honest comments, especially with regard to ' licking the bosses backside '. I have done exceedingly well here in the UK without pandering to people. I hope this will be replicated in a Nigeria. But by the way I am not hoping to work for a Nigerian or Arab country, my sights are on companies like Cisco, Juniper, Microsoft, google ( a wonderful Nairalander gave me a link for a google position ) etc. I should have thought these companies pay at least a wage commensurate to what one is used to abroad. |

ROSSIKE: If you are building and designing IT or network infrastructure, then there is a high demand for these skills in Nigeria as the current infrastructure is still rudimentary. For example apart from mobile telecommunications, technologies like MPLS, Cloud computing , Utility computing are novel to the Nigerian market and have great potential to lubricate and expand business at far cheaper rates than is currently the case. |

Kobojunkie: Thank you my dear. I heard a story from a relative which goes like this : When the Nigerian boss of a department is travelling to the US or UK for example, most of the staff in that department will normally escort him to the airport in an almost homage like fashion. Failure to do so could be seen as not showing enough respect or worse still, as a sign of insubordination. Madness I say. We must rid ourselves of all this It is quite common among the Nigerian elite. |
